Celtic: Hart played role in Carter-Vickers move

Cameron Carter-Vickers spoke with Joe Hart over a move from Tottenham to Celtic and could have joined Torino, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: One of three in

The Hoops were extremely busy in the final hours of the transfer window, with three players in and three out at Parkhead on deadline day.

Carter-Vickers was the final deal of the day and Celtic’s 12th signing of the window. He penned a season-long loan move to Parkhead, with the Hoops having the option to make it permanent next summer. However, it could have been a different story for the USA international.

The Latest: Torino snub, Hart conversation

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a Spurs source, Tottenham actually accepted a loan offer from Torino for Carter-Vickers. However, the 23-year-old turned down a move to Italy as he wanted to stay in the UK.

He revealed to Celtic TV that a conversation with Joe Hart, who is on £15,000 per week at Celtic Park and previously played for the Serie A side, helped to convince him to move to Scotland.

The Verdict: A shrewd move?

It appears as if Carter-Vickers may well have ended up elsewhere if it wasn’t for Hart, and only time will tell if bringing the American to Glasgow will be a good call.

The good thing is that the Hoops now hold the cards when it comes to the defender. Should he impress, Celtic can exercise a clause to make the move permanent. If he struggles, the Hoops can always send him back to London at the end of the campaign without making a major financial commitment.

Preview of the 1st Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Mirpur

Match facts December 26-31, 2008
Start time 09.30am (03.30 GMT)Big Picture”We are going to Bangladesh with an open mind.” With these words, Mahela Jayawardene signalled that his team would guard against any sort of complacency when facing the weakest Test nation, and with good reason. Leading teams usually expect a cakewalk each time they set foot in Bangladesh but, only a couple of months ago, New Zealand were made to scrap for every run and wicket against a Bangladesh side reeling from the desertions to the ICL. Their slow bowlers thrived on pitches suited to them and the trend is likely to continue against Sri Lanka as well. The pace of cricket against New Zealand was far from attractive – Bangladesh scored barely above one run an over in the opening session of the first Test – but, for a change, the home side – especially the lower order – showed a willingness to occupy the crease and could stretch the match till the fifth day, when they went down fighting. They havelost seven of eight Tests this year (and drawn one) but have the chance to end on a positive note.Sri Lanka last played a Test in August and, with next month’s tour of Pakistan not yet confirmed and no Tests scheduled for another seven months, they will welcome the opportunity for five-day cricket. Though they are coming off an unconvincing tour of Zimbabwe, the players have been busy enough in the domestic season to satisfy Jayawardene. The top order failed to impress in the tour game in Savar and they will be challenged further in the Tests, especially against the spinners. They will be without Ajantha Mendis – who twisted his ankle – for the first Test at least but Bangladesh will still have to contend with Muttiah Muralitharan. The first Test in Mirpur sees the return of the rest day, with no play possible on December 29 because of the parliamentary elections. With an overdose of spin expected, there will be plenty of enquiries and the umpires will be under immense pressure to get their decisions spot on, with no referrals system to lean on.Form guide (last five Tests, most recent first)Sri Lanka WLWLW
Bangladesh LLDLLWatch out forShakib Al Hasan
In the absence of Abdur Razzak, Shakib will shoulder the bulk of the bowling with Enamul Haque jnr. Shakib’s in the form of his life, picking up 21 wickets in the last four Tests and recording the best innings figures by a Bangladesh bowler in Tests (7 for 36). He averages 24.33 with the bat in seven Tests this year and is in the team as a genuine allrounder.Rangana Herath
Mendis may not be around for the Tests but Herath, his replacement, is already proving to be quite a handful. His 6 for 16 bundled out a hapless Bangladesh Cricket Board XI for 88 in the practice game at Savar. His appearances for Sri Lanka have been very sporadic but he now has another chance to make a mark.Team newsSri Lanka are still waiting on the fitness of Kumar Sangakkara, who sustained a cut in his right foot after arriving in Dhaka. He missed the warm-up game in Savar but Prasanna Jayawardene, the regular Test wicketkeeper, found form with 70. If Sangakkara misses out, Chamara Kapugedera could get a promotion.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Michael Vandort, 2 Malinda Warnapura, 3 Kumar Sangakkara/Chamara Kapugedera, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Tillakaratne Dishan, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Dammika Prasad, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Muttiah MuraliatharanBangladesh made two changes to the squad that toured South Africa, recalling batsman Rajin Saleh, who should give them the grit they need, and Enamul Haque jnr. Haque makes a comeback to the Test squad after the tour of New Zealand this January, following the recent ban on Razzak for chucking. Haque comes off a stint with Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy in India, picking up seven wickets in four games. “The level of cricket I have played in India recently will really help me because it is almost of international standard,” Haque was quoted as saying in the . “Preparing for those matches made me mentally strong and I believe I can now handle pressure better.”Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Junaid Siddique / Raqibul Hasan, 3 Imrul Kayes / Rajin Saleh, 4 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 5 Mehrab Hossain jnr, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk) ,8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Enamul Haque jnr, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11, Mahbubul AlamPitch and conditionsRain washed out three days of the Test against New Zealand in October but the forecast for the next five days is far more encouraging. A slow turner is expected.Stats and TriviaBefore Shakib’s bounty of 21 wickets in the last four Tests, he had just three wickets from six games. Both teams are facing each other for the first time at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. Spinners have taken 28 of the 73 wickets taken at this venue.Quotes”I have bowled well against New Zealand and South Africa but Sri Lanka are a different proposition. I was a part-timer when I faced them last time.”
“Their bowling is really frightening. Most of the teams have either a good pace attack or a good spin attack, but Sri Lanka are good in both departments.”
“We bowled very well and our middle order also batted well, though the top order disappointed me.”

