Dortmund signed Silva in a €20m (£17m/$23m) deal from Premier League side Wolves at the end of the summer window. The Portuguese striker was set to make his debut in Dortmund's win over Union Berlin but complications arose as the club found out about the severity of his injury. The 23-year-old has now been ruled out for four weeks with adductor problem, which the club was reportedly unaware of before signing him.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Silva was signed by Wolves from Porto in 2020 but was not able to make much impression under then manager Gary O'Neil and was sent out on loan to Anderlecht, PSV, Rangers and Las Palmas before his permanent switch to Germany. The Bundesliga club signed him as backup for Serhou Guirassy but this transition will now take time as Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl claims the club are unaware of his return date.

  • WHAT KEHL SAID

Kehl on Silva's injury crisis said: "Fabio suffered a muscle injury in the summer and is still recovering. Therefore, he and we will use the international break to get him fit enough to help us. We'll have to see how long it takes."

    WHAT NEXT FOR DORTMUND?

According to Silva could be out for a month with the injury, meaning coach Niko Kovac will have to rely on his "life-insurance", Guirassy, and youngster Maximilian Beier to lead the attack. Dortmund are set to Heidenheim next in the league before they face Juventus in their Champions League opening fixture on September 17.

Biel, o melhor do time, criou duas ótimas situações.

Royal Challengers discover a bowling attack

And in Tim Southee, they may have also found a solution for the end-overs issues that plagued them through the first half of the season

Shashank Kishore in Bengaluru02-May-20181:27

We were adaptable with our bowling – Southee

“” (This time the cup is ours) is a popular slogan Royal Challengers Bangalore have adopted from Bengaluru Football Club (BFC), their next door neighbours. BFC proudly wore the tag during a stunning debut season in the Indian Super League, which ended in a heartbreaking loss in the final. The slogan has resonated across the city, so much that even AB de Villiers’ son and wife were proudly saying it loud to their autorickshaw driver in Kannada. If RCB are now looking for a new one for the second half of the season, “we can defend totals” won’t be a bad place to start. For five successive games at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, going back to the previous season, they had failed to do so. Two nights ago, Virat Kohli went to the extent of calling his team’s bowling “not good enough” and “shocking” after seeing a defence of 175 go cold against Kolkata Knight Riders. Last week, he called the bowling “criminal” as MS Dhoni’s brutal ball-striking took Chennai Super Kings home with four balls to spare in a chase of 206, after needing 71 off the last five overs. Now, against Mumbai Indians, a win was non-negotiable if RCB had to keep their playoff ambitions burning, and Kohli, surprisingly, was at his calmest. At the halfway mark, a sense of calm emanated from his team even as Mitchell McClenaghan sat on his haunches, having conceded 24 off the final over, of which Colin de Grandhomme, his New Zealand team-mate, had smacked 21.At the dugout, two other Kiwis, Brendon McCullum and head coach Daniel Vettori, exchanged fist bumps even as another, their former team-mate and current Mumbai bowling coach Shane Bond, scribbled furiously into his notepad. RCB had put up 167, which Bond later said was “15 above par.”Where Mumbai’s quicks tried to change pace and hit hard lengths, Tim Southee went full. This length allowed him to swerve one back in to clean bowl Ishan Kishan in the first over. It was up to Umesh Yadav to keep up his side of the bargain. For the third time this season, he struck off consecutive balls in the Powerplay, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma with good-length deliveries that cut back in sharply. As was the case on Sunday, there was grip and turn off the surface. Yuzvendra Chahal turned it square and bowled out by the 13th over with figures of 4-0-23-0. Umesh was done by the 15th, with 2 for 29.The game wasn’t yet in RCB’s bag, since the offspinner Washington Sundar, who had replaced M Ashwin, had endured an off day, conceding 15 in his first over. Where a bit of air and revs could have helped him extract turn off the surface, he had bowled flat, into Hardik Pandya’s hitting arc.ESPNcricinfo LtdWith Kohli not trusting Sundar with another over, he finally turned to de Grandhomme, who hadn’t bowled a ball in his first two matches of the season – with Corey Anderson trusted at the death ahead of him – and in this game had batted behind Southee. Given de Grandhomme’s international form and T20 record, those moves – especially the latter – might have puzzled Anderson and Southee, his New Zealand team-mates, as much as anyone.Having earlier shown what he could do with the bat, de Grandhomme now conceded only 11 off his first two overs, somewhat making up for a third over, the 16th, that went for 17. The game was now in the balance, with Mumbai needing 45 off four overs with Hardik on 40 off 33 and his brother Krunal on 16 off 10.Kohli had solved one problem, but now had another. Bowling out Umesh by the 15th over meant he had look Mohammed Siraj’s way despite him going at an economy rate of 9.44 in his five games so far. His death bowling may have raised questions over his utility, but he sent down a reasonable 17th, conceding only 10 to set it up for Southee, who was to bowl the 18th and the 20th over. The equation was within the reach of the Pandya brothers, but Southee made it 30 off 12 with an outstanding 18th over, mixing up slower offcutters and two searing full ones, in or around the blockhole. The pressure told on Krunal, who fell trying a scoop over short fine-leg off Siraj in the next over, and RCB could breathe a little easier. Defending 25 off the last over, Southee dismissed Hardik first ball, caught at long-off, and closed out the game with dots off his third, fourth and fifth balls. For the first time, a bowling attack that Kohli had referred to as RCB’s “best ever” before the season had delivered. It was also perhaps the first time this season that Kohli wasn’t constantly in his bowlers’ ears at all times. It was also the first time this season that bowling coach Ashish Nehra sported his trademark wide grin in the dugout. It might be too early for their fans to chant “”, but RCB’s fate was still in their hands.

