"Mahmudullah is my T20I captain" – Russell Domingo

He also said that Bangladesh can afford to play with a maximum of 16-17 players for the next couple of series’

Mohammad Isam19-Jan-2020Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo has said that he wants Mahmudullah to lead Bangladesh in T20Is this year. Mahmudullah was handed the captaincy hastily, minutes after Shakib Al Hasan was banned by the ICC last October. Mahmudullah led Bangladesh well in his first assignment, a tightly contested T20I series in India and reprises the role for the three-match T20I series in Pakistan which begins on Friday.Domingo, in a recent interview to ESPNcricinfo, said that he did not want to try too many players ahead of the T20 World Cup in October, and now he has put his weight behind Mahmudullah to be the one to lead Bangladesh in the tournament.”I am hoping he leads us in the World Cup T20,” Domingo said. “He has my full support. I thought he did a great job in India. I have enjoyed working with him. I think he is a good professional. He has respect of the change room. He is a world-class player. He is my captain.”[Continuity with the players] depends on how they do. If a player is out of his depth, we can’t keep going with him. If a player has potential to develop, you have to run with those players. After this series, we have to keep our squad as small as possible. I think we can play with a maximum of 16 or 17 players in the next couple of series.”Domingo said that some batsmen may have to bat out of position as they are trying to figure out the middle-order in Mushfiqur Rahim’s absence. They have picked five openers – Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Mohammad Naim, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Soumya Sarkar – but he has said that the likes of Soumya and Liton may end up batting elsewhere for the sake of the team’s balance.”Guy like Soumya, who batted No 3 in India, may end up batting at No 6 in Pakistan. [Mahmudullah] Riyad may bat at No 5. Afif might come up to No 3 or 4.”The best players can play under any conditions, in any positions. If you bat [Eoin] Morgan at No 3 or 6, he is successful. If you bat KW [Kane Williamson] at No 3 or 5, he will find a way to do that role. It is a great opportunity for the young players to find new strings to their game.”I am excited by it. If a guy like Liton has to bat at No 4 for a game or two, that’s fine. If [Mohammad] Mithun has to bat at No 3, that’s okay. If Afif has to go from No 6 to opening, he has to learn to do those things,” he said.Domingo said they are yet to discuss whether Tamim will play the anchor role, similar to the one he played for Dhaka Platoon in the BPL, or play a more aggressive game. “It is my first tour with Tamim. I have to understand him a bit more. I know he had a role with his BPL team, and it is something that we need to discuss with our team.”At the moment, no decision is made. I will think about it. Depends on who he opens with. If he is playing with a dasher, he can play that role. If he is opening with someone inexperienced, he may have to play positively. The discussions will take place in the next couple of days,” he said.It will also be the first international tour for Hasan Mahmud, the 20-year old pacer who enjoyed some success in this season’s BPL. Domingo said that he has seen a bit of Mahmud, and players like him can stake a claim for a place in the T20 World Cup squad, which is not yet finalised.”It will be the first time I will be working with Hasan Mahmud. I have seen some of his performances in the matches and nets with Emerging Team. It is a young group of players. It shows the depth within our system. Hopefully some of these players can make a big play to get into the World Cup squad. It is not finalised yet,” he said.

