Emily Arlott three-for sets up Phoenix, Amy Jones-Ellyse Perry stand brings them home

Birmingham Phoenix cruised to an eight-wicket victory over Trent Rockets at Edgbaston after an astonishing collapse from the visitors saw them slip from 70 for 1 to a sub-par total of 116 for 9.Emily Arlott was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3 for 19 including the key scalp of captain Nat Sciver, and was ably supported by Georgia Elwiss and Sophie Molineux, who picked up two wickets apiece for the home side.Rockets never really looked as if they had an answer for the Phoenix’s all-round bowling brilliance, with all bar three batters failing to post double-digit scores.Phoenix then cantered home with the bat in reply, Amy Jones and Ellyse Perry posting an unbeaten 44 and 39 respectively to secure an undefeated start to the season for Phoenix.Rockets initially struggled to find any form of momentum in their innings. Molineux’s first set of 10 deliveries cost her just six runs inside the powerplay, and included the wicket of Bryony Smith for 1, leaving the visitors teetering at 1 for 1.Sciver, making her first Hundred appearance of 2022, and Elyse Villani were then able to build a solid foundation, taking the Rockets up to 70 for 1 thanks to their half-century partnership. It was a partnership of stability rather than intent, however, and when Villani holed out to Perry at long on off the bowling of Elwiss, it signalled the start of a miserable collapse for the away side.Sciver departed not long after for an uncharacteristically quiet run-a-ball 31, before overseas star Mignon du Preez hooked an Issy Wong short ball straight into the hands of Gwen Davies for just 2. Only Kathryn Bryce, Rockets’ No. 10, could register double digits as the visitors crumbled to an under par 116 for 9.Phoenix didn’t exactly get off to a flyer in reply, but then they had no need to with such a low total to chase. Sophie Devine holed out attempting to line up Sciver and departed for 16, while Eve Jones went for 11 not long after, but from then on it was plain sailing. No real risks were required, and Perry and Amy Jones were able to manipulate the field and pick up singles for much of the middle of the innings.Amy Jones in particular looked in fine touch, as she racked up her 44 off 32 deliveries. A succession of glorious shots off England’s Sarah Glenn flew off the bat and over the boundary rope for four to bring her side within touching distance of victory. The second, a reverse-paddle past point, stood out as a moment of brilliance in a largely jeopardy-free chase, as she and Perry accelerated at the death to see them over the line with nine balls to spare. Not even last week’s hat-trick hero Alana King could provide enough magic stardust to successfully defend the total the Rockets had posted earlier. Glenn and Katherine Brunt, too, were unable to find that all important breakthrough, and both finished wicketless as the Phoenix simply proved too much to handle.

Fulham now set to meet "great" player’s agent after submitting proposal

In a move that could see another former Premier League player earn redemption at Fulham, the Cottagers are reportedly set to meet with the agent of one defender they’ve already submitted a proposal for this month.

Fulham transfer news

Craven Cottage is quickly becoming the land of opportunity for struggling players desperately looking to turn things around. It’s a turnaround that Andreas Pereira enjoyed after Manchester United failure, it’s one that Alexander Iwobi is enjoying more than ever and it’s even one that Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez are enjoying following stagnation at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

All those transitions from struggling performances into starring shows have culminated in a top-half side who are capable of causing an upset on any given day under Marco Silva. Sat 10th and in an unexpected race to qualify for either the Europa League or the Europa Conference League, Fulham could yet use the January transfer window to bridge the gap on such sides even further.

Names such as Anthony Caci have already been mentioned in reports this month, but before the Mainz 05 defender arrives, those in West London could turn their attention to another player who needs to turn things around in his career.

According to Calciomercato, via Sport Witness, Fulham are now set to meet with the agent of Emerson Royal having already submitted their first proposal to sign the AC Milan defender.

The Premier League side are reportedly proposing a better formula than Galatasaray, although the overall fee is less than the Turkish club’s €2m (£2m) loan fee with an option to buy of €13m (£11m) in the summer.

