In Focus: Chelsea up bid for Oxlade-Chamberlain, but would Liverpool be better for him?

Chelsea have increased their offer for Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to £35m, according to the Daily Star.

What’s the word?

The England international has been linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer as he has just one year left on his current contract and is yet to sign a new deal.

Chelsea reportedly tabled an initial £25m bid for the 23-year-old, but they were knocked back.

Now, the Daily Star claims that the Premier League champions have added £10m onto their offer in the hope of persuading Arsenal to sell.

The publication states that Oxlade-Chamberlain is ‘attracted’ by the idea of joining the London rival as he would have an opportunity to play Champions League football.

In addition to that, he is likely to receive wages close to his reported £120,000-a-week demands.

What about Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp is also rumoured to be an admirer of Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the Daily Star reporting that Liverpool were willing to match Chelsea’s opening £25m offer.

If the England star decides to leave Arsenal, which club would be the best option; Chelsea or Liverpool?

At Stamford Bridge, Oxlade-Chamberlain would likely be used in a wing-back position, similar to the role that he possessed at times for the Gunners last season.

He could play on either side, but would be fighting Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso for a first-team spot, which would make him more of a squad player than a starter – much like his current predicament at Arsenal.

At Liverpool, he would have more opportunities to be in the first XI, and a chance to play in his favoured midfield role, particularly now that Adam Lallana will miss the first few months of the season.

In terms of success, though, Chelsea is the place to be as the club are more likely to win silverware than Liverpool judging on recent years.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain does decide to move on, then he needs to list his priorities, as he would fit into both clubs.

Rooney will leave Man United, Scholes believes

Manchester United will have to prepare for life without Wayne Rooney as club legend Paul Scholes believes the veteran striker will leave, in quotes made to The Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

Having surpassed Bobby Charlton to become Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer, Wayne Rooney has certainly ensured legendary status at Old Trafford but limited opportunities since Jose Mourinho took charge mean the club may have to wave goodbye.

That’s the view of another United legend, Paul Scholes, who told The Daily Mail he believes Rooney will leave the club if he continues to find himself on the bench regularly- which will hand a boost to MLS and Chinese clubs eyeing his services.

With United boasting the attacking talents of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, there is little room left for Rooney to fill and that could mean the end for the player who joined the Red Devils in 2004.

What was said?

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Scholes admitted he can no longer see Rooney staying at Manchester United for the long-term:

“It’s a strange one. No one will be more frustrated than Wayne at not playing. Being a sub will be driving him up the wall. When he gets his chance he has to take it because he has real competition.”

“If it carries on going the way it is, I can’t (see Rooney staying for another two years). Maybe it will be re-assessed at the end of the season if he’s in and out of the team. I don’t see him as a player who will accept that. He will want to be at a team where he’s playing every week.”

Should Rooney leave?

It’s clear Manchester United don’t need Wayne Rooney anymore but the player himself may need the Red Devils, as an exit from Old Trafford would likely see him move to America or China- which would severely affect his opportunities with the international team.

Rooney has previously stated he will retire from England duty after the 2018 World Cup and a transfer this summer could see him miss out on the tournament all together, which would be a big blow for the skipper who’s eyeing one last charge for international glory.

Having struggled at international tournaments since his breakthrough at Euro 2004, Rooney will want to redeem himself in Russia next summer and may only get that chance if he’s still on United’s books.

Aston Villa v Manchester City – confirmed starting XIs

It was a baptism of fire for Remi Garde when he took over at Aston Villa. His very first game at Villa Park was against a Manchester City side who were on rampant form. There was a raucous atmosphere in the Fabian Delph derby, and perhaps the Villa fans will come to the game with toy snakes once again. That day, though, Villa managed a commendable goalless draw. They looked solid at the back and were a threat going forward on occasion, too. Since then, Villa have improved, but they’re still bottom of the table and still look utterly doomed. Last season’s FA Cup finalists may be preparing for life in the Championship next season, but perhaps the cup is just the distraction they need in order to regain some confidence and end the season well. If you can’t gain confidence from beating Manchester City in the Cup, then where can you get it?City, meanwhile, are just coming off the back of a hard-fought game against Everton in midweek where they managed to progress to the Capital One Cup final, but at the cost of losing Kevin de Bruyne, possibly for the rest of the season given the time it will take to get him back to match fitness.Fatigue and injuries have been a problem for City this season already, but their biggest problem has, at times, looked like apathy. Will they be up for an FA Cup fourth round match away to the bottom side? If they are, it could be a thrill to watch, but City’s away form has been dismal this season, and a lot of that might have to do with the attitude of the squad, especially when faced with away games. It would hardly be a traditional Cup upset, but if Villa could pull it off, surely it would be unexpected – but with City’s attitude and form problems away from home, it would hardly be a shock. Here are the teams:

