Spirit wins first encounter against the Fury

In the first of two back to back one day interstate Womens National Cricket League matches, the Victorian Spirit triumphed over the Western Fury by 94 runs at Abbett Park in Perth today.

David Bebb23-Nov-2002In the first of two back to back one day interstate Women’s National Cricket League matches, the Victorian Spirit triumphed over the Western Fury by 94 runs at Abbett Park in Perth today. This was a match of contrasts. The Fury in the field were sharp and accurate. A feather in the cap of coach Murray Robbins. By comparison, the Spirit could not emulate their hosts high standard but had the better share of the luck. The run out of the Fury captain Zoe Goss is the only high point of their fielding. On the other hand, the Spirit ran well between the wickets, they took few risks in doing so and really set the standard for that aspect of the game. Whereas the Fury could well have run an extra 30 runs in running halfway down the track before agreeing not to run and heading back to safety. When they did pierce the field they often only ran two where a three was certainly possible.Player of the match for this game was Melanie Jones who, as you will see, well deserved the accolade with a score of 95 runs and a display of exceptional fielding from the deep which removed the Fury captain.Victoria won the toss and elected to bat on a humid, partly overcast morning.Openers Belinda Clark and Louise Broadfoot took the score to 35 beforeBroadfoot 13 (from 23 balls), with the last ball of the ninth over playedaround a delivery from Fury captain Zoe Goss and was bowled. The ball shaved the pad on the way through and the bowler looked to have half turned in appeal before the death rattle of scattered stumps alerted her to her triumph. The second wicket was worth one hundred runs when Spirit Belinda Clark swept at a leg side ball from Avril Fahey and played the ball into the stumps behind her after scoring 58 (92 balls). Victoria Spirit 135 at the fall of the second wicket at the end of the 32nd over.Right hander Kelly Applebee fell to English import Dawn Holden in the following over. Without a score, she spooned a soft catch to Angelle Gray at gully.Within sight of a century, big hitting Melanie Jones 95 (102) lofted KellyTyrrell to Dawn Holden in the deep at long off and was caught. She played avariety of orthodox strokes either side of the wicket including twelve boundaries and became top scorer and the fourth wicket to fall with the score now at 216.Brooke McFarlane 36 (55) was unfortunately run out when her partner CathrynFitzpatrick pushed a ball from Tyrrell at the covers which was leapt upon by Gray whose quick thinking and sharp throw to the bowler at the non strikers end found McFarlane short of her ground. Spirit now 227 with the loss of the fifth wicket.Fitzpatrick 16 (12) and Jane Franklin 3 (2) were not out after fifty overs had been bowled when the Victorian Spirit had accrued 241 runs for the loss of only five wickets. There were no multiple wicket takers amongst seven Western Fury bowlers. Sarah Collyer went wicket less from her ten overs but was the most economical of the bowlers conceding 26 runs. The wicket takers were Goss (1-22) who took her wicket in her first over, Holden (1-45), Tyrrell (1-49) and Fahey (1-59).The Western Fury were needing to score at 4.84 runs per over to surpass theSpirit score.Elwyn Campbell was out for a second ball duck when Spirit fire brand CathrynFitzpatrick sped through the defense and knocked down the stumps. Already one wicket down without a score on the board and a stiff sea breeze assisting the bowler from the southern end.In the initial stages of the Fury reply, the frequency of runs from sundries were neck and neck and at times ahead of runs scored from the bat.Zoe Goss 5 (26) was run out looking for a third run when batting partnerHeather Taylor lofted the ball into the deep extra covers and Melanie Jones made a direct hit from the boundary line at the non strikers end – to whichGoss was returning. Western Fury now with 19 runs on the board and two wickets gone in the ninth over.Another run out at the non strikers end occurred when Taylor drove straight back at bowler Shannon Young who tipped the ball into the stumps effecting the run out of Angelle Gray 8 (17) who was backing up two meters out of her ground. Three wickets for 55.Pulling at a leg side ball from Shannon Young, Heather Taylor 19 (60) top edged into the mid wicket and was caught there by Belinda Clark. The fourth wicket had fallen with 55 still the score.Attempting to glance a leg side ball from Young, Sarah Collyer 13 (42) popped the ball up off the shoulder of the bat into the backward square leg where it was taken on the circle by Clea Smith. Western Fury five wickets for 88 in the 29th over.Avril Fahey 12 (26) lofted a straight drive off the bowling of Louise Broadfootdown the throat of Jane Franklin who was at mid off. The wicket of Fahey wasthe sixth to fall with 106 the score at that stage.Making her debut for WA at number eight, Lauren Stammers 8 (15) issued up a soft catch to a short leg fielder Jodi Dean off the bowling of Clea Smith. The seventh wicket fell at 137.Dawn Holden lofted a drive off Cathryn Fitzpatrick into the covers and was caught brilliantly by Shannon Young. The fielder had to reach high above her head to pull down the catch. A good catch to remove a quality player who had posted 43 (68) before the eighth wicket fell with the Fury score on 139.The ninth wicket fell on 145 when Kelly Tyrrell 5 (4) was bowled by Fitzpatrick. When Rennee Chappell 3 (16) was bowled by Jane Franklin, theWestern Fury were all out 147 in the 48th over. The Spirit’s best bowling was from the pace bowling from Cathryn Fitzpatrick which brought the reward of three wickets for thirty two runs from her nine overs. With two wickets for 25 runs from ten overs, Shannon Young was economical. One wicket each to Smith, Franklin and Broadfoot round out the wicket takers. The Abbett park track is the same one which the host club Scarborough scored 300 runs in one day a week earlier in the mens grade competition. Conditions which suit the pace of Fitzpatrick and the Spirit.

