Shakib Al Hasan became the third player in Test history to hit a century and claim 10 wickets in a match as Bangladesh rolled Zimbabwe over on the final day to take the series 2-0 in Khulna

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Shakib Al Hasan became the third player in Test history to hit a century and claim 10 wickets in a match as Bangladesh rolled Zimbabwe over on the final day to take the series 2-0 in Khulna.Hamilton Masakadza was the only source of resistance with his second fifty-plus score of the Test, but he fell victim to a misbehaving pitch and the tail was snuffed out soon after as Bangladesh recorded their third series win ever, and the first since July 2009.It was understandable that Bangladesh preferred to set a target over 300 but the sluggish pace from their batsmen ate into a considerable amount of time and had left their bowlers with only 68 overs to push for victory. Shakib did not mind the challenge. His canny mix of sliders was more than a match for batsmen who were reluctant to press forward. And once uneven bounce came into play, Zimbabwe were “blown away,” in the words of their captain Brendan Taylor. The Khulna pitch was docile for four days. Even on the fifth, it developed a mind of its own only after tea. The angles Shakib created as he moved around the bowling crease coupled with his accuracy meant the batsmen had to play him. He drew Sikandar Raza forward and had him caught at short leg early. His first over after lunch consumed Taylor, who hung back but was unable to keep his inside edge down. After tea, he delivered a spell of 6-3-20-3 to cap off one of his best performances for Bangladesh.A sure-footed Masakadza was uprooted when Shakib got one to bounce more than expected and silly point claimed a simple catch. Elton Chigumbura walked after the ball leapt up to take his glove and go to slip. Natsai M’shangwe chased after a turner and edged to the keeper to become Shakib’s 10th wicket of the match.Shakib Al Hasan became the third player to score a century and take ten wickets in a Test•AFP

The other two spinners were able deputies as well. Taijul struck thrice, although one was a grubber that bounced twice before taking Malcolm Waller’s off stump and the other was a fortunate lbw decision with last-man Tendai Chatara struck outside the line while playing a shot. Jubair Hossain, the 19-year old legspinner, got rid of Regis Chakabva and ended Zimbabwe’s most profitable partnership of the innings at 70.While Bangladesh’s bowlers had a clear mandate to attack, Zimbabwe’s were more concerned with keeping the runs down. The turn legspinner M’shangwe got from around the wicket did not allow the batsmen to score freely. Bangladesh had come into the final day with an overnight lead of 266, pottered around for 47 off 19.5 overs, waited for Shuvagata Hom’s first Test fifty before finally deciding to declare. It was a day to forget for Zimbabwe’s fielders as well. Mahmudullah was dropped by a back-pedalling Waller in the 70th over. M’shangwe had been the unlucky bowler, but managed to set things right in his next over as Mahmudullah holed out at mid-on for 71, having added only eight runs off 29 balls to his overnight score.M’shangwe had himself to blame for his next slice of misfortune when he dropped a leading edge from Shahadat Hossain off his own bowling. But Masakadza came to Zimbabwe’s rescue when he caught a one-handed stinger at long-on to get rid of Shahadat and give M’shangwe his fourth wicket. The win has moved Bangladesh off the bottom of the ICC Test rankings. Zimbabwe occupy that position now, no matter what happens in Chittagong. The challenge for Mushfiqur Rahim’s men now is building on this success, especially with much stronger oppositions like India and Australia scheduled to play them in 2015.

Shillingford cleared for international return

Shane Shillingford, the West Indies offspinner, has been cleared to return to international cricket after remedial work on his bowling action but will not bowl his doosra which remains illegal.Shillingford was suspended in December, during the tour of New Zealand, following tests in Perth which showed both his doosra and conventional offspinner breached the 15-degree limit laid down by ICC. He had been reported during the second Test against India, in Mumbai, and it was the second time he had been suspended due to an illegal action.Subsequent testing on March 4, again at the University of Western Australia in Perth, showed that his offspinner and straighter ball were now within the regulations.Shillingford made his first-class comeback for Windward Islands against Jamaica this week and claimed 11 wickets in the match. The results of the initial tests in late November came out during the Test series against New Zealand and Shillingford then returned to the Caribbean. Since then he has been working in Barbados alongside Vasbert Drakes, the former West Indies pace bowler, to find a solution to his problems and is now confident he as overcome the problem.”Obviously, I am extremely happy that I will be playing this weekend,” Shillingford said. “I have put in a lot of hard work over the past few months. It was a bit tough at first, but once the coaches told me what I had to do, I went straight to work. I just had to be really patient and I worked really hard.””I am happy for the advice that I have received from the coaches, especially Vasbert, and I must also thank everyone for the support they have given me during this period.”Richard Pybus, West Indies’ director of cricket, said: “It’s great to have Shane playing first-class cricket again and I’m sure Windwards are delighted to have him back.”West Indies’ next Test cricket will come in June when New Zealand visit for a three-match seriesThis story was updated after the ICC cleared Shane Shillingford’s offbreak and arm-ball on March 25

