Weather the big worry as Sri Lanka and Afghanistan scrap for crucial points

Big picture

If their Asia Cup tilts are anything to go by, these are evenly matched teams. A quick recap of what happened roughly two months ago: Afghanistan thumped Sri Lanka in the group stage, their quicks ripping through the Sri Lanka batting order to have them 105 all out, before Afghanistan’s top four ran down the target in 67 deliveries; next match, in the Super 4s, Sri Lanka comfortably chased 176 in Sharjah – a ground record. Both arrive at this match with their campaigns in critical condition. Sri Lanka have just been crushed back-to-back, by Australia, then New Zealand. Afghanistan have had successive matches abandoned because of rain, having earlier been swatted aside by England. The losers here will be knocked out of semi-final contention, though there also seems to be a chance that this match will be another washout, which doesn’t quite end both teams’ semi-final hopes, but might, depending on other results (an especially cruel fate for Afghanistan, who have only lost one match so far).If play gets under way, Afghanistan will target what has been a brittle Sri Lanka batting order. Opener Kusal Mendis is the key batter in the top order, with a tournament-high 180 runs from six innings at a strike rate of 157. The others have been underwhelming, even Pathum Nissanka, who has made 137 runs, but at a strike rate of only 97.Afghanistan’s own batting did not quite kick into gear against England, who dismissed them for 112. But as Sri Lanka’s pace attack is depleted, and Wanindu Hasaranga not quite at his lethal best over the past couple of games, Afghanistan will hope for a better outing in Brisbane.1:27

In the spotlight

In the two matches against Sri Lanka at the Asia Cup, opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was in blistering touch, crashing 40 off 18 in the first match, before plundering 84 off 45 in the next. He has played in the Lanka Premier League, so knows the bowlers a little more than most. He hasn’t quite lit up the World Cup yet, making just 10 off 9 against England, after not a lot of impact in the warm-ups. The challenge for him is to be able to adjust to the extra bounce often seen at the Gabba. If there’s an opponent he feels confident against right now, though, it’s probably Sri Lanka. Not to be too blunt, but Sri Lanka’s fielding has been awful this tournament. Which is something of a turnaround from the outstanding performances that helped win them an Asia Cup in September. They didn’t love the cold in Geelong and Hobart (Sri Lanka bowlers going back generations know they must take 14 or 15 wickets in an innings, because their chilly team-mates insist on dropping several in cold weather). But they had no such excuse on a sunny day in Sydney, where Nissanka’s drop of Glenn Phillips may have cost them the match. All up, they have dropped eight catches, and have shown sloppy ground-fielding technique to boot, right through the tournament. They can’t afford any mistakes with the path to a semi-final already treacherous for them.

Pitch and conditions

The Gabba’s customary bounce and swing will likely be on show in the afternoon, but that’s if the rain stops for long enough to allow a game. There’s a 90% chance of rain according to some forecasts.Rain has followed Afghanistan around at the T20 World Cup•ICC via Getty

Team news

Sri Lanka might be tempted to bring back Danushka Gunathilaka to the top order in place of Nissanka, which may also help strengthen the fielding. Otherwise, likely the same XI.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kusal Mendis (wk), 2 Pathum Nissanka/Danushka Gunathilaka, 3 Dhananjaya de Silva, 4 Charith Asalanka, 5 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Chamika Karunaratne, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Lahiru KumaraHazratullah Zazai has been ruled out with an abdominal injury, ending his tournament. Darwish Rasooli might slot into the middle order, with perhaps Najibullah Zadran going up to open.Afghanistan (possible): 1 Najibullah Zadran, 2 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 3 Ibrahim Zadran, 4 Usman Ghani, 5 Darwish Rasooli, 6 Mohammad Nabi (capt), 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Azmatullah Omarzai, 9 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10 Fareed Ahmad, 11 Fazalhaq Farooqi

Stats and trivia

  • Out of the three teams he’s scored more than 100 T20I runs against, Gurbaz has the highest strike rate against Sri Lanka – 197. In fact, it’s his highest against any team.
  • Sri Lanka have played three T20Is against Afghanistan, losing only the opener of the recent Asia Cup.
  • Despite having taken only one wicket in the last two games, Hasaranga remains the highest wicket-taker of the tournament, with ten dismissals from six matches. He has an economy rate of 7.08.