Arsenal player ratings vs Burnley: The Gunners can't stop scoring! Superb Bukayo Saka and awesome Martin Odegaard dominate in five-star showing

Mikel Arteta's side were in rampant mood once again as they destroyed the relegation-threatened Clarets at Turf Moor

Bukayo Saka scored twice as a dominant Arsenal side smashed Burnley 5-0 at Turf Moor to move back to within two points of leaders Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta's side were in rampant mood once again, just as they were at West Ham last time out, with the win meaning they have now started the calendar year with five successive league victories for the first time in the club's history. They have scored 21 goals in those five games, while conceding just two.

The exceptional Martin Odegaard set them on their way after just five minutes, drilling a superb finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Saka then scored twice either side of half-time, the first from the penalty spot and the second with a thumping finish into the roof of the net from Odegaard's pass.

Leandro Trossard then added a fourth before Kai Havertz put the gloss on another impressive performance from the Gunners, finishing well after a fine solo run.

Dominated the midfield. Another player, like Odegaard, who is in exceptional form. Pushed Arsenal forward throughout.

    Kai Havertz (8/10):

Burnley really struggled to pick up his runs from deep. His touch let him down at times when he got into some good positions in the first half, but it was another good display from the German who capped it off by scoring an excellent goal to make it 5-0.

    Martin Odegaard (9/10):

Absolutely outstanding. Set the tone with his superb finish after just five minutes and went on to produce a masterclass in playmaking, just as he did at West Ham. A player in exceptional form.

    Attack

    Bukayo Saka (9/10):

Followed on from his excellent display at West Ham. Took his penalty well and caused the Burnley defence all sorts of problems all afternoon. Thumping finish to make it 3-0.

    Leandro Trossard (7/10):

Won the penalty when he drove into the box. Should have scored when he missed his kick in the first half, but led the forward line really well. Deserved the goal he got in the second half after wasting another couple of good chances just before.

    Gabriel Martinelli (7/10):

Set up the first goal with some superb play down the left and looked to stretch Burnley every time he got the ball.

Dhoni credits singles for Kohli's success under pressure

India captain MS Dhoni has said Virat Kohli’s ability to rotate strike is the key to converting starts into big scores in pressure situations after Kohli’s unbeaten 55 off 37 balls took India to a six-wicket win over Pakistan at Eden Gardens on Saturday.Kohli arrived in the third over with the score on 14 for 1 and had only faced two deliveries by the time India fell to 23 for 3 in the fifth over in pursuit of Pakistan’s 118, but Dhoni said Kohli thrived in such situations by not depending on boundaries to get himself and the team out of trouble. Up until the ninth over, Kohli had only struck one boundary but had taken nine singles in his first 13 deliveries in partnership with Yuvraj Singh to add the first 31 runs in a 61-run stand that took India within striking distance of victory. In all, Kohli scored off 28 of his 37 deliveries, including 19 singles.”It’s very simple. What an innings is all about is how you convert it, when you’re under pressure,” Dhoni said after the win. “There are a few ways to handle pressure. At times we have seen, in Test cricket, or ODI and T20 format, when there is a lot of pressure, often they go for the big shot. It seems at that point of time that that’s the best option, but when you’re under a lot of pressure, the best way to deal with it is to take a single, go to the other end, because that calms you down, and at the same time you have that positive intent because you’re looking for that single. And you know your areas.”Everybody knows what their strength is – for some it’s a flick, for some it’s the cut. So if it’s in your area, you have to play your shot. If not, try to take a single, go to the other end. And if you see his batting, that’s what he really does. And where he has an edge over the others is, you have to push hard. That’s why he loves batting with individuals who can run hard with him. Because running hard is the easiest way to score runs. You hit it in the middle, between long-on and deep midwicket, if you have two good runners, you can convert that one into two, or one-and-a-half runs into two, and that puts a lot of pressure on the bowler and the fielders.”The other ingredient to success that Dhoni attributed to Kohli is his “hunger to perform”. Dhoni said Kohli’s preparation habits enabled him to consistently score runs rather than going through dips in form.”He takes everything as a challenge,” Dhoni said. “He wants to improve, he wants to contribute in each and every game, and that’s what it’s all about, because he wants to contribute, he wants to score runs, he prepares well, he takes care of his fitness. He knows, he understands now, in different wickets how he’s supposed to bat and score runs. And we all know, once he gets going, once he gets a start, he always converts it into a big innings, which I feel is one of the most important things for any youngster coming into the game.”MS Dhoni attributes Kohli’s ability to thrive under pressure to his eagerness for taking singles•IDI/Getty Images

