There could be as many as four changes and a welcome sight in defence following fresh injury updates this week.

According to Warburton, there is a chance that Jordy de Wijs is able to feature despite suffering a broken nose up at Rotherham. “Hopefully he’ll be okay this morning and okay to travel,” the QPR boss revealed to West London Sport.

Whilst skipper Geoff Cameron is expected to be unavailable once again. Therefore, the backline should remain unchanged, meaning it will be Seng Dieng between the sticks, with de Wijs in between Yoann Barbet and Rob Dickie.

Osman Kakay has impressed at right wing-back, delivering an assist for Lyndon Dykes’ opener on Tuesday night, so he should keep Todd Kane out the side but Warburton should be able to welcome back Lee Wallace after a rest in midweek.

He’ll replace Niko Hamalainen on the left after a disastrous showing. The 24-year-old will be lucky to feature again this season after that performance.

In midfield, we could finally see Dominic Ball get a rare start with Stefan Johansen expected to remain as a key cog in that engine room.

There should also be returns for Chris Willock and Ilias Chair, who were both surprisingly dropped for the trip to Yorkshire – their creative presence in attacking midfield was sorely missed and Warburton will think twice before doing that again.

It means young duo George Thomas, 24 and Charlie Kelman, 19, will drop to the bench.

Dykes, who is in red-hot form with 12 goals for the season, will lead the line once more in the absence of the suspended Charlie Austin.

Everton teenager Thierry Small has been urged to be patient by Danny Mills following reported interest from Leeds United.

The 16-year-old is one of the most exciting young players in the pipeline at Goodison Park, making his first team debut in the FA Cup back in January and becoming the youngest player in the club’s history.

It is claimed that Small is unhappy with his potential pathway into the first team at Everton, though, leading to speculation surrounding his future. Leeds are believed to be one of the clubs eyeing up a move for him, with Manchester United and Arsenal also among the potential suitors, per Daily Express.

Mills offers Small advice amid Leeds interest

Speaking to Football Insider, former Whites defender Mills told Small to be patient over his future, seemingly putting him off a move to Elland Road for the time being:

“Just be good enough, that’s the advice. You’re 16, you’re not realistically going to get into the first team until you’re 18, 19 at the earliest.

“Learn your trade, get better at your trade. That’s the advice I’d be giving him. Work on your weaknesses, work on your positioning.

“Also, you need experience. In a year’s time or two year’s time, go out on loan. Go to some French second division side or some Dutch second division side to get some game time.

“Learn where it’s easier to get away with making mistakes. Learning at the highest level in the Championship or Premier League is hard because when you make a mistake you get slaughtered. The pressure’s on from your teammates, from your fans, from your manager and the coaches. My advice would be go and learn and get the experience away from the limelight.

“Then come back to it. It’s very difficult to put this into young players but don’t rush things. There are very few players who are top players at 19-years-old.”

Transfer Tavern take

It is always exciting to see Leeds linked with top English talent, so the hope is that they can eventually persuade Small to join the Marcelo Bielsa revolution.

Everton are no doubt keen to keep hold of the left-back, however, possibly seeing him as a long-term replacement for Lucas Digne.

Leeds have Leif Davis as a future option in that role, which could be a possible stumbling block when it comes to signing Small.

Dwight Gayle committed his future to Newcastle United despite having ‘grown frustrated with how he has been used by Steve Bruce’, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reports.

Waugh’s colleague David Ornstein revealed on Monday that Gayle had agreed to a new three-year contract at the club on reduced terms.

Gayle considered moving abroad amid Galatasaray interest

His contract was set to expire in June, meaning he could have left the club as a free agent. Gayle was apparently ‘receptive’ to the idea of moving overseas ‘in search of a lucrative final contract’.

Galatasaray were said to be said one of the clubs interested in acquiring his services (via Chronicle Live), but Waugh has claimed that the financial consequences of the pandemic made those options less attractive for the 31-year-old, who has not at any stage decisively pushed to leave.

Gayle on the periphery at Newcastle

The Englishman, who was out injured from the start of the season until December, has made 11 Premier League appearances this term (via Transfermarkt).

However, only two of those have been starts, and both have come as a winger – he lined up on the right away at Chelsea and on the left against Aston Villa – rather than through the middle.

Newcastle not preparing for the Championship

Gayle is a prolific Championship marksman, enjoying 23-goal campaigns in the second tier in 2016/17 and 2018/19 (via Transfermarkt), but Newcastle are not thought to be planning for relegation. Waugh insists that they would have sought to agree fresh terms with Gayle even if they were safe.

As it stands, they are two points clear of the bottom three with a game in hand.

A new deal for an out-of-favour forward who has already turned 30 reflects the challenges of the present market for clubs and players alike.

In other news, Newcastle fans have ranked their preferred alternatives to Steve Bruce.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has hailed Aston Villa assistant head coach Craig Shakespeare for the impact he has had at the club.

Shakespeare, who has spent time working with Leicester City and the England national team, was added to Villa’s backroom staff by manager Dean Smith in August 2020 as the 49-year-old looked to add more experience to his coaching team.

