Morgan Sanson would vastly improve Manchester United’s midfield options

Manchester United are well on course to achieving a spot in the top four again this season, when just a few months ago it seemed almost impossible.

The change in scenario, well that’s all been due to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the manager who has made a wonderful difference to everyone at Manchester United.

The players have developed such freedom in their play, something that could be an advertisement for anyone who wants to come and join Old Trafford, with now seemingly the best time to do so.

Whoever may be in charge from this summer onwards, there is still work to be done and the one area that definitely needs improving, as well as their defence, is midfield.

One player who certainly has the star-quality to put an end to their concerns in midfield is Marseille’s Morgan Sanson.

Sanson, (who is valued at £19.8 million on Transfermarkt) has pretty much every window been linked with a big move to England and this summer will probably be no different.

Having provided four goals and four assists this season, he hasn’t quite lived up to the tally he accumulated last season – 12 goals, three assists – yet Sanson still presents himself as a very good option for a club like Manchester United.

He has years of experience playing for one of the top teams in Ligue 1, which could leave him with a relatively high chance of having success at Old Trafford.

Whether its a more attacking or defensive role the manager wants Morgan Sanson to perform, he can do it all and that’s one of his top assets.

The 24-year-old is still young, has plenty of time to adjust and if he can continue his strong performances at Old Trafford, could be a new star.

Gerard Deulofeu’s latest blitz proves he deserves to play for a Premier League giant

Watford’s rise under Javi Garcia continued through the weekend, as they defeated Cardiff City 5-1 away from home to move closer to a European spot.

On a day when Watford produced thrilling counter-attacking football, the one to lead the charge was their talisman Gerard Deulofeu.

Despite missing a chunk of Watford’s campaign through injury, Deulofeu’s thriving under the free role given by Garcia. The former Barcelona man gave his best performance in a Hornets shirt, ruining Cardiff’s momentum with a thumping performance.

He scored a brilliant hat-trick, which involved a superb finish from just outside the penalty area and two electric ones in the second half where he displayed his pace and commendable finishing ability. Deulofeu later turned provider by smartly assisting Troy Deeney rather than going for another himself, proving him to be a team player.

However, the Spaniard’s output can be even better with more talented players around him. Things might not have worked for him at Barcelona, but he’s loving life at the Premier League and could prosper at certain Premier League giants, such is his level of immense quality.

With teams such as Manchester United lacking bite and pace through the right-side, he could be the perfect ingredient to add more spice and creativity to their attack. He would also blend into Unai Emery’s fast-paced style well and thrive with Aubameyang and Lacazette with him.

While Deulofeu’s not going to want to leave Watford anytime soon, his blistering performance against Cardiff proved he’s ready to start thriving at a higher level.

Major mistakes: Crystal Palace really messed these 2 things up in January

Crystal Palace had some highs and lows in January, in what turned out to be a mixed month.

The Eagles came very close to beating league leaders Liverpool, and overcame Tottenham in the FA Cup- both being superb performances.

Equally, this was going to be a significant month in the transfer window, as they entered it with some glaring deficiencies in their squad that needed to be resolved.

With that in mind, these are the two biggest mistakes Crystal Palace made over the transfer window:

Not signing a striker soon enough

The chronic lack of form from The Eagles’ strikers has forced manager Roy Hodgson to field wingers Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend in that position for most of the season so far. They desperately needed a new striker and it should have been a matter of urgency. Therefore, it is bizarre that they waited until Deadline Day to bring in a new player.

Palace signed Michy Batshuayi on loan from Chelsea in the final hours of the transfer window, in what may be a very good signing indeed. The Belgian had a wonderful time with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga last season, and while his loan at Valencia didn’t go to plan for the first half of this season, he still has undoubted talent.

But had Palace signed the 25-year-old, or a player of his ilk sooner, they may have avoided some troublesome results in January. The Eagles lost to Watford at home and drew with Southampton away. Had they had the striker that they were wanting, the results could have been different. They are only hovering four points above the relegation zone, and those sacrificed five points could prove to be costly.

Re-signing Bakary Sako

Now this is not necessarily saying that Bakary Sako is a bad player, but it is hard to see what he has done to warrant returning to Selhurst Park.

