Middlesex chase down easy target for 10-wicket win over Leicestershire

Ben Mike was left stranded on 99 as his thrilling counter-attacking innings failed to save Leicestershire from defeat in three days at the hands of Middlesex at Lord’s.Nottinghamshire-born Mike followed his 4 for 15 the previous day with a magnificent display of hitting, beating his previous career-best of 74, only to run out of partners one short of a richly deserved century. His efforts took the visitors to 272 second time around and ensured Middlesex, who were a bowler light due to an injury to Tom Helm, had to bat again. However, Toby Roland-Jones’ 3 for 67 meant the hosts needed just 52, a target openers Mark Stoneman and Sam Robson chased down in just over 10 overs to seal a second LV = Insurance County Championship win of the season.Sensing their hosts were understrength, Wiaan Mulder started aggressively, pulling a Roland-Jones loosener for four and driving the next ball to the cover fence. However,Ethan Bamber, so impressive the previous evening, made the early breakthrough at the Nursery End, finding a touch of away movement which caused Sam Evans to edge low to Peter Handscomb at slip. The 23-year-old deserved more from an opening spell where he beat the bat with monotonous regularity, but Mulder and wicketkeeper Harry Swindells survived not only that stint but Shaheen Shah Afridi’s opening salvo too. And when spin took over from one end, Mulder took toll of a rare loose ball from leg-spinner Luke Hollman to raise the 50-partnership.Fate then smiled kindly on Middlesex as Roland-Jones returned to have an lbw shout against Swindells upheld when it seemed the ball was going over the top.Mulder pressed on to reach 50 only to toss his wicket away soon after lunch hooking Afridi straight down the throat of Hollman at deep square. His departure was the cue for Mike’s thrilling counter-offensive. Afridi bowled him some short stuff in retaliation for being on the receiving end of the same the night before, but the all-rounder promptly hooked him over the ropes at long leg. What started as by-play became an ongoing contest with only one winner, Mike flailing the Pakistan international over cover for six as the 50-stand with Ed Barnes came up in 39 balls, forcing Afridi out of the attack.A punch through mid-on took him to 50 from 57 balls before a scare on 62 when Bamber got one between bat and pad which somehow missed the stumps.Barnes proved a great foil in a stand which reached 98, ensuring Middlesex would have to bat again, before he played too soon at one from Hollman and lobbed a catch to short mid-wicket.Mike though plundered on, passing his previous best of 74 and pulling a short one from Roland-Jones for six as the visitors inched ahead. At the other end Callum Parkinson, survived being struck by a return from the outfield, but perished, caught at slip off Roland-Jones, and Chris Wright clubbed Hollman straight into the hands of midwicket with Mike two short of his century. His mistake was to take a single, a decision he was to regret when last man Beuran Hendricks shouldered arms to Roland-Jones who sent his off-stump cartwheeling out the ground, cruel luck on Mike after a magnificent innings.

O principal deles o do rebaixamento.

Ed Barnard, Ben Cox defy scene-stealing Stuart Broad

Worcestershire duo dig in after Notts looked poised for quick victory as Broad chimes in with bat and ball

David Hopps29-Apr-2022It says a lot for the calibre of Ed Barnard’s third Worcestershire hundred that for the first time this season Stuart Broad decided he must try to curb a growing rebellion and really slipped himself. He was no longer feeling his way into the season, drawing on years of experience in his meticulous preparation for a potential England recall, he was pumping in with the old ball, a respected adversary in his sights, seeking to fashion a Nottinghamshire victory with as much energy as he could muster. Barnard made him forget the future and brought him into the present.Broad in his veteran phase is not as quick as he was. Allegedly. His speeds varied between 76 and 81mph all day, according to the ECB speed guns that are the latest impressive enhancement to the excellent live county feeds. A suggestion is taking hold, however, that the speeds are a little on the slow side, a view perhaps approved by ageing fast bowlers. Intriguingly, this is the opposite to the traditional whispers about international cricket where a bit of ramping up has occasionally been suspected. Perish the thought that according to official ECB figures England could go into the New Zealand Test series with the most celebrated but also the slowest new-ball attack in Test cricket. But he was at the top of the range (whatever that range was), with some nasty bounce to boot, as Barnard, for so long regarded as a bowling allrounder, battled through his final assault with a century beckoning and earned the right to be regarded as equally proficient with bat and ball.He was 98 when Nottinghamshire took the second new ball with four overs remaining – it can be safely assumed that bit had not quite gone according to plan. But he worked Luke Fletcher’s first delivery to third man, comfortably took on Haseeb Hameed’s throw, and secured a just reward. It fell to Broad to bowl the final over of the day as Trent Bridge was bathed in evening sunshine. But Barnard and Ben Cox, whose first half-century of the season had contributed to an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 125 in 47 overs, stood firm. They took a few blows and batted with considerable discipline. There are football fans around, apparently, who hope to see Notts wrap up victory before Nottingham Forest continue their promotion push against Swansea just across the road at three o’clock but it feels a little optimistic.Related

