Crystal Palace: Luka Milivojevic out of Newcastle game

Crystal Palace will be without club captain Luka Milivojevic against Newcastle United this evening, Matt Woosnam reports.

The Lowdown: Milivojevic under Vieira

Milivojevic has struggled for regular game time under Patrick Vieira this season, starting just eight Premier League games.

The central midfielder, who Roy Hodgson labelled as ‘outstanding’, has been an unused substitute in 12 top-flight fixtures and has been limited to just 18 appearances in all competitions.

The 31-year-old, who will be entering the final 12 months of his Selhurst Park contract in the summer, did feature at Wembley on Sunday as a substitute, but he won’t be turning out this evening.

The Latest: Woosnam’s update

Woosnam took to Twitter on Tuesday to relay an update from Vieira regarding Milivojevic.

He shared details of a hamstring issue for the central midfielder, who will not travel with the squad as a result.

The Verdict: Options…

Milivojevic hasn’t been a regular this season, so Vieira shouldn’t be too worried about his absence this evening.

James McArthur and Cheikhou Kouyate got the nod from the off against Chelsea on Sunday, so that could once again be an option at St. James’ Park.

Jeffrey Schlupp has also featured as a central midfielder on a regular basis this season, so if Vieira wants to change things up, he could move into a central role which could allow Michael Olise to make a first start since his injury out wide.

David Hussey clings to Test dreams

David Hussey has not given up on his ambition of playing Test cricket, despite losing his Cricket Australia contract during the off-season

Brydon Coverdale07-Oct-2010David Hussey has not given up on his ambition of playing Test cricket, despite losing his Cricket Australia contract during the off-season. Although the incumbent Test No. 6 Marcus North is wobbling, time is against Hussey, who at 33 is already three years older than his brother Michael was when he made his long-awaited Test debut back in 2005.But while younger men such as Usman Khawaja and Callum Ferguson are on the selection panel’s radar, Hussey continues to pile up runs at domestic level. He was the leading run scorer in the Sheffield Shield last summer and he hopes that if he can repeat the effort this season he might make the selectors think again.”I still think there’s a massive opportunity to play Test cricket and one-day cricket for Australia,” Hussey told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve done reasonably well in Twenty20 cricket so hopefully that stands me in good stead for one-day selection. In terms of Test cricket, all I can do is keep making runs and hopefully become the leading run scorer in Sheffield Shield cricket again.”Despite a formidable first-class record of more than 11,000 runs at an average in the mid-50s, Hussey is often pigeon-holed as a limited-overs specialist. It’s a description he has always disliked, although for the time being Twenty20 is the only format in which he is part of Australia’s side. However, Hussey’s most recent one-day international appearance resulted in a century against Scotland last August, and he is hopeful of a return to the 50-over squad. He is one of several fringe ODI batsmen aiming for a place in Australia’s World Cup title defence next February, after he was a key player in helping Australia reach the ICC World Twenty20 final earlier this year.”It’s the ultimate in one-day cricket, playing against the best in a World Cup,” Hussey said. “For me, I desperately want to be part of it. I’ve never been part of a World Cup before, so I know I want to put every foot right to gain selection.”

New sports minister Hugh Robertson has given a strong hint that the Conservative government will abandon plans to put home Ashes Tests back on free-to-air TV.The previous Labour government appeared to be backing proposals to return cricket to terrestrial TV, which created much opposition from the ECB and counties which feared a major loss of income, but when a decision wasn’t made before the general election there was always a chance the plans would change.Robertson also suggested that the current tough economic conditions mean that sporting bodies should be allowed to maximise their revenues, although he urged them to look at income streams away from the multi-million pound world of TV rights.”The previous Government did this for political purposes but then didn’t include it in their manifesto which is interesting,” Robertson told the Wisden Cricketer website. “Since then the economic situation has deteriorated quite sharply. Big public expenditure cuts will impact in sport so the way to equalise that is to give them [governing bodies] the freedom to market their own rights.”Since 2006 all live England cricket in the UK has been shown on BSkyB with highlights of home internationals available on Five. The recent IPL was shown on ITV4, a digital channel which is available over free platforms.

James Harris claimed figures of 5 for 62 as Glamorgan beat Northamptonshireby an innings and four runs to wrap up their third County Championship winof the season and move up to second in the Division Two table. It took the Welsh county only 22.5 overs of the fourth and final day to achievevictory in Cardiff and seal back-to-back championship wins for the firsttime in six years. The win, which saw Northamptonshire lose their last six wickets in the space of17 overs, sets up an intriguing clash next week between the Welsh side andGloucestershire, who are just a point behind Glamorgan in third.Glamorgan eased to victory 20 minutes before lunch to take 23 points from thefixture, while the visitors had to settle for just three. Glamorgan still had plenty of work to do to achieve victory going into the final day with Northamptonshire resuming their second innings on 126 for 4 – still needing 71 to avoid an innings defeat.David Sales and night watchman David Lucas looked relatively untroubled in theearly going until David Harrison broke through in the sixth over of the day. Harrison produced a fine ball that nipped back between bat and pad to knock over Sales’ off stump. And that opened the door for Glamorgan as the remaining five wickets fell atregular intervals during the morning session. Andrew Hall fell lbw to Harris not offering a shot and then Jim Allenby struck twice in an over to have both Nicky Boje and Lucas, who had made a defiant 32, also trapped leg before.Lee Daggett lasted just two balls before becoming Allenby’s third victim, caught at second slip by Jamie Dalrymple. James Middlebrook and Jack Brooks looked as if they may avoid an innings defeat before Harris struck to have Brooks caught behind.

