Spurs have "more chances" to sign Real Madrid star Ceballos

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur have “more chances” to sign Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid this summer than other interested clubs, per AS.

What’s the word?

The attacking midfielder is reportedly deemed expendable this summer, with Sevilla and Real Betis both interested in securing his signature.

However, the aforementioned report claims that he has a €50m (£44.7m) asking price on his head, with Real seemingly happy to acquiesce to his sale.

The demanded fee, though, could prove prohibitive to his Spanish suitors, the report states, with Spurs more likely to match it.

Ceballos has just won the European Under-21 Championships with Spain, scoring two goals and registering two assists for La Roja.

An ideal signing

Ceballos could be perfect for Spurs.

He hasn’t really been given a chance at Real, making a total of 56 appearances for the club.

Yet he is a gifted midfielder, an excellent passer and a willing runner. Mauricio Pochettino requires both an intense work rate and an elite technical ability from his players, and the Spaniard has both.

Per WhoScored, he averaged a total of 44.1 passes per game in La Liga, with a pass completion rate of 92.6%.

He recycles possession effectively and also averages one key pass per game, along with 1.4 tackles, showing he is no slouch pressing and tracking back despite his obvious attacking flair.

Ceballos is certainly understated – perhaps that is why Real are so willing to cash in – but he is also quietly effective at every aspect of the game.

Spurs could do a lot worse than bringing him in this summer.

Aston Villa Transfer Roundup: Mings update, end of interest in Butland, Borini interest

[ad_pod ]

Friday’s Aston Villa transfer roundup detailed the Villans ending their interest in a Championship striker, a blow in the pursuit of a Manchester United defender and comments from one of the club’s new signings. Today’s edition introduces the reported completion of a defender’s transfer, the end of the chase for an England international goalkeeper and eyes on a former Liverpool forward.

Mings completes move

Tyrone Mings has completed his move from Bournemouth to Villa, the club have confirmed. The deal is reportedly worth £20m, which could rise to £25m. He becomes the club’s sixth new arrival of the transfer window, after spending the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park.

No more interest in Butland

According to Sky Sports News, the Midlands outfit have ended their interest in Stoke City’s Jack Butland. It is reported that Dean Smith and co are not prepared to pay the £25m that the Potters want for the 26-year-old.

Eyes on Borini

Aston Villa have their eyes on former Chelsea, Swansea and Sunderland striker Fabio Borini, according to Calcio Mercato. The 28-year-old is currently on the books of AC Milan, with the Rossoneri reportedly looking for €15m (£13.4m) for his services.

Gabriel Jesus’ Copa America performances give Pep Guardiola food for thought

[ad_pod ]

As the upcoming club season draws closer, Brazil enjoyed some eagerly awaited success on the international stage – winning their first Copa America title for 12 years.

A highlight of Brazil’s undefeated campaign was the form of two Premier League stars, Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino. Collectively, the pair registered nine goal contributions for their country with the Liverpool frontman scoring twice and providing three assists while Jesus added two goals and assists.

Much to the intrigue of Manchester City supporters, Tite deployed Gabriel Jesus as a wide attacking midfielder. The result was a more creative edition of Jesus, with his refined skills and technical qualities illuminating themselves in-keeping with his samba heritage.

Despite being controversially sent off in the final, the 22-year-old succeeded in scoring and assisting against Peru, a feat he also achieved in the 2-0 victory against Argentina in the semi-final.

Such was the extent of his creative involvement, he attained an average rating of 7.3 (via Whoscored) for the tournament while averaging almost two key passes per game (1.7) – which is mightily impressive considering a quarter of his appearances were made as a substitute.

Pep Guardiola is mostly opposed to playing with two recognised strikers – City only did so on two occasions in the league last season – and thus, Gabriel Jesus’ new-found success in a wider role could broaden the club’s attacking arsenal.

City have a plethora of excellent attacking options, particularly talented wingers in the form of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Riyad Mahrez and Bernando Silva. Resultantly, the emergence of another candidate for a fiercely contested position may not signify the best news for City.

However, given Jesus’ largely inferior status in City’s setup – 21 of his 29 league appearances were as a substitute – increased tactical flexibility will only broaden Guardiola’s options.

The former Bayern Munich manager’s success with City and sheer domination of English football has been astonishing. The bedrock of this success has been the Spaniard’s unique brand of attacking football, where ball retention and meaningful utilisation of possession are paramount. However, while the genetic makeup of his style has remained constant the shape has altered: Guardiola used a five different formations as his imperious side successfully defended their Premier League crown.