That coaching team, of course, also includes former Chelsea and England captain John Terry, and Palmer believes the ex-central defender and Shakespeare have played a massive part in Villa’s defensive improvement this season. He told FFC:

“Conceding goals was a major thing that they had to address. I think he’s [Smith] done a fantastic job, he really has. I think his recruitment of Craig Shakespeare… been number two to Nigel Pearson, number two to Sam Allardyce at Everton, fantastic. He really is a fantastic coach.

“So he’s done well recruiting that and, of course, he’s got an ex-England international centre-back there. So obviously that will help with the defensive side of things.”

Without a doubt, the Villans have been exceptional in defence this term. In 27 league games, Smith’s men have conceded just 28 goals (per WhoScored). Only Chelsea (25) and title favourites Manchester City (21) have managed to register better records in that department.

It is quite the shift from last season, with Villa conceding 67 goals by the end of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, the second-worst record in the division.

The Midlands club have also managed to keep 14 clean sheets this term, a number that only Chelsea (15) and Manchester City (16) can once again beat, really putting into perspective how solid they have been since last September.

Former Scotland international Alan Hutton believes that Celtic’s head of recruitment Gary Penrice deserves to lose his job.

The Bhoys spent a total of £14.13m (Transfermarkt) in the summer, opting to bring in the likes of Albian Ajeti, Vasilis Barkas and Shane Duffy on loan to bolster their hopes of winning an unprecedented 10-in-a-row.

However, that has not gone to plan with manager Neil Lennon resigning and reports suggested in January that transfer guru Nick Hammond could be dismissed in the summer in what could be a summer overhaul at Parkhead.

On top of this, Penrice has also been linked with a move out of the club after what has been a disastrous 2020/21 campaign for the green half of Glasgow.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton believes that Penrice is not up to the task anymore and expects him to be replaced this summer.

“They need to act, it’s as simple as that,” he said. “It’s not been good enough. It’s like any work you do, if you’re making mistake after mistake, you’re going to lose your job.

“You saw it happen at Aston Villa with Suso (Jesus Garcia Pitarch). He brought in so many players and it didn’t work out. He moved on and look at them now.

“I think if you go through the Celtic squad and what they brought in, yes they had some players that worked out but more often than not, it didn’t. They spent big money.

“It doesn’t surprise me they’re having a full shakeup, revamping everything.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

There is no doubt that Celtic need a revamp – and fast. But supporters will probably need to accept that the rebuild could take a few seasons to get right.

While there are huge expectations for the Hoops to reclaim the Scottish Premiership crown at the first time of asking, it may take a couple of campaigns to put the respective measures in place to eradicate the deadwood in the side.

Ajeti, Barkas and Duffy have been heavily criticised for their abject performances this season – and rightly so. Time will tell whether Penrice is moved on or if Dominic McKay will trust him to move the club forward.

وأشار إلي أن حالات الكورونا في النادي السعودي وصلت إلى 27.

سفيان بن دبكة يتواجد ضمن القائمة النهائية لمنتخب الجزائر التي أعلنها جمال بلماضي، لخوض غمار منافسات نهائيات كأس أمم إفريقيا.

وتعد إصابة بن دبكة هي الثالثة في منتخب الجزائر، بعد محمد أمين توغاي وحسن بن عيادة.

Sheffield Wednesday are seemingly no closer to appointing their next manager, though an interesting name has emerged as a possible option for them to consider this week…

What’s the word?

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, former Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy would be keen on taking the vacant Owls job, though he’s yet to be officially approached by the south Yorkshire outfit.

The 61-year-old was sacked by Cypriot club APOEL just two months into his tenure earlier this month and is now out of work once again, having stood down from his duties as Republic of Ireland boss in April 2020.

On the face of it, the appointment of McCarthy could be seen a good one as he has won promotion from the Championship twice in his managerial career, the most recent being in 2008/09 with Wolverhampton Wanderers, some 12 years ago.

However, that success is a thing of the past, and the fact that he has had to go to Cyprus to revive his domestic managerial career speaks volumes. He’s potentially well past his sell-by date.

Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri will want to avoid his credentials for another reason too. The Thai businessman pulled the trigger on Tony Pulis just ten games into his reign after picking up just one victory, and quickly cited his negative brand of football as a key reason.

“I told him I don’t like the old English style but he told me he wouldn’t play like that, his tactics would depend on the opponents,” Chansiri said to reporters after sacking the Welshman.

Well, McCarthy would be no different from Pulis.

Whilst in charge of Ireland, his playing style came under fire from those at the very top of their game.

Denmark midfielder Thomas Delaney once claimed that trying to score against McCarthy’s side was like “trying to open a can of baked beans with your bare hands,” whilst their teammate Mathias Jorgensen said in 2019: “They will come to our stadium, sit back and be happy to play for a draw.”

Swiss shot-stopper Yann Sommer even branded it a “very unpleasant style of football.”

Clearly McCarthy and Chansiri would be a match made in hell, so the Wednesday chairman must avoid sanctioning that appointment at all costs.