The 30-year-old was released by Palace at the end of last season, and was signed for free by Championship outfit West Brom. He started a total of two Championship games during his time with The Baggies, and while he may have worked his way back to fitness, he did not exactly take the team by storm.

He may thrive again at Palace, but this is a bit of a faux-pas by them signing a player that was deemed not good enough at the beginning of the season.

Verdict: Should Man United offer Angel Gomes a new contract?

Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes’ current contract with the Red Devils comes to an end in the summer of 2020.

This has prompted Chelsea to show interest in bringing the 19-year-old to Stamford Bridge after its culmination, as reported by The Metro.

United have already offered the teenager a contract worth £25,000-a-week and it is suggested within the report that Gomes’ representatives are unimpressed with the offer, indicating that he may not re-sign on these terms.

The club have defended their offer though, using Mason Greenwood’s extension as a benchmark for academy players who are making their step up into the first-team setup.

Gomes has been handed limited game time this season, making just six appearances for the first-team, and The Manchester Evening News have suggested this is because he hasn’t signed a new contract yet.

With the above in mind, FFC writers have given their verdicts on whether United should offer Gomes improved terms.

Jonathan Radcliffe

“Angel Gomes is obviously a promising player, but it is worth pointing out that Manchester United went and paid £47m to take Bruno Fernandes, a player who plays in his position, to Old Trafford in January, and he has already hit the ground running with three goals and four assists in nine matches – that does not bode well for the youngster.

“Whilst it would be damaging to lose him to a rival, it would be worse for his talent to be wasted. The Red Devils should look at the bigger picture and let him go.”

Lewis Blain

“I see no reason why Manchester United should tie Angel Gomes down to a new deal. The Red Devils are on a bit of a resurgence from the dead and he’s not played a part in it whatsoever. To me, he’s just another Tom Cleverley, who is probably better off forging a career away from Old Trafford.

“In addition to this, he’s provided zero goals or assists in ten first-team appearances per Transfermarkt, so he’s not exactly proving his worth either. Solskjaer is also well-stocked in his position following the addition of Fernandes in January – he’s got Pogba to return, too.

“Regardless of his comparisons to United hero Paul Scholes, he just isn’t living up to expectations and isn’t worth fresh terms – unless he’s happy to be a mere squad player. Gomes ought to leave for the greater good of all involved.”

Quickfire Questions: Can you get 100% on this Man United prodigies quiz?

Charles Jones

“Honestly, I don’t see Gomes having any real future at the top-level.

“The young attacking midfielder is quite simply too diminutive standing at a measly 5 ft 3, and that lack of physicality would be huge at Sunday League level nevermind when you’re coming up against some of the best athletes in the world.

“Okay, small players have done well before, Lionel Messi is arguably the best player ever, but if Gomes had the talent to be the next big thing surely he’d have already broken through?

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t been hesitant to play youngsters, look at Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood for example, but for some reason he’s steered clear of Gomes.

“I don’t think they should bother even thinking about giving him a new contract.”

Danny Lewis

“Having already had a £25,000-a-week offer turned down by the teenager, the last thing United should be doing is allowing themselves to be held to ransom by a youngster who hasn’t had much of an impact yet.

“With this said, he is a talented player, so if a u-turn is taken and he accepts the current terms then he would still be worth keeping around at Old Trafford.

“Even if he may not be able to make it into the team, with the likes of Fernandes blocking his route into the starting XI, there will likely be a sell-on value that makes it worth keeping him around – while he can also be somebody to use off the bench or in the cups for the time being while he proves his game.

“However, there is no way that they should be allowing him to force their hand towards giving him more money, considering there have been plenty of youngsters who have broken into the side ahead of him.”

Meanwhile, a Twitter post has shown what Bruno Fernandes has been getting up to.

Barcelona not being interested in N’Golo Kante could highlight a bigger problem

N’Golo Kante is currently a hot topic on the footballing stage.

El Desmarque have remarked that the midfielder wants to leave Stamford Bridge in the not so distant future and has set his sights on European giants such as Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich and even Barcelona.

But the Catalans are now seemingly out of the race. If the new report coming from Mundo Deportivo is to be believed, the Blaugrana have no interest in the midfielder reported to cost around €100m (£84.9m).