Barbados track should help top order – McCullum

Brendon McCullum has said tracks in Barbados, the venue for New Zealand’s first Super Eights clash against South Africa on Thursday, should give his team’s top-order batsmen a better opportunity to post bigger scores.”I think the wickets in Barbados will be a little bit quicker and it will present an opportunity for us top-order batsmen to play with a little freedom as well and hopefully we will see one, or two, or three of the top four go on and make some sizeable totals in the next few games,” McCullum said. “The pitches in Guyana were a little more conducive to the slower bowling which probably doesn’t suit out batsmen quite as much but while it wasn’t flash and wasn’t flamboyant we got the job done in both games. And at the end of the day that is all you can ask for.”McCullum said South Africa present a different challenge compared to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, whom New Zealand beat in the first round. “South Africa’s a quality team, everyone knows that. We’ve all seen how good they are in all three forms of the game and in Twenty20 they’ve got some dangerous players right through the line-up and they offer a different challenge to what Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have offered us so far with a bit more predominant seam attack,” he said. “Having said that they have a couple of quality spinners as well.”The star player for New Zealand this tournament has been McCullum’s brother Nathan. His all-round show against Sri Lanka clinched a thrilling win for his team and he followed it up by taking 3 for 16 against Zimbabwe. McCullum said his brother’s success was important for New Zealand’s progress in the tournament.”I’m pleased for him because I know how hard he has worked and I know how much he wants it and I know how much he loves playing for New Zealand,” he said. “He’s a vital member of our team at the moment in this form of the game and this country and certainly the role he has to play is going to play a big part in our ability to progress through this tournament.”

Celtic: Hoops still keen on Aaron Hickey

Celtic have been name-checked with an interest in Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey by Calciomercato.com.

The Lowdown: Hickey in Italy

Hickey, who shares the same agent as Hoops star David Turnbull, has been in Italy for just over a year now. He left Hearts for Bologna in a deal worth just £1.53m and has gone on to make 32 appearances – 20 of which have come this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-20/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Capable of playing as a left-back or left-midfielder, the 19-year-old, labelled as a player with ‘quality’ by Bologna manager Sinisa Mihajlovic, has scored five Serie A goals in 2021/22 after being linked with a move to Celtic over the summer.

The Hoops valued Hickey at £4m compared to Bologna’s £8m asking price, but it seems as if they’re still keen on his services heading into 2022.

The Latest: Late-night news

Calciomercato.com shared a story late on Thursday evening regarding Hickey.

They claimed that the defender has ended up in the sights of Burnley, Celtic and Manchester City, with his current deal running until 2024.

The Verdict: Left-back wanted

Ange Postecoglou seemingly has his eyes set on bringing in a new left-back in the New Year, presumably to challenge Greg Taylor.

Barnsley’s Callum Styles and Hibernian’s Josh Doig are just two names that have been mentioned in recent weeks, and it appears as if the Hoops are still keeping tabs on Hickey.

Reo Hatate looks set to move to Parkhead in January, however, he is reportedly viewed as a midfield addition, even though he can play at left-back.

On that basis, you’d expect that the Hoops could launch a move for Styles, Doig or Hickey over the coming weeks, and should one arrive, Celtic could then look to move on outcast Boli Bolingoli, who has hardly featured this season and was linked with an exit over the summer.

Preece predicts Chukwuemeka start

Carney Chukwuemeka will make just his second start of the season for Aston Villa against Burnley on Saturday, The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has predicted.

The lowdown

Chukwuemeka’s only previous Premier League start this term came in the 1-1 draw with Brentford back in August.

He then watched on from the sidelines until returning to the fray as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat against Manchester City at the start of this month.

The 18-year-old’s runout at Norwich City in midweek only lasted seven minutes, but it was enough time for him to tee-up Ollie Watkins for a late goal.

Chukwuemeka, who’s been on Villa’s books since 2016, is only valued at £2.25million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

Preece thinks that Ashley Young could drop out of the starting line-up, pointing out that the 36-year-old has played 220 minutes in the space of ten days.

Jacob Ramsey could be pushed into a left wing position, but he reckons it’s more likely that Gerrard will turn to Chukwuemeka following his ‘brilliant’ assist against Norwich.

The verdict

In truth, Chukwuemeka didn’t make too much of an impression against Brentford. He only completed 13 passes during his 63 minutes on the pitch, and he failed to register a shot or create a chance (via SofaScore).

But having caught the eye at Carrow Road, he could well be in line for gametime over the busy festive period. Villa are due to play four matches in the next 15 days, and that could force Gerrard to rotate.

What’s more, handing opportunities to the ‘supremely gifted’ and ‘imposing’ youngster may convince him that Villa Park is the best place for him.
