Malla ton sets up big Nepal win

A round-up of the World Cricket League Division Three matches played on October 26, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Oct-2014A century from Gyanendra Malla, followed by four-wicket hauls from seamer Sompal Kami and left-arm spinner Basant Regmi helped Nepal crush Singapore by 190 runs in Selangor.Having been asked to bat, Nepal recovered from losing Subash Khakurel off the second ball of the innings to post a competitive 263 for 9. Their innings was built on Malla’s 125-ball 114, and his two big stands with Naresh Budayair and Sharad Vesawkar. Malla added 73 for the second wicket with Budayair, before his 111-run partnership with Vesawkar took Nepal past 200. Malla was eventually dismissed in the 44th over, having struck 13 fours and a six, but quick contributions down the order from Regmi and Sagar Pun provided Nepal a late surge.Singapore failed to get going in their chase, and were bundled out for 73 in 21.4 overs. Chetan Suryawanshi was the team’s top scorer with 15, and one of only four batsmen to reach double digits. Kami finished with 4 for 41, while Regmi picked up 4 for 6 in 5.4 overs to complete the big win.Fifties from Christian Burgess and Lionel Cann set up Bermuda’s 74-run D/L win against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Batting first, Bermuda were pegged back by wickets at regular intervals and fell to 98 for 4 before Burgess (82) and Cann (51) counter-attacked with an 80-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Burgess fell in the 44th over, but Allan Douglas thumped a 14-ball 43, including six sixes in the space of eight deliveries, to lift the team to 257 for 8.Malaysia were well-placed at 104 for 2 in the chase before a rain interruption reduced the game to a 43-over contest, with a revised target of 217. Anwar Arudin and Ahmed Faiz added 77 for the second wicket, but after Arudin’s wicket in the 12th over, the team failed to gather the required acceleration to gun down the target. Faiz top-scored with 87, but Malaysia lost six wickets for just 93 runs, as they could only manage 179 for 7 from their 43 overs. Offspinner Dion Stovell was the pick of Bermuda’s bowlers, and ended with figures of 9-0-29-3.Opener Roger Mukasa’s 71 and offspinner Frank Nsubuga’s four-for proved crucial, as Uganda won a rain-affected clash against USA by 24 runs according to the D/L method.Mukasa struck four fours and two sixes during his knock to provide a solid platform, before other handy contributions from Uganda’s middle order lifted the score to 215 for 8. Timil Patel collected 3 for 42 for USA, while Muhammad Ghous and Danial Ahmed snared two wickets apiece.USA failed to gather any momentum in the chase, as Nsubuga wrecked the team’s top order on his way to taking 4 for 14. Srini Santhanam was USA’s top scorer with 37, but he was run out in the 33rd over, and when rain prematurely ended the game three overs later, USA were found to be 24 short.

