Why Rajasthan aren't into the semi-finals just yet

With eight wins in ten games, Rajasthan Royals are sitting pretty at the top of the table. In all probability they’ll seal a place in the top four, but as things stand after 40 games of the IPL, there’s still a chance – however slim – that they won’t make the cut. Here’s one scenario which explains how they might still miss out on a semi-final slot:

  • Rajasthan have four matches to go, against Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Punjab. If they lose all four, they’ll remain on 16 points.
  • Mumbai are the only team to have played only nine games. Their five remaining ones are against Deccan, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan and Bangalore. Win all, and they leapfrog to the top of the table with 20 points. Even with one loss, they’ll be among the top teams with 18 points.
  • Kolkata have four games to go, against Chennai, Rajasthan, Delhi and Punjab. Four wins will prop them up to 18 points.
  • Chennai have played ten too, and will face Kolkata, Bangalore, Rajasthan, and Deccan. Lose the first and win the next three, and Chennai will finish with 18 points.
  • Saturday’s win against Delhi pushed Punjab to second place with 14 points in ten games. Their remaining games are against Mumbai, Deccan, Kolkata and Rajasthan. If they beat Deccan and Rajasthan, Punjab will join Kolkata and Chennai on 18 points. In such a scenario, Mumbai will top the table with 20 points, while Kolkata, Chennai, and Punjab will all be tied on 18. Rajasthan will then slip to a clear fifth place with 16 points, and will be out of the reckoning for a semi-final berth.

Possible points table according to the results above
    Team Played Won Lost Points
    Mumbai 14 10 4 20
    Kolkata 14 9 5 18
    Chennai 14 9 5 18
    Punjab 14 9 5 18
    Rajasthan 14 8 6 16
    Delhi 14 6 8 12
    Deccan 14 3 11 6
    Bangalore 14 2 12 4

Even if the results don’t go exactly to plan, there are still possibilities of five teams finishing on 16 or more points, with a couple of them tied on 16. In that case, net run rates will come into the picture to break the deadlock. Also, if Rajasthan beat Mumbai but the other results go according to the scenario above, there’ll still be five teams tied on 18 points, again bringing the net run rate into play.

  • Ashwin touched by Rohit's 'beautiful' gesture in Rajkot: 'I'd give my life for him on the field'

India allrounder opens up on what happened during those 48 hours when he had to leave the team in the middle of a Test to visit his mother in hospital

R Ashwin on Rohit Sharma: “He’s an outstanding leader with a heart of gold”•BCCI

An emotional R Ashwin has expressed his immense gratitude towards India’s “outstanding” captain Rohit Sharma for his leadership and “heart of gold” during last month’s Rajkot Test against England.Ashwin, who took his 500th wicket and played his 100th Test during the series against England, had to temporarily withdraw from the third Test in Rajkot because of a health emergency concerning his mother. He left his team-mates after play on the second day and rejoined them late on the fourth day.”It all kicked off on the second day, though it’s a bit blurry now,” Ashwin said on his Youtube channel. “I was on 499 wickets I think, and was hoping to reach the milestone in the second Test in Vizag, but it wasn’t to be. But on day two in Rajkot, I finally got Zak Crawley. It wasn’t a particularly great ball, but I finally got to the landmark.””After the end of play, I had agreed to do some interviews and went to the press area. I’d just got my 500th wicket, so was expecting a call from my wife or father. I was a bit surprised not to hear from them, since it was almost 7 PM. But I figured they must be busy with interviews and responding to congratulatory messages, so didn’t think much of it.”After being unable to reach my parents, I finally got hold of my wife on the phone. Her voice was breaking. I told her I was just about to get into the shower, and she asked me to go somewhere alone, away from my team-mates. She said that my mother had collapsed after a severe headache.”Related

R Ashwin: 'If I am under pressure, I try to put the opposition under five times as much'

