Dean Elgar, South Africa’s former Test captain and stalwart opening batter, will play his last international series against India this summer. Elgar, 36, announced his decision to retire from international cricket after the New Year’s match, which is scheduled to start on January 3 in Cape Town.If in the playing XI for both Tests against India, Elgar will finish on 86 Tests in a career that has spanned 12 years. “Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate! Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams,” he said in a statement. “It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have.”The Cape Town Test will be my last. My favourite stadium in the world. A place I scored my first Test run against New Zealand and hopefully my last too.”With 5146 runs, Elgar is South Africa’s eighth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket – only eight have gone past 5000 runs – and 352 runs behind Mark Boucher, who is seventh on the list.ESPNcricinfo understands that Elgar was informed that he was not part of red-ball coach Shukri Conrad’s long-term plans. He has been linked with Essex as an overseas player for the 2024 season.Elgar’s decision means he will be unavailable for South Africa’s two-Test series in New Zealand, where they will be forced to send a makeshift side because several frontline players will be involved in the SA20 league. Elgar does not have an SA20 deal and would have been the most experienced player in the squad, and potentially even asked to captain in Temba Bavuma’s absence. Instead, Titans’ batter Neil Brand is expected to lead South Africa and partner Tony de Zorzi at the top of the order. Brand and de Zorzi opened the batting together for South Africa A against West Indies A in a recent three-match series.Asked ten days ago whether Elgar was considering ending his international career, CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe told ESPNcricinfo that “nothing has come to my table”, but would be meeting with players and their agents “over the next couple of weeks”. Nkwe has held several discussions in the interim and paid tribute to Elgar’s contributions over the years.”Dean Elgar represents a rare brand of cricketer in an age where everything is about innovation and power-hitting. He is a real old-school cricketer that can dig in, absorb and fight. I have no doubt the game will dearly miss him,” Nkwe said. “He has always given everything for his country and never showed any fear, no matter the opposition. He was always there to take on the challenge, leading as captain when the country needed him most.”Dean Elgar led South Africa in 17 Tests, winning nine of them•AFP/Getty Images

Elgar made his debut in Perth on South Africa’s tour of Australia in 2012, when they were ranked No. 1 in the world, and became the 38th player to record a pair on debut – a list that stands at 45 now – but scored a century in his third match and went on to record 13 hundreds, against all Test opposition other than Pakistan and Zimbabwe. His favourite opponents were Sri Lanka, against whom he scored a match-winning hundred in Galle in 2014, followed by two more centuries in 2017 and 2021.Elgar stood in as captain for Faf du Plessis, who was on paternity leave, for the first Test of South Africa’s 2017 tour of England and again for two Tests against Pakistan in 2019, and was named permanent captain of the Test side in mid-2021. He led South Africa to series wins in the West Indies and against India at home, and drew a series against New Zealand in early 2022, which saw them top the World Test Championship (WTC) table at the time. But away losses to England and Australia in 2022-23 meant South Africa missed out on the WTC final earlier this year. Elgar was replaced as captain when there was a reshuffle of the coaching staff in February but continued to play under Bavuma. It is understood that Elgar was unhappy with the decision to be stood down but accepted a new central contract at the end of March. With South Africa only due to play two Test series in the 2023-2025 WTC cycle, Elgar felt his Test career would be limited by the schedule and sources have confirmed he wanted to finish on a high at home.

Pakistan players set to receive 'historic' hike in new contracts

Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi could be in line to earn as much as PKR 4.5 million a month as a retainer

Osman Samiuddin04-Aug-2023Pakistan’s players are set to receive “historic” increases in their new central contracts, even as negotiations on their participation in overseas T20 leagues continue. Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, in the top category of contracts, could be in line to earn as much as PKR 4.5 million (USD 15,900 approx) a month as a retainer, four times as much as was on offer to top players in last year’s contracts. The new contracts are likely to do away with last year’s format where red- and white-ball players were split, and return to previous years with four different categories of players. Babar, Rizwan and Afridi, as captain and cross-format stars, will be in category A.Category B players are in line to receive in the region of PKR 3 million (USD 10,600 approx), while those in category C and D will get between PKR 0.75-1.5 million (USD 2650-5300 approx). The retainer values, if signed off on, represent the biggest increase in years, as part of an overall offering that was, according to officials, “historic”.The hike is offset somewhat by the sharp depreciation of the Pakistan rupee in the last year, as well as an economy in which inflation has been spiralling out of control. But even accounting for that, the retainer increase is more than double, at least across the top category. It also comes a year before the ICC’s new revenue distribution model kicks in, in which the PCB’s annual earnings of PKR 9.6 billion approx (USD 34 million) are more than double what they were over the last ICC rights cycle.Related