Umar, Danish spearhead Pakistan 'A' to victory

The pace and spin combination of Umar Gul and Danish Kaneria guided Pakistan ‘A’ to a nine-wicket victory over Sri Lanka ‘A’ in first of the two four-day ‘Tests’ at the Iqbal Stadium Friday

21-Sep-2002The pace and spin combination of Umar Gul and Danish Kaneria guided Pakistan ‘A’ to a nine-wicket victory over Sri Lanka ‘A’ in first of the two four-day ‘Tests’ at the Iqbal Stadium Friday.Budding pacer Umar claimed four wickets for 36 runs and Test wrist spinner Danish scooped up three wickets for 101 as the visitors were bowled out for 223 after having resumed this morning at 72 for two.Pakistan ‘A’, who had secured a healthy 208-run first inning lead, were left to score 16 run for victory which they achieved in 23 balls losing Asim Kamal. It was a match Asim would like to forget as he followed up his first innings duck with a nine-ball two in the second. But Danish would certainly like to remember this match as he had match figures of eight for 143 runs. This performance virtually guarantees him a place in the Pakistan team for the three-Test series against Australia starting Oct 3 at Colombo. But the star of the day was Umar Gul who exhibited talent and potential in turning into a good aggressive bowler. The youngster bowled his heart out with controlled accuracy to prove to his skipper that he deserved more overs than he got in the end.Umar, who had grabbed both the Sri Lankan wickets when curtains fell Thursday, created the inroad immediately in the fourth monring when he pinned Naveed Nawaz in front of the wickets with the visitors having added only 24 runs to their overnight score.Danish fully cashed in on the opening when he kept the tourists guessing with his crafty bowling. And though the spinner went for over 100 runs, most of the shots were unconvincing and appeared to have been played to take the pressure off rather merit being the criterion.Only Jahan Mubarak, who started at 19, offered any significant resistance by hitting a polished and unconquered 93. He faced 180 deliveries and slammed 12 hits to the fence.Moin Khan also completed an impressive comeback when he accounted for six batsmen behind the wickets. The gutsy wicketkeeper looked athletic and agile but the most impressive part was his fitness.

N Gautam – a tribute

Tamil Nadu did not give this game young cricketer a fair deal, dropping him at the first sign of loss of form rather than nurturinghis undoubted talent and big-match temperament.

V Ramnarayan08-May-2002N Gautam, who died on May 7 after battling cancer, was one of the mostpopular cricketers of Tamil Nadu. Tall and slightly built, thisAlwarpet CC, MRF and Tamil Nadu middle-order batsman batted in aclassically correct, erect style, playing mostly in the ‘V’ andbuilding innings with care.