Lack of Tests 'main difference' between Bangladesh and India – Mominul Haque

Test captain says promoting Mushfiqur Rahim in the batting order is an option

Mohammad Isam in Indore16-Nov-2019Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque is pleased that his side is getting to play more Test matches courtesy the World Test Championship (WTC).Bangladesh are slated to play Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand next year as part of the 2019-2021 cycle, and a Test each against Zimbabwe and Ireland outside of it.It is a jump from the number of Test matches that they were previously playing, which had prompted many complaints from administrators, players and coaches about the long gaps between fixtures. Mominul, who is treated as a Test specialist and therefore has to deal with long breaks between international games, said that the gulf between Bangladesh and India in the longest format was mainly a result of the difference in the number of matches the two teams play.”We are happy,” Mominul said after Bangladesh’s innings defeat in Indore. “The WTC is a huge opportunity for those who play Tests. It is a huge competition. If the ICC didn’t arrange this competition, we wouldn’t get many Tests. It will be better for everyone.”We have to play a lot of Test matches. If you see in the last seven months, we have played only two Tests. We don’t play Tests like other teams. I think it is the main difference [between the two sides].”Pressed for answers about Bangladesh’s defeat in Indore, where their batsmen wilted under the pressure exerted by the “No. 1 bowling attack in the world”, Mominul said that the opening batsmen could have made life a little easier for the rest of the line-up had they played out the first hour.”The bowling attack was challenging. It would be easier for the rest of the batting line-up if the openers played out the first 15 to 20 overs,” he said. “India have a threatening attack, but we also failed as a batting unit. They are the No. 1 bowling attack in the world. We couldn’t latch on to our chances also.”Mominul also said that they were considering promoting Mushfiqur Rahim in the batting order, after his scores of 43 and 64 in this game. “Promoting Mushfiqur would be a positive sign, if the team management decides to. I think we can have that line of thinking.”

Patriots seal playoffs spot with thrilling last-ball win

Barbados Tridents’ chase of 150 went haywire after Patriots captain Carlos Brathwaite triggered a mid-innings collapse

The Report by Peter Della Penna29-Sep-2019A match that was a slow burn for most of the first 30 overs came alive in the last quarter of play with a series of dramatic twists and turns that ended with St Kitts & Nevis Patriots booking their place in the CPL 2019 playoffs with a one-run last-ball win over Barbados Tridents at Kensington Oval. A first-innings fifty by Shamarh Brooks set up a fighting total of 149 for 7 after Patriots had opted to bat. Tridents’ steady reply then went haywire after Patriots captain Carlos Brathwaite sparked a collapse with the key scalp of Shakib Al Hasan. With 12 to get off the final over and two wickets in hand, Raymon Reifer looked like he would take Tridents across the line after striking an audacious six over extra cover off the first legal ball – the first ball of the over had been a wide – to bring the equation to five off five. But Reifer inexplicably ran himself out coming back for a non-existent two on the next ball. The last-wicket pair of Chemar Holder and Harry Gurney then took it down to two off the final ball to win, or a single to force a Super Over, before Dominic Drakes beat Gurney for pace with a length ball that pegged back off stump.Brooks’ home-ground heroics for Patriots
Two days short of his 31st birthday, Brooks produced a career-best maiden half-century in T20 cricket on his return home to his native island. Brooks came in to bat after Mohammad Hafeez had struggled through four overs to make 6, and fired from early in his knock, with back-to-back fours in the fifth over off Chemar Holder. He survived a massive lbw appeal from Hayden Walsh Jr on 28 after going deep in his crease missing a flick to midwicket. Brooks then rubbed salt into the wound by smashing the legspinner for four and six in the 14th just a few days after Walsh had taken the season’s best figures with 5 for 19 against Trinbago Knight Riders. Walsh eventually got Brooks out bowled slog sweeping off the final ball of his spell in the 16th. Brathwaite then fell at the start of the 17th to an arm ball from Shakib to leave Patriots struggling again at 114 for 6 but a late burst from Fabian Allen and Keron Cottoy gave the visitors life heading into the break.Shakib’s impact with bat and ball
The Bangladesh star had started off the match with a maiden, finished with returns of 1 for 14 in four overs, and was no less a menace with the bat after arriving in the third over of Tridents’ chase. Regularly using his feet to the spinners, Shakib played some gloriously elegant drives through extra cover for four and over long-on for six off Hafeez in the fourth over.He was undeterred when Alex Hales fell to a brilliant catch by Sheldon Cottrell in the eighth over, and continued to steer the innings in tandem with JP Duminy. After 11 overs, Tridents were 83 for 2 and needed just 67 off 54 balls, seemingly well on course for a stress-free conclusion.Brathwaite’s rescue act
The Patriots captain resuscitated his side’s chances with a game-changing 12th over that claimed both Shakib and Jonathan Carter. Shakib found Brooks with a miscued drive to long-on off the third ball for 38. Carter then helped the pendulum swing back closer to the Patriots when his misguided attempt to open the face for a single to third man instead produced an edge dragged on to the stumps.Rayad Emrit, who had taken Hales’ wicket, then induced a slap to mid-on by Jason Holder in the 14th over. Cottrell trapped Ashley Nurse with an inswinger in the next over before another ill-fated steer by Duminy resulted in Brathwaite’s third wicket, edged behind to Devon Thomas, completing a slide of five for 14 to make it 99 for 7 from 85 for 2.With 37 needed off three overs, Reifer battled back fiercely, striking sixes in consecutive overs off Brathwaite and Cottrell to keep Tridents in the hunt. Then came his six off Drakes to start the final over to bring the equation down to a run a ball before madness set in. Tridents must now come back on Sunday for a do-or-die clash against St Lucia Zouks. Only one point separates Tridents and Zouks and the winner will claim the final playoff spot in CPL 2019, regardless of the result of Tridents’ last league stage match at Queen’s Park Oval against Knight Riders.