    Quotes

“We know we’re the Asian champions. We are using that for confidence. Our mentality is very good. We are trying to bounce back from the match against New Zealand.”
.”I think we’ll be fresh. We will have a lot of energy going into the game, so it’s exciting times. We’ve played here in a pre-tournament game, and had that experience. And we had over two weeks preparing here in Brisbane. It’s a little bit warmer now than it was when we were here preparing for the tournament.”

Wolves make deadline day bid to sign new international player for Pereira

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a ‘crazy’ deadline day offer to sign a new international player, according to a report.

Wolves transfer news

Vitor Pereira’s side ended their five-game winless run in the Premier League on Saturday, as they claimed a 2-0 win over Midlands rivals Aston Villa. The victory has lifted Wolves out of the relegation zone, but with still plenty of work to do to make sure they stay in the Premier League, Pereira and Wolves have their eye on one or two new arrivals before the transfer window closes.

Wolverhampton Wanderers could leave it late to snap up this gem.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Midlands side are chasing a deal for Dynamo Kyiv ace Volodymyr Brazkho. In fact, Wolves have made an offer for the player worth £16.7 million, and Brazkho is keen on moving to England and the Premier League.

Jordan Henderson for Ajax.

Brazkho is not the only midfielder on Wolves’ radar, as it’s been claimed that they could make a move for Jordan Henderson in the final hours of this transfer window. The former Liverpool midfielder looked set to join AS Monaco last week, but the deal fell through after Henderson threatened never to play for Ajax again if they didn’t allow him to leave. However, he has since apologised, but Wolves could look to test the waters with a bid.

Wolves make deadline day bid to sign new international player

The Premier League side’s search for a new midfielder doesn’t stop with Brazkho and Henderson, as according to Foot Mercato relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves have made a “crazy offer” to sign Marshall Munetsi from Stade de Reims.

The Midlands side have already done business with the French club this month, as they signed Emmanuel Agbadou from Stade de Reims. Their search for a new midfielder has taken them back to the Ligue 1 club, with Wolves making an unknown offer to sign Munetsi, but it is claimed to be near the €20 million (£16 million) they paid for Agbadou. The Premier League side are hoping the big offer will help convince Stade de Reims to sell Munetsi this close to the deadline, and discussions between the two clubs are ongoing.

The 28-year-old is comfortable playing in multiple roles in the midfield, as he can play as a holding player, central, as well as a more advanced midfielder. Ideal for Pereira, who is looking to improve and add to his options in the middle of the park.

Munetsi has 23 caps for Zimbabwe to his name and has played over 100 games in Ligue 1, meaning if he were to arrive at Molineux, he would bring experience to a Wolves midfield that is full of youth and experience. Munetsi’s arrival at Wolves could see him replace Mario Lemina, who is currently suspended and has been linked with an exit from the Premier League side in recent days, as well as Boubacar Traore, who is out injured, and it is unknown when he will return.

Move over Moore: Spurs chasing £29m ace who will be one of the world’s best

It would be fair to say that, so far anyway, this season has not been a great one for Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners find themselves down in 11th place in the Premier League, and while they have a League Cup semi-final to look forward to, it’s against the seemingly unstoppable Liverpool.

However, while the mood around the club is far from ideal at present, there have been a couple of positives to come from the campaign, notably the emergence of the sensationally gifted Mikey Moore.

So, recent reports linking the club to another young talent who could be even better than the Englishman should seriously excite the fans.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Tottenham are one of several clubs interested in Barcelona’s tremendously exciting young striker, Vitor Roque.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that fellow Premier League sides Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Brentford are also considering the promising centre-forward as a potential target for the summer transfer window once his loan to Real Betis has been completed.

This competition and the fact that Betis have an option for another year-long loan and an option to buy into their deal could complicate matters.

However, Spurs could still get ahead of the competition by flexing their financial muscle, and, according to reports from earlier this year, an offer in the region of £29m could be enough to secure the youngster’s services, although that was before his recent uptick in form, so the fee could be higher today.

It could be a costly transfer to get over the line, particularly for someone his age, but given Roque’s form this season and the potential so many believe him to possess, it’s one well worth pursuing, especially if he ends up being better than the incredible Moore.

Why Roque could be even better than Moore

Okay, so the very first thing we should say is that, as things stand, from his performances in the youth sides to how he has been spoken about by those in the know and his short cameos this season, Moore looks like he could develop into a truly exceptional star.

