Olly Hannon-Dalby yet again carried Warwickshire’s bowling attack as Northamptonshire gritted their way to 200 for 5 on a weather-affected opening day of their LV=Insurance County Championship match at Edgbaston. The visitors, put in, advanced smoothly to 171 for 2 as Emilio Gay, with 77 from 146 balls, and debutant Karun Nair (78 off 177) added 147 in 46 overs. But Hannon-Dalby powered his side back into the game after tea with bowling of sustained accuracy and menace. His 19-7-29-3 on a placid pitch was worth many a five-for harvested in more helpful conditions. The seamer’s excellence also nudged Northamptonshire towards Division Two in a match they desperately need to win to preserve their slender hopes of avoiding relegation. After choosing to bowl, Warwickshire made the anticipated early breakthroughs as both openers fell in the first 61 balls. With Ricardo Vasconcelos ruled out injured, Hassan Azad opened with Gay but perished in careless fashion in the second over when he lifted Chris Rushworth to cover. When Luke Procter edged Hannon-Dalby to second slip, Northamptonshire were 24 for 2. Warwickshire, themselves in desperate need of a lift after a wretched few weeks, hoped that a clatter would follow but Nair and Gay rebuilt patiently.Nair, recruited for the last three games to replace the departed Sam Whiteman, underlined his commitment to the cause by taking 23 balls to get off the mark. With Gay batting in composed fashion, the third-wicket pair added 100 before gathering drizzle, low cloud and bad light forced the players off for two hours.Led by the indefatigable Hannon-Dalby, Warwickshire fought back in the last session as the visitors’ batting fragility showed itself. The Yorkshireman shaped a perfect away-cutter which took Gay’s edge through to wicketkeeper Michael Burgess and had Richard Keogh dropped on nought in the slips then bowled him through a big drive.Ed Barnard added the big wicket of Nair, who had become becalmed for 13 balls on 78, when his concentration at last wavered and he feathered an attempted loft to third man. Saif Zaib and Lewis McManus avoided further damage but Northamptonshire’s lower order needs to shine with bat and ball tomorrow if their side’s cadaverous survival bid is not to expire completely.
Premier League football is right around the corner. For Liverpool, the Merseyside derby is coming up.
It’s been a while since Liverpool played football, having missed last weekend’s action due to an early FA Cup exit, sitting out the week before due to the latest international escapades.
Diogo Jota is substituted off for Liverpool
As Liverpool eye a return to winning ways, ready to defend their imperious lead at the top of the Premier League and end Everton’s seven-game unbeaten run under David Moyes, they will cast a rueful eye over to Tyneside, where Newcastle United’s own absence of action last weekend was tempered and then some by a city’s jubiliant celebration.
Newcastle celebrated long into the night, having won the Carabao Cup at Wembley two weeks ago. Liverpool were bested in the final, and soundly at that.
One of the most glaring points of difference came up top, with Alexander Isak deadly and dynamic, Liverpool’s crop withered and weary.
The latest on Liverpool's interest in Isak
It’s hardly a surprise that Liverpool have a vested interest in Newcastle’s star striker. Earlier this month, golden source David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed the Reds’ intrigue is genuine, albeit with the caveat that Arsenal are also keen.
Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their second goal
The Magpies, however, are not keen, not keen at all. They rather like Isak, who has been described as “the best striker in the Premier League” by Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher. This season, the Swede has fired in 23 goals from 33 matches in all competitions, the latest of which came against Arne Slot’s side.
The 25-year-old is a searing goalscorer, but he’s also a top athlete, with power and pace to marry into an attacking intelligence which differentiates him from other high-level scorers.
Now, this is all great stuff, but Newcastle are very much aware of their talisman’s brilliance. In fact, in an effort to dissuade suitors, they have listed him at a figure in excess of £150m this summer, which would make him the Premier League’s most expensive player in history, were Liverpool to meet such terms.
What Liverpool need is an alternative option, someone brim-full with quality but more affordable. A contingency, yes, but one who could bloom into a superstar, as is Liverpool’s way.
FSG's Isak alternative
As per Caught Offside, Liverpool are among the teams chasing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, who has enjoyed a terrific season and is valued at around €80m (£67m).
Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike.
Ekitike, 22, left Paris Saint-Germain for Frankfurt on a permanent deal last year, having first arrived as a loanee in 2023.
His progress since has attracted a wealth of suitors, with near every high-profile Premier League club keen on a deal.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
Frankfurt hope to retain their striker’s services until next summer, but with so many teams curious, the Bundesliga club might just be willing to sell if a team such as Liverpool were to lodge a suitable offer.
Notably described as “the next Kylian Mbappe” by journalist Graeme Bailey, would the Frenchman be a good signing?
What Ekitike would bring to Liverpool
Three years ago, talent scout Jacek Kulig noted that Ekitike was a youngster with “enormous potential,” something that has been realised with the well-made decision to leave the French capital and make his name elsewhere.
Frankfurt are a top team in their own right, but Luis Enrique’s outfit are chock-full of interesting forwards and Ekitike would have been forced into a walk-on part, feeding off scraps.
His initial loan stint at Frankfurt bred decent results, but nothing more. 14 Bundesliga appearances (including seven starts) saw him chalk up four goals and two assists. Interestingly, each strike came across the final two months of the campaign, convincing Die Adler to pay up and claim his signature for good.
Let’s dig into that further. As per FBref, The France U21 international ranks among the top 6% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 9% for progressive carries, the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 5% for interceptions per 90.
Ekitike, like Isak (and Nunez for that matter), is more than just a goalscorer, with a silky and sharp all-round game that would see him dovetail into Slot’s system. He’s not put in a bad haul in front of goal this year either, scoring 19 goals and providing eight assists across 39 matches.
Data analyst Ben Mattinson has even gone as far as to dub Ekitike as “one of the best strikers out there” following his successful season.
Darwin Nunez warming up for Liverpool
However, the similarities with Nunez don’t end there. Ekitike is a terrific talent, versatile and multi-dimensionally skilled. However, WhoScored record that he is underperforming his xG (expected goals) by 5.29, which is the biggest underperformance across the whole of the German top flight this term.
What does this actually mean? Well, Ekitike is effectively finding space with pleasing regularity, only failing to finish his chances with the incisiveness that Liverpool have also lacked in part this season. The Frankfurt striker has averaged 3.6 shots per league game, as per Sofascore, scoring 13 goals from 26 matches.