Ashley Preece delivers update on Villa’s Guilbert

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered an insight into the decision to let Aston Villa star Frederic Guilbert join Strasbourg on loan on transfer deadline day.

What’s the story?

Dean Smith’s side had a fairly quiet deadline day after a more hectic summer transfer window saw the likes of Emi Buendia, Danny Ings and Leon Bailey, among others arrive, and Jack Grealish of course leave.

One piece of business the Midlands club did do however, is sending Guilbert back to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, where he spent the second-half of last season on loan at.

And now, in a Q&A for The Birmingham Mail, Preece responded to a question about why the Smith decided to let him go, saying: “Not sure, just doesn’t fancy him at all. A shame because he seems a good guy who always put it all on the line for Villa.”

Villa fans will be frustrated

Writing for The Athletic last year, Gregg Evans said of Guilbert: “I agree, there’s potential, but it seems like Smith has seen enough and favours others.”

A number of Villa fans have already made their feelings clear about Guilbert on several occasions, first slamming the decision to actually let him leave on loan for Strasbourg back in January and suggesting they should’ve kept him, then urging Smith to give him a chance in pre-season earlier this summer after his impressive spell away.

The fact that both Evans and Preece have declared that Smith just isn’t the biggest fan of the full-back is sure to frustrate fans who would have been hoping to see him in action for Villa, and challenging Matty Cash for a first-team spot, or just providing a back-up option for him.

This latest update from Preece is a “shame” as Preece says, and it’s one that won’t have gone down too well with Villa supporters.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has confirmed this Aston Villa starlet will sign a new contract…

As derrotas aconteceram no Allianz Parque (5) e Pacaembu (1).

Pakistan's fate in the balance

Will the Champions Trophy stay in Pakistan? © AFP

Just 20 days after it managed to strike a delicate balance over the Zimbabwe crisis, the ICC will once again be walking the tightrope over a teleconference spanning continents which starts at 10.30 GMT on Thursday – and this time, its executive board will hope to arrive at a consensus among the eight participating nations on the issue of staging the Champions Trophy in Pakistan this September. As in the Zimbabwe crisis, which was resolved during the ICC annual conference in Dubai early this month with the country retaining its full membership while pulling out of the ICC World Twenty20 in England, the ICC hopes that a consensus decision will ensure that the tournament goes ahead as scheduled at the original venue or in Sri Lanka, the alternate venue. However, once again, strong opinions have emerged on either side of this issue. Players from England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have expressed serious concerns over the prevailing security climate in Pakistan, and their representatives have warned of a pullout if the tournament goes ahead in that country. They seem to have the strong backing of their respective boards, too, except for Cricket South Africa (CSA) which seems to be of the view that Pakistan needs to be given “every opportunity to host the tournament to the best of their ability”.On the other side, India is leading the group of Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the hosts, who are determined that the event needs to go ahead as scheduled. They believe that the security briefing last Sunday by the ICC for officials of the eight participating nations, broadcast executives and players’ representatives, has not pointed to any specific threat and has been “positive” about Pakistan’s status.”The Indian board sees ‘no harm’ in Pakistan hosting the tournament as scheduled,” Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, told Cricinfo. “We are supporting Pakistan as the venue of the Champions Trophy. Our Indian team had taken part in the Asia Cup without any incident. Besides, the report of the ICC’s security consultants, which was presented during the briefing in Dubai (on Sunday) was positive. So the BCCI sees no harm in Pakistan hosting the tournament.”In fact, a few hours before Thursday’s teleconference, when asked whether the tournament would go ahead as scheduled in Pakistan, a senior BCCI official shot back: “Why not?”It’s understood though that if there is stiff opposition to playing in Pakistan, especially from England, Australia and New Zealand, and the ICC reiterates its inability to provide any safety guarantees, the Indian board may suggest that the tournament be shifted to Sri Lanka, the alternate venue. Besides ensuring that the tournament stays in Asia – South Africa or England are being touted as the preferred alternatives by those who are hesitant to play in Pakistan – Indian officials believe that the current security climate in Sri Lanka, where India is playing a Test series, is peaceful and conducive for hosting the tournament.

