Arsenal now working to beat Liverpool to £10m maestro as well as Zubimendi

Arsenal are now set to battle Liverpool for the signature of a “devastating” midfielder, who could join alongside Martin Zubimendi this summer, according to a report.

Zubimendi agrees broad personal terms

Reliable reporter Ben Jacobs has recently dropped a new update on Zubimendi’s potential move to the Emirates Stadium, asserting that while the deal is far from complete, a broad agreement has now been reached on personal terms.

Jacobs said: “Despite suggestions that Zubimendi has agreed full personal terms, including a reported four-year contract, my understanding is that only verbally and informally has Zubimendi agreed a broad personal term agreement over the basics.

“In other words, [the verbal agreement is] saying the wage is acceptable, but there is not yet a full 100 percent agreement in a formal sense between Zubimendi and Arsenal.”

As such, while it is not guaranteed that a move will transpire, it seems like the Gunners remain in a good position to get a deal done, although they may still be a little cautious, given that the Spaniard previously changed his mind about moving to Liverpool.

According to a report from Spain, Arsenal are also set to battle Liverpool for another midfielder this summer, with the two Premier League clubs competing to sign highly-rated Rosenborg youngster Sverre Nypan.

The Merseyside club seem particularly keen on signing Nypan, with the report revealing they are planning to accelerate the move in order to beat their title rivals to his signature. However, the north Londoners are not willing to go down without a fight, as they consider the 18-year-old a key signing for their future project.

"Devastating" Nypan is one for the future

Given that the teenager is unproven outside of Norway, he may not be a regular starter for the Gunners straight from the off, should they win the race for his signature, but there is every indication he could be a top signing for the future.

The young Norwegian was particularly impressive in an attacking sense during the 2024 Eliteserien campaign, picking up eight goals and seven assists in 28 matches, and he recently received high praise for his passing ability from freelance scout Ben Mattinson.

Mattinson has also asserted that Nypan has “world-class potential”, so he could be a steal at just €12m (£10m) this summer, and Arsenal must ensure they beat their Premier League rivals to his signature.

Sheffield Wednesday finalising move to sign 27 y/o who’s impressed Rohl

Sheffield Wednesday are now finalising a move to sign a defender who’s impressed Danny Rohl, according to a report.

Owls bring in January reinforcements

One of Wednesday’s main tasks during the January transfer window was to renegotiate a deal to sign Southampton’s Shea Charles on loan, after the midfielder’s initial spell at Hillsborough came to an end.

After securing a deal to sign Charles until the end of the season, the Owls also brought in an additional midfield reinforcement, signing Stuart Armstrong from Vancouver Whitecaps.

Having signed winger Ibrahim Cissoko on a loan deal from Toulouse, Rohl is likely to be happy with the business he managed to get done this winter, although he was unable to bring in a defender before the deadline.

ByDominic Lund Jan 29, 2025

In the latter stages of the January transfer window, it was reported Wednesday were pushing to sign Vissel Kobe’s Ryo Hatsuse, who had impressed Rohl.

The defender’s contract expired on January 31st, meaning it is still possible to get a deal done, and The Star report the Owls are now closing in on a deal to sign Hatsuse on a free transfer.

The former Vissel Kobe man has been training with the Championship side since last month, receiving praise from Rohl after catching the eye during his time at Middlewood Road.

Negotiations over a deal have been ongoing since the 27-year-old started training with the team, and Wednesday are now close to completing a deal for the player who would fill their last remaining spot on their 25-man squad list.

Exciting news for Wednesday

Wednesday are in a good position to make a late-season play-off push, currently just two points off the top six, but it is important that Rohl has sufficient strength in depth heading into the remainder of the campaign.

Max Lowe has been the first-choice option at left-back for quite some time now, and the Englishman has put in some solid performances, receiving the joint-highest SofaScore match rating in the recent victory over Queens Park Rangers.

As such, Hatsuse may find it difficult to force his way into the team initially, but Rohl will certainly be glad to have additional depth heading into a busy period.