Ashwin said he couldn’t immediately process the news, particularly with the Test, and series, in the balance. England had ended the second day on 207 for 2 in response to India’s 445, with the series tied 1-1.”I just blanked out. I don’t remember what I did, but I was crying,” Ashwin said. “I didn’t know what to ask her. I didn’t want anyone to see me cry – it was an instinctive reaction. I just sat alone in my room, not knowing what to do.”On one hand, I knew I had to go back home, but there was also the thinking of how can I let my team-mates down. I couldn’t strike that balance. I didn’t know what to tell the coach or captain. I was in the XI, and if I go home now, we’d be left with only 10 players, giving England the advantage.”But I was also just thinking about my mother. And when was the last time I spoke to her. In my mind, I knew I had to go back home and see her, but the doctors were informing us that nobody was allowed in to meet her.”R Ashwin with his family on the morning of his 100th Test•BCCI

It was at this point of time, Ashwin said, that Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid came into the dressing room, and made his decision a straightforward one.”I think since I wasn’t answering my phone, my wife must have called Rohit and Dravid to tell them the news. Rohit came in, saw me thinking, and just said, ‘what are you doing? You need to leave right away. Please just pack your bags and go'”.The next challenge was finding a quick way back home, but with no flights to Chennai scheduled till the next morning, Ashwin got help from an unexpected source.”I must say a big thank you to Cheteshwar Pujara as well, who spoke to a lot of people and arranged for a chartered flight for me.”Our team physio Kamlesh Jain is a good friend. Rohit told Kamlesh to accompany me on the flight to Chennai, despite Kamlesh being one of only two physios in the team.”I told Kamlesh, ‘it’s ok, please stay back’. But when I went to the board the flight, Kamlesh and a security person was already there. Not just that, but Rohit regularly kept calling Kamlesh to check in on me and see how I’m doing. That deeply moved me. In a selfish society like ours, that man who decides to take a moment to think of someone else’s wellbeing, he’s truly great.”Rohit is a special person, an outstanding leader, with a golden heart. I saw it first-hand. I’d give my life for him on the field, that’s the kind of captain he is. It’s because of these qualities that he’s won so many titles, including five IPLs. I pray to God that Rohit achieves even more in his career and life.”Ashwin’s stay in Chennai was brief, and after being informed his mother would make a recovery, he knew he had to re-join his team-mates in Rajkot. “My mother was initially surprised to see me. And that’s the difference in parents of previous generations and today’s. She only wanted what’s best for me. And wanted me to be with the team. Even in those circumstances, she kept thinking of me.”With the help of BCCI secretary Jay Shah, Ashwin was able to take another chartered flight from Chennai to Rajkot, and eventually linked up with his team-mates on day four. India won the Rajkot Test by 434 runs to take a 2-1 lead and eventually won the series 4-1 in Dharamsala with Ashwin taking nine wickets in his 100th Test.

Kehl on Silva's injury crisis said: "Fabio suffered a muscle injury in the summer and is still recovering. Therefore, he and we will use the international break to get him fit enough to help us. We'll have to see how long it takes."

The striker has also been absent from Cruz Azul training recently, reportedly without the club’s permission, signaling he’s no longer in manager Nicolás Larcamón’s plans.

‘No league in the world has grown like this’ – USMNT icon Tony Meola on the state of MLS, how the 1994 World Cup launched it and the expected impact of 2026 tournament

GOAL Convo: The former U.S. goalkeeper discussed MLS's beginnings, what the 2026 World Cup could mean for the league

The growth of soccer in America has surpassed anything Tony Meola could have imagined when he was playing in the 1994 World Cup.

"If I had a nickel for every time someone tells me '30 years [ago] I became a fan because of 1994,' I'd be on an island somewhere working on my golf game and fishing game," Meola jokingly reflected to GOAL.

The USMNT legend, who started four games as a fresh-faced, ponytailed goalkeeper in that tournament, noted that the expectations and roles for American players were vastly different compared to today.

