Tim Southee in line to replace Anderson as England bowling coach

Former New Zealand seam bowler Tim Southee is being considered as England men’s bowling consultant, replacing James Anderson who had held the role since retiring from Test cricket in July. With Anderson proritising a season-long deal to play for Lancashire this summer, BBC Sport reported on Tuesday that Southee, who himself retired from international cricket after England’s tour of New Zealand at the end of 2024, is the frontrunner to fill that gap.Southee, 36, finished a distinguished 16-year international career as the Black Caps’ leading wicket-taker, and would reunite with his former captain and good friend Brendon McCullum should he join England’s backroom staff. The pair represented New Zealand together on 170 occasions – McCullum skippering for 78 of them – while also sharing the field at Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and Middlesex in the T20 Blast. McCullum even presented Southee with a bottle of red wine signed by the England team at the conclusion of Southee’s 107th and final Test in Hamilton.McCullum has long held the belief that Southee would make a good bowling coach. It helps, too, that Southee has a good relationship with many of the current squad, including Test captain Ben Stokes.Related

Ideally, England would have a bowling consultant in place for the summer to oversee both red-and white-ball formats. It would also be beneficial for the sake of continuity that the successful candidate continues through for the Ashes. Anderson, a veteran of five tours of Australia, could end up fulfilling that role if, for instance, Southee could not commit to the winter.England’s international season gets underway on May 22 with a one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, followed by a five-match series against India, which is sandwiched by limited-overs series against West Indies and South Africa. There is also a three-match T20I tour of Ireland in September.England are due to name their squad for the Zimbabwe Test on Friday. Given the spate of injuries, it is likely to feature a relatively inexperienced bowling group, including a maiden call-up for Essex seamer Sam Cook.Southee was already down to feature in the English summer through his £63,000 deal with Birmingham Phoenix in the men’s Hundred. Upon his retirement, he stated a desire to continue on the franchise circuit, and played the entirety of this year’s ILT20 tournament for Sharjah Warriors. As such, any prospective deal with the ECB will require him to park what remains of his playing career for the time being. That being said, there is no international clash with the Hundred; Phoenix’s season begins four days after the end of the final India Test at the Kia Oval, with the Hundred final two days before the one-day series with South Africa. And next year’s ILT20 begins five days after the scheduled final day of fifth Ashes Test in Sydney.Anderson, meanwhile, is still yet to make a County Championship appearance for Lancashire this summer as he continues to battle a calf injury. Having missed the opening month’s Division Two fixtures, he will also sit out this week’s match with Gloucestershire and perhaps the following round against Northamptonshire. A home meeting with Derbyshire on May 16 has been earmarked for a potential return to action.

Tom Hartley, Luke Wells dig deep to salvage Lancashire draw

Gloucestershire make all the running but are thwarted by seventh-wicket stand

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay05-May-2025Resolute batting by Lancashire’s Luke Wells and Tom Hartley frustrated Gloucestershire’s bowlers and helped ensure that the Rothesay County Championship match at Emirates Old Trafford ended in a draw. The visitors declared on their overnight score of 589 for eight, giving them a lead of 139, and when they reduced the home side to 160 for six half an hour before tea, they looked well placed to beat Lancashire for the first time since 2015.But Wells and Hartley shared an seventh-wicket partnership of 69 in 28 overs either side of tea and the game ended at 5.53pm when Lancashire were 255 for eight and had a lead of 116 with only eight overs left in the match.Hartley was caught by James Bracey off Ajeet Singh Dale for 37 but that wicket fell just before players shook hands with Tom Bailey on nine not out and Saqib Mahmood unbeaten on nought. For Gloucestershire, Tom Price ended the day with three for 52 and Graeme van Buuren took three for 36.Gloucestershire take 13 points from the game to Lancashire’s 12 but that hardly reflects the difference in the quality of the cricket played by the sides, particularly on the last two days of the game.Having declared this morning with a lead of 139, Gloucestershire were rewarded for their enterprise when they dismissed both Lancashire openers inside the first dozen overs of their side’s second innings.George Bell departed for 28 when his waft outside the off stump to a ball from Tom Price only edged a catch to Cameron Bancroft, the only slip. Two balls later, Keaton Jennings joined his opening partner in the pavilion when he was beaten by Singh Dale’s nip off the pitch and Bancroft took his second catch when fielding at a conventional second slip. That left Lancashire on 50 for two, still 89 runs in arrears, and things got worse for the home side 15 minutes before luncheon when a flighted ball from Graeme van Buuren tempted Marcus Harris out of his crease and Bracey completed the stumping.Lancashire were 89 for three when Harris departed for 24 but Josh Bohannon and Matty Hurst cleared Lancashire deficit and had built a mere four-run lead before both were dismissed by Tom Price and the game was tossed into the hazard once more.Hurst was the first to go when having made 33 in 72 minutes, he inside-edged a ball onto his leg stump; four overs later Bohannon pushed a little tentatively at a delivery that seemed to bounce more than he was expecting and was caught at slip by Bancroft for 30.Lancashire’s lead was only 13 when Bohannon was dismissed and it had been increased to only 21 when George Balderson was caught behind by Bracey off van Buuren for two.But Wells and Hartley took their side to tea on 178 for six and the eighth-wicket pair then inched Lancashire to safety on the resumption, extending their partnership to 69 before Wells was caught behind off van Buuren for 36.The result means that all three Championship games at Old Trafford this season have been drawn with the visiting team only batting once on each occasion.

