Wolves must avoid disaster on Ait Nouri

Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back Rayan Ait Nouri is attracting increasing interest ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by French media outlet Jeunes Footeux (via Sport Witness), who claim that both Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the 20-year-old Wolves defender ahead of a potential move in the winter market.

The report goes on to state that an offer of somewhere in the region of €25-30m (£21-26m) would be required for Jeff Shi to consider the proposal, while Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira is believed to have already informed his transfer team at Selhurst Park that he wants to land the France U21 international.

Shi must avoid disaster with Ait Nouri

Considering the sheer amount of potential that Ait Nouri quite clearly possesses, it is undeniable that losing the services of the left-back just six months after signing the 20-year-old would be something of a disaster for Jeff Shi and Wolves, even if it is for a considerable profit.

Indeed, since being handed his first Premier League start of the season against Leeds United back in October, the £16.2m-rated man has been in extremely impressive form for Bruno Lage’s side, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average 0.9 key passes and taking 0.8 shots per game.

The player who Liam Kenn dubbed a “superb” talent has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.6 interceptions, 3.9 tackles – the most of any player in the top flight – 0.9 clearances and winning a whopping 7.4 duels per game.

These returns have seen the £33k-per-week youngster average a SofaScore match rating of 6.97, ranking him as Wolves’ eighth-best performer in the league so far this season.

Couple that with Jonny and Marcal’s repeated injury problems and losing the man who Keen claimed “gets the crowd on their feet” in January would undoubtedly come as a major blow to Lage’s hopes of securing European football at Molineux next season – both of which are outcomes that would leave fans of the club gutted.

Forest fans hammer Zinckernagel

Taking to Twitter, these Nottingham Forest fans were less than impressed with the performance of midfielder Philip Zinckernagel as their side snatched a last gasp 2-1 victory away to Bristol City last night.

Looking to gather momentum under new boss Steve Cooper, Forest took on City yesterday evening in what ended up being a thrilling encounter.

The Reds sealed a last second victory to keep some pace with the Championship play-off chasers and it is super substitute Lyle Taylor who deserves the acclaim.

Coming on for Lewis Grabban with just under 10 minutes remaining, the 31-year-old international buried a brace in added time to nick all three points after Forest spent much of the game trying to breakthrough.

Before this dramatic finish, one man who certainly didn’t help Cooper’s side on the night was Zinckernagel – and it is clear to see why some fans were less than impressed.

According to SofaScore, before he was hauled off with under 15 minutes to go, the attacker completed just two out of six take-ons, lost the overwhelming majority of his ground duels and gave possession away a massive 26 times in total.

Taking this into account, Forest fans voiced their criticism on social media – find all of their verdicts down below.

Rangers ace Patterson assists Dykes

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left gushing over some footage which has emerged of Nathan Patterson’s assist for Scotland this week.

As shared by the official Twitter page of the Ibrox faithful, the right-back received the ball on the wing while on international duty, putting in a beautiful cross which was met by Lyndon Dykes to give them a 1-0 win late on away at the Faroe Islands in their FIFA World Cup qualifying game on Tuesday night.

At just 19 years of age, Patterson is already showing in the senior team what he is capable of, and assists like these will certainly yield him more opportunities under Steve Clarke – whether or not he can budge out James Tavernier at club level is a different matter.

Nonetheless, it was a nice moment not just for Scottish supporters, but for the Light Blues as well.