Jaffer wants Mumbai's youngsters to step up

Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer wants the young players of the side to step up and deliver as Mumbai face a must-win fixture against Gujarat in Valsad, beginning on December 30

Amol Karhadkar29-Dec-2013Inconsistency and immaturity are not the adjectives usually associated with Mumbai’s Ranji cricketers, especially their batsmen. But the ongoing season has time and again showcased that the young bunch of Mumbai batting are far from ready to take over the mantle from their seniors. Wasim Jaffer, the bedrock of Mumbai’s batting for well over a decade, minced no words in admitting it was a “concern”.”It is a concern. How long will it [the seniors] last? So they [the younger players] need to obviously step up. They are the ones who will play for the next ten years or something like that. They’ll have to mature and take Mumbai’s batting forward,” Jaffer, the highest run-getter in Ranji Trophy history, said on the eve of Mumbai’s crucial group tie against Gujarat.Jaffer’s frustration was understandable as the batting has let the team down time and time again this season. While no Mumbai batsman, including Jaffer, who has scored three centuries in the season, features in the top 20 scorers this season, only two of their batsmen have averaged over 50. One of them is retired, while the other has been away on national duty.In the absence of Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane – away on national duty – none of the Mumbai middle-order batsmen have managed to cement a place in the side. Hiken Shah, Siddhesh Lad and Suryakumar Yadav have all shown glimpses of talent, but have fallen short on temperament. Aditya Tare hasn’t been assured of a role in the side, made to open the innings or bat down the order depending on the team combination. Jaffer, who has been the stand-in captain for the last two games, said the young players needed to learn how to construct an innings.”They need to understand the phases. When you bat in the first session, you need to bat differently than what you do in the second session. These are the phases that they need to understand and I am sure they will understand since they are working towards it.”Jaffer was optimistic that the younger lot would come good since “they have the talent”. “Surya has scored runs, Tare has scored runs, Lad has scored runs, but they have scored in patches. They are trying and they are hardworking, so they will get there.”The failure of the batsmen has been responsible for Mumbai slipping from the top of the table at the midway stage to joint third going into the last league round. As a result, they have their backs to the wall while going into the match against Gujarat at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium in Valsad. Jaffer was hoping that the batsmen will bail the team out of trouble and avoid a league-stage exit.”It is not a good situation,” Jaffer said. “I have always believed that we should look to qualify with one game remaining. We had 19 points from the first four games, and then in the next three games we only managed to get only four points, which is very bad. From the kind of start we had, we shouldn’t have been in this situation, but you need to understand that we are a very inexperienced side.”[Barring myself], there’s hardly anyone experienced. Tare is playing his second season. Maybe Hiken Shah has been around for some time but other than that, there isn’t any experienced player in this side. I think we played pretty well in the last game, but we messed it up on the last day. Other than that, the bowlers have done well. Shardul [Thakur] has shown a lot of promise.”Hopefully, we will qualify and then it becomes a different ball game in the knockouts. [In the] five-day game, hopefully we’ll have Zak [Zaheer Khan] back and [the injured Abhishek] Nayar may also be back. Knockouts are a different ball game because Mumbai are more used to playing that than others. But getting there is a priority.”

Panesar makes Essex move permanent

Monty Panesar’s future has been resolved after Essex revealed he has signed a two-year contract.Panesar, who endured a troubled 2013, spent the final months of the season on loan at Essex and took 14 wickets in six County Championship matches.Currently in Australia on England’s Ashes tour, Panesar, who was courted by several clubs, has now made his move to Chelmsford permanent and will seek to rebuild his career.”I loved playing for Essex last season,” Panesar said. “In the short time I was there, I was made to feel very welcome, both in the team and around the club.”I will always remember how the supporters and members gave me a heart-warming round of applause when I first came on to bowl at Colchester last August. It helped me to feel respected and loved as a cricketer after experiencing a challenging time in my life.”I am determined to play my part in inspiring the team to be successful in all competitions. I want to help the club build towards the kind of success they enjoyed in its glory days under legendary captains Keith Fletcher and Graham Gooch.”I love the ‘family feel’ of the club, and value the role Essex has played in helping me move towards my best, and gain selection for this winter’s Ashes Series.”Panesar’s tumbled into obscurity last season having only months before played a vital role as England claimed a famous series victory in India. His form for Sussex disappeared and his attitude was questioned. Panesar’s issues came to a head on a now infamous night out in Brighton when he was arrested for urinating on a nightclub bouncer. He was subsequently sacked by Sussex. But a fresh start at Essex did not prove the end of his indiscretions and he was handed a suspended County Championship ban for “potentially threatening and intimidating behaviour towards a member of the opposition”.Despite his increasing baggage, Panesar was selected on England’s Ashes tour and welcomed the chance to resurrect his international career, saying, “It’s an incredible boost I needed as a cricketer and as a person, after a chapter in my life I’m ashamed of.”If Essex can return Panesar to his best, he will prove a most valuable asset as they try to return to Division One of the County Championship after a narrow failure in 2013. They have lacked a quality spinner for a number of years and Panesar has the potential to fulfil the role.”We are delighted that Monty has decided to join our Club,” Essex chief executive Derek Bowden said. “He liked his time here at the end of last season and we enjoyed having him. He was on top of our list for new players and it’s great to finalise his signing in good time for next season”

