Rangers manager news van Bronckhorst

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing as some manager news emerged involving Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

As per Sky Sports, the Dutchman is now ‘close’ to agreeing a deal in principle to become the next manager at Ibrox, following the departure of Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa.

The Light Blues are understood to be ‘very pleased’ with the latest developments after a thorough process led by Ross Wilson, with a number of ‘strong candidates’ on their list.

However, it looks as if they have finally secured their man in GvB, ahead of a vital Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hibernian on Sunday.

Van Bronckhorst would certainly be a popular appointment among the Gers faithful, given that he is a two-time Scottish Premiership winner as a player with the Teddy Bears, and also did very well as a coach at Feyenoord, who he guided to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years back in the 2016/17 campaign (BBC).

He also won four other major trophies with the Rotterdam club.

Hoggard hat-trick inspires Yorkshire

Division One

Matthew Hoggard took a hat-trick to inspire Yorkshire to an extraordinary 156-run victory against Sussex at Hove as the home side folded for 83 in under 26 overs on the final afternoon. It leaves Sussex on the verge of relegation heading into their final match against Nottinghamshire next week. Yorkshire are within touching distance of safety and need five points to ensure it, while they have also pulled Lancashire a little closer to the drop zone. Sussex were already struggling when Hoggard returned for his second spell having earlier removed Joe Gatting and run-out Rory Hamilton-Brown from third man. He dismissed Andrew Hodd, Dwayne Smith and Piyush Chawla caught at second slip in three balls in Yorkshire’s first hat-trick since 1998 and Hoggard’s second after his effort against West Indies, in Barbados, in 2004. David Wainwright, the left-arm spinner, then took the final two scalps to finish with 4 for 12 as Michael Yardy was left forlornly on 13 not out. It was a dramatic turnaround after Sussex appeared to have given themselves an outside chance of victory as they chipped away at Yorkshire’s batting. Jacques Rudolph fell to the first ball of the day from Chawla, who claimed three further wickets during a lengthy spell. When Azeem Rafiq was bowled by Smith the lead was 201, but Hoggard hit 26 off 24 in a final-wicket stand of 38 with Wainwright. A couple of hours later the same pair were match-winners.Worcestershire couldn’t claim their first win of the season as Somerset fought back to secure a draw at Taunton. John Ward watched the action.

An absorbing final day in Cardiff ended with Glamorgan one wicket short of victory for the second week running and Gloucestershire 13 runs shy of their target. In a bold move, Jamie Dalrymple declared on the overnight lead which left all day for the visitors to chase 294. Both teams needed victory to close the gap on second-placed Essex and will need a host of results to go their way next week to earn promotion. Dalrymple and Robert Croft shared six wickets, but couldn’t quite wrap up the match in time as Steve Kirby blocked out a maiden. Glamorgan struck early when James Harris removed Stephen Adshead for a duck, but Hamish Marshall sped to 35 from 29 balls before Harris struck again. At 126 for 2, Gloucestershire were well placed until Croft removed Alex Gidman for 52. Dalrymple struck twice in the middle and Croft then claimed William Porterfield for 81 from 248 balls. Despite wickets falling, Gloucestershire managed to chip away at the target as Jon Lewis made 28. Lewis fell in the penultimate over but the final pair managed to hold out.

Klich faces Leeds axe ahead of Brighton

Leeds United return to Premier League action later this evening and Marcelo Bielsa will be hoping for a change in fortunes on the pitch, having picked up just two wins from their opening 12 matches.

The Yorkshiremen head to the south coast for the late kick-off against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium off the back of a 2-1 defeat in north London last time out.

Bielsa’s men dominated spells of the first half against Tottenham Hotspur, even going into the break with a one-goal lead, but were undone in the second half.

The Argentine was clearly unimpressed by the performance from Mateusz Klich, who earned a recall to the engine room, as he was the first player hooked and that was just 14 minutes after half-time, right after Spurs’ equaliser.

‘Another difficult afternoon for Klich to shine. Looked despondent as he came off, but his pressing was non-existent in the second half. Summed up why he had not been in the team in recent weeks,’ wrote LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross in his post-match ratings column.

Indeed, the Poland international has been way off his usual standard for the bulk of the 2021/22 campaign.

His last three starts in the Premier League have drawn shocking WhoScored ratings of 6.34 against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and his second-lowest of the season, a 6.17 against Spurs.

As per SofaScore, Klich lost every single one of his duels last Sunday, failed to record a successful dribble and was dribbled past twice by the opposition’s midfield. Passenger-like.

Only four players to have started eight or more games have managed a worse average rating for the entire season, and unsurprisingly they are mainly attack-minded players.

Valued at £8.5m and earning around £34k-per-week at Elland Road, Klich has surely lost his place in the starting XI heading into this weekend’s encounter. At the time of writing, Brighton are sat inside the top ten, so they will be a tough test and the struggling Whites can no longer afford to carry underperforming players like the Polish midfielder.

Bielsa must be ruthless and axe his long-serving favourite from his starting XI tonight.

Man United fans flock to ten Hag news

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester United fans have absolutely erupted over a managerial update involving their club and Dutch title-winner Erik ten Hag.

