Celtic: Tom Rogic available against Hearts

Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic looks set to return from injury when the Hoops take on Hearts at Parkhead on Thursday night, as per The Herald.

The Lowdown: Without Rogic…

The Australian has missed the last six games after suffering a hamstring injury against Hibernian at the end of October.

The 28-year-old, hailed as ‘brilliant’ by Ange Postecoglou, was a regular in the team prior to his muscle issue, with the manager using the likes of Nir Bitton and James McCarthy alongside Callum McGregor and David Turnbull in Rogic’s absence.

However, it now seems as if the Aussie is set to be available for selection once again, providing Postecoglou with a timely injury boost.

The Latest: Rogic to return

The Herald provided an injury update on Wednesday ahead of Celtic’s meeting with Hearts tonight. They suggested that both Rogic and Bitton will return to the squad after revering from their respective knocks.

However, the report added that Carl Starfelt and Giorgos Giakoumakis are both still sidelined with their hamstring and knee issues.

The Verdict: Good news…

The Hoops have an extremely busy month ahead with nine fixtures in all competitions, so having strength in depth may well be crucial to enjoying a positive December.

On that basis, having a regular in Rogic back and ready to go is a huge boost to bolster Postecoglou’s midfield options.

His displays have also improved under the 56-year-old, averaging more key passes per game and recording a better WhoScored average match rating when compared to last season, so hopefully he can pick up where he left off when he returns.

Promotion challengers frustrated

A round-up of the latest Championship action with promotion and relegation to still be decided, but the weather has so far played the main role

Cricinfo staff15-Sep-2009Division TwoDerbyshire’s promotion push was stalled by the weather at Uxbridge as rain allowed only 22.2 overs on the opening day against Middlesex. Chris Rogers and Wayne Madsen formed a solid opening stand before Rogers was caught behind off Tim Murtagh. Play was called off at 4pm with Madsen unbeaten on 26 and Garry Park on 9. Middlesex had been forced to make a change to their line-up after Steven Finn picked up a knee strain in the Pro40 on Sunday and was replaced by David Burton. No play was possible in the crunch promotion clash between second-placed Northamptonshire and third-placed Essex at Chelmsford. Essex need a win to keep the pressure on their opponents going into the final round of matches, but the heavy rain that arrived across the South East meant a frustrating day.Kent have already secured promotion but were unable to make further strides towards the Division Two title as rain washed out play against Leicestershire at Canterbury.Division OneMichael Di Venuto continued his fine form as he reached 61 against Hampshire, but rain limited the action to 29 overs as Durham aim to continue their Championship-winning season in style at The Rose Bowl. In the previous match, where Durham wrapped up the title against Nottinghamshire, Di Venuto and Kyle Coetzer added a record 314 for the first wicket and started well again as they put on 73. Danny Briggs, the 18-year-old left-arm spinner, who has been named in the England Under-19 squad to tour Bangladesh, was introduced in the eighth over and later made the breakthrough when he bowled Coetzer.