Not Okafor or Stach: Farke's 9/10 hero looked like "Leeds' best player"

Heading into this away contest at Molineux, Leeds United had only managed to score one paltry goal all season long in the Premier League.

Obviously, only four games had been done and dusted at that point, which definitely gives some needed context to that worrying statistic, but it would have troubled Daniel Farke and Co. all the same.

Now, however, the Whites have shrugged off that monkey on their back in style with a first-half flurry of goals, going on to hand Leeds a mighty 3-1 win away at bottom of the table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin would kick off the goalscoring with an expertly put-away header, but it was the other goalscorers on the day in Anton Stach and Noah Okafor, that really stole the show, away from the former Everton man finally opening his Whites account.

Okafor & Stach's performances vs Wolves

The goal-shy number nine would, thankfully, set the tone for a spirited Leeds comeback, though, with a Jayden Bogle cross being gobbled up by the ex-Toffees marksman with just half an hour on the clock.

Leeds had plenty of time, therefore, to fight back from Ladislav Krejci’s early opener, and the fight back was complete when Stach showed off his class when hammering home a free-kick just nine minutes after the contest was levelled.

Away from bagging his first-ever Whites strike in some style, the former Hoffenheim star also showed off a battling edge during the rest of the clash, with the number 18 winning five ground duels to be a commanding presence centrally, as per Sofascore.

He also got in on the act again when teeing up Okafor for the game-clinching strike at 3-1, with the Swiss international played perfectly into space just moments after Stach beat Jose Sa to put the game beyond doubt, even for Leeds’ nervy standards.

On the stroke of half-time, the tricky number 19 would confidently place an effort past the busy Old Gold number one, with Okafor then going to successfully complete a wild six dribbles across the rest of the contest as a livewire presence on the right flank.

With three new signings all scoring, Farke will believe Leeds’ near future is bright, with another fresh purchase also standing out defensively to make Leeds’ widespread summer spending look even more worthwhile.

The 9/10 sensation who is Farke's "best player"

Leeds desperately needed this pick-me-up on their travels, having succumbed to a late defeat last time out on the road to Fulham by the cruellest of last-ditch goals.

Indeed, it was a Gabriel Gudmundsson own goal that would separate the two sides on the day. However, you couldn’t tell in the West Midlands that the Swede was entering into this away affair with this moment weighing heavily on his mind, with the number three one of Leeds’ best performers overall.

That was the glowing assessment given by journalist Beren Cross, anyway, who stated during the action-packed first-half that Gudmundsson was “Leeds’ best player” for both his defensive grit and his passing range, with the table above certainly backing up Cross’ compelling argument.

As noted above, the reinvigorated Scandinavian would see out the frantic affair with eight clearances registered on top of four duels being successfully won to snuff out many a Wolves foray forward in the second half.

But, the impressive left-footer also only misplaced seven of his 51 passes on the day, which was a better tally than Stach managed – who came in at 31 accurate passes – despite pulling the strings in the middle.

Gudmundsson’s compliments aren’t over here either, with Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth also hailing the 26-year-old’s showing as an ‘excellent all-round’ display, leading to a deserved 9/10 post-match rating coming his way.

While there were many smiles from ear to ear at full-time regarding both Okafor and Stach getting off the mark, the biggest grin of them all might well come from Gudmundsson’s display, after the horror show he endured at Craven Cottage.

"What I’m told about Raskin as a person" – Jackson shares insight on Rangers outcast

Rangers have had a torrid start to life under Russell Martin as they currently sit one place above the bottom of the table on four points. Their winless run in the Scottish Premiership has given way to many questions about Martin’s decisions and capabilities.

