Arun named RCB assistant coach

Royal Challengers Bangalore have appointed former India fast bowler B Arun as the assistant coach. Arun, who is currently serving as India’s bowling coach, will be part of an IPL side’s staff for the first time, as deputy to Daniel Vettori. Before he was appointed to India’s coaching staff during the England tour last year, Arun was in charge of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in addition to being the head coach of the India team that went to the Under-19 World Cup. Arun believes his experience with the senior India team will help him settle easily in his role at Royal Challengers. “You can draw a lot of confidence after working with some of the top players of the world,” he said. “There is a lot of confidence I will be taking from the Indian job into the IPL.”Despite fast bowling being his forte, Arun has always believed in understanding the mindset of a player to make him grow. And this is one area he believes he can make a difference with at Royal Challengers. “I help a player to discover himself more and a player understanding himself better gives him the best chance to succeed.”Despite having a star-packed line-up Royal Challengers have tended to underachieve, and finished seventh on the points table last year. Arun is confident about bouncing back. “The team is pretty well balance and strong. They have always been front-runners to the title.”Arun also stressed that Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers captain, will continue to be the most important factor in the team’s success. “Virat has an outstanding work ethic, befitting a top athlete in the world. He is extremely passionate about the game. A captain having such an attitude makes it easier for the players to follow him. He walked the talk in Australia. So it would be quite exciting to watch him bring the same attitude into the IPL.”

Glamorgan take charge as bowlers bite back

ScorecardGraham Wagg’s productive match continued•Getty Images

Graham Wagg added three wickets to his half-century as Glamorgan put themselves in a decent position against Wagg’s old county Derbyshire after day two of their Championship match at Cardiff. It was just about Glamorgan’s day as they bowled Derbyshire out for 203 to give them a 79-run lead on first innings. Wagg, who scored 62 on day one, recorded figures of 3 for 56. Glamorgan extended their lead to 224 by reaching 145 for 5 in their second innings, Wayne White with four of the five wickets to fall. Most of the damage to Derbyshire’s reply was done before lunch as they were reduced to 86 for 5 in the morning session – still 196 behind. Not even the presence of India star Cheteshwar Pujara could help the visitors. He was third man out for 7 as Glamorgan’s seamers had a productive morning. After resuming on 8 for 0, the visitors suffered a setback at the end of the third over of the day when Billy Godleman was trapped leg-before by a full ball from Wagg. Derbyshire slipped to 45 for 2 when Ben Slater edged Wagg to Cosker in the gully off a rising ball, which heralded Pujara’s arrival. He showed his class by driving Jim Allenby through cover but the Indian’s innings was short-lived as he went lbw to Allenby.Michael Hogan added to Derbyshire’s agony as Wayne Madsen became the third leg-before victim and five overs before lunch Wes Durston became the fourth to go lbw, this time to Allenby. The parade of lbw victims continued when Gareth Cross was trapped by Hogan with the total on 127 and Alex Hughes fell the same way to Wagg.Though White showed some resistance, young spinner Kieran Bull claimed two wickets in consecutive balls. David Wainwright chipped to Dean Cosker at short extra-cover and then Tony Palladino pulled the 19-year-old to short fine-leg.That left Derbyshire 153 for 9 but White and Mark Footitt frustrated Glamorgan by putting on 50 in only seven overs to ensure their side registered a batting point before White skied Allenby to Wagg at mid-off.Looking to extend their first-innings lead, Glamorgan’s openers Jacques Rudolph and Will Bragg put on 61 but they then lost three wickets in the space of 17 balls. White struck with two lbws in consecutive overs to remove Rudolph and Gareth Rees, who went for a first-ball duck before Bragg was caught behind off Hughes.Allenby and the in-form Chris Cooke stopped the rot to put on 75 in 23 overs. But when Glamorgan had reached 138 for 3, Allenby was caught by wicketkeeper Cross off White to bring nightwatchman Cosker to the middle and Cooke was then bowled by White.

