November 1991 – Bursts on to the scene with 149 on first-class debut for Queensland against South Australia at the Gabba, only a few days after his 20th birthday. Finishes his first Sheffield Shield season as the competition’s leading run scorer.May 1993 – Makes his one-day international debut at the age of 21 on the tour of England. Scores 29 at Old Trafford but does not break into the Test side during the Ashes tour.March 1994 – Mark Taylor falls ill on the morning of a Test in Johannesburg, allowing Hayden to receive his baggy green. His debut is unremarkable – he scores 15 and 5 – apart from having his thumb broken by Allan Donald. In the next six years he manages only six more Tests.January 1997 – Scores his first Test century when he makes 125 against West Indies at the Adelaide Oval. His hundred took four and a half hours and his effort was overshadowed by Michael Bevan taking ten wickets for the match.March 2000 – Wins a permanent recall to the Test team during the tour of New Zealand when the incumbent opener Greg Blewett is dropped for good.March 2001 – Completes a remarkable Test tour of India as the leading run scorer from either team with 549 at 109.80. His trip concludes with a then career-best 203 in Chennai.April 2001 – Stamps himself on the one-day arena with his first ODI century when he makes 111 against India in Visakhapatnam.November 2001 – For the first time he reaches triple-figures in a Test at his home ground the Gabba. His 136 is part of a 224-run opening stand with Justin Langer. The two men are in their second Test as an opening combination – the partnership would last more than five years.February 2002 – Rounds out one of the purplest patches imaginable when he scores 122 in Johannesburg. It is the fourth consecutive Test in which he has made a century. He narrowly misses making it five in a row when he is dismissed for 96 in Cape Town.February 2002 – Wins the Allan Border Medal following a terrific 12 months in which he scored 1509 Test runs at 71.85. His tally of 1391 Test runs in the 2001 calendar year had been an Australian record.January 2003 – Is named a Cricketer of the Year.October 2003 – Enters the record books with the highest individual innings in Test history when he scores 380 against Zimbabwe at the WACA. He holds the mark for six months until Brian Lara posts the first quadruple-century in Test history.July 2004 – Scores a century in each innings of a Test against Sri Lanka in Cairns.November 2005 – Repeats his four-centuries-from-four-Tests effort when he brings up 110 against West Indies in Hobart. His run included 111 against the ICC World XI in Sydney.January 2007 – Regains his ODI spot permanently having been on the outer since the 2005 tour of England.February 2007 – Hammers the highest score ever by an Australian in an ODI when he makes an unbeaten 181 against New Zealand in Hamilton. Incredibly Australia lose the match but Hayden’s effort is remarkable all the same, considering he broke a toe during the innings.April 2007 – Finishes Australia’s successful World Cup campaign in the Caribbean as the tournament’s leading run scorer with 659 runs at 73.22 including three centuries, none of which came against minnows.January 2008 – Wraps up another outstanding Test series against India, this time at home, when he scores 103 in Adelaide to finish with 410 runs at 82 from three Tests.May 2008 – Misses the tour of West Indies with an Achilles injury.January 2009 – After struggling through a tour of India, finishes the home summer of Tests with 149 runs at 16.55. Receives a standing ovation when he walks off the SCG after making 39 in the second innings as speculation grows it will be his last Test. Is told by the selectors a few days later that he has been dropped from Australia’s one-day team.

'I was an idiot' – Steyn apologises for IPL comments

Dale Steyn has called himself an ‘idiot’ for the comments he made about the Indian Premier League a few days ago.Steyn said that “the IPL was only four overs a game and it was like a paid holiday; you only had to work hard if you felt like it, which is probably why we finished second-last.” However, in response, he was unreservedly apologetic.”I was speaking just moments after being named as South Africa’s cricketer of the year at a gala banquet and I was pretty emotional,” he said. “I was trying to be funny and just ended up being stupid – I was an idiot.”I was asked whether the IPL had been hard physically and I said ‘no’ because I only had to bowl four overs per game. The rest of my comments were meant to reinforce the fact that Twenty20 cricket is very, very different from Test cricket as far as wear and tear on the body is concerned.”The truth is, I tried my absolute hardest for Bangalore in every game and I was as disappointed as anyone that we fared so poorly. I desperately regret my naivety and look forward to the opportunity of helping the franchise reach the semi-finals next year.”I have written to the franchise to express my unreserved regret and apologies and tried to explain the circumstances of my comments. Sometimes, when you lose, you try to make a joke of it to lessen the disappointment. It was a stupid thing to say and a painful lesson for me to learn.”

Spurs: Kane set to miss start of the season

As per The Telegraph, Harry Kane is set to miss the start of Tottenham’s Premier League campaign and their opening match against Manchester City following his participation at the European Championship with England.

The Lowdown: Kane future up in the air

Of course, Kane’s future is up in the air – he told Tottenham earlier this summer that he wishes to leave the club (Sky Sports).

Manchester City have been heavily linked with the England captain as they look to replace Sergio Aguero in attack.

The Latest: Kane to miss season start

Unsurprisingly, Kane has been given some extra time off this summer after helping England reach the final of Euro 2020.

As a result, no matter which club he is with by 15 August, he will not take part in the 2021/22 Premier League’s opening weekend.