Fulham now considering offer to sign "dominant" gem they're captivated by

He’s one to watch…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 15, 2025

Emerson’s potential exit arrives as a result of Kyle Walker’s reported move to AC Milan from Manchester City this month to make the right-back surplus to requirements at the San Siro. What is Milan’s trash could quickly become Fulham’s treasure, however, as they look to transform yet another struggling player.

"Great" Royal needs Silva transformation

A defender who struggled at Tottenham Hotspur and often stole the headlines for moments to forget on the pitch, Royal could arrive at Fulham with an all too familiar story and one that the Cottagers could help turn around. In doing so, the right-back could also come back to haunt his former side with their London rivals and earn Premier League redemption.

Royal was praised even after his struggles ended in a move to Milan, with Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou telling reporters as relayed by One Football: “Yeah, Emi super guy, great pro again. It is one of those decisions you have to make when you are trying to change squads. Really popular amongst the group and not just because he is a great guy,

“He didn’t play a lot last year in his preferred position, but you wouldn’t know it the way he trained every day. He is the hardest worker at training and really top guy. He is a guy you would want to spend time with. A big heart, loved by all and I think it is a fantastic move for him.”

PL rivals want him: Man City facing awful Palmer repeat over £25m star

Manchester City might have been in poor form over the past three months or so, but it has not meant that youngsters have not had an opportunity in the first team. Since Phil Foden first broke into the City side, there has been a clear pathway there for academy stars.

It was meant to be a big season for Oscar Bobb in 2024/25, but that has been put on hold. The youngster played once this term, grabbing an assist, but picked up an injury at the start of the season. The likes of Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Nico O’Reilly have also been given opportunities for the Citizens.

Manchester City's Oscar Bobb

However, there is one academy star who has struggled for regular minutes this term and is now linked with a move away from the club.

The academy star who could leave Man City

The player in question here is James McAtee. The highly-rated attacking midfielder has not necessarily got the minutes people expected he would at the Etihad Stadium this season, and could now leave the club search of more game time.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are one of the sides interested in signing the 22-year-old. The Magpies are believed to be monitoring the situation in case of a potential move this winter.

In terms of a price for the attacking midfielder, City could ask for upwards of £25m. That would be a deal of pure profit given he is an academy graduate. Having previously been out on loan, the youngster could well get a permanent move in order to flourish.

Why selling McAtee could be a mistake

It is a shame that McAtee has not had regular game time under Pep Guardiola in the 2024/25 campaign. The Salford-born attacker has played just nine games across all competitions for his boyhood club. However, the 357 minutes he has racked up are equivalent to 3.9 full 90-minute games.

Manchester City midfielder James McAtee.

Despite the lack of first-team action McAtee has seen this term, he has still made a lasting impression. He grabbed his first goal for the Citizens in the Champions League against Slovan Bratislava earlier in the season.

It might well seem curious that McAtee has not played much for the East Mancunian side this term. He is clearly someone well-rated by Guardiola, who said as recently as last weekend that he “always felt this guy could play” with the star-studded City team.

Upon hearing the news that a Premier League rival wants to sign an academy graduate who is highly rated, City fans may get a bad sense of deja vu. It is certainly reminiscent of the deal to sell Cole Palmer to Chelsea back in 2023.

He cost the West Londoners £42.5m, which proved to be worth every penny. The Wythenshawe-born attacker has gone on to become “the best player in the Premier League” according to Jamie Carragher.

Indeed, the stats certainly suggest that with 37 goals and 21 assists in 66 Chelsea games so far.

Not only are the pair both Manchester-born, and City academy graduates, but they are left-footed attacking players who love to operate in the pockets. The similarities are there for all to see.

McAtee – who talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed a “special player” – certainly ticks the boxes of what Newcastle are looking for this winter. Chris Waugh of The Athletic confirmed on Boxing Day that they are targeting a right-winger.

McAtee is a versatile player and can operate as a winger, in the half-space or as a number ten or eight. For Sheffield United on loan, he played right across the frontline, just like Palmer does at Chelsea.

This is a move that City need to ensure they handle carefully. Of course, McAtee’s lack of game time is a worry for his development as a player, but if he leaves and ends up exploding at a Premier League rival, as Palmer has, it would be another move they might regret.

