Arsenal have signed a "magical" star who looks like a new Saka-type player

Over the last three seasons, Arsenal have been within touching distance of ending their two-decade drought for a Premier League title under Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners last claimed title glory way back in 2004, with a generation of supporters unable to personally experience the heights achieved in the years prior.

In recent years, the club have shown glimpses of ending such an extended wait, but have been unable to cross the line and end a campaign in top spot.

Arteta’s men have finished the last three seasons in second place, but will be hoping to go one better this time around after the hierarchy backed him with over £200m worth of new additions.

However, despite the heavy spending from the board, one player already in the ranks at the Emirates could offer the solution to their recent inability to jump the final hurdle.

Why Saka could lead Arsenal to title glory in 25/26

Winger Bukayo Saka has been a crucial member of the Arsenal squad over the last couple of years, even cementing his place as a regular starter under Arteta.

The Englishman has risen through the academy ranks and showcased his worth, subsequently reaching unthinkable heights in the club’s hunt for title glory.

The 24-year-old has since racked up 270 senior appearances for the Gunners, registering 144 combined goals and assists in the process – an average of 0.53 per 90.

He missed a huge chunk of last campaign through injury, restricting him to just 37 appearances in all competitions, but it didn’t stop him from achieving a total of 25 goal contributions.

Such numbers weren’t enough for Arteta to claim any form of silverware, but his return to full fitness in 2025/26 will only improve the club’s chances of success.

His emergence through the youth ranks has highlighted the impressive work done by all the staff behind the scenes, which could allow players to emulate his success at the Emirates.

The Arsenal star who’s already a Saka-type player

Over the last couple of months, Arsenal fans have found a new reason to be excited, with teenager Max Dowman making his mark on the first-team despite being just 15.

He made his first senior appearance for the Gunners in the 5-0 triumph over Leeds United at the Emirates, featuring for just under half an hour but still having a huge impact.

The youngster won a penalty late on in the contest, handing Viktor Gyokeres the chance to net his second goal for the club, already showcasing his ability to torment the opposition despite his tender age.

Given his immediate impact in North London, there’s no denying that Dowman has a huge future at the club, but it’s crucial Arteta and co manage the expectations placed upon him.

However, the route of being in the academy and making the jump to the senior squad isn’t as simple for others, with Eberechi Eze one player who’s demonstrated just that in recent years.

He spent time in the youth ranks during the early years of his career, before being let go and making a name for himself at Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The Gunners subsequently forked out a deal worth £67.5m for his signature this summer, with the hope he can become as crucial as Saka in the immediate future.

Eze, who’s been labelled “magical to watch” by Paul Hall, has glaring similarities to the aforementioned star, with the attacker already being comparable to his compatriot.

In his first eight games back in North London, the 27-year-old has already showcased his creative ability, laying on two assists in his first five Premier League outings.

However, Eze has also shown that he’s capable of starring alone, already netting his first goal for the club in the recent Carabao Cup clash against Port Vale.

Both traits have seen Saka become a real fan-favourite in North London, with the winger undoubtedly a key part of any potential success the club could achieve this campaign.

As for the new summer addition, he could also follow suit if he continues his excellent start to life at the Emirates – subsequently adding a new dimension to Arteta’s already potent front line.

Lights on for Jamaica? Cricket West Indies aims for day-night Australia Test

If it goes ahead as a pink-ball Test, it would just be the second staged in West Indies

Cricket West Indies officials are hopeful that Sabina Park in Jamaica will be able to host its first day-night Test when Australia visit for the third match of their series in July.Tickets for the series went on sale earlier this week and the third Test is listed as a day-night encounter, with a 1.30pm local start time, following two red-ball matches in Barbados and Grenada. However, making it a pink-ball Test remains dependent on the completion of floodlight upgrade works to bring the venue up to international standards.Sabina Park has never hosted any day-night international cricket due to the poor quality of the lights.Cricket Australia is supportive of the Test being a day-nighter and it’s understood officials will visit Jamaica as part of a pre-tour inspection this month. Australia have never played a day-night Test overseas.”The Australians have agreed for it to be a day-night Test match,” Chris Dehring said at a press conference on Monday. “It is of course subject to the new lighting system that’s being implemented at Sabina Park, that it is finished in time and of course to specification”We have in place a very strong monitoring and support system to help the Jamaica Cricket Association and the Jamaican government achieve this. We are certainly looking forward to hosting the very first day-night match.”0:47

