Spurs reject loan exit for Ryan Sessegnon, Mourinho ready to unleash him

Having joined from Fulham last summer, it’s fair to say Ryan Sessegnon didn’t exactly enjoy the greatest of debut seasons at Tottenham.

The England youth international played just 12 times for the first-team, with a hamstring injury certainly not helping his cause either.

The Spurs starlet did show glimpses of huge promise though, including scoring at the Allianz Arena in the north London side’s 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stages.

Now, The Athletic claim that Jose Mourinho rejected Barcelona’s enquiry over a potential loan deal for Sessegnon, and that the current plan for the winger is for him to spend the upcoming campaign at Spurs.

The report adds that “the expectation is that Sessegnon will play more this season, with the club putting the 20-year-old on a strength and conditioning programme aimed at helping him bulk up and be better equipped for the rigours of the Premier League.”

Speaking back in late 2019, the Spurs boss made it clear just how highly he rated Sessegnon, saying: “I think Ryan is absolutely fantastic, I have known him since a kid in Fulham. I think in this moment he is a winger on the left, can also play on the right, can learn progressively and even developing physically, which he is doing.”

Having now spent a year just getting used to his new surroundings, those at Spurs may feel that this new campaign may be the perfect time for Sessegnon to really shine.

Everton fans react as Greg O’Keeffe relays Moise Kean news

Everton fans have been embroiled in debate this week after The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe relayed key news on striker Moise Kean.

The 20-year-old has endured a controversial and tumultuous spell at Goodison Park since joining under Marco Silva in the summer.

In November, he was dropped from the matchday squad for disciplinary breaches after being late for a team meeting for a second time, and then a month later he became the substitute that got substituted.

Kean then broke the government’s lockdown restrictions by attending a party in April, which saw him once again disciplined by the club.

However, O’Keeffe has penned an article stating the Italian’s reasons for why, claiming that he didn’t understand the regulations and how the young forward wanted to phone Carlo Ancelotti straight away.

It has sparked a reaction from sections of the Toffees faithful on Twitter, here’s what has been said so far…

Tottenham Hotspur target Carles Alena was brilliant vs Inter Milan

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Against all the odds, Barcelona managed to tally another impressive 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League earlier this week.

Interestingly enough, the odds were against them because they had already qualified for the knockout stages and Ernesto Valverde decided to reshuffle the deck and deploy a fairly young side to face the Nerazzurri.

But even that seemed to be enough as some fringe players stepped up and took their chance with both hands.

One such player was definitely the 21-year-old Carles Alena, a slightly forgotten La Masia graduate that still has only 153 minutes under the belt in the current campaign – and that’s with the 90 vs Inter included.

With his situation at the club looking gloomy, he was linked with plenty of clubs and Tottenham Hotspur seem to remain one of the possible destinations for him in January already, as per a report from AS earlier this month.

Jose Mourinho could very well have taken notice of Alena following a rather masterful display from the young midfielder.

The 21-year-old was at the hub of everything for the Catalans, tallying an incredible, game-high 111 touches.

But that was not nearly all that he did.

Alena also registered four key passes with 94 passes in total, and both figures were also the highest in their respective categories.

He also completed three dribbles which were, once again, the most by any player throughout the whole 90 minutes. Only Lautaro Martinez from Inter could match it with three of his own but no one had more than that.

The Spaniard was also involved in the team’s defending with one tackle and one registered interception as well, which completed his masterclass performance on the night.

Needless to say, despite his current situation at Barcelona, the future seems bright for this La Masia talent and maybe Spurs are the place for him to grow into the star he was supposed to become.

Mourinho has vowed to use young talents during his tenure in London, and Alena looks like someone the Special One could mould into an incredible player in his own right.

Liverpool should pursue Ryan Fraser, rather than Jadon Sancho

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It sounds like a bit of a statement to make, but Ryan Fraser could be a better option than Jadon Sancho in January.

The Dortmund star’s future has become rather unclear in recent weeks. Being dragged off after 36 minutes against Bayern Munich didn’t please the teenager and now there are reports suggesting he could leave the club.

Liverpool are one of the sides interested in his services but they’ll face stiff competition from the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and PSG.

Rated at £90m according to Transfermarkt, a deal to acquire the 19-year-old is unlikely to come cheap. Couple that with the fact he’s English and it only adds an extra premium to his talents.

Signing Sancho would be a statement of intent from Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool have snapped up major deals in the form of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, but as far as attacking signings go they’ve been quite coy.

Mo Salah cost what now looks to be a bargain price of £34m after winning the Golden Boot in successive seasons but this deal could blow it entirely out of the water. However, is there any need to even try and sign Sancho in January?

Arguably not – especially when Fraser is also a reported target. Valued at £27m, he’d come much cheaper than Sancho. His contract ends at the end of the season and it’s still unclear as to whether he’ll sign a new deal at Bournemouth.

With Liverpool lurking, it’s difficult to envisage how he wouldn’t be enticed by the prospect of potentially winning a Premier League title.

Sancho has undoubted potential but usurping Salah and Sadio Mane on the flanks at Anfield would be a considerable challenge.

The pair of them shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last term and have been stars out wide in recent years.

With that in mind, securing someone proven to play as back-up would be a wise idea. Spending a vast sum of money on Sancho feels pointless when he isn’t even guaranteed to start.

Liverpool have been shrewd by swooping up players like Xherdan Shaqiri and Gini Wijnaldum from less prosperous clubs and they could replicate that here.

