Wolves: Lage plotting bid for Maxi Gomez

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Valencia’s Uruguayan forward Maxi Gomez.

What’s the word?

That’s according to a report from Spain (via Sport Witness), which claims that the West Midlands side have “set their sites” on Gomez.

Wolves were linked with the Uruguayan around the time of Raul Jimenez’s serious head injury, with the Old Gold reportedly still keen on the 25-year-old and are wiling to make a bid for his services this summer.

According to reports, Valencia are looking to raise funds through player sales this summer, and with Gomez one of the greater valued assets in the squad, he is expected to be placed on the market.

A huge risk

In truth, Bruno Lage would be taking a risk with the £13.5m-rated Valencia forward, who has misfired this season for Los Che.

The Uruguayan has just three goals and 24 appearances in LaLiga this campaign.

Although this is his first Fabio Silva.

He’s a physical forward who relies more on his positioning than his pace.

Though his record at previous club Celta Vigo allows you to enter the thought process of Bruno Lage.

The £47k-per-week Uruguayan had two successful goal-scoring seasons for Celta, scoring 13 goals in his second.

This gives Gomez a lifeline and insinuates that his playing style does not suit Valencia boss Pep Bordalas’ counter-attacking system.

Valencia have the fourth-worst possession statistics this season, with Los Che relying solely on transitional play to get them goals.

At Celta Vigo, Gomez mainly functioned as a centre-forward in a 4-3-3 side that looked to contest possession, which allows us to understand the reasoning behind his lack of goals this season.

Bruno Lage has clearly done his research with reports claiming that the Molineux side would be willing to make a proposal to sign the Uruguayan who Phil Vickery dubbed a “throwback” and “fearsomely strong” this summer.

The Portuguese manager must feel as though he can get Maxi Gomez back to his goalscoring ways at Wolves, in a move that would be a huge risk with the potential to pay dividends for the Old Gold.

Barresi carries Netherlands to major victory

Netherlands secured their first one-day international victory against a Full Member nation as Wesley Barresi hit a match-winning 65 off 43 balls against Bangladesh in Glasgow

Cricinfo staff20-Jul-2010Netherlands 200 for 4 (Szwarczynski 67, Barresi 65*) beat Bangladesh 199 for 7 (Kayes 53, Borren 3-29) by six wickets
ScorecardNetherlands secured their first one-day international victory against a Full Member nation as Wesley Barresi hit a match-winning 65 off 43 balls against Bangladesh in Glasgow after the game was reduced to 30 overs per side. Barresi, playing just his seventh ODI, added 96 with Bas Zuiderent and the pair batted superbly to steady a run chase that had threatened to fall apart after Eric Szwarczynski’s 67.The victory also means Netherlands will join Ireland and Kenya on the main ICC rankings table having gained the required victory against a Full Member while holding an overall win ratio of 60%. It was a disappointing end to the tour for Bangladesh, who had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Ireland and had their match against Scotland washed out, having hoped to dominate their Associate opposition.Szwarczynski batted confidently, with his runs coming from 54 deliveries, and he dominated an opening stand of 61 with Alex Kervezee but, when he was lbw to Shakib Al Hasan, Netherlands were 104 for 4 and still needed 96 from 15 overs. However, Barresi and Zuiderent paced the chase so impressively that there were seven balls to spare when Barresi guided the winning boundary to third man off Shafiul Islam.Barresi stuck 11 boundaries while Zuiderent played the anchor role during the match-winning stand and his lone boundary was a six to open his account off Shakib. Bangladesh, though, didn’t help their own cause with some poor fielding, including an horrendous drop by Mahmudullah to give Szwarczynski a life when he had 29.Imrul Kayes had earlier top-scored for Bangladesh with a solid 53, but Peter Borren’s three wickets proved crucial in keeping the Test nation to a chaseable total. They were also boosted by the early departure of Tamim Iqbal who was caught behind off Mudassar Bukhari for 2 in the second over. However, Junaid Siddique managed a fair impression of his colleague as he raced to 31 off 19 balls to kick-start the innings before he, too, fell to Bukhari from a top-edged pull. But Siddique’s rapid innings had given Bangladesh time to regroup as Kayes and Jahurul formed a solid partnership. Runs continued to come at a decent pace until Jahurul fell in the 18th over, lofting to long-on, to begin a mini-collapse as three wickets fell for seven, including Kayes for 53.Shakib struggled to find any momentum as he took 20 balls over 15, but Mahmudullah and captain Mashrafe Mortaza ensured the innings didn’t fade away. They added 33 in five overs for the seventh wicket. Once again, though, it was Bangladesh’s bowling and fielding which cost them the match.