Federico Chiesa explains why he couldn't listen to Italy boss Luciano Spalletti during Euro 2024 victory over Albania

The Azzurri came from behind to beat Albania 2-1 in their opening game of Euro 2024 on Saturday. Italy were stunned when Nedim Bajrami put Albania ahead in the first minute, scoring the fastest ever goal in European Championship history, but the defending champions hit back with goals from Alesssandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella to secure the win.

The game was played at a very noisy Signal Iduna Park which saw Albania fans outnumber their hosts and provide a vibrant atmosphere. Chiesea admitted that the noise at the stadium made it difficult for Italy fans to hear what their coach was trying to tell them during the match.

WHAT CHIESA SAID

He told reporters: "He wants to see consistency in terms of play and movement. He wants to dominate proceedings and that’s what he’s been telling us ever since he came to Coverciano last September. That’s what we tried to show on the pitch. He gave us this advice, but hearing him on the other side of the pitch was quite hard. There was a wonderful atmosphere, it was fabulous. Even if the Italians were outnumbered it was a magnificent experience."

Italy have made a strong start to the defence of their title but now face crunch games against Spain and Croatia in Group B. La Roja are up next and head into the match after an impressive 3-0 win over Croatia which should make for a fascinating game between the two sides at the Veltins-Arena on Thursday.

Rangers could move for "great" new player to finally solve Clement’s issue

Hoping to turn the tide on Celtic in the race to secure the Scottish Premiership title, Rangers enjoyed a busy January transfer window, welcoming as a number of reinforcements for Philippe Clement's side. Now, even after the deadline, they could add another fresh face.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers left it late, but did eventually add Oscar Cortes to the already-arrived Fabio Silva and Mohamed Diomande. After the winger put pen to paper on a loan deal until the end of the season, Clement expressed his delight over the move, saying via BBC Sport: “I am really delighted to add Oscar to our squad.

“Our discussions have been really positive, and I believe he will be a big asset to the squad as we fight across three fronts for the remainder of this season. Oscar is really enthusiastic about our aims and ambitions as a team, and his skillset will provide welcome competition to our forward line.”

Lens forward Oscar Cortes.

One problem that those at Ibrox did fail to fix in the last month, however, is their striker issue, having watched on as Sam Lammers failed to make an impact since the summer before leaving on loan. They could yet find an unexpected solution, though. According to Ryan Rowe of The Scottish Sun, Rangers could move to sign Dwight Gayle, who has just been released from Stoke City and is, therefore, a free agent.

Those at Ibrox may have to fend off interest from Celtic to secure the former Premier League striker, but it could be a deal that ends up making a surprise difference. With the window now closed, Gayle could be Clement's only hope of finding a solution to his forward woes in the remainder of the Scottish Premiership campaign.