Shamar Joseph on winning men’s debutant of the year

The President of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Dr Donovan Bennett, told in February that the initial hope had been to have the lights installed by January but there had been delays.”We are supposed to get the lights from our local supplier who will source them from a manufacturer in England,” he said. “There were some technical challenges because while we could have gotten cheaper lights from China, they were too heavy for the existing stands at Sabina Park. The wind forces on the pylons would have been a major issue.”West Indies has previously hosted one day-night Test, against Sri Lanka in Barbados in 2018.Last year, they handed Australia their first defeat in a day-night Test with the famous Shamar Joseph-inspired victory at the Gabba. Overall, Australia have won 12 of their 13 pink-ball Tests but they have all been played at home.”First and foremost, I do recall, if memory serves me right, the last time we beat Australia, it was a day-night Test,” Dehring said. “So it’s a maybe superficial example to use, but maybe it’s just a good omen.”For both teams, the series will be their first in the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle, with Australia heading to the Caribbean after June’s final of the current edition against South Africa at Lord’s.It will be Australia’s first Test tour of West Indies since 2015, which featured a Test at Sabina Park that the visitors won by 277 runs with Steven Smith making 199.

Camp Nou return is off! Barcelona confirm Champions League clash against PSG will not be played at iconic stadium in brutal blow for La Liga club

Barcelona have confirmed their highly anticipated Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain will not be played at the Camp Nou, with the iconic venue still not ready to host matches. Instead, the fixture will be staged at the stadium in Montjuic, extending the Blaugrana’s exile from their historic home.

  • Champions League tie moved away from Camp Nou

Barcelona have announced that their October 1 showdown with PSG in the Champions League will not take place at the redeveloped Camp Nou. Instead, the game will be staged at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, with a capacity of 55,000. The news comes just one day after the Blaugrana opened their European campaign with a 2-1 win over Newcastle, but they are still waiting on administrative permits to open their main stadium despite earlier optimism about a September return.

    Club statement confirms relocation

"FC Barcelona announces that the second match of the Champions League group stage, scheduled for Wednesday 1 October at 9 p.m. against Paris Saint-Germain, will be played at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.," the club said in an official statement.

"The Club continues to work intensively to obtain the necessary administrative permits for the opening of Spotify Camp Nou in the near future. FC Barcelona thanks its members and fans for their understanding and support during such a complex and exciting process as the return to the new Spotify Camp Nou."

  • Setbacks continue to delay Camp Nou reopening

The Catalan giants' homecoming has already been pushed back several times. Their September league games against Valencia and Getafe were moved to the Estadi Johan Cruyff due to missed deadlines, though UEFA restrictions meant it could not host European matches. While construction company Limak has nearly completed the stadium works, the club remain without the official completion certificate or the required licence from the City Council.

The news comes as a blow to Barcelona as they will now have to play all of their home Champions League matches at the Montjuic Stadium until the end of the League phase. With over 27,000 fans expected to miss out compared to a Camp Nou crowd, the relocation represents both a financial and sporting setback. Still, the club remain hopeful of being able to play La Liga games in their spiritual home by the end of September.

Sunderland now leading race to sign another Bundesliga winner after Xhaka

Having already welcomed Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen, Sunderland are now reportedly one of the frontrunners to sign another Bundesliga winner this summer.

Xhaka "proud" to be at Sunderland

It sums up Sunderland’s summer that they welcomed a player of Xhaka’s calibre this week. It is the ultimate statement from a newly-promoted side and the type that signals their intent to do more than just survive at the first time of asking.

The former Arsenal man, who won the Bundesliga unbeaten with Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023/24 season, joins the likes of Simon Adingra and Habib Diarra on the list of incomings at the Stadium of Light in an impressive summer of business.

After sealing his return to the Premier League for the first time since leaving Arsenal in 2023, Xhaka told Sunderland’s official website: “I’m very proud to be here.

“When I spoke to the Club, I was excited and I felt the energy, and the mentality that all the people and players have. It’s exactly what I wanted, and I have a very good feeling.

“We are back to where this Club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history. I feel that I’m ready to help the team with my experience but with quality as well.

Sunderland's most expensive signings of all time

Who is the Black Cats’ record addition?