The Verdict: Makes sense

This comes as no great surprise. As the Three Lions skipper and most important player going forward, Kane started every single one of England’s games at the summer tournament and completed two matches which went to extra time (Transfermarkt). He also made 49 appearances in all competitions for Spurs during the most recent campaign, so he is bound to be in need of a reast.

By the time the new season starts, he could have completed a transfer to the Citizens, even if Daniel Levy and co are desperate to keep him in north London (Manchester Evening News). With the 27-year-old being Tottenham’s top league goalscorer for seven seasons in a row and being hailed as a “special player” by former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, it’s little wonder that the club’s hierarchy want to do all they can to retain his services.

In that case, perhaps it would be better for them if he is unavailable – the last thing they would want is to lose to a Kane-inspired display from the Premier League champions if he swaps Spurs for Manchester in the next three weeks.

In other news, this man expresses his disappointment at missing out on the Spurs managerial position.

Four youngsters tipped to leave Leeds

Four youngsters are expected to leave Leeds United in the summer transfer window as they look to push on elsewhere in their careers.

The Lowdown: Leeds look to go up a gear

Marcelo Bielsa’s side secured an impressive ninth-place finish back in the Premier League in 2020/21, standing out as a hugely entertaining team in scoring 62 goals and conceding 54.

Leeds must now push on and look to do even better next season, which may require top-quality new signings being brought into Elland Road.

For the young players at the club, their chances of playing time could become more unlikely if there is a summer influx, and a fresh update has emerged regarding four academy talents.

The Latest: Quartet on the move?

According to Football Insider, Robbie Gotts, Niall Huggins, Jordan Stevens and Bryce Hosannah could all move on this summer.

Leeds are thought to be ‘keen’ on sealing permanent exits for the quartet prior to the September 1 cutoff at the end of the transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-8/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense

Football at the top level is ruthless, and while it is sad to see talented youngsters being moved on, it may be best for all parties at Leeds.

The Whites have reached a stage where they need readymade top-level players in order to compete in the Premier League, and it is hard to see academy prospects making a real difference to Bielsa’s first team.

If they do leave, Gotts, Huggins, Stevens and Hosannah will all hopefully flourish elsewhere and ultimately prove to Leeds that they were wrong to sell them.

Goalkeeper Hendrik van Crombrugge has admitted he would love to sign for Celtic, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Van Crombrugge profiled

Van Crombrugge is a Belgium international and currently plays for Anderlecht, where he is the club captain.

The 28-year-old has been with his current employers since 2019 and has made 43 appearances for the club, keeping 14 clean sheets.

He’s valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt and is thought to be on £18,000-a-week. Van Crombrugge recently signed a new contract through to 2025 and has only ever played in his native country, however, it seems as if he has a soft spot for Celtic.

The Latest: Van Crombrugge’s comments

Van Crombrugge was talking to the media, with his comments relayed by The Daily Record.

The shot-stopper admitted he ‘loves’ Celtic and would ‘immediately’ sign for the Hoops if they ever came calling.

“What I like in clubs is tradition. That’s why I love Glasgow Celtic.

“If someone tells me one day that I can go and play for them I’ll be off immediately asking ‘where do I sign?’!

“Mind you my manager, Vincent Kompany, would laugh reading this. He would tell me it wouldn’t suit my style because it would be too kick and rush there!”

The Verdict: Will Ange sign a new ‘keeper?

Ange Postecoglou has Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain, Conor Hazard and Ross Doohan as goalkeeper options at this moment in time, so it’ll be interesting to see if he signs a new shot-stopper before the window closes.

Mat Ryan emerged as a target after Postecoglou’s Parkhead arrival, with the club assessing the Hoops’ goalkeeping options, however, Celtic missed out on the Aussie to Real Sociedad.

Who knows, van Crombrugge’s transfer admission could catch Celtic’s eye, especially following Barkas’ error against FC Midtjylland earlier in the week.

Postecoglou defended Barkas following his first game in charge, but the Hoops’ goalkeeping situation could be one to keep a close eye on over the coming weeks.

In other news: £10k-p/w ace likened to George Best is now Celtic’s top target.

James leads the way as Glamorgan win again

Steve James guided Glamorgan to their second Championship win of the season with a marvellous 121 as the Welsh county defeated Durham by five wickets

Andrew Hignell18-May-2002Steve James guided Glamorgan to their second Championship win of the season with a marvellous 121 as the Welsh county defeated Durham by five wickets. After rain had delayed the start of the final day`s play by an hour, James adopted a positive outlook as he and David Hemp began Glamorgan`s pursuit of 201 to win the game. The pair had added a brisk 56 when Hemp was dismissed in the opening over of the afternoon session, but a flurry of crisply timed strokes from James kept the Cardiff scoreboard ticking over, and the Glamorgan skipper duly reached a well deserved century from 138 balls with 15 fours. It was the 44th century of James` first-class career, and his first Championship hundred for 11 months. “It was good to get some runs on the board”, he said afterwards, “because I`ve not had the best of starts to the season. To score a hundred, and for Glamorgan to win was very nice.””We are playing some good cricket at the moment, and in particular, Darren Thomas is bowling as well as at any stage of his career. He bowled a superb spell in Durham`s first innings. Mike Kasprowicz is in good form as well, whilst Simon Jones` extra pace is starting to frighten a few people!”
