'F*ck VAR!' – Man Utd fans fume & even claim a conspiracy as Jonny Evans goal is cruelly ruled out against Burnley just weeks after Nathan Ake effort is allowed

Jonny Evans thought he had scored his first Manchester United goal in over nine years on Saturday, only for it to be ruled out after a VAR review.

  • Man Utd fans raged at VAR
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Evans got on the end of a corner and headed it beyond Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford to break the deadlock. The defender's celebrations were cut short though, as VAR intervened.

The goal was not allowed to stand because a VAR review revealed that striker Rasmus Hojlund was in an offside position and interfering with play. The Denmark international was in Trafford's way and prevented him from getting to the ball.

The officials' decision will also come as a big blow to Evans, who last scored for United in January 2014 in an EFL Cup clash against Sunderland. The game against Burnley is the first that Evans has started for United since 2015.

Evans did go on to provide an assist for Bruno Fernandes just before half-time, however.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The goal being chalked off infuriated Red Devils fans, who pointed out that Manchester City scored a similar goal against Fulham earlier in September that was allowed to stand.

Howard Webb, chief refereeing officer at Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, later admitted that Nathan Ake's goal should not have been allowed to stand because Manuel Akanji was blocking the Fulham goalkeeper.

He said on : “From the outset, I want to say this should have been disallowed. These are not always easy to call because you are trying to get two pieces of information together. Is the player in an offside position, which official is in a good position to see, and what consequence was there of the player being in that position and how it impacts the opponents?

“It certainly appears that Akanji has an impact on Bernd Leno, the goalkeeper seems to hesitate. The officials on the field gave the goal, they did not see the obvious action that impacted Leno’s ability to play the ball. They did not feel it was clearly impactful on Leno’s ability to play the ball but when you see it, you can see that hesitation by the goalkeeper who was waiting to see whether the ball made contact with Akanji, which would have deflected the ball."

  • WHAT THEY SAID

United fans expressed their anger on social media, with some going as far as to hint at a conspiracy against their team.

So used to having it all their own way in Switzerland, this season has been a rude awakening. They will relinquish their Super League crown to Young Boys and are about to tumble out of Europe with a heavy defeat.

However, they should take encouragement from their qualification to the knockout phase given their original goal of the season was any sort of continental football after the winter break. And they will have learned plenty from playing against Guardiola.

Stumbling sides seek revival

Rising Pune Supergiants have lost two games since their win in the tournament opener, and require a victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore to get their campaign back on track

The Preview by Nikhil Kalro21-Apr-2016Match factsFriday, April 22, 2016
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)Big pictureRising Pune Supergiants’ inaugural IPL season got off to the perfect start with a thumping win over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener. Supergiants have lost two games since, and require a victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore to revive their campaign.Royal Challengers, who also won their first game before losing two consecutively, have depended on a strong top order to mask their bowling fragility. Chris Gayle, who did not feature against Mumbai Indians, having flown to Jamaica to be with his partner for the birth of their first child, will miss this game too. Till Gayle returns, Royal Challengers could persist with KL Rahul opening and Travis Head at No. 5.Royal Challengers have failed to find a settled bowling combination. Barring Harshal Patel, no other specialist bowler has played all three games. West Indies legspinner Samuel Badree has been ruled out of the tournament after failing to recover from an injured shoulder, and has been replaced by the South African chinaman bowler Tabraiz Shamsi.Supergiants haven’t found their best combination either. It isn’t often that MS Dhoni makes wholesale changes after two matches – Supergiants made three against Kings XI Punjab, including drafting in Thisara Perera and Irfan Pathan for Mitchell Marsh and Rajat Bhatia as like-for-like replacements. The batting has been held together by Faf du Plessis’ consistency (170 runs in three matches), but a misfiring middle order has been shown up. Supergiants have the personnel, but need to perform consistently to bid for a playoffs spot.Form guideRising Pune Supergiants: LLW (most recent matches first)
Royal Challengers Bangalore: LLWIn the spotlightAjinkya Rahane is a vital cog in Supergiants’ batting order. He started the season with an unbeaten 66 against Mumbai, but has scored only 30 runs over his next two games. A solid start could help an unsettled middle order come into its own.Shane Watson was the most expensive purchase at the IPL auction (INR 9.5 crores), and his all-round abilities have made a telling difference to the Royal Challengers line-up. He has bowled four overs in all games, taken four wickets, and scored 57 runs at a strike rate of 154.05. With his experience, he will be asked to bowl at crunch times and provide Royal Challengers with impetus towards the end with the bat.Team newsSupergiants brought in Perera and Pathan against Kings XI, but neither enjoyed a productive game. Mitchell backs up Leach five-for to put Worcestershire on top