“Ed Barnard, just had nerves of steel, really,” said Cox, whose career suggests he knows a bit about such things. “He was so calm at the crease. Today was tough against a high-class attack on what certainly had been a favourable wicket on the first day – albeit one that had changed a bit.”A match that looked likely at one stage to be claimed by Nottinghamshire within two days remains alive with Worcestershire holding a 118-run lead with five wickets remaining. The Lincoln Green stripes of the first day have long gone and an easing surface still makes Nottinghamshire strong favourites, but balls have occasionally gone through the top and Barnard’s application has given his side hope.Barnard’s career progress is a two-finger salute to those who advocate the cutting of 18 professional counties for a supposed future of The Best v The Best, primarily based upon areas of high population. His background – Shrewsbury School and England U19s – suggests that he would have made the grade in a slimmed-down system, but it is unlikely that he would have been the same rounded cricketer he now is. His batting talents have progressed more slowly than his bowling – he was not particularly prolific with the bat at junior level – but Worcestershire have nurtured those talents over many seasons and now, at 26, have given him the chance to make the grade at No. 6.His maiden hundred only came last season, in a bore draw against Essex at Chelmsford, although he was less boring than some. A second century followed against Warwickshire at New Road in another run-fest. This time the demands were more onerous. When he came to the crease, Worcestershire were still 75 in arrears, having lost four for 32 in 12 overs.Fletcher had uprooted Ed Pollock’s middle stump second ball with a wonderful delivery that left the left-hander from around the wicket before Jake Libby drove with uncharacteristic looseness to be caught at backward point driving loosely. Broad produced bounce and movement to remove Azhar Ali in the same region. Dane Paterson added Brett D’Oliveira, who lobbed into the leg-side.The batter who really catches the eye in this Worcestershire side is Jack Haynes, son of the former Worcestershire allrounder, Gavin. With respect, he looks as if he has the potential to outdo his father by a considerable margin, but looks can deceive and he is still awaiting his first half-century of the season. Broad, back for a third spell in mid-afternoon, old-manned him by setting him up for a hook, on 49, which he obligingly yanked straight to Ben Duckett at deep square. There were runs, too, for Broad, at the start of the day, a hit-about-him innings that included two sixes against Charlie Morris as Worcestershire, who must have been watching too many Test match highlights, overdid the short stuff on a pitch still offering bowlers assistance by traditional means. Broad’s unbeaten 45 from 27 deliveries represented his best score in county cricket for five years, but the only stats that England will be studying will be 18-3-49-2… with the chance of a five-for in the morning.

Unleash Chido Obi: Teenage goal machine can inject life into injury-ravaged Man Utd's hopeless season and give Rasmus Hojlund the reality check he needs

The 17-year-old got just four minutes off the bench against Tottenham, but he deserves more opportunities to shake up the flat Red Devils

Ruben Amorim is not usually shy about making substitutions during a game, be it hauling off Joshua Zirkzee after 33 minutes against Newcastle or the nine changes he has made at half-time in his 21 games in charge of Manchester United. And yet as he watched his side toil to the eighth defeat of his tenure at Tottenham on Sunday, the coach did not look to his bench until the 89th minute, when he decided to hand 17-year-old Chido Obi his debut.

There was a good reason for the Portuguese's inaction: United's sudden injury crisis mean that eight of his nine substitutes had no senior experience with the club. The only player who did was Victor Lindelof, who was returning from a long lay-off from injury and was not exactly the player United needed as they searched for an equaliser.

Obi had less than four minutes to make an impact against Spurs and, perhaps unsurprisingly, he did not touch the ball. His debut merely served as an opportunity to get him in the record books as United's third-youngest debutant in the Premier League and to get a taste, however brief, of playing in front of 60,000 people and millions more on television.