Yorkshire chair Lord Kamlesh Patel set to stand down

Announces plans to relinquish role at club’s next Annual General Meeting

Lord Kamlesh Patel has announced he will step down as Yorkshire chair at the club’s next Annual General Meeting in March.Lord Patel, who took over from Roger Hutton in November 2021 at the height of the club’s racism crisis, endured a turbulent tenure that began amid the suspension of Headingley’s international hosting rights and the withdrawal of a raft of sponsors that left the club facing bankruptcy. His response to that crisis included sanctioning the sacking of Yorkshire’s entire backroom staff in the wake of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of institutional racism – a move that continues to be contested by the affected parties. However, despite enduring significant opposition from within the club membership – notably from a group led by the former chair, Robin Smith – Patel instigated a series of reforms during his tenure that focused on equality, diversity and inclusion, such as improved processes for whistleblowers to report discrimination.By reducing cost barriers within Yorkshire’s Pathway programme – including free kit and coaching for boy’s and girl’s regional cricket – the club has also seen an upturn in participation and diversity on his watch. He also oversaw changes to the club’s governance that ensuredtheir right to host England matches was restored.”It has been an honour and a privilege to work for such a prestigious organisation,” Patel said in a statement issued by Yorkshire. “I have made the difficult decision to step aside at the next AGM and enable the club to continue on its important journey of change under a new chair.Related

“I would like to thank those members who have been hugely supportive of the changes that the board have introduced at Headingley. I would also like to thank the staff and board members who have all worked tirelessly during what has been a transformational period in Yorkshire’s history.”There is still much for the club to do, but I have the strongest faith that Yorkshire will be back at the pinnacle of English cricket for the long-term.”Further measures undertaken during Patel’s tenure include the provision of a more inclusive atmosphere for matchdays at Headingley, Scarborough and York, with more family-friendly alcohol-free areas and sensory rooms. However, speaking at the latest DCMS parliamentary hearing in Westminster last month, Patel hit out at the lack of support that he had received from the previous ECB regime during his tenure, and indicated that the criticism and abuse he had received in the course of his time at the club was a contributory factor in his decision to stand down.”If I was an individual who wasn’t a member of the House of Lords and hadn’t had any sort of leadership experience, you would walk away,” he told MPs.”I don’t know how Azeem gets the strength to carry on. You would just run. In the public eye, we get flak [but] this is relentless. And this is from an area where you don’t expect it – this is sport, for God’s sake.”Individuals who have just been [making] a concerted attack, I do not think people understand, I don’t think the ECB has got it.”Following the announcement of Lord Patel’s departures, Stephen Vaughan, Yorkshire’s chief executive, said: “Kamlesh should be extremely proud of what he has achieved at Headingley during his tenure as chair.”The structures that have been put in place are vital in ensuring that Yorkshire is a club that people are proud to be associated with.”Equality, diversity and inclusivity are at the heart of our club and I am excited to work with the board, executive team and new chair to continue on this journey of meaningful change.”

Newcastle want "brilliant" forward for £37.5m, he's open to top-flight move

Newcastle United face slipping away in the hunt for Champions League qualification this season and Eddie Howe will want to react in the transfer market this summer.

Injuries and suspensions heighten Newcastle's need for new signings

With the football calendar more hectic than ever before, Eddie Howe has been dealt a difficult hand in the lead-up to his side’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool next weekend as injuries and suspensions mount at St James’ Park.

Recently, news broke that Newcastle full-back Lewis Hall has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a foot injury, leaving the former Bournemouth manager light at left-back for consecutive trips to London, starting with their journey to West Ham United on Monday night.

The Toon Army will also be without suspended winger Anthony Gordon, who is set for a three-match ban for violent conduct owing to a confrontation with Jan Paul van Hecke in the defeat to Brighton last weekend.

Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Kieran Trippier aren’t at full fitness, while Jamaal Lascelles will definitely miss the showpiece occasion at Wembley as a long-term absentee. Given their Premier League position is sliding, supporters are in no doubt that fresh additions are needed to shore up the squad this summer.