Essex fightback denies Wheater

Essex clinched their place in the Royal London Cup quarter-finals with a thrilling five-run win over Hampshire at Chelmsford.Half-centuries from Jesse Ryder, Tom Westley and Ravi Bopara had laid the foundation for their imposing total – but at one stage it did not look enough as Adam Wheater showed his liking for the home attack. He struck a brilliant 135 runs from only 97 deliveries, which followed the century he scored against his former colleagues when the sides met in the County Championship at Colchester last month. When Wheater was out, caught at mid-off by Graham Napier off Ryan ten Doeschate, his side needed just 55 runs from 10 overs, with six wickets intact. His main accomplice was James Vince, the pair sharing in a partnership of 198 in 28 overs, a county record for any partnership against Essex in List A matches. They would have expected that stand to have carried their side to victory.Essex skipper Ryan ten Doeschate said: “It was a fantastic win. While Wheater and Vince were together, it did not look good for us but we kept on fighting to get over the line.”The first part of our mission has been accomplished by getting into the quarter-finals but now we want victory at Northampton to put us in line for a home draw.”Vince made 79 from 83 deliveries, 26 of his runs coming in boundaries, before he fell to a superb catch by Tim Phillips at long-on – providing David Masters with one of his three wickets. But Essex made things difficult for themselves by spurning opportunities to remove both batsmen.Wheater, on 73, was let off as James Foster missed a comparatively easy stumping off Phillips with the total on 175, while Vince was put down by Kishen Velani on the square-leg boundary in the next over when attacking ten Doeschate. The pair had come together after Masters had removed openers Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry in the space of three deliveries with the total on 48 in the ninth over. After Wheater’s dismissal, the Hampshire innings disintegrated and they fell behind the asking rate in the face of some fine ground fielding and tight bowling. They lost five more wickets while adding 43 runs, including that of Chris Wood – who was run out by ten Doeschate off the penultimate ball.James Tomlinson arrived with six needed to tie the match but he could only manage a single, ending any hopes Hampshire entertained by that stage.Masters finished with 3 for 51 and Napier 2 for 58, the Essex attack having been handicapped earlier by Tymal Mills leaving the field with a muscle injury during his third over.Essex had been put into bat and Westley and Pettini gave them a solid start with a stand of 80 before the latter was caught down the leg side by Wheater off Matt Coles with the last delivery of the 15th over.Westley, fresh from his unbeaten century on Monday against Yorkshire, then took part in another productive stand of 81 in 13 overs with Ryder as they underlined the friendly nature of the pitch. Both were run out. Westley had made 74 from 79 balls with the help of 10 fours when he failed to beat the arm of Danny Briggs attempting a second run, while a Wood throw from backward point saw off Ryder as he called Bopara for a single with the total on 219.Ryder’s approach brought him four sixes amongst his 13 boundaries, while contributing 87 from just 61 deliveries. After that, wickets fell steadily as Essex tried to increase their tempo further. Among them was Bopara, whose 51 from 52 deliveries contained just three fours, until Wood took a fine catch at mid-on to provide Tomlinson with his solitary success. The last 10 overs of the innings produced only 56 runs for the home side at a cost of five wickets, all of which fell in the final eight overs.Wheater said: “It was disappointing to lose after coming so close and being well placed to win. But now we can focus on our four-day game in the hope of getting promotion.”