Kohli’s success helped shield the problems faced by other batsmen on the day, in particular Suresh Raina who was out first ball to Mohammad Sami. The left-hander has struggled recently, scoring 1 in two of his previous three T20I innings. However, Dhoni deflected questions about Raina’s form and said the team still had confidence in him.”People don’t score runs in one or two games, that question will be asked,” Dhoni said. “If Shikhar doesn’t score in one more game that question will be asked, why not Jinks to open and Shikhar left out. I feel it is important to back players and at the same time, if you see there are too many people who need to bat at that No. 3 slot.”If you compare the stats, especially when it’s happening in India, you’ll see there are lot of individuals who should bat at three, but Virat gets an edge, and in the same way I think [Raina] deserves that No. 4 position more than anyone else, and it’s important to back him. Yes, there might be tactical changes when he won’t get that slot, but overall I think he’s the best option.”Dhoni also gave credit to his spinners for exploiting conditions after winning the toss and inserting Pakistan to bat first. The India captain said the amount of time the pitch spent covered due to rain throughout of the day was a strong factor in his decision-making, though he was surprised at the amount of turn so early in the match. At the same time, he also explained his reasoning for not bowling out R Ashwin despite the trouble caused by Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja early in the match.”Initially we never thought it would turn so much. Reading the wicket, I thought there was a bit of moisture because they had watered the wicket yesterday and I don’t think they got enough sun today. The last time when I saw the wicket was before the start of the game, and then it was quite damp. And even when you roll the wicket, the top surface may look a bit good, but it’s more a cosmetic thing, because underneath there was a lot of moisture.”I feel it was because of the moisture that the spinners were getting a lot of turn. Even the ones that were bowling it quite hard, if you hit the seam you can turn the ball, and that’s what Jadeja and Ashwin did. The Pakistan batsmen, they are good players of spin bowling, and later on I felt, there was a chance, if I had given it to Ashwin they could have gone after him. I’m not saying he can’t deal with it, but I went for the safer option.”While Dhoni said he is proud of India’s historic unbeaten record against Pakistan in World Cups and World T20s, he said it’s not something they take for granted.”There is also a reality that one day we will lose – whether it is today or in ten years or 20 years or 50 years. There is no such thing that you will always keep winning. Also, our team has evolved a lot, and somehow in ICC events our performances have been good of late, whether it’s the last Champions Trophy or the World Cup. We have given pretty good performances, so that also plays a role. I feel we have played good cricket, and that’s the reason.”

England won't come close to us in Ashes – Smith

Steven Smith and Shane Watson are convinced Australia are on course to retain the Ashes in England later in the summer. Speaking exclusively to ESPNcricinfo, Smith said he doesn’t think England will “come close” to challenging the Australian team on current form, while Watson said there is “huge hunger” within the squad to end the sequence of three consecutive Ashes series defeats in England of 2005, 2009 & 2013.”We’ve got a very strong squad that’s going over to England,” Watson said. “We’ve got good depth and the best part is everyone is in nearly career-best form right now which is most important as well. There is a huge hunger within the group because we know that we haven’t won in England for the last three series. I’ve been involved in two of those. There’s a big burning desire to be involved in an Ashes winning campaign in England as well. We’re as well prepared as we can be within our group. I’m incredibly excited about what’s on the horizon with the Ashes and everyone else is as well.””I can’t wait to get over there and play another Ashes against England in their conditions after beating them so convincingly in Australia,” Smith said. “It’s going to be nice to go in their backyard. If we continue to play the way we have been playing over the last 12-18 months, I don’t think that they’ll come close to us to be honest.”Smith is widely expected to be formally named Australia’s one-day captain after Michael Clarke decided to retire after the World Cup. Smith is also tipped to take over the reigns of the Test team when Clarke decides to hang his boots. While Watson endorsed the 25-year old for the job whole-heartedly, quipping Cricket Australia would be “crazy” to not give him the job, Smith was understandably not as forthcoming.”It’s not my job to decide who is going to be the captain in the future,” Smith said. “I’ve had some good experiences and really enjoyed captaining the team in Michael’s absence in the summer against India. It was a great learning experience for me to have senior players like Shane and Brad Haddin around the group to bounce ideas off. Shane was very supportive throughout the home series and to have him and Hadds next to me while I was standing at second slip and to have that wealth of experience beside me and to bounce ideas off them was really beneficial for me at the start and I really enjoyed the experience of captaining Australia.”Watson and Smith are currently in India as part of the Rajasthan Royals squad in the ongoing IPL. The 2008 champions made a strong start to their campaign, winning their first five matches although they lost their last two. Smith believes that Rajasthan are “yet to play their best cricket” despite having started the tournament well and expects the team to reach peak capacity come the home stretch of the tournament.Watson, who was Man of the Series in the first edition of the IPL in 2008 and played a key role in Royals’ unexpected run to the title, credits the “culture” built at the franchise over the years for them being able to punch above their weight and challenge teams that can boast of more marquee players. He thinks the current squad has the depth to be strong contenders this season again.”Some of the other teams spend all their salary caps but in the end it’s part of the evolution of our group to give an opportunity to people, like myself in the first year, to impress and get those guys in and around our group because we know they really want to get the best out of themselves and also for the team,” Watson said. “We had a good year a couple of years ago [2013] when we made the Champions League and this year it feels very special as well with the group we’ve got around and the depth in our squad has been as good as it ever has been.”