"We always joke about the fact that we had two jobs, right? We had to play. You had to get ready for the game and get ready for trying to make a World Cup team," he said. "But then you had to promote the sport. Because the sport clearly wasn't at the level that it is now."

In 1994, American soccer fans had few ways to engage with the sport. There weren’t dozens of streaming packages to follow global leagues, and domestic players struggled to find professional opportunities. That began to change with the advent of Major League Soccer, which emerged as part of the U.S. hosting the world’s biggest sporting event.

"There was a rallying cry, or a belief that at least some of us had to stay in the U.S. to try and help promote the game, to try and help move it forward, you know?" he said. "And there were opportunities for players. It was a new league. No one knew about it. No one had ever seen it before, and the hope was that we would be in the forefront of having it grow."

Now in its 30th season, MLS has exceeded expections. Meola, now 56, helped launch the league as a member of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

"If you'd have told me that it would look like this in 2025, I probably would have told you you were crazy," he said. "It's grown to a place that I don't think any of us could have ever imagined, at least not if you were part of 1996 and that group that came into the league."

With the 2026 World Cup now exactly a year away, Meola hopes MLS can take another major step forward.

The goalkeeper turned broadcaster discussed the league’s evolution and his hopes for what’s next in the latest GOAL Convo, a Q&A with central figures in the American soccer scene.

Getty Images SportON THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 1994 AND 2026

GOAL: It is exactly one year out from the 2026 World Cup kicking off. What are your thoughts on how things are shaping up and how it all compares to what you experienced in 1994?

MEOLA: Well, it's obviously exciting, right? One year out begins the count down right to the World Cup. And I can remember one year out from '94, obviously, we were training in Mission Viejo, California. And the excitement started to build. There are some similarities, for sure, but I think we're in a completely different spot here in the US than we were back then. Back then, we always joked about the fact that we had two jobs, right? We had to, we had to play. You had to get ready for the game and get ready for trying to make a World Cup team. But then you had to promote the sport, right? Because the sport clearly wasn't at the level that it is now, where now we've got Major League Soccer is established in the U.S. We continue to grow every day. So there's an awareness about soccer. So the players are in different circumstances. Now we're going to see how countries fill cities up and find ways to gather… It's going to be incredible.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportON THE LAUNCH OF MLS

GOAL: When did you start hearing MLS would be a thing, and what was your immediate reaction to it as a player?

MEOLA: We knew about Major League Soccer starting before the World Cup started. That was the plan. We would use the '94 World Cup to sort of be the launching pad for Major League Soccer. And of course, it was supposed to start in 1995, but it didn't. It got pushed back a year, which was, in hindsight, the right decision. We knew about it, and we were all excited about it. And there was a rallying cry, or a belief that at least some of us had to stay in the U.S. to try and help promote the game, to try and help move it forward. And there were opportunities for players. We did a really good job of of positioning guys, Alexi Lalas in Boston, and myself and Tab [Ramos] in New York.

Go through the list of guys: Eric [Wynalda] went out West. Jeff Agoos in D.C.. where he had spent so much time at UVA. John Harkes, the same thing, and we were able to position guys in the right places, to spread the word, if you will, about the league. It was a new league. No one knew about it. No one had ever seen it before, and the hope was that we would be in the forefront of having it grow. I had a vision of where I thought it would grow, and I thought it would be great. We had just come off the World Cup. There's so much excitement about the game. If you had told me that it would look like this in 2025, I probably would have told you you were crazy. And it's grown to a place that I don't think any of us could have ever imagined, at least not if you were part of 1996 and that group that came into the league.

Getty Images SportON THE GROWTH OF SOCCER IN THE U.S.

GOAL: You mentioned you felt like you had two jobs, one was to promote soccer here. When did you realize the sport would have staying power here?

