Western Province beat Free State in the rain.

What should have been the clash of the titans, turned into a wet squid as rain in Cape Town forced the Standard Bank Cup fourth round match between Western Province and Free State into a 32 over smash and grab with the hosts running out victor by six

Keith Lane21-Dec-2002What should have been the clash of the titans, turned into a wet squid as rain in Cape Town forced the Standard Bank Cup fourth round match between Western Province and Free State into a 32 over smash and grab with the hosts running out victor by six wickets.Free Sate winning the toss batting first, on an overcast afternoon, lost the wicket of Jonathan Beukus in the second over minutes before rain forced the players off the field for three hours.Restarting with the game reduced to 32 overs Free State immediately lost the wicket of Morne van Wyk and then had to leave the field again as the Newlands lights went out.Play eventually got under way with Free State unable to recover or get on top of some good swing bowling from Charl Willoughby taking 3-29 in seven overs.A 44 from Neil Dippenaar helped the cause with Nicky Boje (20) and Rayno Arendse (28*) helping Free State to 125/7 when the 32 overs were completed. With the two breaks in the innings, and Free State having lost early wickets, the Duckworth/Lewis method calculated a Western Province target of 124.With the likes of Herschelle Gibbs, Graeme Smith, Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis in the Province line up the target was never going to be enough.Herman Bakkes was not going to let names get the better of him, having Gibbs (15) and Smith (12) back in the pavilion to leave Western Province 33/2 in the eighth over.Gary Kirsten, in excellent recent form, stabilised the innings with the help of first HD Ackerman scoring 17, and then Andrew Puttick making 15. Kirsten finished on an undefeated 53, seeing the hosts through to a 6-wicket win.For Free State, Bakkes ended with 2-26, Boje 1-27 and Allan Donald 0-19.

Tuanzebe can be West Ham’s next Ferdinand

Axel Tuanzebe could emerge as a West Ham target this summer, an Irons insider has claimed…

What’s the word?

According to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee, the Manchester United defender is someone that Hammers boss David Moyes likes and a potential loan-to-buy deal could happen if the club does not land other targets.

Speaking on a recent episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast, he said:

“Speaking of Manchester United, it’s been confirmed that Axel Tuanzebe is available on loan.

“Now I do know that David Moyes likes him, so he could be someone who we potential look to loan with a clause to buy – that’s if we don’t get our other targets.”

Indeed, it’s thought that the 23-year-old centre-back will request a loan move away from Old Trafford this off-season in order to gain regular first-team minutes.

Next Ferdinand

It could be argued that signing defensive reinforcements is a low priority at the London Stadium right now but Moyes could soon have a shortage of options, with Fabian Balbuena leaving next week as well as the futures of Issa Diop and Winston Reid in doubt.

That could leave the Scot with just Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna as his only two recognised centre-backs, and both are in this thirties.

At just 23, Tuanzebe could prove to be an interesting solution, particularly if it’s initially on loan as it would save the Irons plenty of funds that could be used to bolster other areas.

Despite being highly rated by the Red Devils’ hierarchy, the 6 foot 1 defender has been restricted to only 37 appearances since his debut in January 2017.

He’s gone out on loan before, winning promotion to the Premier League at Aston Villa, but he has still struggled to find a way past the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly in the pecking order.

The £7.2m-rated gem is versatile enough to play at right-back and in midfield too, drawing comparisons to ex-Bayern star Javi Martinez, though it is his comparisons to a former Hammer that is even more exciting.

It’s thought that Tuanzebe could go on to become Man Utd’s next Rio Ferdinand, a player who started his career in East London.

Last season, the former England U21 international drew high praise from his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a particularly emphatic display against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

“It’s an unbelievable performance by him. He’s only trained for a couple of weeks and he’s absolutely spot on,” claimed the Norweigen to the club’s official website.

“Axel’s a tremendous defender, a great leader. He’s come through the Academy and we’ve known for years that he’s going to be a top player for us and he’s got the character and the attitude that a Man United player should have.”

Given the likely central defensive situation at the club heading into pre-season, Moyes would be crazy to not try and push for Tuanzebe on loan. He could be a bargain fix to a likely problem.