Predicting a player’s future can be a tricky business indeed, but the young Englishman looks like he has everything he needs to become a true world-beater over the next five or six years, and so does Roque.

In fact, while the Spurs gem has made eight, mostly substitute, appearances for the first team this year, he still has yet to score or assist a goal, which cannot be said about the 19-year-old Brazilian.

For example, in 23 appearances for Betis this season, 14 of which have been starts, the “truly magnificent” prospect, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored six goals and provided two assists.

Moreover, for someone his age, he has some seriously impressive offensive underlying numbers.

According to FBref, the Barça gem sits in the top 12% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, for non-penalty expected goals, the top 14% for total shots and the top 16% for progressive carries, all per 90.

If that still isn’t enough to convince you that the “special” talent, as dubbed by former Atlético Madrid star Diego, could become one of the world’s best strikers, then perhaps his statistics from his final season in Brazil will.

For example, in just 45 senior games across the 2023 season, the incredible phenom scored 21 goals and provided eight assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.55 games, which is a ridiculous rate of return for anyone, let alone a teenager.

Ultimately, Spurs already have several exciting prospects at the club, but Roque looks like he could turn into a genuine world-class talent, and a frontline with him and Moore could be truly special a few years from now.

Middlesex chase down easy target for 10-wicket win over Leicestershire

Ben Mike was left stranded on 99 as his thrilling counter-attacking innings failed to save Leicestershire from defeat in three days at the hands of Middlesex at Lord’s.Nottinghamshire-born Mike followed his 4 for 15 the previous day with a magnificent display of hitting, beating his previous career-best of 74, only to run out of partners one short of a richly deserved century. His efforts took the visitors to 272 second time around and ensured Middlesex, who were a bowler light due to an injury to Tom Helm, had to bat again. However, Toby Roland-Jones’ 3 for 67 meant the hosts needed just 52, a target openers Mark Stoneman and Sam Robson chased down in just over 10 overs to seal a second LV = Insurance County Championship win of the season.Sensing their hosts were understrength, Wiaan Mulder started aggressively, pulling a Roland-Jones loosener for four and driving the next ball to the cover fence. However,Ethan Bamber, so impressive the previous evening, made the early breakthrough at the Nursery End, finding a touch of away movement which caused Sam Evans to edge low to Peter Handscomb at slip. The 23-year-old deserved more from an opening spell where he beat the bat with monotonous regularity, but Mulder and wicketkeeper Harry Swindells survived not only that stint but Shaheen Shah Afridi’s opening salvo too. And when spin took over from one end, Mulder took toll of a rare loose ball from leg-spinner Luke Hollman to raise the 50-partnership.Fate then smiled kindly on Middlesex as Roland-Jones returned to have an lbw shout against Swindells upheld when it seemed the ball was going over the top.Mulder pressed on to reach 50 only to toss his wicket away soon after lunch hooking Afridi straight down the throat of Hollman at deep square. His departure was the cue for Mike’s thrilling counter-offensive. Afridi bowled him some short stuff in retaliation for being on the receiving end of the same the night before, but the all-rounder promptly hooked him over the ropes at long leg. What started as by-play became an ongoing contest with only one winner, Mike flailing the Pakistan international over cover for six as the 50-stand with Ed Barnes came up in 39 balls, forcing Afridi out of the attack.A punch through mid-on took him to 50 from 57 balls before a scare on 62 when Bamber got one between bat and pad which somehow missed the stumps.Barnes proved a great foil in a stand which reached 98, ensuring Middlesex would have to bat again, before he played too soon at one from Hollman and lobbed a catch to short mid-wicket.Mike though plundered on, passing his previous best of 74 and pulling a short one from Roland-Jones for six as the visitors inched ahead. At the other end Callum Parkinson, survived being struck by a return from the outfield, but perished, caught at slip off Roland-Jones, and Chris Wright clubbed Hollman straight into the hands of midwicket with Mike two short of his century. His mistake was to take a single, a decision he was to regret when last man Beuran Hendricks shouldered arms to Roland-Jones who sent his off-stump cartwheeling out the ground, cruel luck on Mike after a magnificent innings.

O principal deles o do rebaixamento.