'Not an enemy in the game'

Tributes to former Australia allrounder Gary Gilmour, who has died aged 62.”Gary was a captivating talent and one of the best swing bowlers our country has seen. Gary had the rare ability to single-handedly turn a game and his memory will live on in Australian cricket. Anyone who witnessed Gary in full flight during the 1970s will remember fondly the way he ripped through batting line-ups with his swing bowling.”

Shehzad century sets up massive win for Pakistan

Ahmed Shehzad pummeled Pakistan’s first ever T20 century, propelling his side to a 50-run win over Bangladesh and setting up a virtual quarterfinal against West Indies

Cullinan: Bangladesh were never in the game

Smart Stats

Ahmed Shehzad’s unbeaten 111 is the first hundred by a Pakistan batsman in T20Is. Shehzad had scored Pakistan’s previous highest too – an unbeaten 98 against Zimbabwe last year.

Four of Pakistan’s top-five scores in the World T20 have now come against Bangladesh, with Umar Akmal’s 94 against Australia in an earlier league match being the only non-Australia entry in the top five. Their previous highest against Bangladesh in the World T20 was 73 by both the openers – Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt -, also in a league match of the 2010 World T20.

Shehzad reached his fourth T20I fifty in 30 balls, the fewest deliveries he has taken in T20Is to hit a fifty. His previous fastest fifty came in 32 balls, against New Zealand in 2010.

Mashrafe Mortaza gave away 63 runs from his four overs, which equalled the second highest runs conceded by a bowler in a T20I. Rubel Hossain had also conceded 63 runs against West Indies in a T20I in 2012. The dubious record for conceding the most runs in a T20I is held by James Anderson and Sanath Jayasuriya, who gave away 64 runs against Australia and Pakistan, respectively.

Pakistan’s win by 50 runs in the match equalled their eighth biggest win in terms of runs in T20 internationals. The 103-run win they achieved against New Zealand in Christchurch in 2010 is their biggest win in T20Is.

Ahmed Shehzad pummeled Pakistan’s first ever T20 century, propelling his side to a 50-run win over Bangladesh and setting up a virtual quarterfinal against West Indies on Tuesday. Shehzad punished some ordinary bowling from Bangladesh’s seamers – he scored 87 off 39 balls against them – to ensure Pakistan didn’t suffer any long-term effects from a mid-innings dip, when they lost three wickets for 28 runs in 29 balls. With Shahid Afridi tonking 22 off 9 balls late in the innings, Pakistan set Bangladesh 191 to win. Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque made a decent start, but Bangladesh’s innings disintegrated after both fell in the space of nine balls to leave them 36 for 2 in the sixth over.In the next 34 balls, Bangladesh lost two more wickets to the spinners and didn’t find the boundary even once. With 135 needed from 52, they weren’t going to get anywhere near the target, even if Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain gave the Shere Bangla National Stadium a handful of opportunities to exercise their lungs. The contest had long ended, and Australia’s players, waiting for their match against India, watched on resignedly as their semi-final hopes slowly evaporated. This process may have begun soon after Shehzad started feasting on Bangladesh’s quicker bowlers. His method against them was to set himself up early, moving around his crease just as the bowler entered his delivery stride before finding a stable base by the time of release. He got into a couple of outlandish positions – he missed a paddle off Al-Amin from way outside off stump, and took a single off a leading edge after walking halfway down the pitch to Mashrafe Mortaza – but prospered when he set himself up in a semi-open position with a small jump across the stumps. From there, he had room to swat the length ball over midwicket or take an extra stride forward and carve the ball over extra cover. Both these shots made an early appearance as he took three fours and a six in Mashrafe’s second over and motored to 29 off 13. Pakistan were 34 for no loss after three overs. Bangladesh immediately pulled things back with spin. Shakib Al Hasan and Abdur Razzak conceded just 20 runs off the next four overs, which also produced the wicket of Kamran Akmal via a top-edged sweep.Pakistan lost two more wickets to spin – Mohammad Hafeez was beaten in flight by Razzak and was stumped while Umar Akmal top-edged a slash to backward point. At the 12-over mark, Pakistan were 88 for 3, with Shehzad on 56 and Shoaib Malik on 9 off 11. The three spinners, between them, had bowled eight overs and picked up three for 40.But the reintroduction of seam opened the floodgates. Ziaur Rahman’s was just the sort of pace Shehzad liked and the over went for 22, with Shehzad cutting two fours behind point and shovelling two sixes over midwicket. The 16th over, bowler by Mashrafe, produced 16, including five wides and two fours from Shehzad. At the start of the 19th over, Mushfiqur had one more over from his main offspinner, Mahmudullah, and also had the option of using Nasir Hossain. Instead, Mushfiqur brought back Mashrafe, who had gone for 39 in three overs. Cue the biggest over of the Pakistan innings. Shehzad pulled his first ball for six and was caught in the deep off a no-ball before Afridi joined in the fun with two sixes in two balls over extra cover.A boundary off the last ball from Shehzad took the total for the over to 24. It took Pakistan to 180 with one over left. The spinners had kept Bangladesh in the match, till this point. Now, even before they had begun their innings, they were more or less out of it.