Swann not surprised by Cardiff belter

As Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting extended their second-wicket stand through to the end of the second day’s play, the most relieved men in Cardiff were not the Australian bowlers whose own mixed efforts with the ball had been put very firmly into context, nor the pockets of Fanatics around the ground, who arrived in England a shade apprehensive about their team’s Ashes prospects, but finished the day feeling as though normal service had never been interrupted.Rather, it was the Glamorgan CCC hierarchy, most particularly the chairman, Paul Russell, who can now look forward to hosting a full five days of refund-free Ashes cricket, when the hyped-up fears prior to the contest had been of a three-day minefield. For that, the gratitude must go to the newly installed groundsman, Keith Exton, who put aside that early-season scare when Glamorgan were docked two points in the FP Trophy for an excessively turning track, and instead unfurled a belter.Exton’s expertise didn’t come as much of a surprise to Graeme Swann, however, who at the height of the pitch furore predicted to Cricinfo that the Test track would turn out very different in character to that edge-of-the-square anomaly. And so it proved on a day of arduous toil for England’s bowlers, although by seeping their runs at less than three an over, Swann and Monty Panesar did maintain some measure of control throughout the Ponting-Katich alliance. With a 186-run advantage still on their side, Swann felt that England’s disappointing day was by no means disastrous.”This morning we talked about getting momentum, but 249 for 1 doesn’t speak very highly of the way we bowled, in fact it sums up the way we bowled,” said Swann. “We didn’t put the ball in the right place often enough. We can whinge and moan about the ball going soft, and the wicket being flat, and Katich not being given out lbw off me when he was plumb. But that’s the game, it’s the nature of the beast. We’re disappointed to be in this position, but we’ve still got a nigh-on-200 run lead.”Aside from that Katich let-off on 56, England scarcely created a chance worthy of the name, but Swann refused to be discouraged by the lack of assistance from the track. “It turned about as much as I expected,” he said. “We were reading it was going to turn square, but I’ve played here before, I know the odd ball turns but the majority doesn’t, so got to work hard for your wickets.”It will turn more as the game goes on, but it’s not going to speed up, I know that for a fact,” he said. “I think it’s played a lot better than most people thought, and there’s been more bounce than some people expected, but it’s a good wicket to bat on because of that lack of pace. There’s no spitting turn, except out of the footholds, so I might ask Mitchell Johnson [the left-armer] to rough it up in the morning.”Nevertheless, for England it was an anticlimactic day in the field, not least because of the twin psychological boosts they were given in a wildly entertaining first hour and a half of the day. Swann was central to the performance even then, clobbering an unbridled 47 not out from 40 balls, as England’s last three wickets added 99 precious runs in 16.5 overs.”I am intent on enjoying myself when I bat, because it’s the best thing in cricket,” said Swann. “No-one wants to be a bowler as a kid because it’s rubbish, so whenever I do get the chance to bat I go out and play with a smile on my face, and if it’s in my half I try to hit it as hard as I can. It’s a simple tactic, and today it came off nicely, and I was having the time of my life.”First in tandem with James Anderson, and then with Panesar “batting like Yuvraj Singh”, Swann took particular delight in tormenting his opposite number, Nathan Hauritz, whose sharp spin from middle to leg was an encouraging sign for an England side blessed with the supposedly superior spinners. But somehow, the promised purchase just did not come. England squandered the new ball by offering Phillip Hughes too much width, and then Swann and Panesar – though tidy – found their ambitions thwarted throughout.”Before lunch, maybe we got a bit hyped up because of the way we batted,” said Swann. “Hauritz got a few off the straight to turn down the leg side, and a couple out of the rough as well, so we got a bit of false hope. We probably expected to run up and get wickets every ball. We tried our heart out and put a lot into it, but I can remember only half a dozen balls turning and beating the outside edge. It’s disappointing, but it’s just one of those things.”The biggest disappointment, however, is undoubtedly the one that comes with hindsight. Ten of England’s eleven batsmen reached double figures, yet nobody exceeded Kevin Pietersen’s 69 – and there was never any danger that Katich or Ponting would paddle a sweep onto their helmet and into the hands of short leg. A single massive innings, of the type that both Australians are in the position to produce tomorrow, could have turned a handy but unfulfilling 435 into an impregnable 600-plus statement.”If you look down our scorecard I think everyone got in but didn’t go on,” agreed Swann. “Partly that was due to the first day of the Ashes, the big occasion probably got to us, but at end of the day our score was in the balance, and we realised we had to have a good morning to get back in, and get the runs that that wicket deserves. A couple of our guys realised they should have gone on and got hundreds, we’re a very honest dressing-room and very candid, but our only hundred that was truly denied was mine, because I ran out of partners.”Joking aside, Swann realises that there are still three days of serious competition to come, and he’s still optimistic of a turnaround in fortunes. To that end, he still believes that England’s spin twins will play the part for which they were selected, with Panesar coming to the fore as the game wears on.”Monty enjoyed himself and I thought he bowled well, and as the game goes on and he gets more overs, he’ll bowl better and better,” said Swann. “The reason we talk a lot on the field is that we are a partnership, and we try to bowl as a partnership. I field at mid-on to talk to him, and he fields at mid-on to me to keep smiling at me. That’s the way we work.”On the field it’s just tough cricket with the bowlers all finding you’ve really got to work to get your wickets, but we’re looking forward to getting rid of this ball, throwing it in the river, and getting a new one in their hands.”