Ed Barnard, Ben Cox defy scene-stealing Stuart Broad

Worcestershire duo dig in after Notts looked poised for quick victory as Broad chimes in with bat and ball

David Hopps29-Apr-2022It says a lot for the calibre of Ed Barnard’s third Worcestershire hundred that for the first time this season Stuart Broad decided he must try to curb a growing rebellion and really slipped himself. He was no longer feeling his way into the season, drawing on years of experience in his meticulous preparation for a potential England recall, he was pumping in with the old ball, a respected adversary in his sights, seeking to fashion a Nottinghamshire victory with as much energy as he could muster. Barnard made him forget the future and brought him into the present.Broad in his veteran phase is not as quick as he was. Allegedly. His speeds varied between 76 and 81mph all day, according to the ECB speed guns that are the latest impressive enhancement to the excellent live county feeds. A suggestion is taking hold, however, that the speeds are a little on the slow side, a view perhaps approved by ageing fast bowlers. Intriguingly, this is the opposite to the traditional whispers about international cricket where a bit of ramping up has occasionally been suspected. Perish the thought that according to official ECB figures England could go into the New Zealand Test series with the most celebrated but also the slowest new-ball attack in Test cricket. But he was at the top of the range (whatever that range was), with some nasty bounce to boot, as Barnard, for so long regarded as a bowling allrounder, battled through his final assault with a century beckoning and earned the right to be regarded as equally proficient with bat and ball.He was 98 when Nottinghamshire took the second new ball with four overs remaining – it can be safely assumed that bit had not quite gone according to plan. But he worked Luke Fletcher’s first delivery to third man, comfortably took on Haseeb Hameed’s throw, and secured a just reward. It fell to Broad to bowl the final over of the day as Trent Bridge was bathed in evening sunshine. But Barnard and Ben Cox, whose first half-century of the season had contributed to an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 125 in 47 overs, stood firm. They took a few blows and batted with considerable discipline. There are football fans around, apparently, who hope to see Notts wrap up victory before Nottingham Forest continue their promotion push against Swansea just across the road at three o’clock but it feels a little optimistic.Related

“Ed Barnard, just had nerves of steel, really,” said Cox, whose career suggests he knows a bit about such things. “He was so calm at the crease. Today was tough against a high-class attack on what certainly had been a favourable wicket on the first day – albeit one that had changed a bit.”A match that looked likely at one stage to be claimed by Nottinghamshire within two days remains alive with Worcestershire holding a 118-run lead with five wickets remaining. The Lincoln Green stripes of the first day have long gone and an easing surface still makes Nottinghamshire strong favourites, but balls have occasionally gone through the top and Barnard’s application has given his side hope.Barnard’s career progress is a two-finger salute to those who advocate the cutting of 18 professional counties for a supposed future of The Best v The Best, primarily based upon areas of high population. His background – Shrewsbury School and England U19s – suggests that he would have made the grade in a slimmed-down system, but it is unlikely that he would have been the same rounded cricketer he now is. His batting talents have progressed more slowly than his bowling – he was not particularly prolific with the bat at junior level – but Worcestershire have nurtured those talents over many seasons and now, at 26, have given him the chance to make the grade at No. 6.His maiden hundred only came last season, in a bore draw against Essex at Chelmsford, although he was less boring than some. A second century followed against Warwickshire at New Road in another run-fest. This time the demands were more onerous. When he came to the crease, Worcestershire were still 75 in arrears, having lost four for 32 in 12 overs.Fletcher had uprooted Ed Pollock’s middle stump second ball with a wonderful delivery that left the left-hander from around the wicket before Jake Libby drove with uncharacteristic looseness to be caught at backward point driving loosely. Broad produced bounce and movement to remove Azhar Ali in the same region. Dane Paterson added Brett D’Oliveira, who lobbed into the leg-side.The batter who really catches the eye in this Worcestershire side is Jack Haynes, son of the former Worcestershire allrounder, Gavin. With respect, he looks as if he has the potential to outdo his father by a considerable margin, but looks can deceive and he is still awaiting his first half-century of the season. Broad, back for a third spell in mid-afternoon, old-manned him by setting him up for a hook, on 49, which he obligingly yanked straight to Ben Duckett at deep square. There were runs, too, for Broad, at the start of the day, a hit-about-him innings that included two sixes against Charlie Morris as Worcestershire, who must have been watching too many Test match highlights, overdid the short stuff on a pitch still offering bowlers assistance by traditional means. Broad’s unbeaten 45 from 27 deliveries represented his best score in county cricket for five years, but the only stats that England will be studying will be 18-3-49-2… with the chance of a five-for in the morning.