Everton fans on Richarlison call-up

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as news emerged involving Richarlison.

As per the Brazil international team’s official Twitter page, he has been called up to their squad for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The Games do not end until Sunday 8 August, and the Toffees’ first fixture of the new 2021/22 Premier League season is at home against Southampton the following Saturday.

Given that he has been involved in the Copa America as well, it means that Richarlison is very likely to miss that first game against the Saints and maybe a few more after that, depending on how much rest he is given by Rafa Benitez.

Nonetheless, it is no surprise to see so many Everton supporters fuming, as it is likely that they will be without the 24-year-old for the start of the campaign.

Pundit says Spurs should sell Tanguy Ndombele and Gio Lo Celso

Graham Roberts reckons that Tottenham should get rid of both Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso this summer.

The pair cost around £100m when they were signed in the same transfer window by Mauricio Pochettino in 2019.

However, neither have been able to fulfil their potential, whilst they’ve contributed to just 13 goals in 100 Premier League games combined – with Ndombele chipping in with nine and Lo Celso only four.

Ndombele was a regular under Jose Mourinho last season after failing to settle in his first campaign in England, although Argentine attacking midfielder Lo Celso has started just 26 games in the league having failed to nail down a starting place.

They sit first and third in Tottenham’s record arrivals list, but Roberts exclusively reckons that neither player can cope with the pace of the Premier League.

Asked which players he could see Tottenham selling this summer, the ex-Spurs skipper exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“I think Lo Celso and Ndombele. They’ve had two seasons, and they’re not scoring goals or assisting, they need to move on. I would look for a creative midfield player.

“I’m not sure what position Ndombele plays, Lo Celso is always injured. The league is too powerful for them, they can’t get to the pace of the league, and if you can’t get to the pace of the league, you’re a waste of time.”

England's county competitions: an introduction

The English county system takes in four major competitions during the course of the northern domestic summer. The oldest and most famous of these is the first-class competition, known this year as the Frizzell County Championship. The other three – the Benson & Hedges Cup, the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy, and the Norwich Union League – are all one-day competitions but each assumes a different format.Frizzell County Championship – this is England’s major first-class competition and consists of a series of four-day matches. The 18 county teams are split into two groups – Division One and Division Two – on the basis of their finishing positions the previous season. The top nine counties from last year are joined in battle in Division One; the bottom nine are grouped to form Division Two, as follows:Division One: Kent, Hampshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Somerset, Surrey, Sussex, Warwickshire and Yorkshire.Division Two: Derbyshire, Durham, Essex, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire. The side which finishes at the top of the Division One standings at the end of the season is the winner of the competition. There is also a promotion and relegation component. The three sides which finish at the bottom of Division One are relegated to Division Two for 2003. Conversely, the three sides which end at the top of the Division Two standings are promoted to Division One for 2003.Benson & Hedges Cup – a limited-overs competition which incorporates two separate phases. The county teams are initially divided into three groups of six (as shown below) and take part in a round-robin series of matches against opponents from within those groups.North: Derbyshire, Durham, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.Midland/Wales/West: Glamorgan, Northamptonshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.South: Essex, Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex. At the end of these matches, the top two teams from each pool go forward to the quarter-finals. Joining them are the two teams which finish third in their groups and attain more points than the other third-placed finisher. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are knockout affairs and precede a Final at Lord’s on 22 June. All of the matches are scheduled as 50-overs-per-side.The 2002 season is scheduled to be the last in which the Benson & Hedges Cup is played. Under a series of recommendations recently adopted by the England and Wales Cricket Board, it is due to be replaced by a 20-over competition at the start of 2003.Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy – sponsored by a major financial services company, this is a straight knockout competition which pits the 18 counties against minor county teams and county board sides, many of which are purely amateur teams. Each of the 18 major county teams receives a bye through to the third round of a competition that could loosely be depicted as cricket’s version of the FA Cup. Like the Benson and Hedges Cup, the matches are played over a total of 100 overs and the Final is contested at Lord’s, although this decider comes far later in the season – on 31 August.Norwich Union League – this is the most time-intensive of all three of the one-day competitions in that its programme lasts from 12 May until 22 September.Complete with coloured clothing, floodlit matches and nicknames for all of the teams, the competition shares a number of traits with many of the world’s major domestic one-day series. Where it differs is in the notion that the matches are 45-over-per-side contests.Like the County Championship, the competition is split into two divisions and promotion and relegation is a feature.Based on the teams’ finishing positions at the end of last summer, the divisions have been configured as follows for 2002:Division One: Durham Dynamos, Glamorgan Dragons, Kent Spitfires, Leicestershire Foxes, Nottinghamshire Outlaws, Somerset Sabres, Warwickshire Bears, Worcestershire Royals and Yorkshire Phoenix.Division Two: Derbyshire Scorpions, Essex Eagles, Gloucestershire Gladiators, Hampshire Hawks, Lancashire Lightning, Middlesex Crusaders, Northamptonshire Steelbacks, Surrey Lions, Sussex Sharks.Again, the champion team is the one that ends the season at the head of the Division One standings.