Reports suggest that Inter Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu is high on Newcastle’s list this summer amid competition for his services from Bayern Munich. Maintaining a similar theme, the Magpies are now circling for an equally talented star with a reputation that would excite the St James’ Park faithful.

Newcastle United keen to sign Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman

According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are keen to sign Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman and he could be available this summer for £37.5 million.

Liverpool are also thought to be in the hunt for his signature, with the France international open to a Premier League move after suffering a dip in form at the Allianz Arena.

Club to offer Newcastle 3 stars on combined £383k-a-week in Isak swap deal

Would this be a good outcome for the Magpies?

1 ByHenry Jackson Mar 5, 2025

Despite previous approaches from Arsenal and the Saudi Pro League, Coman has made it evident he wants to stay in Europe and a move to either England or Spain would appeal from his perspective. Labelled a “brilliant character” by Julien Nagelsmann back in 2022, the 28-year-old has registered six goals and four assists in 32 appearances across all competitions, mainly coming off the bench as a substitute.

Still, Coman has averaged around 1.7 shots and 1.6 completed dribbles per Bundesliga fixture circa 2024/25. On the face of it, a new challenge may be needed to maximise his creative capabilities and Tyneside could be the perfect environment for him to kick on.

Gujarat Giants couldn't obtain medical clearance for Dottin before deadline

Gujarat Giants have issued a statement saying they were not able to obtain medical clearance in time for their allrounder Deandra Dottin, because of which they had to replace her with Australia allrounder Kim Garth for the ongoing Women’s Premier League. The franchise had earlier said that Dottin was “recovering from a medical situation”. In response to that, Dottin tweeted: “I really appreciate all the messages but truth be told I’m recovering from nothing but the Holy Ghost anointing thank you #GodIsGood #GodIsInControl.”On Sunday, Giants issued a clarification saying: “Deandra is a world-class player and a wonderful signing for the franchise. Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain a medical clearance before the defined deadline for this season, such clearances are a requirement of all players participating in the WPL.

“We look forward to seeing her return to the field soon. Subject to the clearance of her medical report, she will be part of the Gujarat Giants squad in the upcoming seasons.”Giants had bought Dottin at the auction for INR 60 lakh (US $73,000 approx.) after bidding started for her at a base price of INR 50 lakh.Garth, on the other hand, had gone unsold at the auction last month. Garth recently shifted to Australia after completing the necessary formalities and has even signed a three-year deal with Melbourne Stars in the WBBL. She was part of the Australia squad that won the T20 World Cup in South Africa, though she didn’t get a match.Garth joined the Giants squad on Friday but didn’t play the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians, which Giants lost by 143 runs.

Report: Vicente Sánchez threatens to miss CONCACAF Champions Cup final for Cruz Azul amid contract demands

    WHAT HAPPENED?

In the lead-up to the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup Final against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Cruz Azul are facing internal turmoil as manager Vicente Sánchez has reportedly threatened not to take the bench unless key contract demands are met.

According to ESPN, tensions escalated after it became public that Cruz Azul does not plan to renew Sánchez’s contract beyond the current season. Although the Uruguayan coach’s deal runs through December 2025, he is pushing for an immediate extension – both for himself and for his long-time collaborator and fitness coach, Rubens Valenzuela, whose contract expires on May 31, just one day before the final.

Sánchez has also demanded that bonuses and performance-related incentives be paid in full prior to the final, emphasizing solidarity with Valenzuela and highlighting the uncertainty surrounding his own status. Despite leading the first team for months, Sánchez technically remains under a contract intended for the U-23 squad and has received no formal assurances about his future with the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Initially, the club and Sánchez had agreed to revisit his position after the final, with a meeting scheduled for June 2 to evaluate the team’s performance and coaching methods. However, the situation has taken a turn following reports that Cruz Azul has already begun talks with other managerial candidates—a revelation that reportedly angered Sánchez and may have influenced his recent change in stance.

Adding to the drama, the Uruguayan manager posted a brief but pointed message on Instagram:

“Heads held high. Let’s go all together for the Concachampions Final – 1.06.2025.”

The post, later shared by Cruz Azul’s official account, appears to reaffirm his commitment to the final while underlining ongoing tensions behind the scenes.