Shaqiri isn’t getting any younger while Adam Lallana has also been linked with a move to PSG of all places.

Gathering greater squad depth and improving on the fringe players they already have would be beneficial.

Sancho may have racked up 14 Bundesliga assists in 2018/19, but Fraser can match him with the exact same record.

It isn’t entirely beyond the realms of possibility that Klopp could favour the Scot instead.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans have been commenting on some intriguing comments from Eden Hazard…

Southampton fans don’t want Hasenhuttl sacked after 9-0 loss

Southampton fans on Twitter have been vocal in their view that they don’t want to see Ralph Hasenhuttl sacked after they were beaten 9-0 at home by Leicester City.

It’s rather incredible to see some members of the fanbase come out in support of the manager after watching their team suffer the joint-biggest defeat in Premier League history, but nonetheless that’s where we are.

Some supporters seemingly still have the utmost faith in the Austrian to steer them in the right direction.

It’s hard to agree with the Saints fans on this one though. The south-coast club moved to 18th in the Premier League after 10 games, and Friday’s performance was undoubtedly one of the worst in English top flight history.

Whether or not the former RB Leipzig manager remains at the helm at St Mary’s remains to be seen, but the fanbase certainly don’t want to see any brash decisions made.

Here’s what Southamption fans have been saying on Twitter…

Leeds journalist Phil Hay gives his view on Erling Haaland

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Erling Haaland is one of the most coveted strikers in the world at the moment, and for good reason.

The Norwegian striker hasn’t been out of the headlines since netting nine goals in an U20 World Cup game, and he hasn’t stopped scoring yet.

Indeed, the 19-year-old has scored 22 goals in 15 games so far this term, and that has sparked talk of a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

However, it’s also caused a stir amongst the Leeds fanbase due to the fact that Haaland has an affinity with the Whites.

Of course, he is the son of former United midfielder Alf-Inge Haaland, therefore, he was born in Leeds and he has previously stated his ambition to win the league with the club.

Phil Hay provided some news on Leeds’ previous interest in the striker and where they stand on the matter going forward.

What’s been said then?

The journalist was asked in his Q&A session with The Athletic if he thought Leeds could ever bring the striker in at Elland Road.

“The way he’s going with his goalscoring, someone is going to pay very big money for him. The Leeds link is very obvious but money talks.”

One fan picked up on the fact Haaland is already playing Champions League football and that he wouldn’t want to take a step down at this stage of his career. Hay responded:

“That’s probably true. And even staying where he is for a while, that move has done great things for him. Leeds did try to get him before he took the Red Bull offer. They couldn’t match it.”

Why being the away goalkeeper at Leeds is the toughest job in football in the video below…

Missed opportunity

Hay’s update will sting.

To know that the Whites had spotted Haaland’s talents before he burst onto the scene must be heart-breaking, especially as he was practically in their grasp. A little extra on the wage bill and he may have proven to be one of their most inspired signings, particularly given his record this term.

The journalist says that Leeds couldn’t match Salzburg’s offer, but with him joining the Austrian outfit for a reported fee of €9m (£7.7m) it’s hard to say that Leeds couldn’t have afforded that deal, just that they thought it was too much of a risk.

If they’d have had more faith in Haaland’s abilities they would have been in a much stronger position right now as they’d have one of the best goalscorers in Europe at their disposal.

As it happens, they’re now struggling on the goals front with Patrick Bamford failing to find the net in nine matches.

Tottenham’s predicted XI to play Liverpool

Tottenham may have got back to winning ways on Tuesday but they face a much sterner test when they take on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

As a result, whilst Mauricio Pochettino would perhaps like to field the same starting XI as he did in the Champions League, he will probably proceed with a little more caution, and that could mean a change in formation.

There could be personnel differences, too, with the Argentine likely to recall Danny Rose and Harry Winks to the side, both of whom have been regulars this term, with nine and 11 appearances respectively.

He has other defensive decisions to make, with who gets the nod at centre-back particularly pertinent. Having played well against Red Star Belgrade and achieved a Football London rating of seven, it could be Davinson Sanchez who faces the task of dealing with Roberto Firmino.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

There is a lot riding on the fixture for both teams, with the hosts likely keen to get back to winning ways after losing their 100% record against Manchester United last time out.

For Spurs, a result here could kickstart their season and help them move on from their poor run, and the front three could be crucial to that happening.

Both Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min Son ran riot on Tuesday. With Harry Kane operating effectively as a creative passer, the two wingers were clinical in attack with a combined total of three goals and two assists, so should be confident going into Sunday.

However, one man who didn’t perform to the same level against the Serbian champions was Dele Alli, with no goal contributions, and that means he could miss out against the Reds.

He performed well against Watford but facing a side who have averaged 57% possession this campaign means he may not be the best option for Pochettino.

Instead, he will prefer a midfield three who can retain possession and provide better protection for the defence, with Sissoko and Ndombele producing four tackles and five interceptions between them on Tuesday.

Winks has also achieved a pass accuracy of 92% in the league, with Sissoko’s 91% also bettering that of Alli’s 85%.

The Argentine is also likely to recall Rose as Davies looks to build his fitness – with only four starts this season – and having played on Tuesday he might be considered not fit enough to deal with Mo Salah.

On average, Rose has been dribbled past just 0.8 times per game, and his pace and awareness should serve him well in the battle against the Egyptian, which will probably sway Pochettino’s decision.