Spurs linked with shock Dembele move

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a shock move for Ousmane Dembele ahead of deadline day…

What’s the word?

According to Daily Mail journalist Sami Mokbel, the north London outfit have been “offered” the chance to sign the out-of-contract Barcelona star this January transfer window with a little over 24 hours to go.

It’s believed that the French winger is indeed a player ‘on their radar’ as sporting director Fabio Paratici looks to lock up further deals to bolster Antonio Conte’s playing squad.

The 24-year-old dynamo is free to leave the Nou Camp this month after failing to agree on a contract extension and the Catalan giants are looking for a transfer fee in the region of £16m, some four-and-a-half years after costing a whopping £135.5m.

Shock swoop

This would be an intriguing signing for Spurs and ultimately one they should not turn their nose up at, if given the opportunity, especially with Bryan Gil likely to depart on loan and Steven Bergwijn’s future up in the air, too.

Dembele has been hampered by persistent injury troubles during his time in Spain but whenever he has featured on the pitch, he has delivered. The former Dortmund sensation has directly contributed towards 54 goals from 129 appearances; a goal or assist every 139 minutes.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

By comparison, Heung-min Son’s record for Spurs sits at one direct contribution every 110 minutes. Not too different.

Remarkably, the £27m-rated wide man has earned plenty of praise during his time at Barcelona, despite not playing too many minutes. His ex-teammate Lionel Messi dubbed him a “phenomenon”, whilst club president Joan Laporta once claimed “he is better than Mbappe.”

If both Gil and Bergwijn do leave before Monday night, then Conte will certainly need reinforcements in the role as he’ll be left with very little in the attack and Dembele could be the ideal solution, particularly as he’s readily available for a transfer.

Just imagine the sort of player he could become under the Italian’s stewardship. It’s surely a mouthwatering prospect.

Glen Johnson makes Jesse Lingard claim

According to former West Ham defender Glen Johnson (as shared by football.london), if Jesse Lingard wanted to join the Hammers in the January transfer window, it would already have happened.

The Lowdown: Lingard’s transfer saga with the Hammers

Ever since Lingard’s loan move at West Ham came to an end last summer, the Manchester United midfielder has regularly been linked with a permanent transfer to David Moyes’ side.

From a Hammers perspective, it is easy to see why. During his six-month stint with the club, the 29-year-old played 16 times for the Irons and stunned the footballing world by producing nine goals and five assists in an unbelievable run.

However, life has not been as simple for the midfielder since returning to Old Trafford. Lingard has played just 88 minutes of Premier League football this season, having failed to make the Red Devils’ starting XI once.

With his contract expiring in the summer, the former England international is currently set to leave Man United on a free transfer at the end of the season, with West Ham reportedly interested in securing the player’s signature.

The Latest: Johnson makes Lingard claim

According to former Hammers full-back Glen Johnson (as relayed by football.london), though, Lingard would already be a West Ham player this month if he were truly interested in leaving Man United for good.

The 37-year-old said: “I think if Jesse Lingard really wanted the move himself then it would have happened already. If he genuinely wanted it, then it would have been done.

“He’s not playing at Manchester United. Everyone loved him at West Ham. So if the player wanted to do it, it doesn’t sound like a very difficult deal to do. You can only imagine that he’s trying to stay at Manchester United for whatever reason. I would guess that it’s Jesse that didn’t want to do it and go to anybody else.

“If you were Manchester United you would sell him. And if you were West Ham you would sign him. I think he would be in the West Ham starting XI. I don’t think it would be guaranteed. If he gets there and plays like he did previously he’d nail down a place but I do think they’ve got some good players in that position. I don’t think he would be a guaranteed starter but if he hits the form that he was in before then yes he will be.”

The Verdict: Lingard must not be keen on West Ham return

As suggested by Johnson, it seems that Lingard is not keen on a return to West Ham. Moyes’ previous attempts to lure him back to east London proved unsuccessful, with the English midfielder preferring to stay and fight for his place in the team at Old Trafford.