It does sound like a harsh verdict on a player that’s held in pretty high regard both among the fans and managers alike. Arsene Wenger heaped praise on him when talking to beIN Sports last summer (as quoted by Goal):

“He is one of the most influential midfielders I’ve seen play football. He constantly makes simple decisions and never overcomplicates it.”

With 156 appearances for the Blues already, he’s also been a major piece of their jigsaw ever since his arrival. But even with that being said, this snub from Barcelona could indicate a big change is shaping up in the world of football and Kante’s kind – for all their quality and skill – might be a dying breed among the very top clubs.

The 28-year-old Frenchman has spent the vast majority of his career playing as either a central or defensive midfielder, as per the games Transfermarkt have in their database, and is mostly known for his incredible ability to break up play, intercept the ball and initiate those transitions.

We can see as much in his career average of 3.4 tackles and 2.5 interceptions for the games documented by Whoscored, which is an incredible achievement in itself but only becomes essential when Kante is actually playing for a team that thrives in such an environment. And top teams in modern football rarely do.

Nowadays, if you are in a big team, chances are you’ll be the one constantly attacking, constantly dominating the ball while facing a low-block and a squad that’s willing to turtle up, weather the storm and hit on the break.

In that scenario, Kante’s skillset becomes limited to snuffing out the odd counter-attack, rather than winning the ball back and starting breaks of his own – a defining characteristic of his role at Leicester City and Chelsea under Antonio Conte.

After all, how is he supposed to tackle and intercept the ball when he’s mostly involved in big possession plays and structural attacks? This is not to say that the Frenchman doesn’t have qualities other than his defensive and transitional contributions.

On the contrary, this season he has tallied three goals in the Premier League already while in 2018/19, he could boast with five goals and four assists in total and across all competitions.

Clearly, there’s more to this midfielder than just tackles and interceptions. But still, those are his most unique and established strengths – that’s the environment that gets the best out of him. Yes, he’s decent in other aspects as well but for the likes of Barcelona, being decent on the ball isn’t really enough.

For true Chelsea fans only: How much do you really know about the Blues’ famous 2004/05 season? Test your knowledge now…

The likes of Frenkie de Jong and Arthur, highly technical midfielders who can also do the defensive part well, are more welcoming reinforcements for the Catalans, and a similar thing can be concluded for Chelsea as well.

Frank Lampard’s renaissance has also rejuvenated the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, two of the Blues’ players who were struggling under Maurizio Sarri.

But now that Chelsea are also transitioning to an attacking force that dominates play – with 57.6% possession in the Premier League and 55.2% in the Champions League – maybe Kante’s expertise are slowly but surely becoming less relevant at Stamford Bridge as well.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule with big European teams that love to defend and hit on the counter – the likes of Atletico Madrid and Juventus could be examples of squads that prefer a slower approach to games and value a good defence over a sensational offence. Likewise, every top club will be involved in big games where Kante’s sheer energy is crucial.

In general, however, it feels like top teams would benefit more from an elite midfielder who’s able to break the lines, cut the deep blocks open and create opportunities than splashing the cash for a deep-lying ball-winner who thrives when out of possession and setting the attacks against the run of play.

When everything we’ve just said is taken into consideration, Barcelona’s “no” to a World Cup winning midfielder and two-time Premier League winner is no longer such a surprising verdict.

Not only that but it also may be an indication of what the future holds for those lying deep in the midfields of Europe’s biggest clubs. Play-breakers are becoming less and less prevalent, with playmakers starting to reign supreme.

Elsewhere, many Spurs fans were absolutely buzzing with links to a player that sliced through their team in their last encounter…

Marco Silva’s big decision against Cardiff proves winds of change are blowing at Goodison Park

Goodison Park was a miserable place to be in the 2017/18 campaign, but the arrival of Marco Silva is rapidly shifting the mood towards one epitomised by optimism and enthusiasm for the direction in which the club is heading.

A painfully mediocre Premier League campaign, an early exit from the Europa League and three different managers, including the notoriously unpopular Sam Allardyce, contributed towards a depressing feeling at Everton last season.

The Toffees were not performing incredibly poorly; they were performing at an excruciatingly average level, with little by way of genuinely achievable targets to aspire towards.

Allardyce’s stint in the managerial hot-seat was particularly frustrating for a set of supporters who want to see their side break free from the manacles of the twilight zone between the top-six and the rest of the division and compete amongst the very best in the league.

