Big Picture

The curious case of Virat Kohli keeps getting interesting. Prior to the series his case was distilled into this emotive question: How can you drop him from the playing eleven when he is in such good form? Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Gautam Gambhir return to take the top three. Yuvraj Singh is the best part-time spinner and can win a game with the bat, Yusuf Pathan’s explosiveness will be vital lower down, and Suresh Raina can potentially get going right from the start and is more suited to the lower order, in Indian conditions, than Kohli.Or so it seemed before this series. With Yusuf clicking in one game and Yuvraj too hitting a fifty, apart from his bowling, the pressure has escalated on Raina. If there is Yusuf and Yuvraj for power hitting, would it better to blood an in-form Kohli ahead of Raina? That’s the thought Kohli will strive to strengthen in this decider and something that Raina will try to kill. The series itself hangs on a knife’s edge. India had just won three random games against South Africa in South Africa before this series and are on verge of something special. For their part, South Africa have hung on, despite threatening to implode in all the games, and pushed the series to a decider. The weather might play spoil sport, though, with the forecast predicting thunderstorms on the match day.South Africa’s World-Cup puzzles too are falling in place. JP Duminy has shown that he has the temperament to lead the lower order, Faf du Plessis hinted at a solid temperament, and Morne Van Wyk, with an accomplished performance in the Twenty20 game, is putting pressure on Colin Ingram. Smith has had a torrid time in the last two games and though he is an established player, a good show at Centurion won’t hurt him. They have been shy to give Imran Tahir any exposure in this series, probably preferring to keep him hidden till the World Cup.Morne Morkel has been simply outstanding in this series, extracting bounce from sluggish tracks in the last two games and indicating he might be a force to reckon with even on traditional slow-and-low subcontinental tracks. The ball to remove Yusuf Pathan – a full length delivery that seamed away at the last instant – in the fourth ODI also showcased that he is just not a hit-the-deck short of length bowler but someone who thinks a lot about his game and has the full repertoire.Lonwabo Tsotsobe has been in rich form though one still has to wait and watch how he performs in the subcontinental conditions. He does have a good off cutter but can he continue to churn out good performances even in the World Cup?

Players to watch out for…

Graeme Smith: He looked a shadow of the man who scored a confident 77 in the second ODI. And it just can’t be put down to the pressure of a brittle lower order as he has struggled to put bat to ball in the last two games. He has stabbed inside the line, groped outside the line, stumbled forward, and has had a horror time. Will he get back to form with a confident knock in the last game?Suresh Raina: The selection sword dangles over him. The pressure is truly on. He got to a start in the third ODI but threw it away with a wild slog against Morne, just as the game entered the final lap. He combusted cheaply in the last match, rushing out too early to be left stranded. Meanwhile, Kohli has been marching from strength to strength. Until now, Raina had the clear upper hand as he was more suited to the lower order and his case only strengthened when you throw in his off breaks into the equation. But he can’t afford any more slip-ups.

Indian news broadcasters lift IPL boycott

Indian news broadcasters will cover the IPL after all, with the IPL and the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) resolving the dispute regarding tournament footage

Cricinfo staff12-Mar-2010Indian news broadcasters will cover the IPL after all, with the tournament organisers and the News Broadcasters’ Association (NBA) resolving the dispute regarding tournament footage. Lalit Modi confirmed the development on the eve of the third season of the IPL in his Twitter page. Further details on the compromise are still awaited.”NBA issue resolved. News broadcasters will carry IPL news,” Modi wrote. “Both us moved forward to ensure all fans don’t miss the IPL. My sincere thanks to the NBA members for making it happen.”The NBA, which has 34-member channels, had last month decided to boycott the tournament in protest against what it called “arbitrary” guidelines and contentious clauses regarding tournament footage. The decision followed a meeting between the NBA and officials of the IPL and Set Max, the tournament rights holder. The media coverage guidelines for 2010 had reduced the duration of match footage that news channels could carry — 30 seconds per bulletin and seven minutes a day. Repeats would be allowed three times a day, as against four previously, and while match footage could earlier be telecast with a five-minute delay from the end of the live telecast, it had been expanded to a half-hour delay. The first IPL season was boycotted by the international news agencies over several contentious clauses in the media accreditation guidelines, including a bar on supplying photographs to cricket-specific websites such as Cricinfo. The second season witnessed a repeat after News Media Coalition, the umbrella body that includes global news and photograph agencies Reuters, AP, AFP and Getty Images, objected over the same clause. However, the boycott was lifted after the IPL removed the clause from the terms of coverage.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane has made the expected impact in Germany, as one of the most prolific forwards on the planet, but he is yet to be joined in his new surroundings by his young family and Tuchel is confident that the elite performer will become even better for Bayern once he feels completely comfortable at the Allianz Arena.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Bayern boss Tuchel has told UEFA’s of bringing Kane on board: “He's more than talented, he's absolutely world-class. He has talent, ability, aura, personality, modesty, and love and dedication to the game. We persuaded the captain of England to leave England and I think we can pat ourselves on the back for that for a while. He's a huge signing. Harry has made a super start and will get even better the longer he trains with us and once his family arrives too. When he feels at home here, we'll see his full potential.