That will make a significant difference for players who have been among the lowest paid internationally, a position exacerbated by often restrictive policies around playing in foreign T20 leagues. Pakistan’s players are not allowed to play in the IPL and their participation in other leagues has been subject traditionally to changing policies each time a new administration comes in.Only last year, leading players delayed signing the contracts because they were unhappy with the restrictive terms around playing in leagues, under the then administration of Ramiz Raja. That was the second time since 2019 that players had expressed unhappiness with terms, which is as close to a labour dispute as is possible in a landscape without a players’ association. The number of leagues players will be allowed to participate in next year has not yet been finalised but is part of ongoing negotiations. As things stand, players in the top two categories are to be allowed one league other than the PSL, with those in the lower categories to be allowed more than one.But there is likely to be flexibility on the issue and that clause could change by the time the contracts are finalised. Usman Wahla, the PCB’s international director, and more recently Misbah-ul-Haq, as an advisor to Zaka Ashraf, have been leading discussions, talking to a group of senior players.Importantly, there is a recognition within the PCB that players who are not a part of these leagues are missing out on big, potentially life-changing earnings. In some cases, senior players in demand on the league circuit could make two to three times more per year from league deals than they do now. There is also an acknowledgement that, in terms of planning, the league circuit needs to be treated as a separate 12-month calendar and players’ commitments worked out accordingly. Najam Sethi, Ashraf’s predecessor as board head, had also been planning a more open policy with regard to leagues and had been negotiating with the ILT20 about the participation of Pakistan players this season. The ILT20 was a particularly thorny issue last season, the PCB demanding a fee from the league for each player who took part. Part of that was also because the ILT20 took place in a busy home season for Pakistan in which their best players were bound to be taking part.Domestic contracts will also be presented to players soon, with likely increased retainers as well as the prospect of enhanced earnings by playing in two first-class tournaments, one for regional teams and one for department-based sides.Final discussions are due to take place with players over the weekend, the results of which will be presented to Ashraf early next week.

Pré-estreia oficial do filme ’45 do segundo tempo’

Man Utd star left on a free & it's become a bigger mistake than McTominay

It is fair to say that this season has not gone to plan for Manchester United after yet another crushing defeat, this time at the hands of Fulham in the FA Cup.

The Red Devils were beaten on penalties by the Cottagers after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, as Andre Onana failed to save any penalties and Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee both missed from the spot.

Ruben Amorim has now lost ten of his 24 matches in charge of the club since he came in to replace Erik Ten Hag earlier this term, and the Europa League is the last available trophy for him to win to avoid a trophyless debut campaign.

As club legend Wayne Rooney said in the clip above, it was yet another disappointing result against Fulham when they had a great opportunity to progress.

Questions will be asked and fingers will be pointed when assigning blame over this season, but the recruitment department should be looked at.

United allowed a number of players to move on from Old Trafford and one star they may, now, regret cashing in on is central midfielder Scott McTominay.

Scott McTominay's form since leaving Man Utd

The Scotland international made the move to the Serie A and has not looked back, as he has caught the eye for Antonio Conte’s side in Italy this season.

McTominay has found the back of the net six times from an xG of 5.16 in 24 appearances in the Italian top-flight, whilst he has also created two ‘big chances’ and registered two assists for his team.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes (six) is the only central midfielder who has scored more than one goal for United in the Premier League, and the only one to manage more than one assist (two).

This suggests that the Red Devils are lacking another midfielder, alongside Bruno, who can chip in with goal contributions from the middle of the park, as McTominay has done for Napoli in the current campaign.

Scott McTominay

However, the Scottish star’s troubles out of possession remain an issue. He has lost 52% of his duels and only averaged 1.3 tackles per game, whilst five United central midfielders averaged more than 1.3 tackles per match in the top-flight.

There are, therefore, positives and negatives to his performances, but United could certainly have done with another player who could pop up with a goal against Fulham, as they scored once in 120 minutes at home.

Where Are They Now

Allowing the midfield academy graduate to move on from Old Trafford is far from the only recruitment mistake the club have made in recent seasons, as they may regret allowing long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea to walk away for nothing even more.

David De Gea's improved form

The Spanish shot-stopper was released on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 after he endured a frustrating final season in the Premier League with the Red Devils.