Tamil Nadu did not give this game young cricketer a fair deal, dropping him at the first sign of loss of form rather than nurturinghis undoubted talent and big-match temperament.

If Gautam’s batting was solid and dependable, his medium-pace was morethan useful, sometimes breaking partnerships when the main bowlers hadfailed and slowing things down when the opposing batsmen were on thewarpath. He was a swift mover and hard-working fielder who gave 100per cent all the time. Gautam was the quintessential team man thatevery captain loved to have in the side for his never-say-die spirit, the same spirit that enabled him to face his personal crisis withcourage and confidence. When I played against Gautam for the first time, I bowled him with anunplayable ball. He was barely 18 or 19 then, I perhaps 40, and heflashed a boyish smile at me when I assured him it had been a fluke. We later played for the same club in the senior division league andenjoyed several moments of friendship despite the age differencebetween us. I enjoyed pulling his leg and, judging by the size of hisgrin, he enjoyed being teased by me too.Tamil Nadu did not give this game young cricketer a fair deal, dropping him at the first sign of loss of form rather than nurturinghis undoubted talent and big-match temperament. It was as much thestate’s loss as the youngster’s, as cricketers of the stature of KapilDev and Mohammad Azharuddin were heard to remark on occasion.Gautam later played for Goa, and even scored one of his three firstclass hundreds for that state, but by that time he was past his prime. He never let his disappointments at the first-class level interferewith his contributions to MRF and Globe Trotters in local cricket. Hewas one of the mainstays of the side and often came to the team’srescue when the bigger stars had failed.Almost every cricketer who came into contact with Gautam was convincedthat he was that rarity among cricketers – a good human being. I couldnot agree more.

SPCL 3 – Three teams vying for league leadership

Just two points separate the top three in Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3, where Hambledon, Purbrook and Alton continue to set the early pace. The trio all won again, with Hambledon inflicting Paultons’ second consecutive defeat, Purbrook edging out Gosport Borough and Alton overhauling Hartley Wintney’s 209-4.Hambledon, relegated from Premier 2 last season, wobbled at 20-2 before cruising past Paultons’ 204-7 at Ridge Meadow.Colin James (85), who forged a 122-run opening partnership with Duncan Park (39), took his tally past the 200 mark and then celebrated when team-mate Paul Wilde trapped Imre Chakrabarti and Rob Norris leg before.Former Hampshire spinner Ian Turner dominated the stage thereafter, hitting an unbeaten 82 and sharing an unbroken century fifth wicket stand with Matt Jones (40) as the Dons eased home.Gosport, struggling in fourth from bottom position, took Purbrook to the wire – the visitors struggling at 125-6 (Will Prozesky 46) against Mark Oxford (4-31) and Nathan Collins (3-47) before Wayne Musselwhite’s key 29 not out took them to 174.A five-wicket blast from Mark Stanley (5-39) had Borough wobbling at 85-6, but John Adams (49) and Richard Edwards (26) almost swung it round as Gosport closed at 168-8.In-form Matt Digweed (71 not out) and Tristan Gregory (41) cashed in against Alton’s below par bowling and fielding but Hartley Wintney were unable to defend 209-4. Michael Heffernan’s clean cut 96 guided the visitors home.Favourites St Cross Symondians bounced back in style from the previous weekend’s surprise defeat at Portsmouth. They were far too strong for newly promoted Redlynch & Hale, with Kiwi Mark Parker hammering an unbeaten 127 in a formidable 254-4 (Marc Rees 57).Spin pair Matt Perry-Lewis (4-22) and Will Marriner (4-26) bowled the Wiltshire border side out for 81.”It was a win we needed after what happened the previous week, but to be honest we weren’t stretched,” confessed Perry-Lewis.Portsmouth continued in a winning vein, with James Scott (3-22), Mike Clark (3-30) and Rick Marston (3-42) bowling Leckford out for 97 at chilly St Helen’s, Southsea.James Moon (42) and Clark (31) earlier cemented Portsmouth’s position, although spinner Andy Cattle deserved better after a 6-28 return in PCC’s 190-9.A seven-wicket defeat by Hursley Park has left Hook & Newnham Basics propping up the table – a century start by Raman Prendergast (64) and John Harris (58) pointing the Park towards their hosts 172-9 (Tom Burns 3-15).Matt Gover was in such a tizz after Havant’s double defeats by Leckford and Purbrook that he vowed not to shave until his team won.But a fortnight’s fluff disappeared from his cheeks after debut centurion Simon Greenfield and JJ Owen – plus a helping hand from 13 year old Stuart Ransley – put previously unbeaten New Milton to flight.Greenfield, who spent most of his 1st XI days occupying Havant’s No 11 slot, has taken to his new second team opening role like a duck to water and was elated at his best ever 117 not out.Jon Owen, who hit an accomplished 60, was a middle-order batsman in his Portsmouth Grammar School days, but he too has added a touch of polish to his batting. The pair pointed Havant to 255-4 before Ransley’s spell of 4-18 (chronicled elsewhere on this page) helped send New Milton crashing to 133 all out (John Dolman 35).Ventnor at long last had something to cheer after whisking Waterlooville out for 105 and winning by seven wickets at Rowlands Avenue.Queenslander Chris Baumann (41) took Ville to 67-0, but the innings fell apart when Keith Jones (4-18) took three wickets in four balls.Neil Dodds (6-21) cleaned up and left former Northwood left-hander Neil Westhorpe (43 not out) and Merrill Capenerhurst (34) to complete the formalities.Smiles too for Bashley, particularly former 1st XI captain Graham Pardey, who has taken over the second team captain’s role from Steve Latimore.Pardey had an immediate impact too, using all his experience to make 63 and ease Bashley from a slightly uncertain 95-4 (Ian Britton 49) to 204-6.Chris Gates (32 not out) proved a most reliable partner as Bashley made sure of a total which was to proved just beyond Flamingo’s reach at 199 all out.