One of the biggest questions that Rangers fans have been asking surrounds the treatment of Nicolas Raskin. Last season, Raskin was one of Rangers’ standout players, contributing five goals and 11 assists from midfield. However, this year his appearances have been few and far between.

In the league, Raskin has only played 197 minutes, the 12th most in the squad, after playing the 5th most league minutes last season. Raskin has featured more prominently in the Scottish League Cup and in their failed push for Champions League qualification, but has been notably absent in the league, where they desperately need points.

With no clear answer from Martin as to why he is handling Raskin in this way, some have taken to speculation as to what may have led to Raskin falling out of favour. However, in a recent interview, Keith Jackson rubbished one of the rumours.

Jackson dispels Raskin leaks rumour

This weekend saw Raskin receive a rare start as he scored the opener in Rangers’ 2-0 win over Hibernian in the cup. Following the game, Keith Jackson spoke to Hotline Live about the Raskin/Martin situation: “And you’ve seen this rumour, and I don’t believe it for a second about Raskin leaking team news to the Brugge manager. That doesn’t fit with what I’m told about Raskin as a person.”

Part of what led to the speculation about Raskin leaking the team news is that, following the 6-0 defeat, he was absent from the entirety of the next two match days. However, with the result leading to Rangers missing out on Champions League qualification, and in turn millions of pounds that could have gone towards improving the team and the squad, it is almost certain his punishment would have been far more severe if the rumour was true.

A more likely reason for Raskin’s absence is a tactical decision from Martin. At points this season, Raskin has had to play out of position as Martin has utilised the Bournemouth loanee Max Aarons centrally. Jackson didn’t mince his words when he expressed his dissatisfaction with this strategy from Martin.

Raskin may be key to Martin's survival

Raskin’s performance after being left out in the cold has demonstrated he’s worthy of coming back into the first team. He’s popped up with two goals and an assist in all competitions this season, and Martin needs to get his team scoring if he wants to remain in the job.

The experimentation with Aarons drifting inside hasn’t been paying off, and adapting his style of play to incorporate the aspects of the team that worked under Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson may be the only way Martin can turn things around.

How Ryan Reynolds & Rob Mac changed the mindset of a Wrexham in record-shattering bid to reach the Premier League

Ryan Reynolds has explained how he and Rob Mac have changed the mindset of a football club and community in North Wales, with people now proud to say: “I’m from Wrexham.” That was not the case when two Hollywood stars completed a stunning takeover of then National League Red Dragons in 2021, with a record-shattering rise to prominence having been enjoyed since then.

  • From takeover to the Championship: Wrexham's meteoric rise

Few knew what to expect when it was announced that Reynolds and Mac were venturing into the world of sports co-ownership. Fears of a celebrity gimmick being played out were aired, especially when it was revealed that documentary cameras would be heading to the Racecourse Ground.

A remarkable success story has, however, been played out. ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ has opened up a window to the world, building a global fan base in the process, while progress on the field has delivered a historic run of three successive promotions – with the Red Dragons now flying high in the Championship.

They are one step away from reaching the Premier League, with Reynolds and Mac having provided considerable funding on and off the field while chasing that top-flight dream. They have been taken into the hearts of Wrexham natives, showing that A-list investment can be a positive when managed in the right way.

Reynolds proud of achievements at Wrexham

Reynolds is rightly proud of all that has been achieved, telling : "We are in the Championship league, one step from the Premier League, and honestly it’s wild. It’s two things about it that I think are really remarkable. The first thing and the most important is that people in Wrexham – you know, five years ago when we got there, they wouldn’t really even say Wrexham. If you said: ‘Where you from?’ They would say: ‘North Wales’. And now they say: ‘I’m from Wrexham (expletive).’ I love it! I’m just like, I love that.

"And so, yeah, the show Welcome to Wrexham is shooting its fifth season now. Wrexham the club, the football club, is in its 167th season. So, it’s one of the oldest football teams – third oldest in the world. It was promoted three times in a row, which is history. No-one’s ever done that in the sport, which is good and bad because, like, literally Rob and I are watching us get promoted and we’re like: ‘Well, we’re going to have to now rent our mouths out to oligarchs’.

"This is crazy. As we walked off the field, they literally started rolling the field up because a heated one needs to go down to play in that kind of league. So, it’s been transformative for the town in every way. It’s just imbued the town with a kind of positivity that wasn’t there. They lost coal and steel and all that sort of post-Thatcherism kind of sadness that was there, it’s gone and it’s like this vibrant community that is an amazing place to visit."