Even Nunez is marginally overperforming in front of goal this season, and he’s a notoriously shaky finisher. However, it’s worth noting that under Jurgen Klopp’s wing, the Uruguay international scored 20 times across his first two Premier League seasons, racking up an xG total of 28.55, also missing 47 big chances.
Do Liverpool really want to repeat this with a player like Ekitike? England’s top division is known for its high intensity and prevalence of tough opponents, right down to the bottom of the table.
Nunez’s time at Anfield is almost up; after three seasons, the 25-year-old has failed to kick on and is among the most likely first-teamers to be sold this summer. In January, Liverpool fended off bids from the Saudi Pro League’s Al-Nassr.
Darwin Nunez applauds Liverpool fans
Liverpool and Slot need a fearsome goalscorer to mete out punishment on opposing defences. Isak could be that man. If he’s not, though, Ekitike may not be the best option to pick from.
He’s not been doing it long enough, hasn’t proved he’s clinical enough, to warrant a transfer fee that would deplete Liverpool’s summer resources.
Big months ahead for sporting director Richard Hughes and co.

Cricket South Africa also announces a six-team professional domestic system for women

CSA has announced equal international-match fees for their men and women’s players, joining New Zealand and India in establishing parity across genders. The landmark announcement comes on the same day that CSA unveiled a six-team professional domestic system for women cricketers, as part of the legacy projects following the successful hosting of the Women’s T20 World Cup in February. The new match fees will be in place from next month, when South Africa’s women’s team tours Pakistan. The new domestic structure takes its framework from the existing 16-team, two-tier set-up, which is divided into a top six and a bottom ten, with the latter being split into two groups of five each with a promotion-relegation system in place. The same set-up will continue, but the top-six teams will now have the resources to contract 11 players – up from six in previous years – at pay rates that are on par with the highest-paid male cricketers in Division 2, and will be able to employ a full-time coaching staff. CSA will subsidise four backroom-staff positions for each of the six sides, and require two of them to be female. The top six teams will compete in a 50-over and a 20-over competition, with the shortest-format matches likely to be played on the same days as the men’s competition to increase visibility. Cricket becomes the first team sport in South Africa to professionalise the women’s game at domestic level, thus earning the praise of the country’s sports minister Zizi Kodwa.Related