Who should replace Smith and Warner for their IPL franchises?

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Mar-2018With Steven Smith and David Warner ruled out of the IPL, their franchises – Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad – have considerable voids to fill in their overseas contingent. As per the IPL’s rules, they can pick from the unsold player pool from the auction, which leaves them with a number of big names to choose from. While Hashim Amla, one of the surprise names on the unsold list, has already committed to playing county cricket for Hampshire, a number of others could eagerly be looking forward to a call from these two sides. Who would you call in to replace Smith and Warner? Use the swiper below to poll in.

Lanning: Harris has added 'another dimension' to Australia's T20 batting line-up

Grace Harris has been praised for having added “another dimension” to Australia’s T20I batting line-up since returning to the side last year as she shapes up as a key figure in the upcoming T20 World Cup.Harris, who made her international debut in 2015, was recalled for the T20 leg of the Ashes last January, but through a combination of rain and the dominance of Australia’s top order did not get to the middle until the opening Commonwealth Games match against India in late July.Related

  • Wareham returns for Australia's T20 World Cup campaign

She proceeded to make a game-changing 37 off 20 balls after walking in at 49 for 5 with Australia needing 155 and facing the prospect of defeat. Harris followed that with scores of 41, 27 not out and an unbeaten 64 off 35 balls in India. That last innings came in a rollicking stand of 129 in 10.2 overs alongside Ashleigh Gardner with the duo providing tremendous power to a formidable batting line-up.”Grace Harris, in particular, has come into our side and added another dimension to our batting line-up,” captain Meg Lanning said ahead of the first T20I against Pakistan in Sydney. “She can go from ball one and regardless of when she comes in she is able to put the pressure back on the opposition. To pair her up with Ash Gardner, we feel like it sort of takes pressure off Ash in a way, it’s not just reliant on her to come in and accelerate. To be fair, all our batters have been working on that.”Lanning will return to the T20I side on Tuesday, having missed the India tour while taking a break from the game. She is set to open against Pakistan alongside the prolific Beth Mooney, while Alyssa Healy continues her recovery from a calf strain.Healy is on track to be available for the World Cup in South Africa where she will slot back in at the top of the order of what will shape as a fearsome batting line-up.”[The Pakistan series] provides opportunities to people to come in and play a slightly different role… there are plenty of options, sometimes that make it a little more tricky,” Lanning said. “It’s going to be very difficult to make a decision on the final XI in every game. A lot of it will come down to match-ups and who we are coming up against.”