“He has a massive influence because you can't underestimate the fact that everybody has some influence. He is the first one on the training pitch and has a certain relaxed attitude. He has a certain personality, he loves training. And if you are such a great player, everything that you do has an impact. Everything that you do in the dressing room is observed: how you come across, how open you are, when you go out on to the pitch, how you train. With him everything is exemplary so it's just good to have him here.”

PRIMEIRO TEMPO

Porém o Santinha não desanimou e, minutos mais tarde, tratou de igualar o marcador. Aos 15, Danny Morais conseguiu fazer o desvio e a bola acabou entrando. 1 a 1.

'I'd go to Pakistan but I'd be scared' – Russell

West Indies allrounder Andre Russell has said he would be willing, but “scared”, to travel to Pakistan if the Pakistan Super League (PSL) were to be played there next year

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Feb-2016West Indies allrounder Andre Russell has said he would be willing, but “scared”, to travel to Pakistan if the Pakistan Super League (PSL) were to be played there next year. Russell, who represents Islamabad United in the PSL, said he was only being defensive based on the knowledge he had gathered about the security situation in Pakistan from reading and listening in the media.”Based on what I have heard and stuff you know, I mean, I am going to be scared obviously,” Russell told ESPNcricinfo, when asked if he would play in Pakistan. “But, for some reason, I would go to Pakistan. But listen, I am going to be scared. That’s the thing.”Last year, Zimbabwe became the first international team to play in Pakistan since the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore. The ICC, however, has not yet given a clean chit to the security situation in Pakistan. On the eve of the PSL, Najam Sethi, the league’s chairman, had revealed that hosting a few matches in the major cities of Pakistan in the second season was definitely part of his plan.Russell explained his fear, equating travelling to Pakistan to going to war-torn Iraq. “It is like me going to Iraq based on what I have heard about Iraq. You are going to have nice places in Iraq. You are going to have nice places in Pakistan. I’ve seen pictures, beautiful places, beautiful people. But it is [about] what is surrounding [them],” Russel said.Russell even gave the example of walking through the streets back home in Jamaica. “A lot of crime going on in Jamaica. I’m from Jamaica. I’m going to tell, Jamaica is the most beautiful place in the world. You are going to say, “No, but, they are shooting people.” I will say, no, no. Don’t worry. So it is going to be similar [about going to Pakistan]. So if I have to go, I’ll go. But if I don’t have to, I don’t mind.”Russell is the first high-profile overseas player in the PSL to express a willingness to play in Pakistan. In the past few weeks, other players such as Australia’s Shane Watson and Russell’s West Indies teammate and Twenty20 captain Darren Sammy have said they would travel subject to security clearance.Watson, who was picked by Islamabad in the draft, said he had pleasant memories of Pakistan, having already toured the country in 2005 with Australia A. “I had a really good time while playing in Pakistan in 2005 during the Australia A team tour,” he said on the eve of the PSL. “However, security is the most important thing and if players around the world are declared to be very safe I will be happy to play there.”I love playing cricket wherever it is around the world. If security situation continues to get better there, it will be nice and Pakistan hadn’t had home team advantage for a long time now because of security concerns and hopefully it works out their way soon.”Sammy, who plays for Peshawar Zalmi, said he felt bad for fans in Pakistan who have been deprived of international cricket for a long time. While conceding that playing the PSL in the teams’ home cities would could fill the vacuum, Sammy said the decision to travel was not his.”Well, to be honest, these decisions are never ours,” Sammy said at a media conference in the first week of the tournament. “It is the government and the cricket body to decide, but what I could tell you is that the fans of Pakistan cricket have been missing some good international cricket.”We as cricketers get to play in front of our home fans and that is something Pakistan have not had an opportunity [to experience], to play in front of their own people for a while. It is sad, but hopefully things could get resolved and every territory could get a chance of playing cricket before their own crowd.”