“What we are celebrating today is not about monetary value but about leadership and political will,” Kodwa said at the unveiling of the six teams in Pretoria. “In the first week of our appointment, we met with the top five [sports] federations in the country, and we stressed this point. You seem to be the only federation who understood what we said. How I wish others are listening as we speak now.”For the 2023-24 season, the top six teams will be Titans, Lions, Dolphins, Western Province, Free State and Garden Route Badgers. Four of the six – Titans, Lions, Dolphins and Western Province – also have men’s teams in South Africa’s domestic first division, while both Free State and Garden Route Badgers are top tier women’s teams only. For Free State, who are based in Bloemfontein, this is particularly significant. They occupy an important geographic area in the country’s central region, and have faded into the cricketing periphery in recent years with no team in the men’s top division and no SA20 franchise in their area. Garden Route Badgers are located in Oudtshoorn, an inland town in the Western Cape known for ostrich farming, and are exploring the possibility of moving to a stadium in the coastal town of George. While the top six teams will receive most of the benefits of the new initiative, teams in the bottom ten will also see changes – most notably the increase in fixtures. In previous seasons, those teams competed only against the four other teams in their group; but from this season, they will also play cross-pool matches. CSA is still finalising the logistics of this but it is likely to take a tournament-style approach, with teams based at one venue for a few weeks.Players from both divisions will also be exposed to elite-level international coaching and talent. This season, CSA is planning camps for women’s teams with SA20 sides; next season, the board hopes to have women’s exhibition matches in the SA20, and the season after that, it is aiming for a women’s T20 franchise league. This expansion in the women’s game is estimated to cost CSA R40 million (approx. US$2.1 million) over three years, but it has received some support from the government to cover the costs. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has pledged R15 million (US$800,000) to CSA for the same period.

WHAT HAPPENED?
With just a day to go before facing Pachuca in their second match of the Club World Cup, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Kylian Mbappé will miss the game. The French forward, who has been sidelined with acute gastroenteritis, will not travel with the team to Charlotte for Sunday’s clash.
Mbappé was hospitalized in the lead-up to Madrid’s tournament opener and has yet to play a single minute in the competition. There are even reports suggesting he may not feature at all until the knockout stage – if Madrid makes it that far.

Their lone specialist spinner then struggled in the evening once dew set in, leaking 53 runs in his eight overs while going wicketless.Australia did find some momentary breathing space when Warner and Smith forged a 69-run partnership for the second wicket after Mitchell Marsh had fallen for a duck. Hardik Pandya offered both batters drive balls, but the pressure was relentless from India’s spinners. Jadeja was a popgun firing darts on a good length around off stump. Kuldeep, too, attacked the stumps with his stock balls and wrong’uns. Ashwin let rip his carrom ball and reverse carrom ball, raising puffs of dust from the surface.Read the full analysis from Deivarayan MuthuMust Watch: Tom Moody on Australia’s struggle against spin2>1:19

Kumble: Netherlands need to show restraint and build pressure to challenge NZ
As New Zealand now move to Hyderabad for match No. 2 of their World Cup campaign to face Netherlands, they will still be without Kane Williamson, but Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee are likely to be fit and available according to head coach Gary Stead. Williamson, meanwhile, is targeting a return in New Zealand’s third game against Bangladesh. If numbers are anything to go by, New Zealand definitely have the upper hand going into the clash. They have met Netherlands four times in ODIs, winning on all four occasions – three of those games by a margin of 100-plus runs. The most recent ODI series between the two teams in 2022 went New Zealand’s way by a 3-0 margin.Full previewTeam newsNew Zealand (possible XI): 1 Devon Conway, 2 Will Young, 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Daryl Mitchell, 5 Tom Latham (capt, wk), 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mark Chapman, 8 Tim Southee/Lockie Ferguson, 9 Mitchell Santner, 10 Matt Henry, 11 Trent BoultNetherlands (possible XI): 1 Vikramjit Singh, 2 Max O’Dowd, 3 Colin Ackermann, 4 Scott Edwards (capt, wk), 5 Bas de Leede, 6 Teja Nidamanuru, 7 Saqib Zulfiqar, 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Aryan Dutt, 10 Paul van Meekeren, 11 Ryan KleinFeature: Ian Chappell outlines how the World Cup will be wonIndia will start as favourites, with the most versatile squad in the competition, but they also play in home conditions.