ScorecardDaryll Mtichell led a strong reply•Getty Images

Daryl Mitchell hit an unbeaten 80 as Worcestershire consolidated an increasingly powerful position at the end of the second day at the Ageas Bowl. At the premature close caused by bad light, Worcestershire were a healthy 221 for 3, just one run behind Hampshire’s first innings total of 222.Hampshire began the day 119 for 4 but lost their remaining six wickets in the morning session for the addition of 103 runs, pace bowler Joe Leach doing a substantial portion of the damage with 5 for 63. This took Leach’s tally for the season to 23 and Worcestershire soon capitalised on his good work on a wicket that offered plenty of assistance to the pace bowlers throughout.Mitchell and Richard Oliver put on 62 for the first Worcestershire wicket, Mitchell and Ton Fell added a further 94 for the second and as Hampshire ran out of ideas, Alex Gidman helped add another 58 for the third.Hampshire struggled in the first session from the moment they lost James Vince to another disappointingly low score in what has so far been a poor season for the 24 year old about whom so much is expected. Vince had made 8 when he mistimed a pull against Leach and played on and apart from the obdurate Will Smith, newly capped by Hampshire, resistance was only spasmodic.Adam Wheater was sixth out at 170 to a catch at the wicket by Ben Cox – his second of four in total – before Smith edged into his own stumps after making 40 to provide New Zealander Colin Munro with a wicket in his first over in first-class cricket in England. Ed Barnard removed Sean Ervine to another Cox catch at 205 and Leach returned to dismiss Danny Briggs and last man Brad Wheal in five balls to wrap up a good morning for Worcestershire. In contrast Worcestershire found batting altogether easier when it was their turn, Hampshire having to wait until the 18th over before Gareth Berg induced an edge from Oliver that Smith pouched at slip.Fell hit six fours in his 48 before Berg found another edge which Liam Dawson snared in the slips and then Gidman fell at 214 to a tumbling catch by Vince as stand-in wicketkeeper following a knee injury sustained by Wheater.Mitchell’s innings has so far occupied 202 balls and included eight fours and it was he who earned the highest praise from bowling hero Leach. “We have got a very high regard for him,” Leach said. “He is the lynchpin of our batting and has not got as many runs this season as he would have liked. You could see by the reception he got when he came off the field how delighted we were for him.”At this level if you bowl out a side for 222 you have to be happy. It vindicated our decision to bowl first. It was a very disciplined performance by our bowling unit. We aimed to keep the run rate down and while the first wicket was a long time coming on the first day, four fell quickly and we were able to maintain the momentum.”Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein said: “Over the past year we have not played as poorly as this all round. Credit to Worcestershire they have stuck to their game plan, particularly in the field.”We have been really poor and I am not used to that. They did not give us any runs, which was completely the opposite to us.”

Sunil Narine is likely to travel to Chennai for his re-test with former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram•PTI

Kolkata Knight Riders have decided to send Sunil Narine for another test of his bowling action after match officials expressed “concerns” over “fair amount” of deliveries the offspinner bowled in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday in Visakhapatnam. If Narine is called a second time, he will be out of the IPL and hence the franchise wants to play it safe and not risk playing him in the upcoming matches without the test.It is understood that the franchise is trying hard to get an appointment at the Sri Ramachandra Arthroscopy and Sports Science Centre in Chennai, an ICC accredited testing centre. Narine will travel with former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram, who is Knight Riders’ bowling consultant, and team analyst AR Srikkanth. This will be the second time Narine will be travelling to Chennai this month having already received a clearance from the BCCI’s sub-committee on suspect action days before the IPL started. The panel, comprising former India captain S Venkataraghavan, former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath and former international umpire AV Jayaprakash, had no issues with Narine’s remodelled action and gave him a clean chit. That was a re-test for Narine considering he got the clearance in two months having obtained the earlier one from the testing centre at the University of Loughborough on March 10.According to an official privy to the matter, the on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Vineet Kulkarni reported to the match referee having doubts about a few deliveries Narine bowled against Sunrisers, who won the rain-affected match by 16 runs. Incidentally, Narine had gone wicketless, giving away 38 runs in his four overs. The official said “a fair number of deliveries, about four to five” were spotted by the umpires. He did not describe the type of deliveries but did confirm the faster one was one of them. It is understood that the BCCI told the franchise that the match officials were “concerned” about some deliveries. The news would have definitely come as a surprise for Narine and the franchise considering the BCCI panel had given him a positive report card earlier this month. As intriguing as the matter could be, the official pointed out that sometimes a bowler, if he is pushed into a corner, can fall back on old habits. Indirectly he said that Narine might have repeated some of the mistakes he made during the Champions League Twenty20 last year, when he was reported twice by the umpires and was consequently out of the tournament.According to the official he did not want to cast aspersions on Narine’s future in the tournament and only said the decision was his and Knight Riders’ to make. Although no Knight Riders official was available for comment, as a first step the defending champions have decided to not risk playing Narine without sending him for fresh testing. Knight Riders play Rajasthan Royals at home on Sunday and there is a strong possibility Narine will miss that match.

