E o América-MG aproveitava. América-MG 1 a 0.

Ranji games to be played at neutral venues

All Ranji Trophy matches from the 2012-13 season onwards will be played at neutral venues, the BCCI has decided

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2012All Ranji Trophy matches from the 2012-13 season onwards will be played at neutral venues, the BCCI has decided. The decision, taken at the board’s working committee meeting in Chennai on Monday, will reduce home-team advantage in the Ranji Trophy by denying teams the opportunity to prepare pitches that suit their strengths. After the meeting, BCCI president N Srinivasan said there was no need yet for an inquiry into the Indian team’s poor form away from home. However, the board has taken some steps to develop cricket within the country, with the use of neutral venues for Ranji matches the biggest change. The BCCI had introduced neutral venues for Ranji knockout matches in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons but the move was opposed by some senior players. Sanjay Bangar, an 18-year-old veteran of the Ranji circuit, said neutral venues would give domestic players experience in varied conditions.”It is a good move,” Bangar said. “It will ensure proper facilities for players from teams which can’t provide them at the moment. Also, it will give players the experience of playing in varied conditions. Right now, a Mumbai player plays half of his matches in Mumbai. So he is used to playing only in those conditions. It will also lead to better pitches. There is a lot of pressure on home associations to prepare pitches that suit the home team. It will involve logistical issues, but it is a risk worth taking.”Narendra Hirwani, the national selector (Central Zone) and former India legspinner, said having neutral venues would allow zonal curators more control. “Yes, it will be logistically more difficult but you have to endure some pain if you want to improve the game in the country,” he said. “It is practically not possible for zonal curators to oversee pitch preparation at so many home venues. Even if they go to all the venues, it is only for a few days.”We should ideally take this a step further and improve the standard of our practice pitches. They are of such a standard usually that a spinner does not have to make any effort to turn the ball on them. He is then found out in the actual game.”The board has also announced plans for a new academy in Bangalore, the location of the National Cricket Academy. “The process is on and the budget is in the range of Rs 100 crore,” Srinivasan said. There will also be India A and Under-19 tours of the West Indies, England, Australia and South Africa over the next few years. “It will start with the India A team touring West Indies in June,” Srinivasan said.

CSA to seek legal advice after KPMG inquiry

CSA will seek legal advice into possible breaches of the South African Companies’ Act by chief executive Gerald Majola but there is no money missing from their coffers

Firdose Moonda30-Jul-2011CSA’s internal strife is not over. The body will seek legal advice into possible breaches of the South African Companies’ Act by chief executive Gerald Majola but there is no money missing from their coffers. CSA will also review their remuneration and travel policy. Those resolutions were accepted by the majority at a special board meeting in Johannesburg on Saturday where accounting firm KPMG presented their report on CSA’s financial affairs. The investigation was expected to be the conclusion of the year-long bonus scandal which started when R4.7 million (US$704,436) was paid to 40 staff members after the hosting of the IPL and the Champions Trophy. Instead, the saga has only been lengthened and will now be passed into legal hands.”There is possible irregular conduct with respect to the Companies’ Act and the fiduciary duties of directors,” president Mtutuzeli Nyoka read from a statement. “The breach in terms of the Companies’ Act refers to the CEO and the purpose of the legal advice is to ensure we take informed decisions.” ESPNcricinfo has learned that it is unlikely that Majola will be fired once the legal opinion has been sourced.Essentially, the issue of procedure forms the kernel of the findings of the external investigation. Bonuses are usually paid to CSA staff annually but when events such as the IPL or an ICC trophy are hosted by South Africa, staff receive additional payments for their work during these tournaments. Event bonuses are a precedent that have prevailed since the 2007 World Twenty20 and have traditionally not been declared though CSA’s remunerations committee (REMCO).When CSA’s auditors Deloitte picked up the payments in July last year, they reported it as an irregularity, and it was decided there would be an external investigation, something Nyoka was in favour of. Eight weeks later, at CSA’s annual meeting, a new board was elected and the inquiry was moved in-house. At the time, sources said the decision to make the investigation internal was taken because CSA had not exhausted its own procedures.A committee of inquiry was appointed under vice-president AK Khan. In November, the Khan Commission cleared Majola of any wrongdoing save for making “an error of judgment” by not declaring the payments through REMCO and ordered him to pay back R28,168 (US$4221) which was used for travel for his children. The battle did not end there and in February this year, the board passed a vote of no confidence against Nyoka, removing him as their president. Nyoka challenged the decision in the South Gauteng High Court, where it was found that his removal was unlawful and that he should be reinstated. Nyoka also demanded an explanation of the movements of R68 million (US$10.2mn) from a suspense account that was used to fund the IPL. That money has been accounted for by the KPMG audit. On the same day as the judgement that reinstated Nyoka as president, CSA issued a release stating its intention to appeal the court’s decision. They went back on that statement on May 4 at a board meeting in which Majola and Nyoka reconciled “with the best interests of cricket in mind. Nineteen days later, KPMG were tasked with the investigation which was expected to take a month to complete.Constant delays saw the inquiry stretch over more than two months and the saga is now set to continue longer. The South African Sports and Olympic Committee, the country’s chief sporting body which reports to the sports minister, will be enlisted to assist CSA find the appropriate legal expert.”We have to do it on a very urgent basis,” Nyoka said when asked what time frame would be put in place to seek the legal opinion. The advice of lawyers is being sought because of questionable corporate governance which has been plaguing the body’s remunerations and travel policies. “We need to set up some committee to make sure we tighten up,” Nyoka said.Nyoka was elected in August last year for a term of two years and was rumoured to be facing a second no confidence vote at the conclusion of this inquiry. With the saga still ongoing, Nyoka is still in office and there was no word on any possible removal.