ByCharlie Smith Sep 5, 2025

“We need to find ourselves on the pitch, but I don’t think this will be a big problem. It’s been a long time to wait, but I’m here now and I’m looking forward to it.”

That said, one Bundesliga may not be enough to satisfy the Black Cats this summer. According to recent reports, they’re now also among the frontrunners to sign a player that Xhaka already knows well.

Sunderland frontrunners to sign Amine Adli

According to TeamTalk, Sunderland are now frontrunners to sign Amine Adli from Bayer Leverkusen alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ahead of West Ham United, both clubs are reportedly the most active in the race to sign the 25-year-old Bundesliga-winning winger ahead of next season.

Despite already welcoming Adingra and Chemsdine Talbi to boost their flanks, Sunderland have now set their sights on a more experienced option and one who could provide ample cover if both Adingra and Talbi are selected for AFCON duties midway through next season.

Whilst Adli’s output undoubtedly needs improving, he stands out as the type of winger who could step in for Adingra when AFCON arrives. His take-on success particularly represents a player who is capable of creating something out of nothing, albeit without the end product as things stand.

Dubbed “extremely agile” by Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes, the 25-year-old – at the right price – would be another impressive signing by the Black Cats. Whether they beat Wolves in the race for his signature remains to be seen, however.

Wolves agree deal to sign "athletic" Ait-Nouri replacement; medical booked

Kickstarting their summer business and welcoming a replacement for Rayan Ait-Nouri, Wolverhampton Wanderers have now reportedly agreed a deal to sign their third arrival of the window.

Wolves' transfer window so far

Like much of the Premier League’s bottom half, Wolves have endured a fairly quiet transfer window this summer. Despite losing both Matheus Cunha and Ait-Nouri in big-money deals, the Midlands club have failed to welcome an overhaul of fresh faces. Instead, just the two have arrived in the form of Fer Lopez and, most recently, Jhon Arias.

After becoming the latest to arrive, Arias said: “Of course you can’t deny that there are great clubs in England, with a lot of power. But I also believe a lot in Wolverhampton.

“It’s a project that was presented to me, with great players. I don’t even need to talk about André, who you know here from Brazil, or João Gomes, who played for Flamengo, I faced him a lot, I know what a great player he is. Only there you can see that there are many South Americans known from Brazilian football.

“So I believe in the cast they have, in the players they have, and in the coach, who is a guy with a sensational job. So I’m calm about what I’m going to face, knowing what they expect from me. I’ll arrive to give 100%, add to everything the club already has.”

Approach made: Wolves now make enquiry to sign "unbelievable" £15m striker

The Old Gold have made contact over a deal for a centre-forward, with Vitor Pereira looking to bolster his attacking options.

ByDominic Lund Jul 30, 2025

Wolves fans have every right to be excited by the South American’s arrival too. Just last season, Arias created as many as 13 goals whilst scoring four himself in all competitions for Fluminense and will now have the clinical Jorgen Strand Larsen in front of him to add to those numbers.

Meanwhile, with Cunha now arguably replaced, those in the Midlands have now turned their attention towards filling the role of Ait-Nouri ahead of next season.

Wolves agree deal to sign David Moller Wolfe

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have now agreed a deal to sign David Moller Wolfe from AZ Alkmaar and have already booked a medical for the left-back as he prepares to fly in and complete his move.

At 23 years old, it’s clear to see why Wolves turned towards Wolfe in search of replacing Ait-Nouri. The Norwegian’s attacking output particularly stands out, with three goals and seven assists in all competitions last season representing a player who could make sure that Pereira forgets all about his former star left-back.

Praised as “athletic” by analyst Ben Mattinson last summer, Wolfe is now destined to become Wolves’ third signing of the summer as the Premier League campaign draws closer and closer.