Deployed in a wider role, Jesus is better equipped to contribute to Pep’s preferred style as evidenced by his passing statistics in the Copa America, where he totalled one additional key pass per game (1.7) to the average he attained in England’s top-flight for City last season (0.7).

Similarly, the 22-year-old’s number of passes per game increased significantly when playing for his country, achieving an average of 21.2 passes per game during Brazil’s triumphant Copa America campaign compared to his total of 12.3 passes per league game for the Citizens last season.

Naturally, his increased involvement in the attacking phase derives from playing wider – with increased opportunities to pass – rather than as the side’s focal point. That said, the purpose of this article isn’t to recommend a permanent repositioning for Jesus. Instead, it highlights his success in a position that he has been mostly untested in during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

No longer should Jesus solely be considered as Sergio Aguero’s understudy, but rather a player capable of operating as both an inverted winger and a centre forward.

His versatility has been no secret to Guardiola, who deployed the Brazilian forward at left-wing on a couple of occasions last season. But, crucially, all his appearances at the Copa America came on the right side of attacking midfield, a position where he has been mostly untried at with City.

Conceivably, in light of Jesus’ Copa America performances, the forward may receive increased involvement next season. Fundamentally, whether Pep Guardiola opts to utilise Jesus’ versatility or maintain his status as Aguero’s backup, Jesus’ success for Brazil diversifies the City boss’ attacking options.

Jesus’ international performances add another string to an already esteemed bow, potentially making the division’s outstanding team even harder to anticipate.

Liverpool fans react to Jurgen Klopp’s update on transfer plans

[ad_pod ]

After the highs of winning the Champions League against Tottenham, Liverpool’s inactivity in the summer transfer window has slightly tempered the good vibes at Anfield.

Only teenage defender Sepp van den Berg has arrived on the red half of Merseyside, and according to Jurgen Klopp, Reds fans shouldn’t expect any blockbuster signings this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Liverpool boss admitted that it wouldn’t be the biggest transfer window in the Reds’ history, and that whilst they were working on potential signings, he was “happy” with the state of the current team.

After hearing their manager’s comments, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter and many were seemingly split over whether they agreed with Klopp’s comments.

Some felt that the decision not to strengthen this summer could come back to haunt them and that it was important that they continued to move forward despite last season’s success.

Others however threw their backing behind Klopp and insisted that their fellow Reds fans simply needed to trust the club’s management, particularly after delivering them their sixth Champions League title.

Everton target Reinier showing just as much potential as Richarlison was back in 2017

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

There is no denying that there is a lot of talk about Brazilian footballers heading to Everton right now.

The Toffees have been linked with Samba stars such as Malcom and David Neres, whilst Richarlison and Bernard already don the Everton badge on a weekly basis.

Intriguingly, the ‘South America x Everton’ crossover has kept up its form with reports linking Brazilian wonderkid Reinier with a move to Goodison Park – a prospect that most of you who play Football Manager will know quite well.

The Flamengo attacker has already got the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan hot on his heels, but it is believed that Goodison Park is his preferred destination due to the presence of Richarlison at the club.

Both men are Brazilian, and both have featured for their country at youth level – Richarlison has since made senior appearances and even scored in the Copa America final which Brazil won.

But how do the duo fare when you compare their stats from the Sudamericano tournament?

Of course, you may have noticed that these statistics are from different age variations of the same tournament.

However, Richarlison didn’t even feature at the Under-17 version, making his first appearances for his country at Under-20 level – if anything, that only reinforces the purpose of the article.

Reinier appears to be showing just as much potential as the Everton No.30 was back in 2017, if not more.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

The teenager linked with an initial £36m move to Merseyside scored one more goal than Richarlison at the Sudamericano despite playing four games less, and also recorded one assist.

Reinier also embarked on more dribbles per game, and created 0.5 more chances on average.

It is still early days and the teenager hasn’t even completed his move to Everton yet, but on the basis of this comparison, you could easily argue that Reinier is showing enough potential to reach the heights that Richarlison is hitting now – he could easily surpass that level too.

Liverpool fans react as Nicolas Pepe fee is agreed with Lille

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after L’Equipe (via GFFN as subscription needed) reported that the Reds have an €80m (£71.7m) agreement in place with Lille for the transfer of Nicolas Pepe, although Inter Milan, Napoli and Arsenal also find themselves in the same situation.

The Ivory Coast international has dominated the headlines this summer as speculation continues regarding his future, but it appears as if we are reaching a conclusion based on this news.