David de Gea misses penalty vs Villarreal

There is no hiding away from the fact that the experienced titan was not at his best that season. De Gea ended the top-flight campaign with -1.55 goals prevented and three errors that led to shots or goals in 38 appearances in the division.

This suggests that he conceded more goals than the average goalkeeper would be expected to based on the quality of shots that he faced, whilst the Spaniard also made too many unforced errors.

De Gea took a year away from the game in the 2023/24 campaign before signing for Italian side Fiorentina last summer, and he has thrived since his move to the Serie A.

As you can see in the table above, the 34-year-old colossus has performed far better in the Italian top-flight this season than he did in his last year at United.

This is why the Red Devils may regret allowing De Gea, who was once dubbed “phenomenal” by Rio Ferdinand, to walk away for nothing in 2023, particularly when you compare his form to Onana’s.

Why Man United should regret releasing De Gea

United swooped to sign the Cameroon international from Inter ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and it is fair to say that the shot-stopper has had his fair share of struggles in 18 months or so at Old Trafford to date.

Onana made one error that led to a goal and one that led to a shot in the Premier League last term and two errors that led to goals and two that led to shots in the Champions League.

De Gea made two errors that led to goals in his final Premier League campaign at the club, but he seems to have got those mistakes out of his system based on his form for Fiorentina.

Instead of ditching him at the first signs of trouble, United could have kept hold of the veteran and put their faith in him to turn his form around, as he has now done in Italy.

As you can see in the table above, the 28-year-old stopper has slightly underperformed with the shots against his goal, whilst he has also been far too error prone across the Premier League and the Europa League.

These statistics suggest that it may have been a mistake to let De Gea walk for nothing because the player they signed to replace him is now being outperformed by the veteran Spaniard, who has been in fantastic form for Fiorentina.

Therefore, letting De Gea leave for nothing was an even worse decision than the one to sell McTominay because his current form suggests that he would come in as a big upgrade on Onana, whilst the Scottish midfielder still struggles in some areas that current United midfielders excel in.

Sandeep Lamichhane set to be included in Nepal squad for tri-series

Lamichhane is currently out on bail, facing charges of alleged sexual coercion of another person

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Feb-2023Sandeep Lamichhane could be included in Nepal’s squad for their Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series at home in Kirtipur against Namibia and Scotland, in what would constitute his first appearance since his arrest last year. Lamichhane is currently out on bail, facing charges of alleged sexual coercion of another person. Nepal’s squad for the series is likely to be announced by February 10. His name is in a 14-man squad sent to the ICC for registration purposes – as the event is an ICC tournament – but that could still change when the squad is officially announced. His potential selection had been signposted after the Cricket Association of Nepal revoked his suspension last week. Lamichhane has been training with the team at a pre-series camp. The lifting of the suspension led to protests over the weekend in Nepal, calling for a boycott of the upcoming games against Namibia and Scotland. Cricket Scotland and Cricket Namibia issued statements, to say that Lamichhane’s availability was a matter for CAN and the ICC to consider.Related

And if Nepal were to go on tour, Lamichhane’s participation would depend on whether the court gave him permission for it or not.The suspension came into effect in September last year after an arrest warrant was issued against Lamichhane in Kathmandu. He was granted bail for the equivalent of around US$ 15,300 but was barred from leaving the country until the final verdict.Lamichhane, 22, is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the only one to have played in T20 leagues in most parts of the world, including in the IPL, the BBL, the PSL, the BPL, and the CPL. When the news of the arrest warrant came out, Lamichhane was in the West Indies with Jamaica Tallawahs, his CPL team. He returned to Nepal after that, and was taken into custody on October 6.He is also the world’s second-fastest bowler to 50 ODI wickets and third-fastest to 50 T20I wickets, and last played international cricket in August 2022, in the T20I series against Kenya. He was also Nepal’s captain at the time of the arrest warrant, a position he lost following his suspension. Rohit Paudel will lead Nepal in the series against Namibia and Scotland.

Então a cobertura in loco foi bem limitada.

Leeds now battling to hijack "gifted" in-demand Juventus target for Farke

Looking ahead towards potential promotion and the summer transfer window, Leeds United are now reportedly battling to sign an young centre-back ahead of Juventus.

Leeds transfer news

Those at Elland Road will be the last people to get ahead of themselves in the Championship, but even they can’t deny that Leeds’ promotion push has looked stronger than ever in recent weeks. With Sunderland awaiting on Monday evening, the Whites will have the chance to move as many as 10 points clear of the Black Cats, who sit fourth.