After the Red Devils succumbed to a humiliating loss against Liverpool at the weekend, conceding five without reply to their arch rivals at Old Trafford, it’s safe to say Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position has been under scrutiny.

The United legend has been at the centre of reports hinting he could be grasping on to his tenure by a thread as his side lay seventh in the Premier League table and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.

Given the amount of star power in their squad, not to mention summer investment, it is little surprise Solskjaer is under pressure and there have already been murmurs of who could replace the Norwegian if he is given his marching orders.

The Daily Mail claim that one man United are considering to potentially replace the 48-year-old is Ajax manager ten Hag – with journalist Sami Mokbel writing that he is ‘touted as a potential replacement’ for Solskjaer amid his links to Newcastle.

Flocking to this update, which one supporter called a ‘dream’, it’s safe to say many other Red Devils want to see ten Hag replace their current under-fire boss.

'The battle is not over' – Greig

The former England captain has admitted it is natural to assume that the ICL is winding down after 79 Indian cricketers accepted BCCI’s amnesty offer

Ranjit Shinde02-Jun-2009Though the ICL has received a major setback with the mass exodus of 79 of its Indian cricketers, Tony Greig, a senior member of the ICL board, has said though the time is not right for the league to fight the situation, it did not mean that the battle is over for them.”If the players are seeking reinstatement in order to play first-class cricket in India and are also trying to break into the IPL then it’s natural that there will be a view that the ICL is winding down,” Greig told Cricinfo. “(But) I don’t think Subhash Chandra (who owns the ICL) sees it that way. He is being realistic, the financial crisis has hit the media industry hard and cash is tight. He has obligations to the ICL players which he is working through. This is not the time to be fighting but that does not mean the battle is over.”Greig, who played a key role in setting up the league in 2007, also said that the players’ decision to leave was “perfectly understandable” and added that the league will now have to recruit replacements if it plans to hold a “meaningful” event in the near future.”This all seemed to me to be perfectly understandable but the ICL will now have to face the prospect of recruiting other players or there is no prospect in the short term of a meaningful tournament,” he said. “There is however one other important point that needs to be made and that is the issue of the ‘restraint of trade’ and ‘inducement to breach contract’ court actions being brought by the ICL against the BCCI and the ICC. These actions need to run their course and until they have its not appropriate to speculate on what will happen to the ICL.”The ICL plans to restart its international schedule in October after cancelling its March tournament due to the global financial crisis that left the players with little cricket, leading to the mass exodus.”The ICL has encouraged the players to go down this path,” he said. “When the financial crises hit it was decided to cancel the planned March tournament and as a result the short term prospect of cricket for many of the ICL players diminished. At this point it became difficult for the ICL to insist that players stayed. This particularly applied to the ICL Indian players. As a result the ICL have encouraged its players to take advantage of the situation and try and get themselves back into the establishment game.”Greig also claimed that the Indian board’s amnesty scheme was a bit of a compromise, considering that they had originally banned the ICL players “forever”. “The BCCI has been pushed by the ICC to resolve the ICL issue,” he said. “There have been meetings between the BCCI, the ICC and the ICL but they didn’t resolve the issue. In fact, it got to a point where someone had to do something and so the BCCI set a date. This move was a bit of compromise, as there was a time when they were saying that the ICL players would be banned forever.”He pointed out that the BCCI was missing an opportunity by not arriving at an understanding with Zee, the media group that owns the ICL, and hoped that the situation will change “in the best interests of all cricketers”.”I always thought that a compromise would resolve the issues and I am still of the view that the BCCI are missing an opportunity with Zee,” he said. “There is always a chance that there will be a change in attitude because one should always remember that cricket administrators move on far more quickly than those who run big businesses. Who knows what will happen in the next year or two. Hopefully, whatever it is in the best interests of all cricketers.”

Ritchie criticised for Newcastle vs Saints

Lee Ryder has criticised the display of Matt Ritchie as Newcastle United drew 2-2 at home to Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Disappointing day

While the North East club did manage to pick up their first point of the season at St. James’ Park, ultimately it ended in disappointment as they went 2-1 up in injury time through Allan Saint-Maximin, before giving away a needless penalty with one of the last kicks of the game which was scored by James Ward-Prowse.

While there were some decent performances in the famous black-and-white stripes, others failed to impress heading into the international break.

The Latest: Ritchie criticised

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder was particularly critical of Ritchie, claiming that he ‘did not conjure up’ his usual supply line and was ‘unconvincing’ at wing-back.

The journalist gave the Scotland international a mere 5/10 overall rating for his performance, the joint-second worst out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch.

The Verdict: Justified

The criticism of Ritchie was certainly justified given his overall display, which was not convincing at all.

The 31-year-old lost out on five of his duels in the match, and also failed to record a single shot on goal or successful dribble (Sofascore).

He also failed to block any shots or make any interceptions or accurate crosses, and lost possession of the ball on no fewer than 14 separate occasions, the joint-third most out of any Magpies player (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, Ritchie will have to produce better performances if he is to stay in the team after the international break.