Gers urged to sign McBurnie

Noel Whelan believes Oli McBurnie could be “dynamite” for Glasgow Rangers if he were to make the move north of the border.

The Lowdown: Gers linked to McBurnie

The Gers have been linked with a move for Sheffield United striker McBurnie (The Daily Mail), who is known as a boyhood Rangers fan.

As of yet, there appears to have been no official bid from the 55-time Scottish champions for the 6 foot 2 colossus.

The Latest: Whelan urges Gers to make signing

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan has suggested the capture of McBurnie would be a great signing for the Ibrox outfit. He said:

“He won’t be cheap for starters.

“He’s not had a good time at Sheffield United. There are a lot of question marks over him.

“But Steven Gerrard will get the best out of any player who moves to Rangers, he won’t sign a player unless he thinks they can improve his side.

“Defoe won’t give you a full season anymore and McBurnie gives you something different to Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe.

“He’s a focal point. He can play long balls up to him, he’s like Odsonne Edouard at Celtic. Players like Kent can then play off him. It could be dynamite.

“He’s strong and good in the air, they don’t have a forward who can do that at the moment.

“It will be a smart move from Rangers if they can get him at the right price.”

The Verdict: Debatable

£10.8m-valued McBurnie (Transfermarkt) has displayed his goalscoring ability in the past. He had a marvelous record for Swansea’s youth sides, scoring 34 goals in 36 games in Premier League 2, and he even managed to strike 22 times in the Championship during the 2018/19 term (Transfermarkt).

However, his move to the Blades has not gone well, managing just seven goals in 65 outings.

It has been reported the Yorkshire outfit would want £15m to let him depart – an absurd amount for Rangers, whose record signing remains the £12m they spent on Tore Andre Flo at the start of the century (via The Daily Record). For that amount of money, they can surely do better than McBurnie.

In other news, Kieran Maguire has made this Ibrox claim.

Experiência do colombiano Berrío na Libertadores ajudará o Fla, diz Diego

Wolves: Vitinha was poor vs Tottenham

Since being promoted to the Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been one of the most consistent sides around.