But the fact that Amorim turned to Obi shows just how much potential the teenager has and how much faith the club has in him. So with United so shorn of hope in any form, the time has come for Amorim to unleash the prolific teenager to give the team the shake-up it needs…

Getty/GOALFerocious scoring record

There has been a huge online clamour to see more of Obi in the first team from United supporters due to his incredible feats at youth level. Those began when he was still at Arsenal, when he scored seven goals in a single game last season against Norwich City Under-18s. It was not the highest amount of goals he had scored in one game, however; that was his logic-defying 10-goal haul in an U16s game against Liverpool.

The Danish striker, who moved to England when he was 13, has continued to set pulses racing since leaving Arsenal – where he scored 32 goals in 18 U18s appearances last season – for United in the summer of 2024. He scored a hat-trick in the space of 15 minutes on his full debut for United's U18s against Nottingham Forest and soon became the all-time top scorer in the U18 Premier League.

He has also set United's FA Youth Cup campaign alight, bagging doubles against Coventry and Preston before banging in a treble in the 5-1 routing of Chelsea last week.

Obi had begun training with the first team the same week as his hat-trick against Chelsea, although Amorim was keen to emphasise that it was due to the squad's injury problems. There was little indication that the youngster would be making his debut against Tottenham when the coach said: "I don’t want to say names, we have to be careful on that. We have problems this week, we called some young players to be in our training. He is one of them."

Amorim had also been cautious when asked about the teenager before the recent FA Cup tie with Leicester City, simply responding: "He's doing his job. He's improving and playing in the youth teams. We will see at the end of the season."

The Portuguese evidently changed his mind when he turned to the towering striker against Tottenham, hoping that his quick reactions in the box would help United grab an equaliser. "If you see Chido playing, he is clever with every ball lost in the box, so I wanted one more player," Amorim explained. "But I felt the team was good during the game and I didn't need to change. Chido was that one player who could, with one long ball, make the difference."

GettyNothing to lose

Coming off the bench for less than four minutes away from home for a desperate team bereft of confidence was certainly a big ask for Obi, but there are plenty more opportunities for him to showcase his ability, especially given that United's league season is only going to peter out into insignificance.

The Red Devils have 13 Premier League games remaining and the only thing they realistically have to fight for is avoiding their lowest finish since they came 13th in the 1989-90 season. The defeat at Tottenham saw Amorim's side drop to 15th in the table, and although jokes still abound about relegation, they are surely safe from that unthinkable fate, sitting 12 points above 18th-placed Ipswich Town. The lowest they could feasibly finish is 16th, while getting into the top half seems a tall orde as they are eight points behind 10th-placed Brighton.

Essentially, United have nothing to lose from giving Obi more opportunities up front from now until the end of the season. But they have plenty to gain.

Getty The Rashford precedent

The opportunity that has opened up for Obi in the team feels reminiscent of the circumstances that led to Marcus Rashford's incredible breakthrough into the first team in 2016. Rashford had nothing like the hype surrounding Obi when he was included in the starting line-up for a Europa League last-32 second leg at home to Midtjylland in February 2016 after Wayne Rooney was injured and Anthony Martial hurt himself in the warm-up.

But with his two goals against the Danish side and a brace three days later against Arsenal in the Premier League, Rashford shot to fame and breathed new life into a flagging season, leading to United eventually winning the FA Cup. The team could really do with a fresh injection of optimism and youthful energy right now, and so could the fans, who love nothing more than seeing young academy players promoted into the first team.

There are also a few United players who could be helped by Obi playing more regularly, though none more so than Rasmus Hojlund. The Dane has had a terrible campaign, scoring just twice in the league despite being the team's only natural No.9, with Joshua Zirkzee being much better suited to helping with the build-up play than scoring goals. Hojlund has started eight of Amorim's 13 Premier League games, but his meagre contribution was summed up by the fact that Manchester City's new signing Omar Marmoush managed to score more times in the opening 33 minutes against Newcastle on Saturday than the Dane has all season.

Exit talks held as in-demand £200k-per-week Chelsea ace now wants to quit

Chelsea have held exit talks with interested clubs over one player ahead of January, as it is believed he has his sights set on a Stamford Bridge exit.

Players who could leave Chelsea in January or next summer

Enzo Maresca’s side take on Liverpool this Sunday, in what is set to be a mouth-watering contest, as the Blues look to upset Arne Slot’s Premier League title challenge and potentially mount an assault of their own.