This is a shame for the 29-year-old’s career, as without regular game-time he will surely not be able to secure a place in the England team ahead of the World Cup later this year. Lingard has made 32 appearances for his country and still has plenty of years left to add to this tally.

With Tottenham also interested in the player, it could become even harder for Moyes to secure Lingard’s signature this month.

Baugh in West Indies squad

Jamaican wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh jnr has been included in West Indies’ provisional 30-member squad for the World Twenty20 to be staged in the Caribbean late next month. The wicketkeeper’s slot is something of a worry for new coach Ottis Gibson, following Denesh Ramdin’s disappointing performances in the recent matches against Australia and Zimbabwe. Besides Baugh and Ramdin, the other in the running for the position are Andre Fletcher, Chadwick Walton and Devon Thomas.Of the frontline wicketkeepers in the regional competition, Baugh is the best batsman with a solid first-class average of 36.45 and 11 hundreds, though he has played only a handful of Twenty20 matches. He hasn’t impressed on the international stage yet, last having played for West Indies in December 2008, a Twenty20 game against New Zealand.Fletcher and Walton have been let down by their batting as well in recent matches for West Indies, and it is believed the selectors may not risk to exposing 20-year-old Thomas to such a high-profile competition at this time. There were no real surprises in the squad except for the axing of left-hander Brendan Nash. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Jerome Taylor, who have been out of action with injuries, are likely to undergo fitness assessments before the selection panel, headed by Clyde Butts, name the final 15.West Indies have been drawn in Group D, along with England and Ireland, and will be playing their league matches at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. They open their campaign against Ireland on April 30.West Indies probables for the 2010 World Twenty20: Lionel Baker, Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh jnr, David Bernard jnr, Sulieman Benn, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Royston Crandon, Travis Dowlin, Narsingh Deonarine, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Nikita Miller, Runako Morton, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith, Dwayne Smith, Jerome Taylor, Devon Thomas, Gavin Tonge, Chadwick Walton

Claire Taylor honoured with MBE

England cricketer Claire Taylor received her MBE at Windsor Castle today. Taylor was part of the England side that won both the Women’s World Cup and the Women’s World Twenty20 last year, cracking an unbeaten half-century to guide England to victory over Australia in the semi-final of the Twenty20 tournament. She was Player of the Tournament at both events and was named Women’s Player of the Year at the ICC Awards in Johannesburg.A veteran of England’s Women’s side, she has played 114 one-day internationals and 15 Tests since making her debut in an ODI against Australia at Southampton in 1998. She has also been a valued member of Berkshire and club Reading Ridgeway for over 14 years, and is currently ranked second in the world in the ICC ODI batting rankings.”It was such a huge honour today,” Taylor said after receiving her MBE. To be presented with this by the Queen at Windsor Castle, it’s brilliant. I’m so honoured.””It’s best not to think about these things actually,” she added. “You concentrate on the things you’re good at, that you enjoy. In my case, that’s playing cricket and it’s putting on an England shirt and playing for your country. If you’re lucky – and I have been to do all that – it’s fantastic.”I wouldn’t be here if the team hadn’t played some really great cricket. Hopefully, what they’ve done inspires a few others to take up the path of cricket. It’s a great sport and you can get great rewards from it.”When asked to identify her personal highlights from a long international career, Taylor explained: “Chases as a batsman test me mentally and technically so they mean more to me. We’ve had some great performances over the last twelve months and I’d probably pick chasing 160-odd to beat Australia to get into the World Twenty20 Final.”Clare Connor, ECB’s Head of England Women’s Cricket, paid tribute to Taylor after she received her prestigious award. “Claire Taylor’s contribution to women’s cricket is immense,” she said. “Claire has amassed over 5,000 runs in all formats of international cricket.”In February 2008, she notched up her seventh century to become the joint highest century-maker in women’s ODIs. In 2009 she made history when she was named as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year – the first female to receive the accolade.”In 2009 she was instrumental in England lifting two ICC trophies, the World Cup and the World Twenty20; in both tournaments Claire was named Player of the Tournament for her consistent contributions with the bat,” she added.”Claire’s influence stretches far beyond the England team. She helps raise standards of girls’ cricket in her area through working on a Gifted and Talented Programme and she is heavily involved in Sport Relief this year. In short, she is a tremendous ambassador for our sport and she thoroughly deserves to be recognised with the honour of an MBE.”