Rutherford takes NZ A to tri-series success

ScorecardMatt Henry made early breakthroughs for New Zealand A•Getty Images

Abundant batting line-up or not, England Lions have not advanced their individual World Cup claims by the manner in which they have twice been dismantled by an experienced New Zealand A in the Royal London tri-series. In Bristol last Friday and Worcester today, four wickets have been lost without 50 on the board, inroads which brought New Zealand wins on both occasions and ensured a satisfying victory in the tournament. If the Lions batsmen remain worthy of debate, this particular bowling attack is unlikely to detain the selectors when World Cup squads are finalised. Hamish Rutherford found them much to his taste, the only surprise being that he did not complete an untroubled century, falling five runs short when he was bowled on the charge, off-side drive in mind, by the left-arm spinner Stephen Parry, the best England bowler on show.England Lions did well to escape to 255 for 8, but after a heavy shower, which trimmed the chase to 220 in 36 overs, New Zealand achieved their target with alacrity. Tom Latham, who struck a run-a-ball 48, finished matters by striking Tom Smith over the square leg rope with 21 balls to spare. With a home World Cup to inspire them, New Zealand can expect to field a competitive squad.New Zealand victories are rarely marked by extravagant praise, but a downbeat presentation ceremony was low-key even for them. The Lions’ defeat was suitably marked by the downcast tones of Ernie on the New Road public address. Ernie brings his own style to the most exciting of days, permanently sounding as if he is reading out details of his own funeral, an era which demands extravagant excitement having somehow passed him by.New Zealand fielded a side boasting nine players with international experience – only Scott Kuggeleijn and Daryl Mitchell remain uncapped – and once again they played with efficiency worthy of their status, taking clinical advantage of a good toss as they made maximum use of helpful bowling conditions in the first hour.

Makes sense for me to coach – Flower

Andy Flower, back in the old routine as coach of the England Lions, expressed surprise that anybody should wonder that he is fulfilling such a hands-on role six months after resigning as England’s director of cricket after a demoralizing Ashes whitewash.

“I’m a cricket coach so coaching a cricket team makes sense,” he said. “It’s not my decision when I will do it again, but my role is to work with the younger set of players. They were really energetic, even though they were coming off the back of a busy county season, and they were an exciting bunch of cricketers to work with so I really did enjoy it.”

Flower, who was retained in a senior developmental role by the ECB after it was mutually agreed he should stand down, conceded that New Zealand were the stand-out team of the tournament, succeeding on the back of a strong pace attack, twice cutting through the top order of an England side that struck four hundreds in the tournament.

“The Kiwis really outplayed us today. They played some excellent cricket and exploited the conditions well. I thought it was a good toss to win. Always at Worcester there is movement in the first hour especially when you have a 10.30 start and two new white balls and their three quicks were excellent.

“But there is real talent in English cricket and this sort of learning experience is excellent for them. There are a few spots open for debate I guess and it’s the selectors’ job to make that decision.”

This New Road pitch has been used three times in a week and produced more than 1,500 runs in the process. It impressed the Lions so much during their victory against Sri Lanka A that they encouraged the groundstaff to use it again. There was no reason to change that assessment as wickets fell. James Vince’s unproductive series ended when he mistimed a pull to midwicket and then Matt Henry intervened in a manner that suggested it will not be long before he adds to his solitary ODI cap, won against India in Wellington earlier this year and where he bowled with eye-catching pace.Henry trimmed Ravi Bopara’s stumps, had James Taylor lbw and caused Jason Roy to edge to slip as he advanced down the pitch; Roy’s England debut, if and when it comes, will surely be in T20. An impressive new-ball spell would have brought a fourth wicket, too, if Alex Hales, on 8, had been held at second slip by Dean Brownlie.Just as he did in Bristol, it was Jonny Bairstow who reassembled England’s fractured innings. Poor Ashes tour or not, he was unfairly rubbished in some quarters, and when he completed a third successive half-century by assertively sweeping Ish Sodhi’s quicker ball, he had again played in a measured fashion that for a time seemed to have deserted him. His departure on 71 was unfortunate, a bottom-edged pull at a ball from Doug Bracwell that kept a little low and a catch down the leg side.Smith must have thought his Lions days were behind him when he was dispensed with after a 2006-07 tour of Bangladesh, but nearly eight years later he has proved himself a mature cricketer. He provided restrained support for Bairstow before indulging in some late hitting with Toby Roland-Jones to give England’s total a veneer of respectability. Henry’s last over went for 18, the final boundary jumping up as it struck the rope and jolting awake a dozing spectator by striking him meaningfully on his sun hat.