Pepe shone in 2018/19 for the Ligue 1 side, helping them to a second-place finish and a Champions League spot for next term.

The 24-year-old netted 22 league goals – second to only Kylian Mbappe in the scoring ranks – but also created 11 more for his teammates to showcase his creative side.

Liverpool are yet to sign a first-team player this summer, with only 17-year-old Sepp van den Berg coming through the Anfield door, but that may be about to change if the 6 foot attacker chooses the Reds over the other three teams involved.

Let’s see what the Reds supporters on Twitter have been saying about the agreed fee…

Arsenal must break the bank to sign RB Leipzig starlet Dayot Upamecano

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to German publication Bild, Arsenal have had a €60m (£55.3m) bid for RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano rejected.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks have raised the possibility that the Gunners could be looking to offload some of their centre-backs this summer. Club captain Laurent Koscielny threw his future up in the air by refusing to go on the club’s pre-season tour, whilst the north London side are also reportedly open to selling Shkodran Mustafi.

[ad_pod ]

Now, Bild claim that Unai Emery’s side have targeted Upamecano as a man to fill those shoes at the Emirates, but have seen a sizeable bid for the defender turned down by the club’s transfer chief Oliver Mintzlaff.

The report adds that the Gunners could return with a new offer for the Frenchman before the end of the transfer window this week.

The solution to Arsenal’s problems

After conceding 51 goals in the Premier League, it was evident that Emery’s first season in charge at the Emirates hadn’t quite produced an improvement in defence from the latter years of Arsene Wenger’s reign.

The Gunners looked typically weak and fragile at the back, and so it was no surprise to see a deal for highly-rated St Etienne defender William Saliba be completed earlier this window. However, the stipulation surrounding that agreement meant that the 18-year-old headed back to his former club on a season-long loan, and so Arsenal seemingly head into the new season with no new faces amongst their back-line.

Upamecano though, who is just 20, has seen his stock rise immeasurably after a series of impressive performances in the Bundesliga with Leipzig.

The centre-back boasted an impressive 1.5 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per game last season in the league, also showing he could easily adapt to Emery’s style of play in north London with a 82.5% pass accuracy on his 49.9 average passes per game.

The Frenchman is quick, athletic and composed on the ball, and as the Gunners boss looks to implement a high-intensity style of play, Upamecano could be the man to lead the charge from the back. Arsenal simply must break the bank to sign him.

Barcelona’s failure to land Matthijs de Ligt was far from a disaster

[ad_pod ]

It seemed like a done deal halfway through last season. Barcelona and Ajax are two clubs with comparable values and their respect for one another has even prompted discussion that a collaboration agreement could be struck to benefit both parties in the transfer market.

For that reason, the signings of both Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt seemed more like a formality than a soap opera in the making. And sure enough, after some initial hiccups, concerns and paper talk, De Jong was officially announced in January, with the move officially materialising at the beginning of the summer.

Now, he already dons the Blaugrana and it didn’t take long for him to capture the fans’ hearts.

And for the majority of last season, it was widely expected that his partner in crime and best friend would follow sooner rather than later. Fast forward a couple of months and the coveted youngster is in Turin playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo as opposed to Lionel Messi.

The fans were quick to suggest it was actually the Portuguese who sealed the deal with a mysterious handshake and a devious whisper in the ear when the duo met in the Nations League final. The same final De Ligt ended up losing shortly before his move to the Old Lady was made official.

A reported £67.5m was allegedly what it took to secure the signing of one of the most promising centre-backs on the planet. Barcelona were beaten and not even their relationship with Ajax nor the prospect of playing with Messi and his best friend could make the necessary difference. The deal was done, the contract penned and the 20-year-old was flying over to Italy.

Sure enough, this was perceived as a huge loss for the Catalan giant. But while it’s difficult to deny that missing out on a generational talent, the youngest captain Ajax have ever had was a tough pill to swallow, it just may not have been such a gruesome scenario after all.

From the financial side, a deal of £67.5m doesn’t look like a huge hit on Barcelona’s bill. After all, the Catalans have spent more than double those amounts on several players in the last couple of transfer windows and are looking likely to continue the trend going forward. But the wage bill was apparently the problem. The Dutchman’s notorious agent, Mino Raiola, was reportedly demanding extraordinary wages and Barcelona just couldn’t keep up with the rest of the big boys in football. Not after their recent purchases left them dry.