No false steps with semis at stake

What could have been a potential quarter-final clash will be of less importance now that Punjab’s defeat against Chennai has made things easier for the other Southern Indian teams

What could have been a potential quarter-final clash will perhaps be of less importance now that Kings XI Punjab’s defeat against Chennai Super Kings has made things easier for the other Southern Indian teams. Bangalore and Deccan both have a better run-rate than Punjab and should join last year’s semi-finalists Delhi and Chennai in the knock-out phase unless one of them loses badly today. The turnaround for the bottom-placed teams from last season has been remarkable. Today’s game provides the sides an opportunity to lock in their playing XI ahead of the semi-finals. While the foreign players in the Bangalore squad have been crucial to the team’s successes, it is the Indian contingent, barring Anil Kumble, that needs to stand up and be counted. Praveen Kumar’s performance during the win in the last match against Delhi Daredevils is just the inspiration that the domestic players need. Two successive last-ball finishes may have fatigued Deccan but expect no sympathy as they face their southern compatriots. Adam Gilchrist, who like Kumble, has handled the captaincy with aplomb, will not want to let the slightest chance go abegging. Deccan will look to avoid meeting top-of-the-table Delhi in the semis, having lost on both occasions this season.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Bangalore Royal Challengers: WWWLL
The opening partnership continues to haunt coach Ray Jennings. With Jesse Ryder not having made the most of his opportunities and Robin Uthappa proving a failure at the top, time and options may well be running out for Bangalore if they are to keep their three-match winning streak going.Deccan Chargers: LWLWL
Expect Adam Gilchrist to be back in top gear after a minor blip and along with fellow-Australian Andrew Symonds, provide stability to the side. Rohit Sharma will look to continue his good form, and pile on the runs after flawless cameos against Kolkata and Punjab.Watch out forAnil Kumble v Rohit Sharma/Adam Gilchrist: The wily Kumble has been shouldering most of the bowling for Bangalore and will no doubt look forward to matching his craft and guile against two of the most destructive batsmen in the IPL. Gilchrist gave in to temptation last time and was undone by Ramesh Powar; he will need to be on his guard if Deccan are to get off to a flier this time.Team newsExpect a new opening combination as Bangalore look to iron out the glitches ahead of the knockout phase, with the in-form Ross Taylor likely to assist Kallis, and Uthappa featuring lower down. Vinay Kumar may be back, replacing Manish Pandey, as they look to add more bite to their bowling.Royal Challengers Bangalore: (probable) 1 Ross Taylor, 2 Jacques Kallis, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Robin Uthappa, 5 Virat Kohli, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Roelof van der Merwe, 8 B Akhil, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 R Vinay Kumar, 11 Anil Kumble (capt).Deccan would want to give their best XI a dummy run before the next few matches. Dwayne Smith may again be rested with Gibbs given another chance for a long overdue big score. Picking Chaminda Vaas ahead of Ryan Harris may give them the extra batting option. Harmeet Singh may take Jaskaran Singh’s place from the last match.Deccan: (probable) 1 Adam Gilchrist (capt & wk), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 T Suman, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Andrew Symonds, 6 Venugopal Rao, 7 D Ravi Teja, 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 RP Singh, 10 Pragyan Ojha, 11 Jaskaran Singh/Harmeet Singh.Stats and triviaWith 24 sixes, Gilchrist has cleared the boundary the most times this IPLNot a statistic to be proud of: Bangalore jointly hold the record for the heaviest defeat (in terms of runs) with Kolkata – the 92-run defeat came against Chennai in Port ElizabethRP Singh, the holder of the purple cap with 19 wickets, has the chance to break free of his nearest competitor, Delhi’s Ashish Nehra (18)Head-to-head recordGilchrist and Rohit’s power-hitting ensured Deccan romped to a 24-run win earlier this season, in Cape Town. Woakes takes out West Indian top order

ScorecardChris Woakes is congratulated on another West Indian wicket•Getty Images

At a time when young English quick bowlers are making the headlines, Chris Woakes enhanced his claims for higher honours as he starred for the England Lions by taking out the West Indian top order on a rain-hit opening day at Derby.Woakes ended with the fine figures of 4 for 26 as the tourists struggled to 76 for 4 in the 28 allowed by the weather. Play had started on time, but the opening passage of action lasted just 3.1 overs however that was still enough time for Woakes to make his mark. Lendl Simmons was drawn into a loose push which sent an edge through to Tim Ambrose for what was the first of three all-Warwickshire dismissals.Rain prevented further play until well into the final session, but the lengthy stoppage hadn’t effected Woakes who soon had Devon Smith caught behind. That was quickly followed by Denesh Ramdin’s wicket as the stand-in captain was caught by Ian Bell. However, Woakes’ most notable scalp was still to follow when he removed a well-set Ramnaresh Sarwan for 31 with Samit Patel taking the catch as the West Indians staggered to 55 for 4.Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash managed to resist until bad light brought an early close, but it was another troubling day for the West Indian top order – following their poor display against Essex, with the opening Test less than a week away.