They have finished just outside the top six in each of the last two seasons, providing some captivating performances against the bigger sides.

However, 2020/21 has been particularly unkind to Wolves. Nuno Santo’s men have been pillaged by injuries and they have become the very definition of inconsistent. They are incredibly hard to predict, something the last fortnight or so has depicted.

They were drubbed 4-0 by Burnley but then looked back to their best as they came from behind to defeat Brighton.

Though, against an improving Tottenham side on Sunday, they weren’t really at the races. Nuno’s men were beaten 2-0 and in all honesty, they never really looked like finding the net with any certainty.

Fabio Silva spurned a succession of good chances but he wasn’t helped by the young duo of Morgan Gibbs-White and Vitinha behind him.

Both players have starred in recent weeks with the latter playing a vital hand in the win over West Brom. Gibbs-White, meanwhile, scored his first Premier League goal against Brighton just over a week ago.

On this occasion, though, Vitinha was disappointing.

Opportunities had been few and far between for the 21-year-old since he arrived at Molineux on loan but he’s been handed several chances now in the final weeks of the season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-rumours-and-news-soumare-dias-dembele-marques-nuno-santo” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer rumours and news!”]

A tricky character, the Portuguese had provided five key passes and three dribbles in the two outings with West Brom and Brighton.

Yet, that guile and creativity was missing in north London on Sunday. His performance was described as “poor” by Wolves reporter Tim Spiers at full time and it’s easy to see why.

Vitinha’s numbers were down considerably from what we’ve come to expect as he was hauled off just after the hour mark having made just one key pass. On top of that, the youngster failed to even attempt a dribble, a statistic completely out of character.

He produced just 14 passes and took fewer touches (30) than goalkeeper Rui Patricio (31).

The loanee did prevail in two of his three defensive duels but in terms of offering a threat to the Spurs goal, he left plenty to be desired.

Vitinha has caught the eye of late, so much so that Wolves could utilise their option to buy the promising Porto midfielder in the summer.

That said, he’ll need to show more than he did at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; this was a rare troubled display.

AND in other news, Wolves can save millions by unleashing rarely-seen 21 y/o, he’s a “Rolls-Royce”…

AVFC: Fans react as Grealish’s agent speaks out

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been sharing their concern after Jack Grealish’s agent spoke out regarding the midfielder’s future.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a Villa Park exit in recent months, with Manchester City thought to be after his signature this summer.

Grealish only signed a new five-year deal with the club back in September, but it seems as if City will launch a big-money bid for the attacking midfielder, should they win the Champions League later this month.

Speculation appears to be growing ahead of the upcoming transfer window, and Grealish’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, addressed the player’s future.

Talking to Sky Sports, Barnett admitted the midfielder loves the club, however, he added in a dreaded ‘but’, claiming they will have to wait and see how things pan out over the summer.

“He loves Villa but I think we just have to wait and see how things pan out. At the moment he is a Villa player and he has no thoughts about anything else.”

Their post received plenty of interaction, with these Villa supporters sharing their concern at Barnett’s future comments.

Fry says FSG must rebuild Klopp trust

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has told Football FanCast that Jurgen Klopp will need backing in the summer transfer window by Liverpool’s owners if he is to learn to trust them again.

The Reds were, of course, at the centre of the European Super League storm at the beginning of last week.

Along with Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City, Liverpool attempted to form a breakaway league that would have taken the place of the Champions League.

It also led to the prospect of the Reds being excluded from the Premier League, and led to furious fan protests from across the country.

Klopp gave an interview to Sky Sports before their clash with Leeds United, when the Super League was still on the table, and could not hide his displeasure, insisting his previous opposition to such a league had not wavered.

Fry thinks that FSG’s decision to involve the club in the plans will have severely affected the trust Klopp has in the owners, and believes the club will have to spend this summer to help rebuild that relationship.

He told FFC: “He’s got a great relationship with everybody and I think no matter what, it has soured that, however he is a football man and if they back him in football terms, i.e. his recruitment in the summer, which he’ll have to do some, I think he’ll be alright.

“But I’m not sure he’ll trust them the way he trusted them before this came out, I’m not sure any manager will.”