Sri Lanka leave Ireland bereft

Ireland cricket fans have enjoyed the team’s golden age of success, but they still take nothing for granted when they come to Clontarf. For 50 years they have been coming to watch Ireland at the Dublin club ground, and have yet to see them beat a full member. This was the 17th game since India first visited in 1967, and last year’s tie against Pakistan and a 1980 draw against West Indies are still their best results.Several times in recent years – especially early in the tepid Irish summer – William Porterfield’s team has been in dominant positions only to find victory slip away from them, and this game followed that almost inevitable path.Chasing 220 to beat Sri Lanka, the Irish batsmen found that the visitors’ high-class bowlers enjoyed the seaming conditions just as much as their own attack had, and despite a couple of battling innings they went down by 79 runs, extending the Sri Lankans’ winning run to ten ODIs.Ireland’s total of 140 was their lowest in an ODI on the ground. The Irish seamers are well versed in using the local conditions, and kept Ireland on top until some late hitting from Nuwan Kulasekara and Ajantha Mendis hoisted the total over the 200 mark, which looked distant with ten overs to go and the score on 139 for 6.The sky overhead provided its own narrative, with bright blue skies at the start giving over to a typically Dublin slate grey background, before the innings closed with angry clouds hovering as if a scene from Game of Thrones was about to be staged. Rain visited briefly, but not enough to drive the players from the battlefield.William Porterfield called correctly and had no hesitation in asking Angelo Mathews to bat, and within four balls had reason for satisfaction. With the ball wobbling around, a good shout for leg before from Tim Murtagh was followed by an acrobatic diving catch by Kevin O’Brien at second slip as the ball left Kusal Perera.Murtagh was almost unplayable as the Sri Lankans battled with the conditions to stay in the game. It took until the seventh over for the first boundary to be hit, and Lahiru Thirimanne was uncomfortable before Alex Cusack found his edge. Before the game, Porterfield had called for his bowlers to keep the pressure on, pointing to the need to take wickets throughout the innings and not just at the start. His bowlers responded to the call, all bar Max Sorensen contributing to the wickets column.O’Brien came up with another bit of gymnastic genius, this time off his own bowling, to dismiss Dinesh Chandimal just as he was looking dangerous. The Sri Lankan pushed an innocuous looking delivery wide of O’Brien, who dived wide to his left and clung on with one-hand. Next over Paul Stirling found Kithruwan Vithanage’s edge with his second ball of the day, which went straight to Ed Joyce at slip and left the visitors on 95 for 5.Ashan Priyanjan joined his captain to repair the innings but they were unable to find any fluency through the powerplay overs, which yielded just 20. Mathews was lucky to just clear Joyce at third man, but in the next over he pushed his luck once too often. Priyanjan tucked the ball around the corner and Mathews came half way down before being sent back. From fine leg, almost 40 metres away, Niall O’Brien threw the stumps down at the bowler’s end and the Irish fielders erupted.Kulasekara came in and smashed the only sixes of the day, sharing a sparkling stand with Mendis, but with Porterfield managing his bowling changes with skill, Murtagh returned to claim another scalp and finish with 2 for 21 off his ten overs. The Irish innings started in rain, but there were soon more than drops of water falling. Paul Stirling edged Kulasekera onto his stumps, before Ed Joyce’s deep purple patch ended when he wafted Suranga Lakmal to the keeper. At 5 for 2 Ireland’s reply was in trouble, but Niall O’Brien counter-attacked and passed 1,500 runs in ODIs with his second scoring shot.He and Porterfield played contrasting roles as they battled with the bowling. They had put on 58 – the only fifty stand of the day – when O’Brien nicked off. Clouds had gathered anew and D/L sheets were a’flapping when a flurry of wickets made them redundant.First Porterfield called Gary Wilson for a tight run which was rejected. Porterfield continued his run towards the pavilion before the umpires called him back as he had overtaken Wilson. Two overs later Kevin O’Brien horribly mistimed a pull of Lakmal off the first ball he faced, watching in disgust as it fell in slow-motion into the hands of Senanayake at mid-wicket. The next over saw Stuart Thompson all at sea to Mendis, only using his feet to keep the ball from hitting the stumps, said the umpire. That was 74 for 6 and all thoughts of that first win in Clontarf was gone. Porterfield battled on to make 37 off 87 balls and the tail clumped a few before Kulasekara was summoned to finish it off.Any concerns that Mendis’s fingers might seize up in the single digit temperatures were proved wrong with a man-of-the-match winning 10-1-26-3. The teams return to the same venue on Thursday with Ireland itching to level the series.

Afghanistan on brink of 'national celebration'

Afghanistan need just one more win in the World Cricket League (WCL) Championship to secure a first ever World Cup berth and write another heartwarming chapter in the nation’s cricketing story. Victory over Kenya, the team they crushed by eight wickets on Wednesday, will move them into second in the table and an automatic spot at the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.Afghanistan became an ICC Affiliate member in 2001, only receiving Associate status earlier this year. They narrowly missed out on reaching the 2011 World Cup, despite starting the qualification process in the bottom group, but have provided a colourful presence at the last two World Twenty20s.”It’s a big achievement for Afghanistan cricket and Afghanistan to qualify for the World Cup in 2015,” Mohammad Nabi, the team’s captain, said. “We’ve got one more game left and if we win on Friday, we will celebrate – the team will be celebrating and the whole nation will be celebrating that win.”Beating Kenya for the second time in three days would lift Afghanistan to 19 points, behind Ireland, who have already guaranteed their World Cup place. The match in Sharjah is the final fixture in the WCL Championship, which began more than two years ago. Should Afghanistan slip up, then UAE will be the beneficiaries, going through to the World Cup proper for the first time since 1996.Afghanistan will again rely on players such as bandana-wearing fast bowler Hamid Hassan, who took 4 for 19 on Wednesday, former captain Nawroz Mangal and fellow opener Mohammad Shahzad, purveyor of his own version of the “helicopter shot”.”Thanks to our nation and to our supporters who came here to support our team, as well as the players who played really well, our fast bowler Hamid Hassan and spin bowler Samiullah Shenwari,” Nabi said after the game. “We will now try even harder for our next game to play positively.”Should they progress, then fixtures against the hosts, Australia and New Zealand, as well as England, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Pool A will await. The six remaining teams in the WCL Championship will have another chance to get to the 2015 World Cup, via a one-off qualifying tournament, to be held in New Zealand early next year, taking on Hong Kong, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Uganda to determine the final two spots.