Ellyse Perry will play a ‘pivotal role’ at the World Cup

That batting order can expect to include Ellyse Perry, who has rejuvenated her T20 game over the last six months. Against India, Perry struck at 160.19 in her three innings, bringing a new gear to her role in the middle order after having come under scrutiny in recent seasons amid the plethora of batting talent developing in the Australian game.”Over in India, she came out and played in a different way to what she has in the past,” Lanning said. “That game has always been there for her, but now she is confident to come out and dominate attacks, she can hit the ball as hard as anyone in world cricket.”To see her do that over in India was great, and I think she will play a pivotal role for us moving through these T20s and in the World Cup as well. She can really dominate against spin in particular, so I’m excited to see what sort of a role she can play for us.”Legspinner Georgia Wareham is also making an international comeback after 18 months out with an ACL injury. She only returned to the WNCL this month but was named in the World Cup squad straightaway with Lanning saying she and fellow legspinner Alana King could feature in the same XI.”It’s so good to see Wolfie [Wareham] back, she’s had a tough road over the last 18 months but she’s a very important part of our team,” Lanning said. “She brings a lot on the field in terms of every facet of the game.”

Gujarat Giants will return to the DY Patil Stadium a day after the big defeat they suffered at the hands of Mumbai Indians, hoping for a turn of fortunes when they take on UP Warriorz, who will be playing their first game of the Women’s Premier League. But unfortunately for Giants, the problems extend beyond the pitch.Giants replaced West Indies’ Deandra Dottin with Australia’s Kim Garth in the days leading up to the WPL. The team said Dottin was “recovering from a medical situation” but she took to social media to suggest that she is fine. Sri Lanka train at picturesque Radella Cricket Ground in latest facility in the country

Ahead of New Zealand tour, the high altitude and cold weather, and the pace, bounce and movement, offered conditions they are likely to face there

Madushka Balasuriya23-Feb-2023Sri Lanka’s cricketers and coaching staff provided a glowing endorsement of the country’s latest training facility in Radella, Nuwara Eliya, following a week-long training camp at the newly renovated ground.Located some 4000 feet above sea level, the Radella Cricket Ground – home to Dimbula Athletic & Cricket Club – is among the most picturesque in the world; its immediate surroundings comprise the trademark greenery and mountainscapes of Sri Lanka’s hills, with waterfalls and tea estates aplenty, ready to greet those who venture further out.But more than the scenery, it was the conditions at the ground which most pleased those in attendance. Ahead of the team’s departure to New Zealand – where they will compete in two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is – the combination of high altitude and cold weather, along with the pace, bounce and movement present at Radella, offered the players as close a facsimile to the conditions they are likely to face in the coming month.Related

“The wickets we’ve been playing on have been excellent,” Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood said on the sidelines of the training camp. “Decent pace, good bounce, little bit of movement, and obviously the climate has suited us as well as training at high altitude; very similar to what we may face in New Zealand.”The renovation work has been headed by Godrey Dabrera, Sri Lanka Cricket’s manager of international venues and facilities. Having started on the work towards the end of last year, Dabrera headed a 20-member team in relaying four centre-turf wickets as well as installing five practice wickets, all of which was completed in a span eight weeks.”The work that Godfrey and the team have done here has been absolutely fantastic, to get this place up and running, to give us the conditions and the facilities we have here,” Silverwood said. “They’ve done a great job in such a short period of time as well.”Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne echoed his coach’s thoughts, and was particularly pleased at his bowlers being afforded extra time to get used to colder climes.”I think the bowlers benefitted quite a bit. For the fast bowlers, it’s not like bowling in warm conditions; bowling in colder conditions is a little harder,” Karunaratne said. “Even for the spinners, gripping the ball can be difficult in a colder climate. So things like that were very useful. We also have a lot of young players in the squad who haven’t played in New Zealand, so this was a very useful experience.”Sri Lanka completed their training camp on Thursday, and will now head back to Colombo to continue their preparations. The tour of New Zealand begins with the first Test from March 9 in Christchurch.

An independent regulatory commission found that London City's managing director, Sarah Batters, sent a player a private social media message during last summer's transfer window which read: "Hiya – just so you know, we’ve made the approach and have spoken to [redacted name] and they are open to sell…There’s the question of the fee, but what would your salary expectations be? Obviously I would love to make this happen!!"

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

This, however, came three hours before Southampton responded to an email from London City. In that, the now-promoted side explained that they would not be able to pay the release clause in the player's contract. In their response, the Saints said that they would not "be engaging in conversations with you regarding a transfer", adding: "We have received interest from a number of clubs and some are prepared to meet the release fee." The hearing, which took place in March, also heard that Batters contacted the player through social media in July for details for her agent.

DID YOU KNOW?