After Kinsky: Spurs step up move for "special" England ace who’s Modric 2.0

The January transfer window may just be a week old, but Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou clearly aren’t hanging about, having already snapped up the signing of Slavia Prague starlet, Antonin Kinsky, in recent days.

The £12.5m capture of the 19-year-old goalkeeper represents yet another youthful addition for Spurs in recent times, with the Lilywhites forking out to sign the teenage trio of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert over the summer.

With first-choice stopper Guglielmo Vicario sidelined with injury, Kinsky – who has had “a fantastic season”, according to talent scout Jacek Kulig – could come straight into the side for this evening’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool, offering an instant opportunity to impress.

A signing then for both the present and future, the teenager’s capture marks an interesting start to the window for the north London side, with further moves potentially set to lie in store.

Latest on Spurs' transfer activity

As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Daniel Levy and co could be set to ‘fast-track’ a move for Lille and England playmaker, Angel Gomes, this month, with the 24-year-old seemingly up for grabs with just six months left to run on his existing deal in France.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to the report, Spurs are keen to sign the Manchester United academy graduate immediately this month, rather than secure a pre-contract agreement ahead of a summer move.

The suggestion is that Postecoglou’s side are ‘eager to discover’ whether it would be possible to sign the diminutive midfielder over the coming weeks, rather than being forced to wait, with a potential enquiry seemingly in the works.

As per the piece, Gomes – who made just ten first-team appearances during his time at Old Trafford – ‘fits the bill’ as a potential ‘cut-price deal’, with the Premier League side potentially able to secure a bargain by signing the in-demand star.

What Angel Gomes could bring to Spurs

As The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke noted over the summer, there was a feeling at the end of last season that Spurs were in need of a new number six: ‘What Tottenham needed, the argument went, was a Rodri’.

That could be where Gomes comes into the picture, with former United youth coach Paul McGuiness having tipped the 5 foot 6 ace to be that Rodri-esque figure on the international stage:

Capable of operating as a deep-lying playmaker or in a more advanced attacking midfield berth, Gomes – who has chalked up four appearances for the Three Lions thus far – would be a worthwhile capture on the cheap, having been described as someone “who can play deeper but play like a ten” by ex-interim boss, Lee Carsley.

Also dubbed a “special” talent by former Lille boss Jocelyn Gourvennec, that ability to create from deep ensures he could represent the next Luka Modric at Spurs.

The 5 foot 8 Croatian – who made 160 appearances for the club before departing for Real Madrid in 2012 – is also a silky technician of slight stature, much like Gomes.

Indeed, Modric is noted as the third-most similar player to the Englishman among midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues, as per FBref, thus emphasising the notable similarities between the pair.

While unsurprisingly not quite at the level of the Ballon d’Or winning genius just yet, Gomes does boast similar traits – as indicated above – with regard to his creative prowess, as shown with regard to his progressive passes record, as well as his shot-creating actions average.

There could be an argument that Spurs – who have already shipped 30 league goals this season – are in need of a more defensive-minded midfield asset, although what Gomes would bring is a greater sense of control, in the mould of Modric, with data analyst Ben Mattinson previously suggesting that he would be the solution to England “lacking control” in the centre of the park.

The only question now is whether the Lilywhites can get the deal over the line this month, or be forced to wait until the summer window.

Stephen Eskinazi breaks Middlesex record again – and this time it's Surrey who suffer

