West Ham supporters express pride, concern at Declan Rice video

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans have expressed both pride and concern after the England Twitter account shared a video of Declan Rice joining up with the squad.

Manager Gareth Southgate called up the defensive midfielder last week after he announced his intention to represent the Three Lions instead of the Republic of Ireland.

Rice could subsequently make his international debut in the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

A number of Irons fans have urged Rice to do them proud and to enjoy the experience, as he becomes the first player to be called up while playing for the club since Joe Hart in 2017.

However, a selection of supporters, while wishing Rice well, has expressed their concern that he may well pick up an injury.

The 20-year-old has been a key member of Manuel Pellegrini’s squad this season, playing 28 times in the Premier League as the club attempts to earn qualification to the Europa League.

Leeds tracking Motherwell starlet Jake Hastie

[ad_pod ]

According to a report in The Daily Record, Leeds United are one of five English clubs who have been scouting Motherwell winger Jake Hastie following some impressive displays, and suggests that the Yorkshire outfit are already on the lookout for their next Jack Clarke.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Daily Record report that scouts from the Yorkshire outfit, Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City and Sunderland all watched the 19-year-old in action in his side’s 2-1 win against St Mirren on Wednesday, and witnessed him score a brilliant goal.

The Daily Record says Motherwell are facing a big battle to keep hold of the exciting attacker this summer with the raft of interest in the player, whom they say could be available for a cut-price development fee at the end of the season.

The report adds that the teenager and the club are some distance apart in terms of agreeing a new contract, and his future at Fir Park Stadium hangs in the balance even though he has only made five first-team appearances for them this term, scoring an eye-catching four goals.

Leeds looking for their next Jack Clarke?

Quite possibly.

It was no secret that the Whites youngster was attracting interest from a number of top flight clubs including Tottenham Hotpsur during the January transfer window, as per The Mirror, and while they will be confident of keeping them if they win promotion, it could be more of a battle if they fail to.

Even if the Yorkshire outfit do keep Clarke at Elland Road they will still want to look for another young player that can make a similar impact to the one that the 18-year-old has already made for them in the future, and Hastie would certainly be that.

The two youngsters have the quality and potential to be on either wing for years to come if Leeds decide to make their move this summer.

West Brom fans slam Oliver Burke for his poor form at Alaves

West Brom supporters have been discussing winger Oliver Burke this week after a fan account posted the latest on his form so far.

The Scotsman is currently out on loan at La Liga outfit Alaves, who sit 15th, six points from the bottom three.

He has racked up 17 appearances for Basque-based side, although just five have been starts, per Transfermarkt. In that run, the 22-year-old has only managed one assist and is yet to contribute on the scoresheet.

This has unsurprisingly led to several members of the Hawthorns faithful slamming him ahead of a potential reunion this summer as his contract doesn’t expire until 2022.

Here’s what has been said:

Some supporters couldn’t contain their laughter at his measly returns in Spain while one brandished him the “biggest waste of money” the club have ever paid and are likely to pay.

Another hoped that they would buy him this summer, so the club-record flop doesn’t have to return to the west Midlands.

Burke cost the club £15m back in 2017 from RB Leipzig, becoming the most expensive Scottish player ever.

One member of the Baggies faithful blasted him for being a “waster” while a further fan said it was a sad turn of events given the potential he arrived with over two years ago.

Others then made comparisons about his current ability…

A tongue in cheek comment from one fan suggested that they wouldn’t even want Burke back as a ball boy whilst another pondered whether he would be good enough for a League One outfit, rather than a promotion-chasing Championship side like West Brom.

Where is he from?! Can you name which obscure countries these famous players have represented?

There was even some optimism that they could get some sort of fee for him with £3-4m a figure they could expect.

Emery keeping Monreal in his Arsenal squad could prove to be a masterstroke

With the transfer window now open, Arsenal supporters will be hoping to see the arrival of some fresh faces as their club battles it out for a Champions League spot.

And while there may not be that much noise right now in regards to incomings, the Emirates faithful could still be about to get some good news elsewhere.

The Breakdown

ESPN reports the Gunners have activated the one-year contract extension option in Nacho Monreal’s contract, which should come as a huge boost to Unai Emery.

The Spaniard’s deal was initially set to expire in the summer, which would have left his manager in quite the dilemma.

Given Arsenal’s struggles at the back this season, Emery will likely have to dip into the summer market to bring in a central defender or two heading into the 2019/20 Premier League season.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”367061″ player=”13308″ title=”Arsenal”]

Under the budget he is currently working with, doing that, in addition to trying to add a new left-back to the squad, would not be easy.

But with Monreal, who is probably the team’s best defender, now set to stay at the Emirates for another year, Emery should be able to strengthen Arsenal where they are at their weakest — central defence — without having to worry about putting money aside when doing so in order to buy a new left-back.

Rangers keen on bringing former defender Halkett back from Livingston

[ad_pod ]

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen on a move to sign Craig Halkett from Livingston, according to Football Insider.

What’s the word?

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have caught the eye this season with their fine performances but there is still work to be done at Ibrox, where the club are eyeing further defensive additions to aid their planned rise to the top.