The regulatory commission noted that London City, who admitted to the charge, had apologised and co-operated with the disciplinary process and, learning that the club said it had been prepared to pay £150,000 ($201,500) to sign the player, calculated a fine of £15,000 ($20,150).

Krunal's all-round display helps LSG brush Sunrisers aside

Mishra and Bishnoi also played their part in strangling Sunrisers on a slow, low Ekana surface

On a slow, low and dying black-soil surface at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow Super Giants’ spinners starved Sunrisers Hyderabad of runs to set up a five-wicket win. After winning the toss, Aiden Markram opted to bat but his side could post only 121 for 8. Super Giants were without Mark Wood (flu) and Avesh Khan (injured) but Krunal Pandya, Ravi Bishnoi and Amit Mishra ensured their absence wasn’t felt. The trio picked up 6 for 57 in their combined 12 overs, with Krunal inflicting the most damage with the wickets of Mayank Agarwal, Anmolpreet Singh and Markram.KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers kicked off the chase by adding 35 in 4.3 overs. Mayers and Deepak Hooda fell in back-to-back overs but Krunal hit a 23-ball 34 to kill the game. When Nicholas Pooran hit the winning six, Super Giants still had four overs left.KL Rahul top-scored for Super Giants with 35•BCCI

Impact Player strategySunrisers started with three overseas players – Markram, Harry Brook and Adil Rashid – giving themselves the option to use either Heinrich Klaasen in case of a collapse, or one of Marco Jansen or Fazalhaq Farooqi to beef up their bowling in the second half. At 55 for 4 after nine overs, it looked like they would have to bring in Klaasen. He was padded up in the dugout but Sunrisers didn’t lose another wicket until the 18th over. Eventually, Farooqi replaced Rahul Tripathi at the start of the chase.Super Giants followed a more straightforward route, swapping Mishra with Ayush Badoni after the 19th over of the first innings.Krunal’s three-for dents SunrisersJust after two overs of seam, it was clear that this pitch was tailormade for spinners. Rahul duly brought Krunal on in the third over, and the left-arm spinner had Mayank Agarwal chipping one to extra-cover. Anmolpreet Singh and Rahul Tripathi took some time to get used to the slowness of the surface, and then hit four fours in eight balls to take the side to 43 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.Krunal, though, dragged them back by dismissing Anmolpreet and Markram off successive balls. Anmolpreet was trapped lbw by a quicker one and Markram done in by turn. Playing his first game of the season, Markram looked to drive a full ball only to get beaten and have his off stump uprooted. In the next over, the ninth of the innings, Bishnoi set Brook up nicely. After bowling two googlies, he anticipated Brook’s advance down the track and slipped in a wide legbreak. Brook did exactly what the bowler anticipated, ended up nowhere near the pitch of the ball, and was stumped by some distance.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Sunrisers struggle to break awayWhile Tripathi and Washington Sundar ensured Sunrisers didn’t lose another wicket for the next seven overs, the scoreboard moved at a glacial pace – just two boundaries came from overs 7 to 16. Tripathi tried to ramp Yash Thakur in the 18th over but failed to clear Mishra, who dived full-length to his left at short third to take the catch. Mishra picked up two himself in the next over, tossing the ball up to Washington and Rashid and having them caught down the ground. Only Abdul Samad’s unbeaten 21 off 10, which included two sixes off Jaydev Unadkat in the 20th over, took Sunrisers past a run a ball.Rahul, Krunal boss the chaseWith Quinton de Kock available, there was some intrigue over whether he or Mayers would open the innings alongside Rahul. But Super Giants stuck with the same batting line-up, leaving de Kock out to the surprise of many. And even if Mayers couldn’t repeat his heroics of the previous two games, he and Rahul gave the side a breezy start.Farooqi had Mayers pulling one straight to deep square leg in the fifth over, and from the other end, Bhuvneshwar Kumar took a low, one-handed return catch to his left to send Hooda back. But Super Giants had the advantage of knowing their target.Krunal joined Rahul at the end of the powerplay, and without taking much risk, the pair picked up a boundary in each of the next five overs. Krunal was the aggressor during the third-wicket stand of 55 in 6.2 overs, scoring at a strike rate of 147.82. Super Giants reached 100 in the 13th over before Krunal nicked Umran Malik behind. Rashid then had Rahul and Romario Shepherd lbw off successive deliveries, but the result was a formality by then.