Key figures inside Man Utd really want to sign "underrated" Chelsea player

They believe he’d be a great addition.

It has been an impressive start to the season for Chelsea’s new manager, who has guided the west Londoners to four wins, two draws and just one defeat in the league – which came at the hands of English champions Man City – but now one of their toughest tests of the campaign awaits this weekend.

The likes of Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo – Chelsea’s top performers of the campaign so far according to WhoScored – will play a key role in attempting to thwart the Merseysiders at Anfield.

However, there are also those squad members who appear destined to play a bit-part role. Maresca has already shown that he’s unafraid to axe swathes of players and let them go, with Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Omari Hutchinson, Angelo Gabriel, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Tino Anjorin, Thiago Silva, Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Djordje Petrovic, Trevoh Chalobah, Kepa Arrizabalaga, David Datro Fofana, Aflie Gilchrist and Bashir Humphreys all departing on recent loan, permanent or Bosman deals.

Chelsea are prepared to loan out Mykhailo Mudryk in January, so the Ukranian can get some much-needed game time away, while it is believed both Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile could be sold by BlueCo.

AC Milan have also made contact with Carney Chukwuemeka, via his representatives, with the Rossoneri attempting to convince Chelsea’s £100,000-per-week gem to make a move to the San Siro in January.

Chukwuemeka now wants to leave Chelsea, so he can get first-team opportunities elsewhere, and the situation is very much the same with left-back Ben Chilwell.

The Englishman, who missed a large portion of last season through injury, isn’t enjoying a better time of it under Maresca. Spain international Marc Cucurella is the tactician’s preferred option, and Chilwell has been reduced to very limited cup cameos so far as a result.

Ben Chilwell "now wants out" of Chelsea with talks held

Journalist Simon Phillips, via his Substack, has shared an update on the 27-year-old’s future this week. He writes that Chilwell “now wants out” of Chelsea, and the feeling is mutual among those within Cobham.

It is believed numerous clubs have already been spoken to about Chilwell ahead of the January window, with the in-demand ex-Leicester City star attracting interest from Fulham, Crystal Palace, Ipswich, and Manchester United – as well as from clubs in La Liga and Serie A – who have approached Chilwell’s agents.

Chelsea are actively encouraging clubs to come forward, but as things stand, only loan with obligation-to-buy deals have been offered by interested sides. Todd Boehly and co want a permanent deal, though, and won’t entertain any loan offers – so there is still work to do.

“He’s Premier League ready, we know that having played in this league as well as he has for Leicester and he looked like he’d played for us for a long time,” said former boss Frank Lampard on Chilwell back in 2020.

“I admired him before because of his ability to be so high up the pitch when you want him, not that he’s being reckless by being there. He just arrives, he’s got the capacity to get up and back, great quality on the ball, and he’s a great lad.”

Jayden Goodwin could make Western Australia first-class debut

The son of former Zimbabwe batter Murray had planned to take two years out of the game for his Mormon mission

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2021Jayden Goodwin, the son of former Zimbabwe batter Murray Goodwin, could make his Western Australia first-class debut this week after being named in the Sheffield Shield squad to take on Queensland.Goodwin, a 19-year-old left hander, comes into the squad in place of Sam Whiteman who has been ruled out with delayed symptoms of concussion after weekend grade cricket.Goodwin has been considered a huge talent for some time but was set to take two years out of the game to undertake a Mormon mission in Zimbabwe – leaving in 2020 midway through a rookie contract with WA which was left open for him – before the pandemic prevented international travel.”I had uncles that did [the mission]; they go away and serve God and help others, and just give to the community,” he told earlier this year. I just really wanted to do that. I saw it as a great blessing.”But when I got the contract [with WA], because it was my dream job, it was the hardest decision I ever had to make. It’s a weird thing to think about, to give up everything – and having a contract was everything to me – to go and do something to show your love for God and teach others about Christ.”The impact of Covid-19 meant the mission was relocated to Bunbury near Perth but he has since opted to cut it short and return to cricket. His father, Murray, played 19 Tests and 71 ODIs for Zimbabwe. He had emigrated to Western Australia as a 13-year-old and scored 4078 Sheffield Shield runs.