  • The 2002 English domestic season commences on 13 April and will conclude on 22 September.

Sharjah offers chance for second tier development

New Zealand’s one-day team to tour Sharjah and Pakistan is to be named tomorrow on what should be the next phase of the side’s World Cup ’03 development. But such is the injury count at the moment that it can only be an exercise in match strategy involving some of the second tier of players who may or may not be called on in the final count, depending on the injuries down the line.Out of consideration are: Chris Cairns, Shane Bond, Dion Nash and it could be that the national selectors decide that Daniel Vettori deserves a rest in preparation for the Pakistan Test series which follows the two one-day exercises in Sharjah and Pakistan.Fourteen players are to be named for the tour which includes a minimum of four games in Sharjah and three in Pakistan. In Sharjah, New Zealand play Sri Lanka on April 9, Pakistan on April 11, Sri Lanka on April 14 and Pakistan again on April 15.The tournament final is to be played on April 17.The basis of the side obviously has to be the team which beat England 3-2 and which made the finals of the VB Series in Australia. That would see: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Lou Vincent, Chris Harris, Daryl Tuffey and Andre Adams as certainties for the side.Chris Nevin should be retained as wicket-keeper and with the absence of Adam Parore for future consideration, there is a chance for him to claim the position for himself with the gloves and as an opener. If the selectors decide that Vettori is still in good enough condition to make the tour then he too, will be in the automatic category. However, if he is rested, then Auckland’s Brooke Walker must be the favoured option. He has had chances in the past and while he was covering for injury to Vettori, there must be hope that he has had a chance to absorb the lessons and be reconsidered.Glen Sulzberger has also been part of the mix in recent times and it could be that he gains his place if two spinners are preferred. One important decision that will be made is whether Brendon McCullum holds his place in the squad. He is a long term investment by the selectors and he has too much to offer to be placed on the substitutes’ bench and he should retain his spot.James Franklin should also be recalled to the side to continue his education in international play and his recent run scoring for Wellington will have been appreciated by the selectors.Another consideration will be Central Districts’ captain Jacob Oram back in action after missing much of the season with a foot injury. He was shaping as a key element in New Zealand’s one-day planning after last summer and given the on-going problems with Cairns, he should be a consideration for the side. The final choice will be in the bowling attack. Whether Scott Styris offers anything more in the bowling than that offered already in the attack and it may be that a workhorse-type of bowler like Chris Drum, especially with the Pakistan leg of the tour in mind, catches the selectors’ eyes. That would leave the team possibly looking like: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Chris Nevin, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Lou Vincent, Chris Harris, Daniel Vettori/Brooke Walker, Glen Sulzberger, Daryl Tuffey, Andre Adams, James Franklin, Jacob Oram, Chris Drum.

Pakistan Probables win comfortably as Youhana shines with the bat

Yousuf Youhana and Abdur Razzaq shared a third wicket partnership of 137 runs to lead Pakistan Probables to three-wicket win over Karachi Young at the National Stadium, after being reduced to 7 for two in only the second over of the innings,in their search for 202.