Crystal Palace linked with Joe Aribo

Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo as Patrick Vieira looks to add further reinforcements to his first team squad at Selhurst Park.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, the Eagles are interested in securing the 25-year-old’s signature over the coming months after impressing during his time in Scottish football.

The report stated: “An industry source has told Football Insider that Aribo is on Palace’s radar going into next year and his situation at Ibrox will be closely monitored.”

Aribo’s current contract at Ibrox expires in the summer of 2023, so the upcoming January window may be the last opportunity for Rangers to secure a high price for the versatile forward.

Crystal Palace fans will be buzzing

After joining the Glasgow giants on a free transfer following his departure from Charlton Athletic back in 2019, Aribo has established himself as one of the Scottish Premiership’s most exciting attacking talents.

In 106 appearances for Rangers, the Nigeria international has scored 19 goals and provided a further 17 assists for his teammates, playing a pivotal part in the club’s league triumph last season.

His exploits at club level have also earned him seven caps for his national side and have led to several impressed onlookers lauding his ability on the pitch, with former Rangers player Steven Thomson hailing him as “phenomenal”.

Therefore, Palace fans will surely be buzzing to learn that the club’s hierarchy are reportedly tracking the £5.85m-rated gem ahead of a potential move.

Vieira brought in Conor Gallagher and Will Hughes to begin the overhaul of his engine room over the summer, and the former has already made a big impression in south London.

However, Gallagher is only on a season-long loan from Premier League rivals Chelsea, so the French tactician is already sensibly planning ahead for the 21-year-old’s inevitable exit.

During his time north of the border, Aribo has become renowned for his dribbling skills and ability to pick out a pass, as well as being comfortable sticking a foot in and dispossessing opponents, all traits in which Gallagher excels.

It remains to be seen whether the Eagles make a formal offer for Aribo, but chairman Steve Parish must sanction a swoop for the African, duly providing Vieira with the tools he needs to keep making progress at the Selhurst Park helm.

Antigua-based billionaire Allen Stanford has been charged with fraud by US authorities according to the Reuters agency. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said that it was “alleging a fraud of shocking magnitude”.Linda Chatman Thomsen, director of the SEC’s division of enforcement, said: “As we allege in our complaint, Stanford and the close circle of family and friends with whom he runs his businesses perpetrated a massive fraud based on false promises and fabricated historical return data to prey on investors. We are moving quickly and decisively in this enforcement action to stop this fraudulent conduct and preserve assets for investors.”Rose Romero, regional director of the SEC’s Fort Worth regional office, added: “We are alleging a fraud of shocking magnitude that has spread its tentacles throughout the world.”A US district judge granted the SEC’s request to impose a temporary restraining order on the Stanford operations and to freeze the defendants’ assets, and appoint a receiver to marshal those assets.Federal agents were also reported to have entered the Houston office of Stanford Financial Group, according to a Reuters eyewitness. In Antigua, the country’s prime minister, Baldwin Spencer, said the case had “profound, serious implications” for Antigua and Barbuda and its fallout threatens “catastrophic and immediate consequences”. The government, he said, was putting in place a contingency plan and there was no need to panic.