Tony Irish, the chief executive of the South Africa Cricketers Association (SACA), said that there was a possibility of top players from his country pulling out if the tournament went ahead as scheduled

Duleep Mendis, the chief executive of Sri Lanka Cricket, had told Cricinfo earlier this week that his country was “very confident” of hosting the event if it was moved out of Pakistan. “We are confident that we can hold the tournament within the short span of time if it’s not possible to hold it in Pakistan,” Mendis said. “We had confirmed our name as alternate hosts some time back and we stand by that. We are prepared logistically and on the security front and are very confident about hosting the tournament, if it comes to us.”Another option that may be discussed during Thursday’s teleconference is postponing the event, even though Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, has said, “We are trying our best to hold the tournament as per schedule and hope that it is not postponed.”As of now though, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are learnt to be firmly behind Pakistan, the official host, which also appears to have gained the unexpected support of Norman Arendse, the CSA president.”We must give Pakistan every opportunity to host the tournament to the best of their ability,” Arendse told . “I’m inclined to support Pakistan’s hosting of the tournament. I know it might sound easy for us as administrators to make such decisions as we stay home while the players go to Pakistan, but I assure you it is not so.”Yet, officials on either side of the issue, and especially the ICC, realise that the executive board will have to seriously consider the threat of a pullout by top cricketers from England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, which would end up diluting the tournament’s value and severely denting its credibility.Speaking to Cricinfo, Tony Irish, the chief executive of the South Africa Cricketers Association (SACA), said that there was a possibility of top players from his country pulling out if the tournament went ahead as scheduled (from September 11) in Pakistan. “I can’t confirm this, but yes, there could be some players pulling out,” he said.Irish said that the players reiterated their concern at touring Pakistan after the SACA reported back to them on the ICC’s security briefing in Dubai, which Irish attended. At the meeting, the players’ representatives were told that the governing body or the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) couldn’t give any foolproof security guarantees. “We have serious concerns with the security situation in Pakistan, especially after the briefing in Dubai,” Irish said. This view has found a loud echo in England, Australia and New Zealand.Against this backdrop, it’s understood that the ICC board, while taking a final call on Pakistan, will also consider a report on the security briefing conducted by the ICC last Sunday. However, the report does not contain any specific recommendation – either way.

Leeds: Lewis O’Brien wants move

Leeds United have learned that midfield target Lewis O’Brien is keen to join, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown

The same publication claimed on Friday that ‘preliminary talks’ over a deal for the Huddersfield Town ace are underway.

O’Brien made 42 Championship appearances for the Terriers last season, scoring three goals and providing as many assists.

An all-round option, he averaged two tackles, one interception, 1.1 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per 90 minutes over the course of the campaign (via WhoScored).

O’Brien, Huddersfield’s Player of the Year in 2019/20, has been praised for his ‘incredible’ fitness levels and ‘never seems to get tired’.

The 22-year-old is into the final year of his deal, but the club have the option to extend it for a further 12 months. He’s valued at £2.7million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

The Whites have reportedly been ‘given encouragement via third parties’ that the ‘ambitious’ O’Brien wants to play Premier League football under Marcelo Bielsa.