MEOLA: I thought that when the league started. And then there was a dark period a couple of years later, right, where we saw a contraction in the league. Looking back on it, it seems logical, right? You start in a bunch of places, and it doesn't necessarily work in some, and you have to add some other places. There were some scary moments… And I was sort of at the beginning of the growth of that. So to look at it, you know, we always knew in New York, in L.A., eventually down in Miami, one day in D.C., It would take a little while, but it would grow. But you know, you're talking about Kansas City and Columbus and Austin, Texas now. And just think of what those places look like on the weekend.

As much as we all dreamed about that stuff. I think we have over 20 new stadiums in the last 25 years. And like, it's incredible what we've done. I get people who look sometimes from the outside, can find fault in things that happen in the game, in our country. But if you do that, that's fine, because that's every business in the world, right? When you really sit back and think about it, there's no sport, there's no league in the world that has grown like this one has. It's incredible to think about it. And luckily, it's here. Like, I'm glad I get to see it, and glad my kids get to see it. And hopefully, we'll take the World Cup and use it again as another springboard to get to the next level.

ImagnON THE IMPACT OF THE '26 WORLD CUP

GOAL: Where do you think the 2026 World Cup can take MLS?

MEOLA: One of the missions is always for Major League Soccer is to convert soccer fans into MLS fans, right? There's those grapple between where players play. Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear that he doesn't care [where guys play]. We're looking at the national team now, and guys in MLS are making a name for themselves, not only in the league on the weekends but also in camps with a national team. Look at a guy like Diego Luna… we're looking at a guy that could potentially be a World Cup player that comes out of the RSL system.

And it's stories like that that I think, really show the quality of the league and show where we're at as a league. You know Diego Luna plays for Real Salt Lake, or Patrick Agyemang plays in Charlotte. You know Brian White plays in Vancouver. And that's what the World Cup will do for those guys. It's life-changing, and it'll be changing for Major League Soccer because we will inherently just have more fans… There'll be enough opportunity to use the World Cup to help the league grow.

"World-class" player hints at leaving Chelsea for European club this summer

A “world-class” player has teased the possibility of leaving Chelsea for a European club this summer, with the ace’s future set to be among many key exit decisions that BlueCo will be forced to make before next season.

Chelsea players likely to leave this summer

It is increasingly difficult to keep up with who is actually on the books at Stamford Bridge, as many players deemed surplus to requirements by Enzo Maresca are on loan spells away from the club right now.

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Alfie Gilchrist, Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja, Raheem Sterling, David Datro Fofana, João Félix, Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Axel Disasi appear destined to leave Stamford Bridge, if BlueCo can find suitable buyers, while Mykhailo Mudryk also faces an uncertain future after failing a drugs test.

Fabrizio Romano has already said that Chelsea are ready to sell Disasi, and potentially for a profit, as Maresca doesn’t want the Frenchman. Sterling is in the same boat, and it is believed by some that the winger is attracting interest from Juventus.

Some of the aforementioned crop, like Gilchrist, are actually putting in some impressive performances out on loan, so it could be much less complicated for BlueCo to acquire bidders for their services.

Another loanee in top form right now is goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, who is dazzling under Liam Rosenior as Strasbourg’s number one shot stopper.

The Serbian has conceded just 27 goals all season, keeping eight clean sheets in the process, but he is still likely to leave west London this summer due to the impending arrival of Mike Penders from KRC Genk, while there is still faith from Chelsea in the likes of Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen (GiveMeSport).

The 25-year-old’s future appears away from Chelsea, despite his excellent form throughout 2024/2025 and impressive past performances while donning the Blues shirt at points last season.

Djordje Petrovic teases Chelsea summer exit to Strasbourg

Opening up on his long-term future, the keeper has had his say, with Petrovic teasing a summer exit from Chelsea to remain at Strasbourg for 2025/2026.

However, this could be dependent on whether they qualify for the Champions League, with the Ligue 1 side currently four points off a top three place.

“I am focused on finishing the season in the best way. We’ll see after what could happen this summer. It could be a very good option to stay here if Strasbourg qualify for the UEFA Champions League,” said Petrovic.

“I always had confidence in my ability to improve. I have progressed more than I thought (at Strasbourg), but I can still improve more between now and the end of the season.”