By jove, it's a six from England

Comeback of the dayOn Friday afternoon he had merely been rested. Come Saturday morning, as the Netherlands post-mortem kicked in, his Achilles problem had become so serious his participation in the Ashes was under threat. Somewhere between those two extremes lies the truth about Kevin Pietersen’s hurty heel, but by God England were grateful to have him back tonight. For a man who professes to being “not very good at Twenty20”, Pietersen packed a mean punch as he provided impetus to England’s survival bid with a 31-ball half-century, including a drilled six over long-off that rivalled even the power that Chris Gayle brought to this ground on Saturday. Where he led, his team-mates followed, as England atoned for their Dutch disaster with admirable purpose.Shot of the dayIt was nothing special by the standards of the striking that we’ve seen at The Oval in the past 24 hours – nothing more than a flat pull from Luke Wright that scudded over midwicket. But in the context of a flatlining campaign it meant so, so much. After 143 deliveries, one humiliating defeat, and acres of abusive newsprint, England had finally managed to hit their first six of the World Twenty20. By the end of their innings they had cleared the ropes on five subsequent occasions, but as any pimply youth will tell you, the first time is always the most special.Shot of the day Mk 2It’s not like Pakistan to hold back from aerial shots, but a combination of effective English bowling and their own peculiar reticence meant we had to wait until the 17th over of the innings for their first blow over the ropes. Misbah-ul-Haq was the man to do the business, an abrupt wallop up and over long-on that put an unwarranted dent in Wright’s excellent figures. Sadly for Misbah – and Pakistan – the fun did not endure. He was clumsily dropped at point off the next ball by Ravi Bopara, and at the start of the next over he picked out Eoin Morgan at mid-on while attempting a repeat of that blow.Strangler of the dayAt Lord’s on Friday, Adil Rashid had proved powerless to halt the Dutch surge, but this time around, on a wicket entering its eighth innings in two days, he had the stage to show his class and he did not disappoint. With admirable control, and ably assisted by Wright and Graeme Swann, Rashid sent down 24 deliveries between the sixth and 14th overs at exactly a run a ball, and he did not concede a boundary until the start of his third over. By the time he completed his spell, Pakistan needed the small matter of 15.50 runs per over, and the game was already in the bag. It was an impressive comeback from a man who might have felt a touch traumatised by his debut.Bowler of the dayTalking of trauma, Stuart Broad has had his fill of it at World Twenty20s. The man who was smacked for six sixes at Durban in 2007 suffered an even greater humiliation against the Dutch, when his brilliant final over was rendered irrelevant by the woefulness of his own fielding. Happily for England, he didn’t dwell on that disaster, and returned with renewed aggression. His three overs went for 17 runs and accounted for three Pakistan wickets, including two in two balls as Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt imploded at the top end of the run-chase.Nutmeg of the dayPakistan spilled four catches in a sloppy fielding performance, most of them ludicrously simple. But their most embarrassing lapse came from Umar Gul at third man, who managed to let the ball trickle through his defences to hoots of derision from a deafeningly excited Oval crowd. An exuberant hoick from Wright spun off a thick edge, bounced once, twice, three times in front of Gul, then hopped like a fluffy bunny rabbit straight through the hole in his long barrier. Umar knelt in contemplation for a moment, stroking his chin like Rodin’s Thinker, then turned sheepishly to retrieve the ball from the rope, and face a barrage of well-earned abuse.Debut of the dayAs a lithe and whippy left-armer, the 17-year-old Mohammad Aamer has an awful lot of hype to live up to. Comparisons with the great Wasim Akram aren’t exactly helpful for a youngster making his way in the game, and yet, Aamer still managed to make a favourable first impression when he removed England’s man of the moment, Ravi Bopara, with his second delivery in international cricket. Granted it was a bit short and wide, but there was enough pace on the ball for Bopara’s loose carve to take an edge, and Shoaib Malik at backward point leapt with vigour to pouch a brilliant full-stretch catch.

Southampton: Fans react to James Ward-Prowse call up

Southampton confirmed on Tuesday that club captain James Ward-Prowse has been called up for England duty.

And, as to be expected, a number of Saints fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

The 26-year-old will fill in for Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips, who withdrew from Gareth Southgate’s squad through injury.

Ward-Prowse missed out on a place in Southgate’s European Championship squad over the summer but will now have the chance to impress the manager and possibly add to his eight caps as England prepare for World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

The central midfielder, who scored before being sent off against Chelsea prior to the international break, is now the eighth Southampton player who will head off to represent their country.

Saints fans react

Southampton shared the news regarding Ward-Prowse’s call up on their official Twitter page. This is what these Saints supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling it as ‘great news’.

Celtic handed Mikey Johnston injury boost

Celtic have been handed a major injury boost ahead of the Hoops’ Scottish Premiership clash on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the talk?

According to a report by the Daily Record, Ange Postecoglou confirmed that he will be able to call upon Mikey Johnston for the Bhoys’ trip to Motherwell this afternoon, as the winger has recovered from the latest in a series of injuries which have seen the 22-year-old make just one competitive appearance under the 56-year-old.