UP aim for hat-trick of finals

Match facts

Big picture

After dominating the late nineties, with three Ranji championships in four years, the next decade wasn’t one to savour for Karnataka: they failed to reach the finals for ten straight years. In that time, Uttar Pradesh transformed themselves into perennial title contenders, contesting the finals thrice in the previous four years. This season, though, a revamped Karnataka have had a hiccup-free ride into the semi-finals on the back of a promising bunch of young batsmen and a bowling attack with bite. They opened the campaign with a thumping 185-run victory over UP in Meerut, strolled to big wins in three of the remaining five league games, and are yet to even concede the first-innings lead in the tournament. However, they can’t take a tenacious UP lightly, particularly as they are up against a bowling line-up that includes three players (Praveen Kumar, RP Singh and Piyush Chawla) with international exposure. Also, UP are packed with players well-versed in dealing with the pressures of playing quality teams in knock-out Ranji encounters, which will be a novel experience for many of Karnataka’s new boys.UP have also shown tremendous appetite for a scrap this season, bouncing back to prevail from dire situations like when they were rolled over for 62 by Bengal in Kanpur. It’s their bowling which will be their main strength, but their batsmen have put up timely, if not massive, runs to keep the season on track. “We are fighters, we don’t give up,” their captain Mohammad Kaif said on Saturday. “We don’t have any player scoring 1400 runs in a season, players averaging around 30, maximum 40-45, but we have eleven players contributing all the time.”

Players to watch

A blistering century in the IPL sprung Manish Pandey from anonymity into national limelight. Making runs in the hit-and-giggle world of Twenty20s is all very well, but can he cut it in the first-class arena, the critics asked? This season, he has shown he can. First, there was the aggressive 194 against UP to rescue Karnataka from 27 for 3, then a century against Irfan Pathan and Co. but the most important innings was the assured 115 in the quarter-finals, when he shepherded the Karnataka tail past Punjab’s first-innings score.RP Singh has followed the well-worn path of Indian fast bowlers in recent times: start off mopping up plenty of wickets before gradually losing effectiveness over a few international seasons. It’s nearly two years now since RP played a Test, and his state fast-bowling mates, Praveen and Sudeep Tyagi, are ahead of him in the limited-overs pecking order. It’s been a lacklustre season so far – 20 wickets at 37.55 with no five-wicket hauls – and he doesn’t have too many more first-class games to impress the selectors.

Team news

Rahul Dravid said the final eleven won’t be chosen until he has had a look at the pitch on Sunday morning, but it will not be surprising if they retain the side that took on Punjab in the quarter-finals.Karnataka (likely) 1 Robin Uthappa, 2 KB Pawan, 3 G Satish, 4 Rahul Dravid (capt), 5 Manish Pandey, 6 Amit Verma, 7 CM Gautam (wk), 8 Sunil Joshi, 9 Vinay Kumar, 10 A Mithun, 11 S Aravind. With Praveen being available for the semi-finals, left-arm medium-pacer Shalabh Srivastava is likely to be sidelined. Chawla and Praveen Gupta will continue to share the spinning responsibilities.Uttar Pradesh (likely) 1 Tanmay Srivastava, 2 Shivkant Shukla, 3 Mohammad Kaif (capt), 4 Rohit Srivastava, 5 Parvinder Singh, 6 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 7 Piyush Chawla, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 Amir Khan (wk), 10 Praveen Gupta, 11 RP Singh

Pitch and conditions

The track at the Chinnaswamy Stadium is expected to be a flat one, with both captains saying they would like to bat first on winning the toss. “It will not be like Delhi,” joked the curator, Narayan Raju, referring to the abandoned one-dayer against Sri Lanka last week. He said there will be some bounce on the first day after which it will get a little slower. With both teams having plenty of batting depth, we might be in for a game similar to the one the last time these two teams faced each other at the Chinnaswamy Stadium; Karnataka piled on 511 after being sent in, only to see UP counter with 567 to take away three points from a drawn match.

Quotes

“I think they have the experience in the semi-final and final knock-out level but on current form and in this season we have the momentum and are playing a little bit better than they are.”

“One advantage we have is that we have seen their young players, like Pandey, who are coming in, playing their first season, that will help us have better plans when they come in to bat than in the first match [in Meerut].”