Suman 93 powers Hyderabad win

A round-up of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches played on March 26, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-2015 South ZoneTirumalasetti Suman’s 93 off 61 balls and Pragyan Ojha’s four-for set up Hyderabad’s 82-run win over Andhra in Kochi. After Hyderabad were put in to bat, Suman, who scored 82 against Tamil Nadu in the last game, and Danny Dereck Prince whipped up 45 runs in 5.1 overs before the latter was bowled by seamer Bandaru Ayyappa, who went on to take two more wickets. Suman then added 88 runs in 8.2 overs for the third wicket with Tanmay Agarwal, who made 30 off 22 balls. By the time Suman was dismissed in the 19th over, he had slammed 11 fours and five sixes.Andhra began poorly in their reply, as M Ravikiran sent back Prasanth Kumar and captain Mohammad Kaif off consecutive deliveries. Only three batsmen reached double figures, as Ojha ran through the middle order.Cameos from Mayank Agarwal (36), Karun Nair (30) and Shreyas Gopal (23*) helped Karnataka complete a four-wicket win over Goa in Kochi.Set 114 to win, Karnataka, despite losing R Samarth and captain Manish Pandey early in the piece, found their voice through Agarwal and Nair who put on 37 runs. After Agarwal, who stuck four fours and two sixes in his 28-ball innings, was caught behind off Robin D’Souza, Nair took his team closer to the target in Gopal’s company. There was a slight wobble after off-spinner Amit Yadav removed Nair and Kranthi Kumar in the space of two balls, but Gopal stayed till the end to ensure Karnataka crossed the line with two overs to spare.Karnataka had earlier inserted Goa, who slumped to 27 for 5. Only Darshan Misal, who scored 41 off 34 balls, contributed substantially. D’Souza, Sher Yadav and Amit Yadav chipped in towards the end to take Goa past 100. Seamer David Mathias, playing his second game, was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.Tamil Nadu edged Kerala by two wickets with four balls to spare after overcoming a shaky start in Kochi.Chasing 126, Tamil Nadu kept losing wickets at regular intervals, and were in considerable trouble when H Gopinath, who top-scored with 32, was the fifth man to exit with the score on 60. Shahrukh Khan departed soon after, and then Malolan Rangarajan and R Sathish added 42 runs to take them close to their target.Earlier, put into bat, Kerala’s start was in contrast to their opponents’, as sizeable scores from Sanju Samson and Raiphi Vincent Gomez put them on course for a good total. But, from 78 for 2 in 11 overs, they scored only 47 more runs, as Tamil Nadu pulled things back by taking wickets in quick succession. Aswin Crist prised out three scalps, including those of Gomez and captain Sachin Baby. North ZoneManan Vohra’s 55-ball 77 powered Punjab to a 94-run victory over Jammu & Kashmir at the Feroz Shah Kotla. After J&K elected to bowl, Vohra and Jaskaranveer Singh, who hit 29 off 18 balls, gave Punjab a quick start. After Jaskaranveer’s dismissal, Vohra added 56 runs with Mandeep Singh, whose contribution was only 8. Then, towards the end, Gurkeerat Singh notched up a 14-ball 26 to drive Punjab to 176.J&K’s reply never gained any momentum, with only captain Parvez Rasool managing to pass 25. Siddarth Kaul claimed three wickets, as J&K were bowled out for 82 in 18.2 overs.Medium-pacer Deepak Punia took 6 for 14 to rein in Haryana’s chase and leave them 15 runs short of Services’ total of 141. Chasing 142, Haryana stumbled to 40 for 3 in the seventh over, with Punia accounting for all three wickets. Himanshu Rana and Sachin Rana steadied the chase with a 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket but the latter’s wicket allowed Services to forge a comeback with quick wickets. Punia contributed with another double-wicket over, getting rid of Harshal Patel and top-scorer Himanshu Rana and Haryana were eventually limited to 126 for 8. Earlier, Pratik Desai’s 43 and Yashpal Singh’s 41 helped Services tide over the low scores of the top and