In fact, their push for promotion is going so well that a look towards the summer transfer window wouldn’t exactly be unwise. Whether it’s been Luton Town or the likes of Southampton in recent years, promoted sides have failed to prepare for the Premier League. Now, Leeds will be desperate to end that trend.

On that front, the rumours have certainly been coming thick and fast off the back of a quiet January transfer window, which includes those surrounding an impressive young centre-back.

"Special" Leeds target open to Elland Road move; thinks they'll be promoted

He could be a stunning piece of business for the Elland Road outfit if they can get a deal done.

According to The i Paper, Leeds are now battling to sign Koni De Winter for Daniel Farke this summer but face plenty of competition in the race to welcome the Genoa centre-back.

Among those also reportedly plotting summer swoops are Juventus, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United which could yet create a frantic race when the transfer window swings open.

Koni De Winter for Genoa.

Juventus could yet become Leeds’ greatest competitor in pursuit of De Winter, given that they sold the defender to Genoa last summer and could now look to make up for their mistake.

Leeds, meanwhile, could benefit in the same way that Bournemouth benfited from a Juventus discard when they welcomed Dean Huijsen, who has gone onto star ever since arriving last summer.

"Gifted" De Winter is Premier League ready

Originally shown the door at Juventus as a youngster, De Winter has quickly moved on and become an important player at Genoa to make the Turin giants consider bringing him back.

Aside from the interruption of an ill-timed injury, the 22-year-old has started all 14 Serie A games that he’s been available for and is no doubt a player on the rise. Whether that rise continues in Italy remains to be seen, however.

Even at Juventus, De Winter was one to watch and found himself at the centre of Antonio Mango’s praise, who clearly saw what the Italian giants did not when assessing the defender. The U23 scout dubbed the Belgian a “gifted footballer” in 2023 and has been proven right ever since.

By signing De Winter, Leeds would be making a statement of intent ahead of their potential return to the Premier League. They’ll be desperate to achieve what Luton, Southampton and potentially others have failed to do in recent years by becoming an established top-flight side once again.

Cheteshwar Pujara to play for Sussex in the 2023 season too

Cheteshwar Pujara will return to Sussex in 2023 after making a significant impact during his first season with the club this year.”I am glad to be back with Sussex for the 2023 season,” Pujara said in a statement released by the club. “I thoroughly enjoyed my last stint with the club last season, both on and off the field and I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s growth and success in the coming year.”Pujara made Sussex his fourth county after previous spells with Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, and made eight hundreds – including three doubles – for them across formats. He was their leading run-scorer in Division Two of the County Championship, with an aggregate of 1094 at 109.4 across 13 innings, and was the second-highest scorer across the 50-over Royal London Cup, making three hundreds as Sussex reached the semi-finals. He also deputised as captain.Sussex did not specify in their statement which formats Pujara would play, or for how long, but his availability will be dictated by his involvement in India’s Test squad and, possibly, the IPL. The club later clarified that they expect him to play Championship and 50-over cricket for them and added that he is due to arrive in time for the start of the season.Pujara remains an important part of India’s Test plans, top-scoring with 66 in their most recent game in the format against England in July. Their Test schedule is relatively sparse in 2023, but they are due to play a two-match series away against West Indies in July-August.He has not played an IPL game since 2014 but was part of Chennai Super Kings’ squad in 2021, and would miss the first two months of the county season if picked up in December’s auction.Keith Greenfield, Sussex’s performance director, said, “It is fantastic news that Cheteshwar will be returning in 2023. We all saw the class he showed with the bat and his performances, but he was also outstanding in our young dressing room as a world-class role model for them to follow.”Sussex are in the process of recruiting a new coach after Ian Salisbury left at the end of the 2022 season. James Kirtley acted as T20 coach throughout Salisbury’s tenure, but the club will return to a single head coach from 2023.