Richardson delivers series win to Australia

Fast bowler Jhye Richardson continued his outstanding form to set up a comfortable series-sealing victory for Australia Under-19s against England Under-19s in Perth

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Apr-2015
ScorecardFast bowler Jhye Richardson continued his outstanding form to set up a comfortable series-sealing victory for Australia Under-19s against England Under-19s in Perth. The Australians took a 3-1 lead with one match to play after Richardson collected 4 for 33 to restrict England to 138, bowled out in the 50th over after being sent in.Richardson claimed two wickets in the first over of the match and England never really recovered, although Aaron Thomason was a stand-out for them with 70 in an innings where no other player reached 20. Richardson, from Western Australia, is comfortably the leading wicket taker in the series with 12 victims at 13.16 from four games.Australia had little trouble in their chase as Jake Carder and Sam Heazlett put on 78 for the opening wicket. Heazlett was bowled for 47 off 46 balls but Carder had plenty of support and was still at the crease on 52 not out when the winning runs arrived, with seven wickets in hand and 132 balls to spare.

Whatmore set to be named Zimbabwe coach

Dav Whatmore is expected to be appointed as Zimbabwe’s coach ahead of the 2015 World Cup, replacing Stephen Mangongo who was sacked from the position earlier in December after a five-month tenure

Firdose Moonda28-Dec-2014

Dav Whatmore is set to be unveiled as Zimbabwe’s coach ahead of the 2015 World Cup, replacing Stephen Mangongo who was sacked from the position earlier in December after a five-month tenure, ESPNcricinfo understands. The support staff will also include a new batting coach, who is yet to be named, and Douglas Hondo as bowling coach, with an extension to Whatmore’s deal due to be negotiated after the World Cup.The new coach’s primary task will be to ensure Zimbabwe have a better tournament than they did in 2011, where they only managed to beat the Associates in their group and lost heavily against the other Full Members. Whatmore will have little over a month to prepare Zimbabwe ahead of the showpiece event in Australia and New Zealand, and he will be doing so at a Dubai-based academy as well as in their home country. Zimbabwe will also play four 50-over games with Canada as part of their World Cup preparations.Whatmore has previously been in charge of Asian sides Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Under Whatmore, Sri Lanka won the 1996 World Cup and Pakistan claimed the 2012 Asia Cup. During the 2007 World Cup, Whatmore led Bangladesh to victories over India and South Africa, helping the team reach the Super Eights.Brendan Taylor welcomed Whatmore’s appointment and said that he would be a “great addition” to the Zimbabwe set-up. “Welcome to @dfwhatmore! A great addition to Zimbabwe cricket. Certainly myself and the players are looking forward to working with him,” Taylor tweeted.Since 2000, Zimbabwe have lurched from one crisis to another – most notably a six-year self-imposed exile from the longest format. After their Test comeback in 2011, they have enjoyed limited success including wins over Bangladesh and Pakistan, and an ODI victory over Australia, but they have continued to struggle away from home.Zimbabwe were blanked 8-0 on their recent tour of Bangladesh, in which they lost all three Tests and all five ODIs – a result that led to Mangongo’s sacking. They have only been on two other tours in the last three years, to New Zealand and West Indies, and lost every match in all formats on both those visits. Their domestic game, meanwhile, has been marred by strikes over non-payment of salaries, and the financial situation still remains unstable. It is also expected that former Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell will rejoin ZC, after resigning as chairman of selectors in 2011. He is likely to return as the board’s managing director of cricket, essentially an overseeing role. Givemore Makoni will retain his position as convener of selectors over a panel which will include the coach, Hondo, the captain Elton Chigumbura, and Babu Memon, a long-serving administrator and former team manager.