Big Sam’s decisions perplexed supporters, his style of play was frustrating and his general demeanour did not evoke much by way of notable enthusiasm.

But after a season of treading water and hurling abuse at Allardyce, the club appear to have turned a corner, not only in terms of their results but also in the context of the feeling around Goodison.

Silva’s impressive start to life at the club has not completely blown away the supporters just yet but, together with the arrival of Marcel Brands, the Toffees faithful now have reason to believe once again.

Ahead of Everton’s home clash with Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon Silva was faced with an incredibly difficult decision: choosing between Kurt Zouma and Yerry Mina in central defence.

He went with the latter, which is exactly what the supporters wanted according to our poll result. Prior to the fixture, we asked Everton fans whether they wanted to see Mina or Zouma partner Michael Keane in central defence, and an overwhelming 73% opted for the Colombian giant.

It was a decision which will have had Silva caught between two minds. On the one hand Zouma had been excellent until he had been ruled ineligible to face Chelsea, and on the other Mina is a permanent member of the squad who was outstanding in Zouma’s absence.

Clearly, Mina’s showing at Stamford Bridge provided sufficient evidence to convince both Everton supporters and Silva that he deserves a place in the starting eleven now he is back to full fitness.

That Silva’s decision aligned with popular opinion amongst the Everton supporters is indicative of the growing feeling of harmony at Goodison Park, which is characterised by a collective understanding between manager, players and supporters of the club’s core ambitions and values.

Sure, riots wouldn’t have broken out if Zouma had been given the nod, but Silva’s decision to opt for Mina proves that Goodison is changing, and the Portuguese man is rapidly gaining the trust of the progressive-minded Evertonians donning blue and white on the terraces.

QPR fans want Angel Rangel to sign new contract

Angel Rangel joined Queens Park Rangers last month, with the experienced defender signing a contract with the R’s until January 13.

The 35-year-old had been available on a free transfer following his release from Swansea City, and was snapped up amid QPR’s early-season struggles.

Rangel made his debut in the club’s 3-0 defeat to Bristol City last month, and has since played against Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City in the Championship.

The R’s are unbeaten in their last three matches following a very difficult start, and will be looking to build on that when they return to action after the international break with a trip to Bolton Wanderers.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”288872″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafas Pub Facts Murray The Magician & Desperately Seeking Zaha”]

As it stands, Rangel will be a free agent once again in January, but a number of the QPR fans have called on their club to hand the 5ft 10in Spaniard a new deal.

QPR are certainly in need of experience and indeed numbers this season, and extending Rangel’s contract seems a likely occurrence.

Tottenham fans pleased with return of Danny Rose

Danny Rose angered the Tottenham Hotspur supporters before the start of the new Premier League season when he revealed that he wanted to return ‘back up north’.

Rose also criticised Tottenham’s lack of transfer activity during the summer, and at that point, it did appear that the 27-year-old’s career with Spurs was coming to an end.

Rose missed almost nine months of action with a serious knee injury, but returned to the Tottenham team for the Champions League clash against Real Madrid last month.

The left-back made his first Premier League appearance of the season against Crystal Palace at the weekend, and has earned a recall to the England squad for their upcoming international friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

Rose, who is valued at £25.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, spoke to Tottenham’s official television channel after the Palace game on Sunday, and discussed how much it meant to return to the field.

There is no question that the defender’s long-term future is still up in the air, but a number of Spurs supporters are keen for a line to be drawn under the saga.

A selection of the best Twitter reaction to Rose’s interview can be seen below:

Poor form shows why Liverpool need a player like Kolasinac

After yet another disappointing result, Liverpool’s season is coming to a stumbling finish.

The Reds are currently falling over the line, but it may still be enough for Champions League football next season. They may well be playing their football in the top tier of the European game next season more or less by default. As Manchester United lost at the Emirates Stadium, Jurgen Klopp’s side know that two victories in their final two games will ensure a top four spot.

This summer, that will be one of the key things to think about: midweek football.

Liverpool’s squad is already quite thin on the ground. One of the biggest criticisms of Jurgen Klopp of late has been his slowness to make changes when his side are changing games, but that neglects one major question: what exactly is there to change? Perhaps the biggest illustration of their predicament is Sadio Mane, a man whose presence Liverpool really can’t do without.