Now, though, ‘much will depend’ on whether Leeds are willing to meet Huddersfield’s demands.

O’Brien is apparently viewed as an alternative to Conor Gallagher, who opted to joined Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea.

The verdict

O’Brien would be a real asset to Leeds given his versatility – he’s been used as a central midfielder, no. 10, left-back and left midfielder – not to mention his aforementioned lung capacity, making him a perfect fit for Bielsa’s intense system.

You can understand why they missed out on Gallagher. Game-time would have been his priority when going out on loan, and there’s considerably less at competition at Palace.

O’Brien, by contrast, is eager to make the move, and the signs are that he ticks all the boxes as a plan-B.

In other news, a Serie A expert has delivered a major update on Leeds’ pursuit of Nahitan Nandez.

Have Celtic found their new Chris Sutton?

This has been a promising start to Celtic’s season, with the Hoops moving through European qualification and sitting level on points with their fiercest rivals in the league.

The Hoops may not stand a chance of reaching the Champions League group stage this term but there is still plenty to be positive about since Ange Postecoglou walked through the door.

From an offensive point of view, the Bhoys have warmed Parkhead with some phenomenal displays. A return of 13 goals in their last three games tells the story of a team who have excelled with new signings Kyogo Furuashi and Liel Abada in their ranks.

However, with Odsonne Edouard still seeking an exit, they will need a replacement to fill his goal-laden boots.

Celtic have considered OH Leuven forward Thomas Henry, who racked up 21 goals last season, ranking him as the second-highest scorer in the Belgian top-flight.

He has netted 45 times for the club in total following two remarkable campaigns in front of goal and, as a result, he is now on the verge of a whopping £7m move.

A fresh challenge beckons for the Frenchman, and if he arrives at Parkhead, he could be the club’s new Chris Sutton, just with a bit of extra pace thrown in.

Sutton was a wonderful servant to the Glasgow club, finding the net on 63 occasions in the Premiership.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-transfer-news-larsson-lovric-thomas-henry-diego-costa-postecoglou” title=”Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Many of those goals came with his ruthless heading ability, swatting opponents to one side as he bullied defenders with titanic physicality.

Writing in the Independent, journalist Ryan Baldi once said: “With a strong leap, well-developed neck muscles and precise timing, Sutton’s aerial abilities made him a constant threat in the opposition’s penalty area. And the remarkable range from which he could land powerful headers on target brought him solace in one of the most difficult periods of his career.”

That’s an area where Thomas is also adept. Although he possesses the ability to run in behind, it’s his immense physical power which makes him such a difficult player for opponents to handle.

The 26-year-old competes in 15.2 attacking duels per 90 minutes, winning 42% of them. That puts the French forward in the 96th percentile for that statistic among players in a similar league.

He also battles 7.3 aerial duels per 90, prevailing in 45%. Once again, that’s one of the best tallies out there, with Thomas ranking in the 95th percentile for duels off the ground.

Described as a player who can “cause havoc” by Lokeren manager Karel Fraeye, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that Henry could be exactly like Sutton at Celtic.

Sir Viv seeing all-rounder In one-day light

Sir Vivian Richards, chairman of the West Indies selection panel, says Vasbert Drakes will be considered for the squad for the seven limited-overs internationals against India that follow the three Tests

12-Sep-2002Sir Vivian Richards, chairman of the West Indies selection panel, says Vasbert Drakes will be considered for the squad for the seven limited-overs internationals against India that follow the three Tests. The selection panel drafted Drakes into the side for the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka but did not pick him for the Test series tour to India.Speaking prior to his departure yesterday for Sri Lanka Sir Viv said: "At the time of his selection, I spoke with Vasbert and made it clear the selection panel felt that the nature of limited-overs cricket and the closeness of the 2003 World Cup meant we needed players like him who could bat and bowl effectively in this form of the game."Having reviewed a few of our matches in recent time, the panel felt that our lower batting urgently needed to be addressed in the limited-overs form of the game, and the way Vasbert handles the bat it was felt he would add to our side."Rev. Wes Hall, president of the West Indies Cricket Board, noted Drakes still had opportunities to play professional cricket in between assignments for the regional team."Vasbert is free to gain employment anywhere as long as he has a clause inserted in his contract that he must be released to play for West Indies whenever picked and that by January he makes himself available to either Barbados or the West Indies team," Hall said.

Desde a primeira rodada do Campeonato Mi-