Speaking about Johnston’s recovery, the Hoops boss said: “Mikey Johnston is available, which is good.”

Ange will be buzzing

Considering just how many injuries Postecoglou has had to deal with throughout the first few months of his tenure at Parkhead, that Johnston finally seems to have recovered from his numerous knocks is sure to have left the 56-year-old buzzing.

While the winger has struggled for game-time in recent campaigns, largely down to the 22-year-old appearing to be rather injury-prone, he nevertheless demonstrated back in 2018/19 that, when given the opportunity, he certainly has the potential to be a hugely important player for the Bhoys.

Indeed, over his 14 Premiership appearances that season, Johnston scored an impressive five goals at an average of one strike for every 136 minutes of football played.

As such, if the winger can maintain his fitness going forwards, as well as once again hitting this rate of goals per minute, he could undoubtedly play a key role within Postecoglou’s side and potentially help fire Celtic back to the top of the Premiership.

Considering the team’s rather ropey away form so far this season – with the Hoops having won just once on the road in the current league campaign – the manager will certainly be hoping that the 22-year-old can help his side secure a much-needed victory at Fir Park today.

Powerplay ponderings for Ponting

Albie Morkel’s 18-ball 40 during South Africa’s Powerplay, towards the end of the run-chase, was instrumental in the three-wicket win for the visitors © Getty Images

The first one-day international in Australia to feature a batting Powerplay ended with the new rule contributing to the home team’s demise. A win that South Africa’s captain Johan Botha described as “massive” came because he and Albie Morkel took full advantage of their five-over selection, which they used to put a chase that had started to founder, back on track. They took their Powerplay at the start of the 45th over, when they needed 51 from 36 balls with three wickets in hand having just lost the well-set JP Duminy and Neil McKenzie. It was make or break for South Africa and as Morkel found the boundary at will with the field up in his unbeaten 40 from 18 deliveries, it was Australia who were left broken.Ricky Ponting said before the game that he had spent plenty of time chatting to Australia’s domestic players, who have experienced the batting Powerplay at state level, about how best to use it. As Ponting tried to work out where to locate his boundary-riders in the dying stages he was left wishing he had also spent time studying Morkel’s batting.”We hadn’t seen a lot of Albie Morkel either, to tell you the truth,” Ponting said. “I don’t know if we were really as prepared as we could have been to bowl to him in those Powerplay overs at the end of the game. He hit the ball incredibly cleanly at the end and maybe we could have done some things a little bit better there to make it a little bit more difficult for him.”South Africa picked up 0 for 49 during their batting Powerplay, while Australia had collected 2 for 43. Australia began theirs in the 42nd over with six wickets in hand and the dangerous strikers David Husseyand Cameron White at the crease. But the men seemed to lack urgency during the five overs – both lost their wickets in any case – and Ponting knows that timing his Powerplays will be crucial in future ODIs.”I contemplated taking it really early today, just after their bowling Powerplay,” he said. “The ball was still nice and hard and both Shaun [Marsh] and I were going pretty well.”He also considered using it when the ball changed after 34 overs but Australia had just lost a wicket and the move was postponed. South Africa always planned to use theirs as late as possible, although theNo. 9 Botha would have preferred specialist batsmen to be there, instead of him and Morkel. As it happened, it didn’t much matter. The success was particularly pleasing for a South African side that lost both Twenty20s and entered the one-day series as clear underdogs. As much as anything, Botha was happy that the victory would prove tohis own players that they could hold their own against the world champions.”This is massive for us and it shows that we’ve got some guys that can really fight out there,” Botha said. “If we can just sharpen up a little bit in certain areas we probably can have a really good team. This just shows everyone in that changeroom that we can compete on this tour in the one-day tour.”However, he knows how important it is to back up in the second match at Bellerive Oval on Sunday. “I think it’s put a little bit [of pressure] back on them,” Botha said. “If we play really well in Hobart and we go two up then it’ll be massive pressure. But if after this weekend it’s one-all then it’s all square again, then the pressure is on both teams. Sunday is going to be a huge game for us.”