'Insular' England must reconnect with fans

Alastair Cook, England’s Test and ODI captain, has conceded that the team became “insular” and failed to build up a reserve of public goodwill despite a lengthy period of success

Alastair Cook, England’s Test and ODI captain, has conceded that the team became “insular” and failed to build up a reserve of public goodwill despite a lengthy period of success. After a 5-0 Ashes whitewashing brought an end to Andy Flower’s time in charge amid criticism of the team’s attitude and style of play, Cook and the new head coach, Peter Moores, are set to embark on a period of rebuilding England’s reputation on and off the field.England went to Australia in search of a fourth consecutive Ashes victory but ended up losing almost every game on tour, as well as several key players. The home side were backed up by feverish support, as Australia united behind Michael Clarke and Darren Lehmann in their attempts to regain the urn, and Cook picked up on that strength, echoing comments made by Moores in suggesting that England’s new regime would be a more open and accessible one.”Australia connected with their public very well,” he said. “Maybe we became very insular as a side – it worked very well at some points for us but when it wasn’t going well we didn’t have anything to fall back on. The guys in the dressing room are good people, they are nice guys. The public don’t see that enough. Hopefully we can copy Australia a little bit in the way they did it.”We are very lucky – they [England fans] do support us through thick and thin. Just judging on since I have been back they have been very supportive, disappointed about Australia like we all were but hopefully we can reward them for that support now.”Cook’s captaincy, which began with an historic victory in India and included leading England to a 3-0 win over Australia last summer, has also been subject to much scrutiny. Having sat out England’s limited-overs trip to the West Indies and not been involved in a disappointing World T20 campaign, he will resume control in an ODI against Scotland on Friday, before the visits of Sri Lanka and India. He has previously described the changes in the England set-up as providing a “clean break”, intimating that now is the time to build a team in his own image rather than continuing to work along the lines established by Flower and his predecessor, Andrew Strauss, but Cook rejected theories that Flower was too controlling.”I do disagree. What is written and what actually happened is not always accurate,” he said. “Anyone who knows me knows I have an opinion and can be quite stubborn. Flower can also be quite stubborn. You are out there in the middle and you have to make decisions as a captain. Just because you consult other people doesn’t mean you can’t make your own decisions. You still have to make that final decision and are responsible for it.”Although Flower remains with the ECB in a development role, England’s power axis now centres on Cook and Moores. Cook played under Moores during his first spell as England coach and the two have been getting reacquainted in between the early rounds of the Championship.Moores was sacked in 2009 after falling out with Kevin Pietersen, England’s captain at the time, and his style was felt to be overly prescriptive by senior players who had experienced success under Duncan Fletcher. Cook said he felt Moores was “harshly treated” at the end of his reign and was confident that the 51-year-old would not make the same mistakes again.”The meetings with Peter have gone well,” Cook said. “It was about getting to know Peter again and hammering out what he thought my values were and me asking him what his were and getting some middle ground, which wasn’t too hard.”He learned from last time and he will do things slightly differently. Five years extra coaching gives you extra experience. We all do things slightly differently but he’s an energetic and enthusiastic guy who loves cricket and England. We’ve got to use that enthusiasm and drive.”It was going well until the fall out – he’d only been in the job 18 months before the fall out and things changed. When you have grown up in one regime as a senior player and then a new guy comes in, it is difficult – Moores and Duncan Fletcher are obviously completely different guys and have different ideas.”England have cast admiring glances at the work of Stuart Lancaster with the rugby union side and Cook reiterated that they would be looked to as a source of inspiration. “Lessons should be learned from England rugby – huge credit to Stuart Lancaster and the guys for the way they have managed to change things,” he said. “I imagine it’s taken a hell of a lot of effort and work. But I think just the way they have gone about their business shows how they’ve improved. Everyone can see the development in their side.”Following the embarrassing defeat to Netherlands at the World T20, England cannot afford to look beyond next week’s ODI in Aberdeen. However, the news that Matt Prior will miss Sussex’s match against Lancashire beginning on Sunday due to his ongoing Achilles problem is unlikely to have aided planning for next month’s first Sri Lanka Test. Jonny Bairstow, who replaced Prior as wicketkeeper in Melbourne and Sydney, is fit after breaking a finger and was named in Yorkshire’s squad to face Durham.