Kolkata set sights on top spot

Big picture

Kolkata Knight Riders are the only team of the original eight to have not made the IPL semi-finals but seem to have assembled a squad capable of making it this time. The latest evidence of that came on Thursday against Delhi Daredevils. When their formidable batting stuttered, their bowlers stepped up to pull off a victory that brought their campaign back on track after two successive losses had brought back memories of dismal previous seasons. A win over Kings XI Punjab on Saturday could send them to the top of the table.Punjab’s bowlers have had a week’s rest since the pasting they received at Feroz Shah Kotla and now face another tough test as they come up against one of the strongest batting units in the tournament. Adam Gilchrist’s side were widely reckoned to be among the weakest before the start of the tournament but they have done surprisingly well so far, partly due to Paul Valthaty’s heroics. The reason Punjab aren’t in the top half of the table is that they have only played five matches, while everyone else have played at least seven. “We have to deal with what we are presented with in the schedule,” Gilchrist said. “We are very keen to play though it’s a little odd to have a full week break and then have nine games in the next 21 days.”

Team talk

Kolkata are still searching for a reliable wicketkeeper-batsman to partner Jacques Kallis at the top of the order. Their pool of candidates was reduced when Brad Haddin was ruled out of the tournament with a broken finger. Shreevats Goswami made some runs against Delhi but is yet to cement his spot. Kolkata also need to decide whether to retain the misfiring Eoin Morgan.Punjab have to sort out their bowling combination. They need to decide which Indian medium-pacer to pick along with Praveen Kumar. Shalabh Srivastava didn’t impress in his previous match, which could open the door for either Love Ablish or Vikramjeet Malik.Predict the playing XIs for this match. Play ESPNcricinfo Team selector.

In the spotlight

Shaun Marsh can make a credible case for being the most consistent batsman in IPLs – he has an astonishing ten 50-plus scores in 19 innings. His 95 was the outstanding innings in the runfest against Delhi, giving them a fright even after they posted the biggest total of the season.Kolkata brought back left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla for the game against Delhi, which proved a canny decision. With eight wickets, Abdulla is their joint top wicket-taker and his three strikes were instrumental in changing the course of the Kotla match on Thursday.

Prime numbers

  • Manoj Tiwary is averaging 97 after six innings this season
  • Paul Valthaty needs one more six to equal Yuvraj Singh for most sixes in the season

The chatter

“I think a lot of people get caught up in results. I don’t come into this game getting petrified that Kolkata won the last game.”