middle order to post 141 for 6.Pankaj Jaiswal’s four-wicket haul gave Himachal Pradesh their third win on the trot, as they defeated Delhi by 19 runs at the Feroz Shah Kotla.Opting to bat, Himachal Pradesh made 154, Raghav Dhawan (33) and Paras Dogra, who smashed a 19-ball 34, being the major contributors. Left-arm spinner Manan Sharma claimed three wickets.Delhi didn’t get off to the best of starts with openers Unmukt Chand and Gautam Gambhir, who faced 15 balls for six runs, dismissed inside the Powerplay. Milind Kumar , scoring 52 off 39 balls, and Nitin Rana (32 off 20) rebuilt the innings with a 48-run stand. Despite losing Rana in the 11th over, Milind kept his team in the hunt. But Pawan Negi’s dismissal in the 17th over – at which point Delhi needed 32 off 21 deliveries – triggered a terminal slide, as four more wickets fell in the space of three overs to deny the home side victory.Jaiswal was well supported by Rishi Dhawan and Akshay Chauhan, who claimed two wickets apiece, as Himachal extended their unbeaten streak. East ZoneOffspinner Pratik Das’ maiden five-for in only his second Twenty20 game, bundled Assam out for 110 to set up an 82-run win for Odisha. Defending a total of 192 for 4, Odisha were given early wickets by the medium-pace pair of Suryakant Pradhan and Deepak Behera. Das got the key breakthroughs, dismissing top-scorer Pallavkumar Das and Swarupam Purkayastha in the eighth over. He then took three wickets in five balls to leave Assam at 78 for 8 and they lasted only four overs before being bowled out for 110. Odisha’s formidable total was built on brisk innings from Govinda Podder (47 from 29 balls) and Anurag Sarangi (43 off 30). Arabindh Singh smashed five fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 18-ball 34 to boost the innings at the end.Tripura tripped up badly in a chase of 153 – they finished 147 for 3 after 20 overs, five runs short of the target set by Jharkhand in Cuttack.Rakesh Solanki had hammered a 58-ball 76 at the top of the order to ensure Tripura were favourites, until the second ball of the final over when he was run out. The equation then became 10 off four balls. Kaushal Acharjee and Manisankar Murasingh could only manage four.Jharkhand would feel they broke out of jail. Their batting was propped up by brisk thirties from Saurabh Tiwary (35), Ishank Jaggi (30) and Virat Singh (37), and only two of their bowlers managed to pick up wickets – Sarfaraz Ashraf with 1 for 27 and Kaushal Singh with 1 for 22 – but four of them – Rituraj Singh and Shahbaz Nadeem joining the two above – managed an economy rate of 7.5 or under. West ZoneA tight spell from Mehul Patel, during which he picked up the wickets of both Baroda openers, sent Gujarat on their way to a five-wicket win at the MCA Stadium. Coming on as first change, Mehul reduced Baroda to 26 for 2 in the sixth over, and they never really recovered from that position, with Aditya Waghmode’s run-a-ball 43 the only substantial score in their eventual total of 116 for 7.Gujarat lost their openers within the first five overs, with Rishi Arothe dismissing both of them, but Rujul Bhatt’s unbeaten 48-ball 40 ensured there weren’t too many hiccups after that, as they reached their target with an over left to play.Sheldon Jackson’s half-century and useful hands from captain Jaydev Shah (39), Chirag Jani (36* off 18 balls) and Cheteshwar Pujara (28) gave Saurashtra their second straight victory, a 61-run win over Mumbai in Pune.Jackson’s 37-ball 53, comprising five fours and three sixes, was largely instrumental in Saurashtra finishing with 177 after electing to bat. While three of Mumbai’s bowlers were hit for more than 11 runs an over, 15-year-old Sidak Singh, playing his second game, gave away only 15 runs in his four overs.Mumbai’s chase never really took off, and they ended with 116 for 9 in 20 overs, Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 37 being the lone high point. Arpit Vasavada and Dharmendrasingh Jadeja bowled economically to claim two wickets apiece.