LEI DO EX? NADA DISSO!

Já nos acréscimos, quando o resultado parecia decretado, Fernando Neto chegou bem pela esquerda e cruzou na medida para Jenison testar e Victor Souza fazer uma complicada intervenção garantindo o precioso ponto.

Another Carters ton sets up NSW victory

New South Wales opener Ryan Carters continued his strong start to the season with another century that set up victory for the Blues on the final day against Tasmania in Hobart

ScorecardRyan Carters has been in strong form this season (file photo)•PA PhotosNew South Wales opener Ryan Carters continued his strong start to the season with another century that set up victory for the Blues on the final day against Tasmania in Hobart. Chasing 255, New South Wales reached their target with only four wickets down, with Scott Henry (76 not out) steering the chase after the departure of Carters, although it was captain Peter Nevill (16 not out) who struck the winning run.It was quite a turnaround for the Blues after they conceded first-innings points by falling 90 runs short of Tasmania’s total, but by restricting the Tigers in the second innings they allowed themselves a realistic chase. New South Wales resumed on the final morning on 0 for 43, and added a further 40 runs before the opening stand was broken when Nic Maddinson was caught at mid-off from the bowling of Luke Butterworth for 43.But Carters and Henry put the result beyond doubt with a 138-run partnership that ended when Carters, on 100, was lbw to Sam Rainbird (3 for 52). It was the second first-class hundred for Carters in the past two matches – he had not made one at the start of the season – and his summer also included 94 against the touring England side for a Cricket Australia Invitational XI last month.Carters finished the match on top of New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield run tally so far this season, with 409 at 81.80. Rainbird was on a hat-trick after he bowled Ben Rohrer for a golden duck next ball after Carters was dismissed, and while he did not claim three from three balls, he did pick up the wicket of Kurtis Patterson for 4 before Henry and Nevill finished the chase.

Glamorgan reach final on Allenby exploits

Jim Allenby scored an unbeaten 74 to give Glamorgan a fighting chance after Hampshire’s bowlers had begun well in Dimitri Mascarenhas final home match

Alex Winter at the Ageas Bowl07-Sep-2013
ScorecardJim Allenby played a composed innings of 74 not out before chipping in with two wickets in a miserly spell•PA PhotosJim Allenby has been the saviour of Glamorgan this season. He is so prized the county secured him on a new four-year contract in August; some deal for a 30-year-old. But his value was evident as he top-scored and bowled a painfully mean spell to send Glamorgan to their first showpiece final since 2000.His knees must be creaking given the weight of responsibility he has been forced to carry this year. Without his 1700 runs in all competitions, Glamorgan would have endured a miserable year. Here, he read the conditions far better than any of his colleagues with the bat and, with the ball, showed the correct length to bowl on a sluggish pitch.A 60-ball half-century gave some progress to what was for 30 overs a laboured first innings. From Allenby’s stability, Glamorgan added 81 in the final eight overs. That blitz, which included four fours and two sixes in Ben Wright’s unbeaten innings, was more like the cricket seen recently at the Ageas Bowl. Four hundred runs were scored here in the Friends Life t20 quarter-final and run-fests ensued in England internationals with New Zealand and Australia. The push gave Glamorgan a very competitive total, which they defended well, despite Hampshire’s own late surge of 71 in the final 10 overs, led by Sean Ervine, who arguably played the innings of the day by continuing to find the rope and keep Hampshire in the hunt with 54 in 51 balls. But once he holed out to long-on with 58 needed in 27 balls, the champions were dethroned.Ervine was removed by Michael Hogan – another who has made a standout contribution for Glamorgan and who they have relied on in all formats to be competitive. Having been slightly too full in his opening three overs, which conceded 20, Hogan closed out the match with full, straight bowling to end with 4 for 51.But it was Allenby who led the way with the ball, conceding only 18 runs from his eight overs and claiming the wickets of openers James Vince and Michael Roberts, who were pulling their hair out at how difficult the bowling was to manoeuvre.Allenby praises team effort