Rangers should take chance on "great" Gayle

Whilst things didn't work out at Stoke, Gayle has shown in the past that he is more than capable of finding the back of the net. At 34 years old, he is now seeking one more chance to prove that, and Rangers, with nothing to lose, should take a chance on the striker, especially given that it would be a free deal. Gayle's Championship record shows how clinical he can be.

Earning plenty of praise during his time at Newcastle United, Rafael Benitez had nothing but good things to say about Gayle. The former manager said via Chronicle Live: "It is not just because he is scoring goals, he is working hard and was also doing a great job today between the lines. And you could see that the wingers and the midfielders are running more along with the defence."

Now, Clement will be hoping to benefit from the forward returning to his best form. As the Scottish Premiership title race comes to a head, a consistent goalscorer leading the line may well prove all the difference in a season-defining move for those at Rangers.

Chahar, spinners maintain CSK's perfect home record

Chennai Super Kings stomped all over Kolkata Knight Riders to register a seven-wicket victory and claim pole position halfway through the IPL season

The Report by Mohammad Isam09-Apr-2019Chennai Super Kings stomped all over Kolkata Knight Riders to register a seven-wicket victory at Chepauk and claim pole position halfway through the IPL season. Deepak Chahar’s early wickets and the spin trio of Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja held back the Knight Riders line-up with accuracy, before the 109-run chase was dealt with quite easily by the hosts.Knight Riders managed to get past the three-figure mark mainly due to another major contribution from Andre Russell, who was unbeaten on 50 off 44 balls. It wasn’t one of his special knocks, though, as the Chepauk pitch unsurprisingly offered more to the spinners.MS Dhoni completes a stumping•BCCI

Faf du Plessis, who was unbeaten on 43 off 45 balls, and Ambati Rayudu handled spin better, as they ensured an easy chase. But it was set up by how Chahar started the game, taking three wickets at the top which took the wind out of the Knight Riders innings.Chahar blows the topChahar’s reputation for being one of the most effective Powerplay bowlers got further enhanced after a three-wicket burst, as Chris Lynn, Nitish Rana and Robin Uthappa were all dismissed in his first three overs, reducing Knight Riders to 24 for 4 by the fifth over. All three fell trying the cross-batted pull-shot, with Lynn being trapped lbw while Rana and Uthappa were caught at short and deep midwicket respectively. Chahar’s initial breakthroughs provided the perfect platform for Super Kings’ spinners who then grabbed control.Knight Riders sink to spinHarbhajan had already got one wicket when Chahar was on fire at the other end during the Powerplay. He had the dangerous Sunil Narine toe-ending a slog which was caught at point. Tahir then removed Knight Riders’ captain Dinesh Karthik and Shubman Gill in consecutive overs. Both batsmen were caught trying to play the flick, Karthik caught at short midwicket while Gill had the googly slip through his bat and pads, to be stumped. Harbhajan added a second in his second spell, having Piyush Chawla stumped in the 16th over.Russell’s lone handDespite walking into the middle with the score at 44 for 5 in the ninth over, Russell rallied the Knight Riders’ floundering innings right till the end. He slammed Harbhajan and Chawla for sixes in between getting dropped by the former at midwicket, when on 8.When Knight Riders slipped to 79 for 9 in the 17th over, Russell farmed the strike with Harry Gurney, ensuring he faced 16 of the 21 remaining deliveries. He managed to hit two more sixes although his arms started to hurt by all the swinging of the bat.Super Kings undeterred by early blowsNarine removed Shane Watson and Suersh Raina in the first five overs but du Plessis and Rayudu eased their concern with a 46-run stand for the third wicket. They hardly pressed the panic button, and were only on the lookout for a boundary when presented with a bad ball or a big gap.Rayudu fell with 28 runs required in the last 5.2 overs, but du Plessis and Kedar Jhadav got them home with 16 balls to spare.