Pieter Malan hundred repays Warwickshire investment to strengthen Division One hopes

South Africa opener puts troubled stay behind him to lay platform for visitors

George Dobell11-Jul-2021Warwickshire 245 for 4 (Malan 141, Sibley 80) vs WorcestershireWarwickshire haven’t had much luck with overseas players this season. With Pieter Malan, the South Africa batter, missing the first three rounds of LV= Insurance County Championship action due to Covid-related travel complications, they signed Hanuma Vihari, instead. And while he produced one important innings of 52 against Essex, he struggled to adapt to the seaming conditions prevalent in early season England and averaged just 16.66 in his three matches.Carlos Brathwaite, meanwhile, signed for the T20 Blast, contracted Covid-19 and was ruled out of key matches. That led to the club signing Kyle Mayers for the final three games of the T20 group stages, but he missed his first game – a pivotal encounter against Worcestershire a couple of days ago – after a test for the virus proved inconclusive. It left Warwickshire (or Birmingham as they are known in T20 cricket) struggling to qualify for the knockout stages.Related

Malan had endured a tough time since his arrival, too. Going into this match, his sixth Championship game, he averaged just 15.12 with a highest score of 32. It has been, as he put it, “a learning experience”, But it really wasn’t what Warwickshire had hoped for.But here, at last, Malan proved his worth. Feasting upon a true surface and an under-strength attack, he made a high-class century to give Warwickshire a strong platform in the game. Having survived an edge to slip on 5 – replays were not conclusive, but it looked as if the ball had not quite carried to Tom Fell – he scarcely played another false stroke. It was a timely contribution from Malan in several ways. Not only were Warwickshire in need of a strong performance with the bat to ensure their place in Division One – a high-scoring draw would probably suffice – but Malan is out of contract at the end of the week. He is not, at present, guaranteed to be invited back when the Championship resumes in a couple of months. He flies back to South Africa in a week.It was hard to imagine his earlier struggles as he dominated here. But on a dry, largely grassless pitch, there was little lateral movement to bother him and, initially at least, the new ball skipped on to the bat in the manner to which he is accustomed in South Africa. Anything short – and lots was short – was pulverised, while he also drove sweetly when the ball was overpitched.”It’s been a learning experience,” Malan said. “You sort of need a different technique to do well here and I’ve built my technique playing on South African wickets. This pitch was a bit drier and the ball came on quite nicely.”Worcestershire, it does have to be said, were oddly accommodating. Not only did they prepare a pitch where barely a ball moved laterally, but they fed his ability on the back-foot with a surfeit of short balls. Really, as he cut and pulled their bowling apart, you wondered if they were planning on laying on a braai after play to ensure he felt completely at home. There was good news for England, too. Dom Sibley has endured a frustrating season to date, with a finger injury limiting his ability to gain time at the crease. But here he looked increasingly fluent as he helped Malan add 220 for Warwickshire’s second wicket and recorded his highest score since February. He gave one chance, when Daryl Mitchell at slip put him down when he had 24, but otherwise looked in good touch in producing a couple of surprisingly pleasing shots – a back-foot force through the covers being one of the strokes of the day.Perhaps Worcestershire were a bit unfortunate. The pitch for this match is used – albeit only in the T20 between these sides a few days ago – and they felt it would offer assistance to their spinners. So they rested Charlie Morris and Dillon Pennington (Josh Tongue is injured and may be a doubt for the rest of the season) and handed debuts to Ish Sodhi, the New Zealand legspinner, and Josh Baker, an 18-year-old left-arm spinner who left school (Malvern College) a couple of weeks ago. Losing what may prove an important toss was not ideal. Warwickshire have also given a first-class debut to the left-arm wristspinner, Jake Lintott.Baker was, by some distance, the pick of Worcestershire’s spinners. Introduced into the attack for the 11th over – a nice piece of captaincy from Joe Leach – he didn’t gain much turn, but demonstrated impressive control and bowled with the sharpish pace which is pretty much essential for a modern finger-spinner. Late in the day, he also picked up the wicket of Sam Hain with the final delivery before rain brought an early close; a quicker one that slid on with the arm and trapped Hain on the back foot. It was a nice piece of bowling from a young man who looks worthy of further investment.By then, Warwickshire had also lost Sibley, caught down the leg side, and Malan, caught at slip after an edged pull shot ballooned off his thigh pad. It took a little of the gloss off the day but, with another bonus point around the corner and a fair bit of batting to come, they will hope they are well on the way to the haul they need. If they get there, they will be grateful for Malan’s contribution.