‘We are alleging a fraud of shocking magnitude that has spread its tentacles throughout the world’ Rose Romero, regional director of the SEC’s Fort Worth regional office

Earlier on Tuesday the SEC had filed a complaint in federal court in Dallas accusing Stanford, the head of the Stanford Financial Group, of fraud in the sale of about US$8 billion of high-yielding certificates of deposit held in the firm’s bank in Antigua. James M. Davis, a director and chief financial officer of Stanford Group, was also arrested. The SEC said it could not account for the US$8 billion in assets that were housed in the Antigua bank after issuing subpoenas for bank records and to various witnesses. Most of those subpoenaed, including Davis and Stanford, failed to testify or produce documents relating to the assets. The group as a whole has 30,000 clients and investments totalling around US$50 billion. The SEC went on to describe claims by the bank that it paid “significantly” higher returns on its CDs because of the high quality of its investments as “improbable, if not impossible”.The SEC’s investigation into Stanford Financial Group comes at a time it is under considerable pressure inside the USA for its inaction regarding the multi-billion Bernard L. Madoff case.

Johnson must unleash Leon Dajaku v Pompey

Sunderland will be looking to maintain their place at the top of the League One table as they travel to face Portsmouth on Saturday.

Danny Cowley’s team are 12th in the table and 10 points behind the Wearsiders, having gone eight games without a win in all competitions. The Black Cats, meanwhile, are on an eight-match unbeaten run and attempting to make it nine at Fratton Park, winning their last match 5-0 against Cheltenham.

Lee Johnson may look to freshen his XI up to take on Portsmouth and one player he must unleash today is German winger Leon Dajaku.

The summer signing from Union Berlin is yet to make a start for Sunderland in League One and this match could be a great opportunity for him to be thrown in. Johnson must give him the chance to show what he can do from the start by dropping Aiden O’Brien and starting Dajaku out wide against Pompey.

Earlier this summer, the manager lauded the 20-year-old’s potential and outlined the qualities he has in his locker.

He said: “Leon is a really interesting player – he’s a top prospect with good ability, agility and quality – so we are looking forward to adding him to the squad and working with him. He’s a hungry player that has shown a strong attitude and desire to come to Sunderland and grow with us, which is exactly what we want.”

Dajaku displayed some of his quality off the bench in the rout against Cheltenham. As per SofaScore, in 29 minutes on the pitch, he scored one goal, created one chance and had 23 touches of the ball. O’Brien, on the other hand, played 90 minutes and failed to register a goal or assist, with one key pass and 50 touches.

The former Bayern Munich man has previously proven his ability at a similar level. In the third tier of German football, Dajaku managed seven goals and five assists in 43 games. This shows that he has the potential to be a game-changer for Johnson’s side, with his strike against Cheltenham giving a glimpse into what he is capable of producing.

Therefore, Johnson should axe O’Brien from the XI in order to start Dajaku out wide against Pompey. The German could add a goal threat from out wide whilst also being able to create chances, and there would be the added motivation to perform as it would be his full League One debut.

The dynamo could then secure his place in the team on a regular basis if he is able to put in an impressive display and then maintain consistency throughout the rest of the season.

In other news: Johnson sheds light on deal for £450k-rated “handful”, Sunderland fans will be buzzing

Lee Johnson must unleash Nathan Broadhead

Lee Johnson’s Sunderland head into Saturday’s League One fixture at the Stadium of Light in fine form, having picked up 16 points from their opening seven fixtures of the season, as well as securing their passage to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in midweek.

In this cup fixture, despite ringing the changes to his starting XI, Johnson saw his team put in a dominant performance in a 2-0 victory over League One leaders Wigan Athletic, with a number of the Black Cats’ fringe players turning in very impressive displays.

One such man was 23-year-old Everton loanee Nathan Broadhead, with the centre-forward scoring one goal, making two key passes, winning two tackles, completing two dribbles and winning five duels over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch.

These returns saw the £1.9k-per-week man receive a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.4, ranking him as the third-best player to feature in the match.

The performance of the player who David Unsworth dubbed a “terrific” talent is sure to have given Johnson something of a selection headache ahead of the visit of Bolton Wanderers this afternoon, as Broadhead’s fellow centre-forward Ross Stewart has also been in remarkable form so far this season.

Indeed, over his seven League One appearances this term, the 25-year-old has scored five goals and averaged a SofaScore match rating of 7.36, ranking him as the Black Cats’ best performer in the third tier.

As such, it would appear unlikely that Broadhead will replace Stewart as the Mackems’ lone striker against the Trotters. However, with the £450k-rated youngster stating that he is more than capable of operating from the left wing, there would appear to be a way for Johnson to unleash the 23-year-old alongside Stewart in Sunderland’s attacking line up – a move which would likely strike fear into the Bolton defence.