    WHAT RUBENS VALENZUELA SAID

As speculation intensifies around the future of Cruz Azul manager Vicente Sánchez, the club’s fitness coach and key member of his staff, Valenzuela, has spoken out on social media, responding to reports that questioned the coaching staff’s methods.

According to ESPN, one of the reasons the club has opted not to extend Sánchez’s tenure beyond the CONCACAF Champions Cup Final is that his training model is considered outdated. Valenzuela, whose contract expires on May 31 – just one day before the final – took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend his work and address the rumors.

"We would never ask for a renewal. That’s not our place. That’s something you earn, and it’s up to the executives to decide whether to offer it or not. They have every right to do what they think is best for Cruz Azul," Valenzuela wrote.

He continued, offering a pointed reflection on the criticism:

"I always welcome feedback. I’m the one who apparently designs obsolete training sessions, has poor or no methodology, bad game plans, and doesn’t use technology… among many other faults."

Valenzuela’s remarks came after reports emerged that Cruz Azul leadership is moving in a different direction following the Champions Cup Final against Vancouver Whitecaps on June 1. The statements reflect a growing sense of frustration within Sánchez’s staff, who have led the team through the tournament while facing uncertain futures and, reportedly, without the full support of the club’s hierarchy.

The situation adds further tension to Cruz Azul’s preparations for the continental final, where they aim not only to win silverware but to secure a place in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CRUZ AZUL?

Cruz Azul are set to face the Vancouver Whitecaps on June 1 at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, with the CONCACAF Champions Cup title and a ticket to the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup on the line. The club hopes to end the season on a high note after falling short in domestic competition, including a painful elimination at the hands of Club América.

Boost for Rohl as "brilliant" Sheffield Wednesday star returns to training

Dany Rohl is now hopeful a “brilliant” Sheffield Wednesday player will soon return following his recent injury, according to a recent report.

Sheffield Wednesday injury news

The Owls suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Burnley last weekend, meaning it is now back-to-back defeats for the Championship side. But they don’t have long to wait to end that run, as they welcome Sunderland to Hillsborough on Friday night, a team who have had their own struggles in recent weeks.

Ahead of that game against the Black Cats, Wednesday have suffered a fresh injury blow as winger Anthony Musaba has suffered an injury setback, meaning he will miss the game against Sunderland and likely a few more.

“At first it looked good; he trained on Sunday (after the Coventry game), but he got a small reaction. Now he has had two rejections.” Rohl said.

“I hope it is this week, then next week, and then before Plymouth he is back. Sometimes at first an issue starts in one part of the body, and then maybe with some different movements it goes into another part.

Sheffield Wednesday managerDannyRohllooks dejected after the match

“It is a shame, but he is positive, and I think he will be available for the end of the season, maybe the last eight or nine games. We are working on it; he is still positive. It is harder, of course, to have him out of the squad.”

Rohl hopeful "brilliant" Sheffield Wednesday player will return from injury

But while Musaba may have suffered a setback in his recovery from injury, Rohl has revealed that defender Dominic Iorfa is close to a return and is hopeful he will be available after the March international break.

The 29-year-old, who has been dubbed “brilliant” by teammate Barry Bannan, has been out injured since the middle of January, but he is now closing in on a return, as his recovery is being stepped up. The defender has done light training this week and is expected to train on a more serious basis next week, before he is considered to be in contention to be part of the matchday squad again.

Rohl told The Star: “We are on a schedule. The only thing with Dom is that we first said we would give him two extra weeks because it was a second injury in a short time. Normally, with this injury, you can carry on earlier, but it was a decision from our side to give him a little bit more time.

“The good thing is that he trained now this week, and it is now about next week, making sure he can go again. We will train with him on a bigger pitch, where he comes through the acceleration and the longer sprints. It is good to see him, and in the short term, hopefully by the international break, we will have one more option.”

Iorfa has featured in 17 games in all competitions this season, 16 of which have come in the Championship. The centre-back, who can also play as a full-back, has been a key player for Rohl, starting 13 league games.