Spurs: Paratici in talks for McKennie

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Weston McKennie to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Calciomercato (via Sport Witness), who claim Tottenham are one of a number of clubs who have requested to sign the 23-year-old this summer, with Antonio Conte known to be a big fan of the central midfielder.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Indeed, Gazzetta dello Sport previously reported that the USA international is a player the 52-year-old has ordered Fabio Paratici to capture this summer, while Calciomercato suggest that, with Juventus planning something of an overhaul this summer, the Serie A side could be willing to listen to offers for the former FC Schalke 04 starlet.

He’d be a “leader” for Conte

With McKennie being a midfielder who is incredibly versatile, boasts a tireless work rate and is extremely effective in the final third, it is easy to see why Conte would be keen on a deal to bring the 23-year-old to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Indeed, FBref rank the £58m-rated dynamo in the top 9% of midfielders in Europe’s big five leagues for non-penalty xG per 90 minutes, as well as the top 16% for shots, the top 19% for non-penalty xG + xA, the top 16% for non-penalty goals, the top 3% for touches in the opposition penalty area and the top 3% for progressive passes received over the last 365 days.

Furthermore, the £51k-per-week talent also ranks in the top 5% of attacking midfielders in Europe’s big five leagues for interceptions per 90, in addition to the top 3% for clearances, the top 8% for aerials won, the top 7% for blocks, the top 26% for tackles and the top 40% for pressures over the last year.

As such, it is clear for all to see just how well suited the player who David Wagner dubbed a “leader” would be for Conte’s tactical setup in north London, and, with it being reported that the 23-year-old could be available for a figure of around £35m this summer, a deal would certainly not break the bank for Paratici and Spurs.

Ghumman blitzes Hyderabad to victory

Azeem Ghumman’s quickfire 59 set the Hyderabad Hawks on their way to a seven-wicket victory over Lahore Eagles at the Gaddafi Stadium. Chasing a stiff 178, Ghumman, who captained Pakistan Under-19s at the World Cup earlier this year, blasted nine fours and two sixes and added 91 in seven overs for the first wicket with Sharjeel Khan.Hyderabad briefly lost their way after the opening stand, losing three wickets cheaply and had Faisal Athar retired hurt. Thirties from Rizwan Ahmed and Aqeel Anjum, however, safely carried them to their first win of the tournament, with two balls to spare.Lahore seemed to have the upper hand after their captain Taufeeq Umar, who last played for Pakistan in 2006, played through the innings for a 78. No one else from the top seven provided him much support, but No. 8 Junaid Zia smashed four sixes and two fours to raise 47 from the final 14 deliveries. In the day’s second match, Rawalpindi Rams beat Karachi Zebras by 28 runs. The defeat knocked Karachi out of the tournament and left Rawalpindi facing a knock-out clash with Sialkot Stallions to determine who will progress from Group B.Rawalpindi were struggling at 30 for 3 when 36-year-old Naved Ashraf, in his 19th season of first-class cricket, provided them the momentum with a quick 45 which included four sixes and two fours. There were no other big contributions but a string of twenties pushed Rawalpindi to a challenging 172.Four boundaries from Khurram Manzoor in the first two overs gave Zebras’ chase a brisk start, but he fell to left-arm fast bowler Sohail Tanvir for 19. No. 3 Babar Rehman perished in the third over, and following a burst of hitting from Hasan Raza -now 28 years old but famous for being the youngest Test debutant – there was another slew of wickets which left them at a hopeless 73 for 5, a position from which there was no comeback.Lahore Lions eased to a 36-run win over Peshawar Panthers at the Gaddafi Stadium after their openers, Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad, had propelled them to a challenging total. Asked to bat, the Lahore openers gave their team a solid foundation in a 113-run stand in just 11.2 overs. Jamshed smashed eight fours and two sixes in his 79 while Shehzad’s innings was laced with six fours and one six. That wasn’t all. Umar Akmal came in and played a typically aggressive knock, carting eight fours in his 52. Thanks to his onslaught, Lahore reached 206 and it proved adequate.Peshawar, in their reply, failed to emulate the start provided by the Lahore openers, with the first wicket falling on 16. The Lahore bowlers struck at regular intervals and while there were contributions that promised much, the highest, unfortunately for Peshawar, was 35 from Zohaib Khan at No.8. Wahab Riaz shone with the ball for Lahore, taking 3 for 15 as Peshawar folded for 170.