The batting skills displayed by both these stalwarts was full of precision and maturity as they weathered the opening hostile spell from Mohammad Sami and Saad Altaf with exquisite concentration. Once settling in, they led an all out offensive on the Karachi bowlers as the home side, led by Rashid Latif, found it hard to contain the free flow of runs.Youhana emulated his performance at Lahore, where he scored 96 against Lahore Tigers, to become the highest scorer of the match. He made a fine 75 off 124 balls, which contained 8 hits to the fence. His partner was equally proficient in his batting skills as, after given a chance in the first slip by Arshad, he commanded his authority over the bowlers by getting 56 with the help of 8 fours and one six. After the fall of Youhana’s wicket at 160 in the 38th over, the going was quite easy for the middle order batsmen of Probables. However, they made a mess of things, losing seven wickets in all until they reached the target in the 46th over.Earlier, Rashid Latif, the captain of the Karachi Young, had won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch, which had no grass on it.After losing the wicket of Naumanullah cheaply, Shadab Kabir, the left-handed opener of Karachi shared a partnership of 91 for the second wicket along with Faisal Iqbal to set a solid foundation for their team. However, this opportunity was not efficiently grabbed by the middle order batsmen of Karachi. They failed miserably to score quick runs in the later stages of their innings, as they ended up on 201 for 8 in the allotted fifty overs. The spin duo of Mushtaq Ahmed and Shoaib Malik, bowled superbly for the Probables, as they tested the batsmen with teasing line and length. They did not only break the threatening partnership between Shadab and Faisal, but also gave little liberty to the late order to score quick runs off them.Mushtaq and Shoaib took two wickets each for 47 and 31, respectively, in their ten overs, whereas the skipper, Wasim Akram bagged one wicket for 27 runs in nine overs.Yousuf Youhana, after yet another valiant show with the bat, was awarded man of the match, whereas Yasir Arafat was declared the best fielder. The fourth match of the series will be played on the 31st of January at the Shahi Bagh Stadium, Peshawar.

Man City linked with Yves Bissouma

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma recently – and should he join Pep Guardiola’s side this summer, it would be a huge blow for Premier League rivals Liverpool, who have also been regularly linked with the Mali international in recent months.

According to the Daily Star, City are ‘confident’ of signing the 24-year-old this summer despite interest from the Reds along with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

The report suggested that City are in the market for a midfielder due to doubts about Fernandinho’s future with the club, and whilst Brighton are resigned to losing Bissouma this summer, they are expected to demand around £30m for him.

This would see them earn a significant profit on the £15m they paid to sign him from Lille in 2018, a deal which looks to have been a shrewd purchase by the Seagulls given his impressive performances since joining.

Bissouma has gone on to make 92 appearances for the Sussex club, in which he has contributed four goals and one assist, so he has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt already.

His recent displays for Graham Potter’s side have been quite impressive, as he has earned above a 7/10 rating from WhoScored in each of his last six Premier League appearances, so it is easy to see why he is attracting so much interest ahead of next season.

Notably, his average of 2.8 tackles per game is better than anyone in Guardiola’s squad and almost double Fernandinho’s 1.5 match average.

Whilst the “exceptional” Bissouma – as hailed by Gary Lineker – could prove to be an excellent long-term replacement for Fernandinho in Guardiola’s side, his potential arrival would also strike a huge blow to one of City’s possible title rivals for next season in Liverpool.

Although Jurgen Klopp’s side have endured a nightmare 2020/21 season, it seems likely that with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez available next term, they will be challenging at the top again, so City could get an early edge on the Merseyside club by signing Bissouma.

It seems as if the Reds are keen to bring in the Brighton ace as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who looks set to depart Anfield in the summer when his contract expires, so it would be a significant blow for Klopp’s side if City were to beat them to the signing of the 24-year-old.

Therefore, City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain should definitely consider a move for the Mali midfielder this season, as he could prove to be an excellent addition for a number of reasons.

In other news… Txiki can sign Pep his ideal Fernandinho heir with swoop for “outstanding” Premier League star