West Ham battling Arsenal and Liverpool to sign "very rare" £67m striker

West Ham United are now battling Arsenal and Liverpool for the signing of a “very rare” kind of centre-forward, with Graham Potter already making plans for life after Evan Ferguson returns to Brighton from his loan spell.

West Ham identify Evan Ferguson alternatives for next season

Ferguson’s temporary stint at the London Stadium doesn’t include an option or obligation to buy, so if the Irishman impresses enough from now until the end of this Premier League season, West Ham would need to head back to the negotiating table to discuss an extended stay.

West Ham are reportedly already planning for life after the 20-year-old. Indeed, Man United striker Rasmus Hojlund is on West Ham’s summer radar, with the 22-year-old Denmark international seen as an alternative to Ferguson (TEAMtalk).

Meanwhile, there are also reports that Roma striker Tammy Abraham is a target for West Ham, with the current AC Milan loanee and former Chelsea striker subject to contact from east London (TEAMtalk).

Niclas Füllkrug could be back from injury sooner than expected in a boost for West Ham, and may even return to the fold this month (Claret & Hugh), but the German’s time in England has been blighted by a lack of availability and isn’t getting any younger.

Michail Antonio’s horrific car crash means West Ham will be without the Jamaica international for a lengthy period as well. Danny Ings is also out of contract at the end of this season, meaning it is quite simply imperative that the Irons bring in another striker this summer.

West Ham battling Arsenal and Liverpool to sign Hugo Ekitiké

According to journalist Loic Tanzi, via his colleague Christopher Michel on X, Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitiké is attracting attention from Potter’s side.

Hugo Ekitike for Frankfurt.

The Frenchman has come on leaps and bounds since departing PSG for the Bundesliga, scoring 18 goals in 35 total appearances so far this season, so he’s unsurprisingly on the radar of elite English sides.

Eintracht have set a price tag of around £67 million to sell the 22-year-old, with West Ham battling Arsenal and Liverpool in the race for Ektike.

Michel has heavily endorsed Ekitike as a centre-forward option, calling him a “very rare” commodity for his age and a “complete striker”, but it remains to be seen whether West Ham can sway him considering the stiff competition.

“Heki is an exceptional player at 22 years old,” wrote Michel on X. “Yes, he lacks directness. But such a complete striker is very rare in Europe.”

Sandeep Lamichhane set to be included in Nepal squad for tri-series

Lamichhane is currently out on bail, facing charges of alleged sexual coercion of another person

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Feb-2023Sandeep Lamichhane could be included in Nepal’s squad for their Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series at home in Kirtipur against Namibia and Scotland, in what would constitute his first appearance since his arrest last year. Lamichhane is currently out on bail, facing charges of alleged sexual coercion of another person. Nepal’s squad for the series is likely to be announced by February 10. His name is in a 14-man squad sent to the ICC for registration purposes – as the event is an ICC tournament – but that could still change when the squad is officially announced. His potential selection had been signposted after the Cricket Association of Nepal revoked his suspension last week. Lamichhane has been training with the team at a pre-series camp. The lifting of the suspension led to protests over the weekend in Nepal, calling for a boycott of the upcoming games against Namibia and Scotland. Cricket Scotland and Cricket Namibia issued statements, to say that Lamichhane’s availability was a matter for CAN and the ICC to consider.Related

And if Nepal were to go on tour, Lamichhane’s participation would depend on whether the court gave him permission for it or not.The suspension came into effect in September last year after an arrest warrant was issued against Lamichhane in Kathmandu. He was granted bail for the equivalent of around US$ 15,300 but was barred from leaving the country until the final verdict.Lamichhane, 22, is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the only one to have played in T20 leagues in most parts of the world, including in the IPL, the BBL, the PSL, the BPL, and the CPL. When the news of the arrest warrant came out, Lamichhane was in the West Indies with Jamaica Tallawahs, his CPL team. He returned to Nepal after that, and was taken into custody on October 6.He is also the world’s second-fastest bowler to 50 ODI wickets and third-fastest to 50 T20I wickets, and last played international cricket in August 2022, in the T20I series against Kenya.