Alec Stewart takes up new advisor role in extension of Surrey career

Alec Stewart will retain his official role at Surrey into the new season after being appointed as the club’s new High-Performance Cricket Advisor from January 2025.Stewart, 61, last week completed his 11-year stint as the club’s director of cricket, after overseeing their third County Championship triumph in consecutive seasons, and the fourth of a tenure that began in 2013.He resigned from that full-time role for personal reasons, with his wife Lynn currently undergoing treatment for cancer – a situation that caused him to take a leave of absence in January 2023.However, the club have chosen not to appoint a direct replacement, a move they had hinted at earlier in the year when mooting a management restructure to fill the void he was set to leave.”You’ve got to understand this club,” Stewart said back in April, when the club’s thoughts first turned to succession planning. “That is a big thing: the expectation, the size of it, the perception of this place. Therefore, if you have been in and around this place… I think it gives you a real headstart, if you understand everything that is expected of Surrey and the Kia Oval.”Now, under the new arrangement, Stewart will work at the club for a fixed number of days a year, charged with overseeing the continued success of the men’s elite game alongside the men’s head coach Gareth Batty and club captain Rory Burns.Related

“Everyone knows my love of the club and what it means to me and therefore I’m very pleased that the club wanted me to continue in this new role that has been created,” he said.”With this new set-up, I firmly believe that we can continue the success at Surrey that we’ve seen in recent times. I look forward to continuing my working relationship with Gareth, Rory and the team.”A total of 12 cricketers have made England debuts during Stewart’s tenure at the club, nine of whom have come through the club’s Talent Pathway, which is more than at any other county in the country. These include Ollie Pope, England’s Test captain in the recent series against Sri Lanka, as well as Gus Atkinson and Jamie Smith, the two breakout stars of England’s 2024 summer.Stewart’s role in nurturing these players has been widely credited, with Pope – whom he first encountered as an Under-9s player – saying at the start of the summer he “couldn’t imagine” life at the Kia Oval without him.As a consequence, Stewart will continue to advise on the Surrey Talent Pathway, with the aim of maintaining the flow of talented cricketers who have the ability to represent the club across formats, and ultimately England.”We completely understood and accepted Alec’s decision to step back from his Director of Cricket role at the start of the season but we always wanted to retain his expertise and his impact at Surrey,” Oli Slipper, Surrey’s chair, said. “We’ve had excellent conversations with Alec around a common ground that worked for him and for the club and I’m thrilled to say that we have found a role that works for all parties.”Steve Elworthy, Surrey’s CEO, added: “Alec has played a pivotal role in the success of the club over many years, not just lifting trophies but the conveyor belt of talent that has progressed through the Talent Pathway. That he will continue to shape the men’s professional set up, albeit in a changed role, is brilliant for the club.”We will not be replacing Alec but will be looking to individuals already at the club to take on new responsibilities. The foundations of the success of the elite group have been built by Alec and we are very pleased that we will retain his support in the future.”His appointment means the Stewart family’s association with Surrey will extend into its eighth decade next season. Alec’s father Micky, after whom the pavilion at the Kia Oval is named, began his 18-year playing career at the club in 1954, before taking over as manager from 1979 to 1986.Stewart himself played for the club between 1981 and 2003, and had the main gate at the Vauxhall End renamed in his honour in 2006, while his brother Neil is a longstanding coach in the club academy.

Cummins makes history with back-to-back hat-tricks: 'Remembered this one'

Pat Cummins claimed his second hat-trick in three days, as Australia faced Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight, to become the fifth bowler to have two in men’s T20Is – and he remembered he was on one this time. After claiming a hat-trick against Bangladesh in Antigua, he repeated the feat across his last two overs in St Vincent. With the last ball of the 18th over, he had Rashid Khan caught at long on, then with the first ball of the 20th removed Karim Janat the same way before Gulbadin Naib hoicked to deep midwicket amid Afghanistan’s last push for runs.”Yeah, remembered this one,” Cummins told the broadcaster between innings, in reference to him forgetting he was on a hat-trick against Bangladesh. “Crazy to get two in a row after playing 100 plus games for Australia.”He could have had four wickets in four balls – a feat achieved by Ireland’s Curtis Campher during the 2021 T20 World Cup – but David Warner missed a chance at deep square when Nangeyalia Kharote swung to the leg side.Cummins joined Lasith Malinga, Tim Southee, Serbia’s Mark Pavlovic, Malta’s Waseem Abbas as having two T20I hat-tricks. On the question of the short time between them, Pavlovic took his on consecutive days in 2023, although had played three matches in that time.Cummins became the second player to take a hat-trick in consecutive international matches after Wasim Akram who did it in consecutive Tests against Sri Lanka in March 1999. Jimmy Matthews had hat-tricks in each innings of a Test match against South Africa in 1912 with both coming on the same day.