Behind that, though, there are other obvious weaknesses of this squad which will have to be rectified whatever happens this summer. James Milner at left-back springs to mind.

Although he’s performed admirably for his team, doing a job that’s been foisted upon him, the former Manchester City man is not a left-back. And indeed, deploying him there takes him away from other areas of the pitch where he can be effective in helping Jurgen Klopp’s side to win games: in the absence of Jordan Henderson, for example, Milner could well be an asset in the middle.

A new left-back is a must, then, but who should Liverpool look to?

Having been linked with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Kieran Tierney, it looks like Klopp is favouring youth over experience. This might not be the way to go. After all, any summer purchase in that position would surely need to be able to take Milner’s place.

Liverpool should be looking to Schalke 04’s Bosnian full-back Sead Kolasinac, rated by Transfermarkt.com at £7.65m. Although Jurgen Klopp is a feted former manager of Borussia Dortmund, Schalke’s fierce local rivals, Kolasinac is the kind of player Liverpool could be doing with.

An attacking full-back who can play further forward, the Bosnian also averages almost three tackles per game and just over three interceptions, proving that he’s capable of that important skill each of the Premier League’s top six club’s desire in a defender these days: stopping counter attacks. He also brings the tall, physical presence of a player who can also slot in at centre back if required – something that should mean less of Lucas Leiva deputising in the heart of the defence.

Going forward, he can contribute, too, but the major concern is his crossing ability.

Playing in behind Philippe Coutinho would necessitate overlapping runs as the Brazilian likes to cut inside, and so chances to cross will be plentiful. Although Milner is a fabulous crosser of the football, playing on the left significantly decreases his value on the wing.

The naturally left-footed Kolasinac would perhaps be a better fit here, too, if it weren’t for the fact that he has only played – on average – one cross every two games or so.

But that is a bit of a misnomer.

For one thing, it’s the quality of crosses, not the quantity, which matter the most. But above all else, the question shouldn’t be whether or not the full-back delivers a cross, it should be a question of who he crosses to.

For Liverpool, the lack of a physical penalty box striker means the need for high crosses into the box is limited to players getting across the near post or the occasional deep runs of Georginio Wijnaldum – something we witnessed against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve.

This season, as Schalke have struggled to find a system that works, Kolasinac has been deployed as a full-back behind several different wingers all season, and with multiple different strikers, too. As a result, it would be unfair to read too much into Kolasinac’s attacking stats, especially when his defensive ones are so good.

If you’re looking for attacking numbers, however, only four Schalke players have scored more goals than the 23-year-old left-back, and no-one has made more assists.

In the end, this summer will be about adding depth and quality for Liverpool. Stumbling over the line in the league might just be a blessing in disguise: perhaps it focuses the minds on the need for investment, if they didn’t know that already. It means there can now be no excuses.

In Kolasinac, Klopp would be getting a versatile full-back who can play in other positions, too. That’s a huge plus point in the Bosnian’s column, given the need for depth and the fact that Liverpool have often been caught out this season, having to field makeshift wide players (like Milner at left-back) or defenders (Lucas Leiva).

When it comes to a new left-back, Klopp seems to be looking to youth. He’d do well to remember, though, that Kolasinac is still only 23, and yet is already an experienced international player. Liverpool should be going all out to get him this summer.

Arsenal fans hit out at Van Persie

Robin van Persie was once a cult-hero of Arsenal, until he burned his bridges with the Gunners by moving to Manchester United, becoming public enemy number one –  until Cesc Fabregas signed for Chelsea, that is.

Ahead of his return to English football tonight in the Europa League – Turkish giants Fenerbahce travel to face Manchester United – the Dutch international has irked Arsenal fans on Twitter with some controversial comments in which he called the Manchester club “home”.

Considering he made 277 appearances for Arsenal and just 105 for Manchester United, it’s quite a strange comment and, understandably, Gunners fans are furious – although some of them stated they couldn’t care less, having cut ties to their former captain long ago.

It will still add salt to the wounds, which have only recently started to heal, of Gooners and the pain is unlikely to be fully gone until Arsenal finally get their hands on the Premier League crown that has eluded them since they went unbeaten in the 2003/04 season.