  • How Hollywood takeover of Wrexham came about

Wrexham have come a long way in a short space of time, with Mac’s wife – Kaitlin Olson – having previously told Lorraine of how the most unlikeliest of ventures came about. She said: "I mean, honestly, I thought it was amazing because this was during Covid and if you know my husband, you know, I mean, we were all on lockdown and we couldn’t work or do anything. You tell Rob he can’t do something, he’s like, ‘Yes I can’.

"So he just needed to come up with an idea of something that he could do. And he said, you know, I have this idea if I buy a football club and I take it to FX and then, you know, we make a television show out of it, the money that we get paid for the show, we could just put into the club. And it’s a win-win. And then he brought it up with Ryan, and he thought it was a great idea."

Wrexham fairytale: More drama for documentary series

That "idea" has become a fairytale adventure, with there no sign of Wrexham slowing down. Adjusting to life in the Championship has not been easy, with the odd question being asked of Phil Parkinson’s future as manager despite all that he has achieved, but they are just five points adrift of the play-off places through nine games as more drama is delivered for the club’s award-winning documentary.

Aston Villa star "feeling it" and has to block out "tricky" Villa Park atmosphere

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has challenged his side to back up their first win of the season with consistency after a 1-0 Europa League victory over Bologna.

Villa scored their first goal at home this season after 12 minutes when John McGinn fired into the bottom right corner from outside the area. Ollie Watkins had a second-half penalty saved by Lukasz Skorupski as he failed to open his account for the campaign.

Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot was busy in the second half as Bologna piled on the pressure and he scrambled across his goal to keep out Martin Vitik’s header in stoppage time to ensure the hosts clung on to all three points. Emery says his side now have something to build on heading into Sunday’s Premier League match with Fulham.

He told TNT Sports: “At home I felt always here, in three years since I arrived, strong and confident. Creating and building a great atmosphere with energy with the players and supporters and today I felt it again.

“Bologna played well, they demanded us a lot, but then we adapted and tried to dominate and I think we deserved the win. Today we won and it is important we have to try and keep consistent on Sunday. Different match and rival, but a lot of things tactically we have to keep on building.

“Today this win will help us to try and continue working and being positive, but each match coming is a challenge, to fight to try and prepare as best as possible, be demanding with the players. This year I am excited, positive and motivated about the Europa League, but I know how difficult it is to win.”

Watkins struggles again as Villa Park gets tense

Watkins came off the bench in the 58th minute and looked lively, but his goal drought extended to seven games with the penalty miss. Emery is confident the forward will return to form, though. He added: “He worked today like he is (confident) and this is the first step to recover confidence.

“Then he had a penalty and he created chances as well, but the most important is to recover confidence and do your tasks like he did today. Today was the first step and he did fantastic.”

Defender Ezri Konsa admits the Villa Park crowd have been “tricky” to deal with following a tough start to the season but wants to use Thursday’s win as a starting point for their season. He said:

Crystal Palace now looking to sign £25m CB as ready-made Guehi replacement

Crystal Palace are now looking to sign a £25m centre-back, who is viewed as a ready-made replacement for Marc Guehi, with the captain still expected to sign for Liverpool.

Guehi left fuming after deadline day Liverpool move falls through

Guehi was expected to complete a move to Anfield on deadline day, but the deal fell through, as Palace were unable to bring a suitable replacement through the door in the summer, despite tabling a club-record £37m bid for Inter Milan’s Yann Bisseck.

It has since emerged that the Englishman has been left fuming with the move not going through, despite doing everything right by continuing to honour his contract and play for the Eagles amid widespread speculation over his future.

With less than one year remaining on his contract, the 25-year-old is now poised to leave the South London club on a free, which will be a difficult pill for Steve Parish to swallow, given that he was valued at £60m not too long ago.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Guehi is still edging towards a move to Liverpool, which means Crystal Palace have now set their sights on Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, who is viewed as a ready-made replacement for the centre-back.

It is deemed ‘inevitable’ that Disasi will leave the Blues during the January transfer window, given that he is not a part of Enzo Maresca’s plans, and a move to Selhurst Park could now be on the cards.

The Eagles are thought to be looking to sign the 27-year-old on loan, with previous reports stating Chelsea value the defender at around £25m.

How Disasi compares to Guehi stylistically

The Frenchman could be an improvement on Guehi in some departments, given that he appears to be more comfortable in possession of the ball, although the England international has outperformed the Chelsea man across some key defensive metrics over the past year.

That said, while the former AS Monaco man has been lauded as “incredible” in the past, it does not bode well that he is a part of the Chelsea ‘bomb squad’, while he is also thought to have turned down a late move to Selhurst Park.

Theoretically, another four months without playing any football may change his mind, but it remains to be seen whether Disasi is even interested in a move to Selhurst Park this January.