Knight Riders wary of losses piling up as CSK come calling

They’ve lost their last two games and one more could see them slip from second to sixth place by the end of the weekend

Hussey rules Bravo out of KKR clash

Big pictureTheoretically, even one more win could be enough for Chennai Super Kings to make it to the IPL 2019 playoffs. On the road for the second of four straight away games, they come into this contest four points clear of the second-placed team, riding the MS Dhoni wave. The Super Kings captain averages 107 this season, and surprisingly, has the best strike-rate (127.38) among their batsmen who have faced fifty or more balls.Form guide

Knight Riders: lost to Capitals by 7 wickets, lost to Super Kings by 7 wickets, beat Royals by 8 wickets (most recent matches first)

Super Kings: beat Royals by 4 wickets, beat Knight Riders by 7 wickets, beat Kings XI by 28 runs

Apart from him, Ambati Rayudu has found some form, while lower-order batsmen like Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner have begun to establish themselves as big-hitting finishers. They find a way to post a par score on whatever surface they’re playing on nearly every time and take chases down right to the final delivery as often as possible. No opposition can afford to drop their intensity. You do that, and Super Kings will hurt you.Second-placed Kolkata Knight Riders, though, find themselves in a precarious position. They’ve lost their last two games and one more could see them slip from second to sixth place by the end of the weekend. They’ve found success batting second every time this season, but teams are slowly beginning to pick up their weakness: batting first. As Dinesh Karthik said after their loss to Delhi Capitals on Friday, Knight Riders are susceptible to leaving a few runs on the field, and their spin bowlers haven’t found too much help on the Eden Gardens surface. With a few injury concerns for Knight Riders, and five days until their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, defeat ahead of the break could dent their morale. But as long as Andre Russell’s by their side, they’ll know that they have a fighting chance right up to the final delivery. In the news Michael Hussey, the Super Kings batting coach, said Dwayne Bravo is still a few games away from attaining full fitness, and on a pace-friendly pitch, might consider recalibrating their spin-heavy bowling attack. Simon Katich, the Knight Riders batting coach, believes Sunil Narine would be available for the match, while they’ll take a call on Chris Lynn (flu) and Russell (bruised thigh) on Sunday morning.Harbhajan Singh accounted for Sunil Narine in the second over•BCCIPrevious meetingThe two sides met only four days ago, where Deepak Chahar and Harbhajan Singh left Knight Riders 47 for 6 into the 11th over. After that, Russell’s uncharacteristic – but much-needed – 44-ball 50 helped the team reach 108, but Super Kings chased it down with three overs and seven wickets to spare.Likely XIsKnight Riders: 1 Chris Lynn, 2 Sunil Narine, 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Nitish Rana, 5 Dinesh Karthik, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Shubman Gill, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Lockie FergusonSuper Kings: 1 Faf du Plessis, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni, 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Scott Kuggeleijn, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Imran Tahir, 10 Shardul Thakur, 11 Deepak ChaharStrategy punt Make Dhoni face Lockie Ferguson’s express pace. He’s been iffy against fast bowlers – as witnessed against Jofra Archer earlier this week, when he took a blow flush on the helmet off a short-pitched delivery. Using Ferguson with a combination of Kuldeep Yadav or Sunil Narine against the CSK captain seems like the smartest way to keep him quiet. Against spin this season, Dhoni has a strike-rate of only 106, while against pacers who exceed 140+ kph, Dhoni has a strike-rate of less than 90, with a dot-ball percentage of 42.1. Knight Riders could use Shubman Gill high up the order again. In the four IPL innings where he’s batting in the top 4, he averages 67.50 at a strike-rate of 150 in the IPL, including two half-centuries. When he bats below 4 – usually entering towards the back-end of the innings – his average plummets to 24.71 with a high dot-ball percentage of 52%.Stats that matter Super Kings’ run-rate of 6.10 in the Powerplay and 6.60 in between overs 7 to 15 is the lowest among all teams this season. Knight Riders run-rate of 12.80 in the last four overs is the highest in IPL 2019. Knight Riders are chasing their 100th T20 win. Only Mumbai Indians, Super Kings, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire have won more matches. Super Kings have only won here once while batting first, and among all grounds this season, they fare the worst in Kolkata, with a win-percentage of only 40 since the IPL’s inception.