FootballInsider names Rangers amongst the clubs vying for the services of Livingston defender Craig Halkett, who has been watched by Championship sides and could be available in January as his contract comes to a close at the end of the season.

An academy graduate of Rangers’, Halkett was allowed to leave in 2016 to join Livingston but Gerrard is considering a move to bring the 23-year-old former Scotland U19 international back to the club.

A wise move?

Gerrard’s hunt for defensive reinforcements comes with Rangers’ having conceded eight goals in as many games, the worst defensive record in the top-eight, while they have kept just two clean sheets from those fixtures.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”301458″ player=”12034″ title=”The Problem With Paul Pogba”]

Livingston captain Halkett was a standout performer in his side’s 1-0 victory over Rangers last week, where Gerrard will have been keeping a close eye on the defender’s performance, and the fact he has previous links to the club makes him an ideal recruit.

With his contract also due to come to a close at the end of the season, Halkett is also an affordable target for Rangers and one that will improve the competitiveness amongst the club’s back-line.

Tottenham fans urge club to sign Christian Pulisic after brace against Liverpool

Highly-rated Borussia Dortmund attacker Christian Pulisic impressed and scored twice for his side as they beat Liverpool 3-1 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, and Tottenham Hotspur fans have urged their club to sign the brilliant 19-year-old, rated at £40.5m by Transfermarkt.

The teenager has made a big impression for the Bundesliga club with 12 goals and 20 assists in 97 competitive appearances for them despite his tender years, and he showcased his talent again in America with a goal from the penalty spot, before he added a second in North Carolina.

Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for Wilfried Zaha this summer to suggest that Mauricio Pochettino wants to add another forward to his ranks, and Pulisic would be competing with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela in the starting XI if he did sign.

Lots of Tottenham supporters, some of whom have named four attackers they would prefer to sign over Zaha, were quick to have their say on Pulisic’s performance via social media, and while one said he “would work so well with Kane”, another said he “would be perfect for Spurs on and off the pitch”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

In Focus: Chelsea up bid for Oxlade-Chamberlain, but would Liverpool be better for him?

Chelsea have increased their offer for Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to £35m, according to the Daily Star.

What’s the word?

The England international has been linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer as he has just one year left on his current contract and is yet to sign a new deal.

Chelsea reportedly tabled an initial £25m bid for the 23-year-old, but they were knocked back.

Now, the Daily Star claims that the Premier League champions have added £10m onto their offer in the hope of persuading Arsenal to sell.

The publication states that Oxlade-Chamberlain is ‘attracted’ by the idea of joining the London rival as he would have an opportunity to play Champions League football.

In addition to that, he is likely to receive wages close to his reported £120,000-a-week demands.

What about Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp is also rumoured to be an admirer of Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the Daily Star reporting that Liverpool were willing to match Chelsea’s opening £25m offer.

If the England star decides to leave Arsenal, which club would be the best option; Chelsea or Liverpool?

At Stamford Bridge, Oxlade-Chamberlain would likely be used in a wing-back position, similar to the role that he possessed at times for the Gunners last season.

He could play on either side, but would be fighting Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso for a first-team spot, which would make him more of a squad player than a starter – much like his current predicament at Arsenal.

At Liverpool, he would have more opportunities to be in the first XI, and a chance to play in his favoured midfield role, particularly now that Adam Lallana will miss the first few months of the season.

In terms of success, though, Chelsea is the place to be as the club are more likely to win silverware than Liverpool judging on recent years.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain does decide to move on, then he needs to list his priorities, as he would fit into both clubs.

Rooney will leave Man United, Scholes believes

Manchester United will have to prepare for life without Wayne Rooney as club legend Paul Scholes believes the veteran striker will leave, in quotes made to The Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

Having surpassed Bobby Charlton to become Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer, Wayne Rooney has certainly ensured legendary status at Old Trafford but limited opportunities since Jose Mourinho took charge mean the club may have to wave goodbye.

That’s the view of another United legend, Paul Scholes, who told The Daily Mail he believes Rooney will leave the club if he continues to find himself on the bench regularly- which will hand a boost to MLS and Chinese clubs eyeing his services.

With United boasting the attacking talents of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, there is little room left for Rooney to fill and that could mean the end for the player who joined the Red Devils in 2004.

What was said?

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Scholes admitted he can no longer see Rooney staying at Manchester United for the long-term:

“It’s a strange one. No one will be more frustrated than Wayne at not playing. Being a sub will be driving him up the wall. When he gets his chance he has to take it because he has real competition.”

“If it carries on going the way it is, I can’t (see Rooney staying for another two years). Maybe it will be re-assessed at the end of the season if he’s in and out of the team. I don’t see him as a player who will accept that. He will want to be at a team where he’s playing every week.”

Should Rooney leave?

It’s clear Manchester United don’t need Wayne Rooney anymore but the player himself may need the Red Devils, as an exit from Old Trafford would likely see him move to America or China- which would severely affect his opportunities with the international team.

Rooney has previously stated he will retire from England duty after the 2018 World Cup and a transfer this summer could see him miss out on the tournament all together, which would be a big blow for the skipper who’s eyeing one last charge for international glory.

Having struggled at international tournaments since his breakthrough at Euro 2004, Rooney will want to redeem himself in Russia next summer and may only get that chance if he’s still on United’s books.