West Indies likely to play two Tests, three ODIs in India

A day after BCCI announced a proposal to host West Indies in November for a series that had never been mentioned in the ICC’s Future Tours Programme, it appears that West Indies will most certainly play two Tests and three one-dayers in India

A day after BCCI announced a proposal to host West Indies in November for a series that had never been mentioned in the ICC’s Future Tours Programme, it appears that West Indies will play two Tests and three one-dayers in India.A BCCI official confirmed with ESPNcricinfo that West Indies are set to play “two Tests and three ODIs starting in the first week of November”. The final decision will be made once the tour, programme and fixtures committee finalises the dates in consultation with the West Indies Cricket Board. The itinerary of the tour is expected to be announced mid-September.If West Indies are to play two Tests and three ODIs after India’s home ODI series against Australia, which concludes on November 2, it would mean India cannot reach South Africa before November 30, for a series that was originally scheduled to begin on November 18 with a T20 against South African Invitation XI. Add to that the commencement of India’s tour to New Zealand on January 19, which was originally supposed to be the last day of the South Africa tour, which gets trimmed further. However, the official, who has been involved in negotiations with Cricket South Africa ever since BCCI objected to the itinerary eight weeks ago, reiterated that the South Africa tour was not put off. “We understand we have a commitment and we want to tour South Africa, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t safeguard our players’ and board’s interests,” he said. With the BCCI adhering to the players’ demand of having “at least a week’s break” between the South African and New Zealand tours, it appears that India’s original South Africa tour of three Tests, seven ODIs and two Twenty20s will be pruned to two Tests, three ODIs and a solitary T20 and CSA may have no choice but to accept whatever BCCI offers.Players’ demands aside, the official also indicated that the ego problem that the BCCI representatives have had with their South African counterparts has been one of the hurdles while finalising the tour schedule. “Just because an FTP was announced many years ago doesn’t mean you should announce the tour itinerary without even consulting us,” the official said. With time running out for CSA to finalise their domestic season’s fixtures, it appears that the South Africa tour itinerary won’t be sealed till the CSA officials bow down to the pressure exerted by the most influential body in world cricket.

Northants pile on the misery

Division Two leaders Northamptonshire look on course for a fifth win of the season after taking complete control against Leicestershire at Grace Road

ScorecardAndrew Hall added to Leicestershire’s problems with a hundred•Getty ImagesDivision Two leaders Northamptonshire look on course for a fifth win of the season after taking complete control of their LV= County Championship clash against Leicestershire at Grace Road.Leicestershire limped to 47 for 2, still needing another 371 runs to avoid the follow-on, before rain brought a premature end to the second day.Northamptonshire added another 247 runs to their overnight 320 for 4 before declaring on 567 for 7 in mid-afternoon. Kyle Coetzer made a career best 219, Andrew Hall hit his third century of the season and James Middlebrook hammered a quickfire 84. The declaration left Leicestershire with 10 overs to face before tea and they made a poor startNiall O’Brien gloved a catch behind off a lifting delivery from David Willey without scoring and Lee Daggett took a stinging return catch off his own bowling to dismiss Greg Smith for 9. That made it 19 for 2, but Ned Eckersley and Joe Burns stayed together until the tea interval, when the rain swept in to prevent any further play. And an unsettled weather forecast for the next two days could represent bottom-of-the-table Leicestershire’s best hope of avoiding defeat after Northamptonshire ruthlessly stamped their mark on the game.Coetzer began the day on 150 with Hall 65 not out. It was Hall who was the aggressor in the opening overs, scoring 35 runs off 32 balls to reach his century off 144 balls with 16 boundaries. But he was out for 103 when he drove a catch to cover off Nathan Buck, ending a fifth wicket stand of 175 in 46 overs. There was still no respite for Leicestershire with Middlebrook sharing a partnership of 100 with Coetzer. The only disappointment for Northamptonshire was that they missed out on maximum batting points by just five runs. But Coetzer continued to pile on the misery for the home side, reaching the first double hundred of his career off 371 balls with a six and 32 fours. When he was finally out for 219, caught behind edging a wide delivery from Alex Wyatt, he had faced 402 balls and batted for just over eight and a half hours.Middlebrook looked set to become the third centurion of the innings until he skied a catch off Rob Taylor having made 84 off 115 balls with 13 fours. The fall of his wicket brought the declaration, leaving Steven Crook unbeaten on 47. Wyatt was the most successful Leicestershire bowler taking 3 for 107 in 33 overs.