Essex sign Gambhir to aid promotion push

Essex have signed India batsman Gautam Gambhir for the remainder of the season as they look to bring success to a turbulent campaign.

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Aug-2013Essex have signed India batsman Gautam Gambhir for the remainder of the season as they look to bring success to a turbulent campaign.Embarrassed, booed off and publicly criticised by their head coach, Essex are remarkably in a position to make 2013 a year to remember. On Saturday they will take part in Friends Life t20 Finals Day and are handily-placed in both the Yorkshire Bank 40 and County Championship.Gambhir’s wealth of experience will replace the greener Hamish Rutherford, the New Zealand opener, who will be heading home to prepare for New Zealand’s domestic and international season. Gambhir is expected to join Essex ahead of their County Championship match against Northamptonshire in Colchester, which begins on August 20.That fixture is the first of Essex’s final six matches. Promotion is firmly in their sights; they currently lie 29 points off second-placed Northamptonshire and have a game in hand on every team in the division. That healthy position is somewhat inconceivable given Essex were bowled out for just 20 against Lancashire earlier in the season. They were also humbled by Middlesex in the Flt20, bowled out for 74 and booed off by their home fans, yet recovered to qualify for Finals Day with a superb 47-run victory at Nottinghamshire in the quarter-final. Qualification for the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Bank 40 is also a possibility; with two matches to play, Essex sit two points off the top of Group B.Gambhir’s 11,274 first-class runs and 8,815 List A runs could provide consistent performances at the top of the order, an absence of which has hindered Essex thorough the season.”We are delighted with the signing of Gautam Gambhir,” Essex head coach Paul Grayson said. “He is a player with pedigree, which has been showcased on the biggest stages. He will no doubt bring his experience to the squad during an important stage of the season for us.”Gambhir, who had been India’s first-choice opener in all forms of cricket over the past few seasons, was dropped from both Test and limited-overs teams earlier this year. He was left out of the squad for the home Tests against Australia and was also not included for the Champions Trophy and the tri-series in the West Indies. He has played 54 Tests and scored 4,021 runs at an average of 44.18.Gambhir is the first Indian player to sign for a county this season. In 2012, Harbhajan Singh represented Essex for the second half of the season.

No Botafogo, excelente.

Chegou a proposta e aceitei. E vou continuar assim.

Aminul assumes the BCB president’s role at a difficult time. There were several controversies during Faruque’s nine months as the board chief. On his first day in charge, Faruque questioned head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe’s position, before sacking him two months later. The BCB directors, in their letter to the sports ministry, said Faruque had ignored the BCB constitution, which expects the president to inform the board directors on decisions such as hiring or firing a coach.ESPNcricinfo has learned that Faruque’s handling of BPL 2025 was a key reason behind his losing his job. Bangladesh’s interim government head Dr Muhammad Yunus had taken a keen interest in the BPL, but the controversy surrounding the Durbar Rajshahi franchise marred the tournament. The government had to intervene when the Rajshahi owner failed to pay players on time, even ignoring to pay their hotel bills in Chattogram and Dhaka. It led to a player revolt.Faruque also clashed with an assistant of the sports adviser, and his fallout with board director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim also became public. Dr Yunus didn’t attend the BPL’s final match as planned, which many believed was viewed negatively by the sports adviser Asif Mahmud. The BCB has continued to be mired in controversy since. The Dhaka cricket clubs were angered when the BCB was in the process of amending its constitution, before questions began to emerge about certain Dhaka Premier League (DPL) matches. The situation came to a head after a stumping incident in the Shinepukur-Gulshan club match. The start of the investigation process was also criticised after the BCB’s head of anti-corruption asked the same players to enact the incident publicly at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on the following day.Last month, Faruque said in an interview on YouTube that he would contest the upcoming board elections. Some board directors told ESPNcricinfo that his focus on the upcoming elections alienated him from the other directors. In all, Faruque lasted nine months and eight days on the hot seat.