“It was a good all-round display. We’ve prided ourselves on putting in consistent team performances and not relying on individuals to win games and that’s what we showed again today. Three or four guys chipped in with the bat and all the bowlers did a good job.
“It was a tough wicket. It was quite slow and took turn. We summed it up quicker than they did and bowled brilliantly. With Michale Hogan and Graham Wagg and our spinners we’re always going to go well. It was probably lucky that we were sent in really because it turned more as the game went on.
“A few times out there I thought I’ve got to just whack this but it would probably have gone straight up in the air. It was good to have Murray Goodwin out there to work with and Ben Wright, that is probably one of the best one-day innings you’ll see. He’s only got 40 but that changed the momentum. He’s done it quite a few times this year without the recognition so it was good for him to do it today on the big stage.
“Whoever we come up against in the final, be it Notts or Somerset. They’re going to have guys who want to be seen on TV and are competing for England squads. They’ll take the focus away from the game. If we don’t do that and stick to our roles which are very well defined this year then we’ll go well.”

The Ageas Bowl has seen some cracking wickets for one-day cricket but a slow, sticky surface was unveiled for this semi-final and the conditions were alien to hosts Hampshire, as they lost a second one-day semi-final this season. Hitherto unbeaten at home in the competition this year, and successful in seven out of eight chases in the group stage, Hampshire were unable to hunt down a target asking for just under a run a ball.Allenby was almost impossible to score off. He bowled wicket-to-wicket on a length just fuller of good. With no pace or angle to work with, the batsmen endured eight overs of largely patting the ball back up the pitch. Only one boundary came from his spell, Jimmy Adams reaching out to flick a ball from middle and off wide of deep midwicket. It was Adams who headed the pursuit. Like Allenby, he largely settled for carefully working the bowling around and it was the Hampshire captain who elected to take the batting Powerplay in the 28th over when the required rate had leaped to 10 an over. Two slog sweeps found the rope but as he attempted a third, Andrew Salter, Glamorgan’s 20-year-old offspinner, slid one on to the front pad that was somehow not given out lbw by umpire David Millns. It was the second exceptionally close lbw appeal Adams had survived. He also escaped a caught behind decision when it appeared he gloved an attempted sweep to Mark Wallace. But he rode his luck and brought up a 73-ball fifty with a leg side swat that bounced over the head of Wallace. It was cricket straight from a schoolboy fixture and matched the six-yard run-out Adams missed earlier in the day; one of three run-out chances Hampshire didn’t take in a lacklustre fielding display.Adams fell top-edging an on-side flick that went straight in the air when 76 were needed from 42 balls and it was too much for the new batsmen who followed to settle on a pitch where timing was very difficult all day, even accounting for a fairytale scenario from Dimitri Mascarenhas, playing his last game for Hampshire. It was not the swansong he had hoped for. He stood at the end of his run at the Northern End preparing to bowl the 31st over of the Glamorgan innings. But the public address delayed his shuffling few strides to the crease to announce that this would be Mascarenhas’s final over at the Ageas Bowl.He acknowledged the generous applause before sending down a typically slippery over from which only three balls were scored off. A standing ovation followed as the Hampshire faithful recognised the final sight of one of their great servants. Hampshire lost the match and a legend.