Van Zyl eyes opening slot

Stiaan van Zyl will make his debut at No. 7 in the absence of the injured JP Duminy, but he has suggested his long-term future in the Test side may lie further up the order

Firdose Moonda09-Dec-2014The worst kept secret in South African cricket is that Stiaan van Zyl will bat in JP Duminy’s No.7 spot for South Africa in the first Test against West Indies next week. The best kept secret is that if Duminy’s recovery goes according to plan and he returns for the Boxing Day fixture, van Zyl may not be relegated to the bench. He could take up another position in the line-up – one that would seem far better suited to a man who normally bats at No. 3.”In Zimbabwe, Russell [Domingo, South Africa’s coach] had a chat with me and said the only spot that will maybe open up on performance base would be the opening spot,” van Zyl said ahead of the three-day tour practice match between the South African Invitation XI and West Indies in Benoni. “If there is only a gap in the future at the top f the order, then that’s what I am looking at because I think from three to seven, the squad is quite set, the only position could be in that opening spot.”Van Zyl travelled with the South African Test squad for their winter series in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe as a reserve batsman and understood he was unlikely to get a game unless it was injury-enforced. But it was also where he was told there might be room for him at the top, following Graeme Smith’s retirement and Alviro Petersen’s lean run, which got leaner on the tour.Effectively, van Zyl’s revelation, which included that he move from one-drop to opening the batting for the Cobras this summer in preparation for doing the same for South Africa, has put Petersen on notice that unless his 23-innings century-less streak ends, his time could be up. The other opener, Dean Elgar, who was only installed there three Tests ago when Smith retired, has scored a century and a fifty since being placed there and should get a decent run.Van Zyl already considers himself ready to join Elgar, after he finished last season as the first-class competition’s leading run-scorer. “Last season I did very well and in about 60 percent of the games, I faced the new ball. So, I almost opened anyway,” he said. “Of course, it’s a a different thing if you stand in the field all day and then you’ve got to open because normally I’ve got 20 minutes or half-an-hour feet up but I think my technique and my patience and my batting is equipped for that of an opening batter.”Van Zyk also believes making his Test debut lower down the order could assist in the eventual transition he hopes to make. “Batting at six or seven could also be like opening because you could be facing the new ball. Maybe getting an opportunity there could be better than opening the batting in my first game because that’s a different level of pressure,” he said. “I’ll walk in, maybe 400 for five now so it’s a different scenario. It’s probably better to start your international career in those circumstances.”The bullishness over the position he expects his team to be in comes from the knowledge of both where they are ranked – No. 1 in the world – and who their opposition are. West Indies have just come through a fractious period, marred by a payment dispute and scarred by the absence of Darren Bravo and Chris Gayle from this Test series.Van Zyl is not alone in identifying South Africa as firm favourites, which he believes will be another factor that will work to his advantage. “Starting against West Indies with all the stuff going on and with us being the favourites – it’s a home series and I know Centurion – and if I play, my mom and dad will be here, two of my friends will be here so all that support, at stuff will be in my favour,” he said.He still understands there will be a step up needed, as there always is. “In club cricket you get half a decent bowler and the other bowlers are not so good, in franchise levels, you get three good bowlers and one that you can maybe take on a little bit but now at international level, all the bowlers are great bowlers and they don’t give you much,” van Zyl said, before adding that being part of one of the country’s most successful domestic outfits has prepared him for the quality of international cricket.”Through all my years, I’ve faced a lot of Vernon Philander and Rory Kleinveldt in the nets, day in, day out – its’ also international quality bowlers that you face. And if we get on the park here, I will be facing the same bowlers I will play in the first Test so I will get net practice against the guys I will play against.”Wet weather up country has threatened to wash out the second successive tour match in Benoni by a touring side, after India’s game last summer could not go ahead because of heavy rains. But with or without a sighter, van Zyl hopes he will do well enough to get more than just one Test, whether it’s at No.7 if Duminy remains out, or higher up.”If Russell tells me here’s three Tests for you and I’m going to play all three I’ll be in a different boat,” he said. “If I just play the one Test, I will be over the moon but maybe if I get two Tests, that will be put me in a different state of mind, because I know I’ve got four innings so I don’t need to score in every innings I get.”