Ryan Patel’s century in reply can’t damage skipper’s great day

ECB Reporters Network10-Aug-2022Stephen Eskinazi maintained his rich vein of form with a second successive century – and Middlesex’s highest-ever 50-over score – to steer his side to victory in their Royal London Cup derby against Surrey. The 28-year-old Seaxes skipper, who had struck his previous best of 146 not out three days earlier against Durham, eclipsed that effort with a majestic 182 at Radlett that included 17 fours and six sixes.Eskinazi, who passed 1,000 List A career runs during his 136-ball knock, shared a third-wicket stand of 142 with Pieter Malan (64 from 60) and batted almost right through to underpin the Middlesex total of 351 for 7.”I’m enjoying my cricket at the moment and feel like I’m playing with a sense of freedom,” he said. “I guess I’ve got a bit of a point to prove after being left out of the Hundred and the best way to silence critics and put my name in that hat is to win games for Middlesex and put in performances like I did today.”Ryan Patel’s resolute effort of 118 from 99 kept Surrey in the hunt but, once he was caught in the deep trying to force the pace, the visitors folded for 249 with 50 deliveries unused.Invited to bat, Middlesex made a steady start as Eskinazi and Mark Stoneman put on 61, but they were pegged back by the introduction of Conor McKerr (three for 38).McKerr’s additional bounce took Stoneman by surprise and the left-hander slapped one to point, while Sam Robson played on after a brisk 18 that included a six and four off Nick Kimber. However, that paved the way for Eskinazi and Malan to join forces and the pair calmly proceeded, with the South African advancing to his second half-century of the tournament.Teenage spinner Yousef Majid – who bowled tidily to finish with two for 51 – achieved the breakthrough, trapping Malan leg before as he attempted to sweep and that triggered a middle-order Middlesex wobble. With runs drying up and wickets falling regularly to Majid and Cameron Steel, the home side drifted to 273 for seven before Eskinazi regained the initiative in the death overs, slamming two McKerr full tosses over the fence.Although Eskinazi departed with three balls remaining, Josh Blake pulling off an impressive one-handed grab behind the stumps, the captain’s efforts were enough to lift Middlesex above the 350 mark.Surrey were beset by problems at the start of their reply, with skipper Ben Geddes dragging on to Umesh Yadav in the third over and Steel forced to retire with concussion, having been struck on the helmet by a ball that leapt off a length.Blake, who replaced the stricken Steel at the crease, was soon making the return journey after flashing outside off stump at his first ball from Ethan Bamber – leaving the visitors 23 for three in effect. However, Patel rose to the challenge, clubbing Bamber for the first six of the innings and punishing some loose Martin Andersson deliveries as he and Tom Lawes (27) added 79 from 74.The left-hander crashed consecutive leg-sixes off Yadav to reach his hundred, but he gradually began to run out of partners as Andersson’s smartly-judged boundary catch removed Lawes and Bamber (three for 46) returned to bowl both Nico Reifer and Nick Kimber in his second spell.Patel eventually skied Andersson into the hands of long-off and, although Middlesex were held up by debutant Nathan Barnwell’s spirited 31 from 27, it was not enough to alter the outcome and Yadav (three for 52) wrapped up victory with two wickets in three balls.

He’s better than Brobbey: Spurs working on signing "outrageous" striker

There’s no denying that Tottenham Hotspur have been hugely disappointing in the Premier League so far this campaign, placing huge pressure on Ange Postecoglou in the process.

No fan could’ve predicted that the Lilywhites would be occupying a place in the bottom half of the table with 15 games remaining, with the hopes of another campaign of European football all but over.

Injuries have decimated the first-team squad, often leaving huge holes and temporary solutions which have massively contributed to the lowly league standing in England’s top flight.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecoglou

Dominic Solanke was the latest player to join the list of absentees, opening up another gaping hole at the centre-forward position, massively affecting the firepower available to the boss.

As a result, such a blow has highlighted the need for investment before the closure of the transfer window, with one player emerging on their radar in recent days – potentially being the perfect player to fill the void during his lay-off.

Spurs spotted scouting attacking star

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Spurs have been spotted monitoring Rangers forward Hamza Igamane in recent weeks after his impressive form north of the border.

However, Postecoglou’s men aren’t alone in the hunt for the Moroccan, with fellow Premier League sides Fulham, Newcastle, Brighton, Brentford and Aston Villa also targeting the attacker.

Hamza Igamane

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form for the Scottish side throughout 2024/25, scoring 13 times across all competitions, including four in the Europa League.

The report goes on to state that the club’s hierarchy are working out a deal for the youngster, but are weighing up other options before the end of the window.

It’s crucial that the hierarchy make the right call with their investment, especially with the Rangers ace becoming one of a number of attackers touted with a move to North London in the last few days.