Warwickshire lose their way as trapdoor opens in madcap final hour

Dramatic top-order collapse reawakens fears of return to Division Two

David Hopps21-Sep-2022Warwickshire endured a nightmarish start to their second innings at the end of the second day to slip deeper into relegation trouble and give Gloucestershire hopes of their first Championship win of the season.A side that won the Championship last season by dint of gritty, earnest cricket, rushed headlong towards relegation with a frenzied batting display against Gloucestershire’s new-ball bowlers which saw them reach the close at 58 for 5, only 77 ahead. Without Alex Davies’ unbeaten 41, they would have been in a sorrier mess.Considering the shenanigans at Chelmsford, and to a lesser extent at the Ageas Bowl, it should be underlined that this has been a challenging, but reasonable enough September surface, offering plenty of encouragement for the new-ball bowlers, slow turn for the slow bowlers and some uneven bounce. More raised eyebrow than slap on the wrist. It has made for immensely watchable cricket, even if a three-day finish is on the cards.Warwickshire’s sporting director Paul Farbrace, who is stepping down at the end of the season, said: “It was a very tough last hour. There have been some crazy sessions and mad hours elsewhere in the country this week and it was our turn today. But Alex Davies showed some real fight to see it through to the close and, providing we can put on more runs and get to at least 150 tomorrow, we could still be okay. Anything above that and the pressure starts to swing the other way.”Gloucestershire’s return to Division One has been a galling experience, but the Bristol crowd was besides itself with pleasure as Tom Price, surprisingly entrusted with the new ball at the Ashley Down End in preference to Ajeet Singh Dale, took four wickets in his first three overs and must have looked on in wonder as he delivered his bustling fast-medium to an array of four slips.Price, a 22-year-old who cut his cricket teeth in Great and Little Tew CC in the Cherwell League, now has 25 wickets at only 21.08 for the season and considering Gloucestershire’s travails has pronounced himself their breakthrough player of the season. Apart from the left-arm spinner, Zafar Gohar, who has had a sturdy season in adversity, and Ryan Higgins, who has not been seen since Cheltenham and is returning to Middlesex, no other Gloucestershire bowler has taken more than 15 wickets. With Kent and Somerset thriving midway through the penultimate round of matches, defeat for Warwickshire could well plunge them into the bottom two. The draught of relegation will also be reaching Yorkshire, who are under the cosh against the leaders at at Kia Oval. Indications are that there will be much left to play for in the final week.Price’s most meaningful moment arguably came with only his second delivery. Dom Sibley had batted through Warwickshire’s first innings for six-and-a-half hours for an unbeaten 120, but he made a second-ball duck second time around as Price seamed one back to win an lbw decision. He said afterwards that it was the dismissal that gave him hope – “he was the rock we could not get past on the first day” – but he felt he had bowled better first time around.Rob Yates dragged on against David Payne before Price could take up the challenge again. He won another lbw decision in his second over when Sam Hain, perhaps determined to escape the tortuous manner of his first innings, stepped across to leg to try to work the ball through the leg side.In his next over, the skipper, Will Rhodes, edged to the wicketkeeper as Price seamed one across him. Jayant Yadav was so offended by his third-ball nought – another keeper’s catch for James Bracey – that he gave the umpire a death stare for fully six seconds before making his way off the field. The umpire lived to tell the tale – and will probably tell it on an official form.Warwickshire had not identified the surface as a seam bowler’s paradise, quite the contrary. They bowled only 20 overs of pace in their 74.3 overs in the field, relying on the combined spin efforts of Yadav (who was excellent for his 5 for 90) and Danny Briggs (3 for 79) as they dismissed Gloucestershire for 255 to claim a paltry first-innings lead of 19.Gloucestershire’s familiar failings emerged once more as they lost half their side for 95. Ben Charlesworth received a snorter from Ryan Sidebottom, who was otherwise expensive, but there were some weak top-order dismissals against the spinners. Briggs defeated Miles Hammond’s attempts to advance and hit him down the ground, and Yadav, who is in his first spell in county cricket at 32, bowled Bracey as he lurched blindly at a straight, well-flighted delivery. Bracey began the season with 177 against Yorkshire, and briefly encouraged talk of an England return, but he has largely struggled since.A stand of 90 in 23 overs before Jack Taylor and Graeme van Buuren righted matters, Van Buuren entrusts largely to the back foot, and Yadav eventually hunted down his quarry, turning one to hit off stump as he laid back to cut. Taylor’s 71 from 106 balls was a typically free-spirited affair, a 50-over type of innings in a Championship relegation affair, adorned by five sixes, three of them down the ground against Yadav and two pumped into the Mounds Stand at deep midwicket off Briggs. They love him in Bristol, but prospects of some happy chatter over the tea interval departed when he edged Briggs to slip from what became the last ball of the session. It was still Warwickshire’s game. Their lead was 73 with three wickets to get. Complete the job and the match was as good as theirs. They reckoned without Gohar, one of the most unsung overseas players and one of the worthiest. His batting is always plucky and occasionally unorthodox. By the time Yadav bowled him, attempting a reverse sweep, his 55 from 82 balls had trimmed the lead to 19 and he might still have a part to play with the ball if Gloucestershire are finally to taste victory.