Given Petrovic’s form, and some criticism aimed towards Chelsea’s current options, there are those who believe Strasbourg’s star loanee could be a solid option between the sticks for Maresca, with Rosenior calling him a “world-class” player already.

“We have seen huge progress from Petro,” said the Strasbourg boss, via X. “He is a world-class goalkeeper. We see it every day, and it is still paying off today.”

“I’ve faced situations where you have your backs up against the wall, and it’s a challenging time for everyone because pressure comes from all angles,” Moody said. “You get external pressure: there’s a lot of noise coming from the media, a lot of noise coming from your fans. And you’ve got your internal pressure, right through from ownership to senior management, baring into that dressing room.”Moody believes that in the five-day gap between games, the franchise would have “gone through every department” of their line-up. “Clearly, the real red flag for Delhi Capitals is their batting and the inconsistency that they’ve shown in that five-game period is quite remarkable: the number of players, and the different positions that players have played in over that period of time,” he said.Capitals have regularly lost early wickets, most recently stumbling to 32 for 4 in the powerplay during their defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday. “Everything is being compounded at the beginning; they’re not crossing the first hurdle,” Moody said.4:27

Moody: ‘It’s got to a point where Shaw’s rope is running out’

Prithvi Shaw out, Mitchell Marsh to openHe believes that, after scoring 34 runs in his five innings of the season, Shaw’s time is up. “Prithvi Shaw is a unique case in that he’s an extraordinary talent and we all know what he’s capable of doing,” Moody said. “He’s done that not only in the IPL but on the international stage as well. With someone like him, you give him a little bit more rope with regards to his opportunity to come good, because you know that when he does, it’s going to be a high impact. But I think it’s got to the point after five games where that rope is running out.”You’ve got to make a tough call on certain players that aren’t showing any light at the end of the tunnel. And on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far with Prithvi Shaw, it may well be that IPL 2023 may not be his year where he has the impact that we all hoped that he was going to have.”It can just be, ‘oh, we’ll give him a couple more games and see what happens’. Those couple of games go, your chances as a franchise have gone. That’s why you’ve got to make that cold, hard decision at that point. This is crunch time.”Moody wants Marsh, who has batted at No. 3 so far this season, to be shifted up to open.”He’s done that before recently and he’s done it successfully. He’s naturally an enforcer so that would complement [David] Warner… it would help him as well,” Moody said. “You’ve got a left-right combination, you’ve got a 6ft4in and a 5ft8in batter, which is difficult to bowl to.”4:30

How should Delhi Capitals structure their top seven after five losses?

Rilee Rossouw in, Axar Patel up at No. 5He would also adjust their overseas combination, playing three overseas batters alongside Anrich Nortje at the expense of Mustafizur Rahman. “I think they’re left with no other choice at the moment,” Moody said. “They’ve been going two and two but I think they have no choice but to go the other way.”At No. 3 and 4, I’d have Rilee Rossouw and Manish Pandey both padded up. I’d always want to keep a left-right combination in the top four: if Marsh gets out, Pandey goes in, and vice versa. That would be my lock for the top four.”As for Axar, Moody would promote him to No. 5.”His batting has really shone over the last 12 months. I’d embrace that and have real clear communication with him that this is his position to nail down… he could have a very good impact there, and it’s always nice to have a left-hander in that middle phase as well, because generally a lot of spin is being bowled.”Capitals have plenty of experience in their management and support staff, with Sourav Ganguly joining as director of cricket this year and working alongside head coach Ricky Ponting, but the franchise face an uphill task to turn things around.”The time we’ve spent dissecting it just shows you how difficult a challenge it is,” Moody said. “What you can be assured of is that Delhi have got an assured leadership group with Ponting and Ganguly, you’ve got experience in [Shane] Watson as a batting coach. They’ve got all the personnel. It’s a case of making sure that they get all those pieces in line to hopefully turning their fortunes around.”