Why Igamane would be better than Brobbey for Spurs

Over the last couple of days, Ajax striker Brian Brobbey was linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with West Ham also another rumoured destination for the Dutchman.

Brian Brobbey for Ajax.

The 22-year-old has struggled for goals this campaign, notching just one in 17 Eredivisie appearances, starting just nine of those games in the process.

However, after the initial interest in a loan deal, journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Lilywhites were no longer pursuing a move for Brobbey – leading to links to Igamane as the club look to make attacking reinforcements.

Despite the lack of movement for the Ajax academy man, it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, with a move for the Rangers talisman undoubtedly a better option moving forward.

Igamane has outperformed Brobbey in numerous key areas throughout 2024/25, showcasing what a superb addition he would be should they win the race for his signature.

The Moroccan, who’s been dubbed “outrageous” by analyst Ben Mattinson, has massively outscored the Dutchman, whilst also producing a much higher shot-on-target accuracy rate and conversion rate – showcasing his clinical edge in the final third.

He’s also registered more shots per 90, whilst also achieving more shots on target per game, having the nouse and eye for goal that the frontline could lack in Solanke’s absence.

Whilst it’s unclear how much a deal would cost Postecoglou’s men, it’s evident that the 22-year-old possesses a lot of qualities that could bolster the forward line – something which desperately needs doing this month.

Competition may be tough for his signature, but given his figures from the current campaign, Spurs must act quickly to secure the services of Igamane to prevent a top division rival stealing him from under their grasp and starring elsewhere.

Man City make offer for £150k-p/w star, his club have found his replacement

Manchester City have now tabled an offer to land another new face for Pep Guardiola this January, according to a fresh report, as they finally look to address a problem position at the Etihad.

Man City looking to rebuild

The reigning Premier League champions have endured a woeful domestic season so far, and sit a massive 12 points behind leaders Liverpool having played a game more than Arne Slot’s side.

They have looked to address their issues already this January, splashing almost £150m on new signings already. Omar Marmoush has been signed from Eintracht Frankfurt, while defensive duo Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis have both also arrived in deals that clearly have one eye to the future amid an ageing squad at the Etihad.

Guardiola’s side are also thought to be keen to sign Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso before the end of the transfer window, though that could well be a deal that drags until the summer depending on the price demanded by the Old Lady for their standout fullback.

But despite their hefty spend this month, City have yet to address their biggest issue; the absence of Rodri. The Spaniard has missed most of the season through a knee injury and is unlikely to return until the summer, which has left Guardiola’s side light in midfield.

Their no.1 target was believed to be Martin Zubimendi, but Rodri’s understudy for Spain now appears bound for Arsenal this summer, which has forced the Blues to reconsider their options in the middle of the park. As a result, the club have now reportedly tabled an offer for a midfielder able to make an instant impact on Guardiola’s side upon arrival.

Manchester City make loan offer for midfielder

Reports in Italy claim that Manchester City have now made an offer to sign Douglas Luiz for the remainder of the 24/25 campaign as they look to bolster their midfield.

The former City group midfielder left England over the summer to move to Juventus, but has struggled for gametime under Thiago Motta and is thought to be free to leave this month.

He has previously drawn the praise of Pep Guardiola during his time at Villa, who said of the Brazilian in 2020: “He’s a guy who’s played a lot of minutes, he’s an important player for Aston Villa. A guy who’s clever with the ball, he’s so physical and strong. I’m happy he’s developing really, really well.”

Now, it is claimed that Luiz is keen to work under the Spaniard after being denied the chance previously due to work permit issues. However, there is still work to be done on any deal.

As it stands, Manchester City have offered a “costly” loan move with an option to buy the Brazilian for €35m, but Juventus are looking for a loan with an obligation or a permanent exit in the coming days, though their stance could shift should they be faced with the reality of continuing to pay Luiz’s £150,000 a week wages in the final hours of the transfer window.

Should a deal be agreed, it is reported elsewhere that the Old Lady have already identified Luiz’s replacement, and will look to sign Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka on loan, who is in turn out of favour at Stamford Bridge. Could the dominos fall in Man City’s favour in the final days of the window?