And while sacrificing some of the wage bill for a generational talent doesn’t seem like a crime, especially if you’re putting in enough effort to sell and free up some of that money in the not so distant future, buying him just so others won’t kind of is.

Had he arrived at the Camp Nou, Barcelona would’ve had a total of five centre-backs competing for two spots in the team: Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Jean-Clair Todibo and finally De Ligt.

More importantly, three of those four are still young, in their early twenties and with big careers ahead of them. Todibo is only 19 and, with the Dutchman arriving, he would no doubt have to be shipped out, loaned or just chained to the stands. Either way, that’s far from ideal for a talented youngster with a dream to chase.

So yes, it was a great loss to miss out on De Ligt but it was hardly a necessity. The centre-back position is a spot well covered in Catalonia and further investment would have been frivolous.

Finally, we have that famous Barcelona motto to round things off. “The one who has doubts about playing at Barcelona is no longer needed by us”, stated Johan Cruyff in the days now gone by and this is something the Catalans have been living by for a long time.

Of course, the appointment of Antoine Griezmann and the alleged chase of Neymar contradict that since both have either rejected or abandoned Barcelona in the last couple of years.

But this is very much still something the fans regularly dig out when it fits their agenda and their cause. Regardless of how true on untrue that may be, maybe it is a sign of integrity after all. A statement that reads quite well with a message that they will survive and prosper, with or without De Ligt at their side.

So this choice might have been a difficult one to make for Barcelona but not entirely career-deciding. In fact, once he develops and grows up to be a player who could slot into the Catalans’ gala 11 with no effort, that transfer could make even more sense.

Was this transfer the right choice for the youngster in question, however? His words might say so but the alleged release clause in his contract might not agree with that and it hints that Turin was not his preferred destination after all.

Who knows, maybe there’s still a chance “De Twins” will one day be reunited under the lights of the Camp Nou.

Only time will tell.

Leicester fans debate Islam Slimani after sealing Monaco loan

[ad_pod ]

The transfer window may be shut for English clubs but that hasn’t stopped activity happening elsewhere in Europe.

Leicester City’s Islam Slimani has joined AS Monaco on a season-long loan which has sparked a debate amongst many fans at the King Power Stadium.

The 31-year-old joined the Foxes in a then club-record £29m deal in 2016 from Sporting Lisbon.

Having signed a five-year deal, the striker is still contracted in the east Midlands until the end of next season.

Was James Maddison right to take on Jeremy Clarkson. “Jamie Vardy” has his say in the video below…

This will be Slimani’s third loan spell away from Leicester having featured for fellow Premier League side Newcastle United and Turkish giants Fenerbahce over the past 18 months.

He has netted 13 times in 46 appearances for the Foxes but it appears the Algerian isn’t fancied under current boss Brendan Rodgers – even though there are only two other strikers at the club in Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Taking to Twitter, a couple of fans believed the 6 foot 2 forward could’ve been used for them this season with one highlighting the fact they are pumping balls into the box to no one.

Another supporter warned others to watch out for him bagging 20 or more this season whilst a further fan had hoped he was sold rather than making a temporary switch.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Wolves boss Nuno Santo would have made a silly call if he sold Adama Traore

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolves have booked their place in the Europa League group stages for the first time in their history as a 5-3 aggregate win over Torino was enough to see them advance.

The qualification stage has been strenuous, having played six matches in the competition already but there have been plenty of highlights.

Raul Jimenez has bagged six goals whilst supporters have already been gifted with trips to Armenia and Italy this season.

One standout has been Adama Traore, who was handed his first start at right wing-back against Crusaders, providing an assist for Diogo Jota’s opener and has since recorded two more in the competition.

The winger-turned-defender has looked reborn in his new role, but it could have been oh so different.

On the Chalkboard

Back in April, TEAMtalk revealed that the Spaniard wasn’t in Nuno Santo’s long-term plans as he had failed to cement a regular first-team spot amongst the team last season – he made just eight Premier League starts.

Now nearly five months later, Traore has looked like the best choice they have at right wing-back especially with Matt Doherty’s rough start to the season, averaging a rating of 6.31 – though, he has been far from match fit.

Have you heard the strangest chant in the Premier League yet? Hear it in the video below…

But one man’s misfortune is another man’s gain, and that has to be the case for the 5 foot 10 ace.

His performance on Thursday night against Torino showed he could compete on a big stage, against a team of top-draw quality considering they ply their trade in Serie A, unlike their previous opponents that play in the Northern Irish and Armenian leagues.

In the game, Traore recorded one assist, one key pass, won five dribbles, had a 100% success rate for tackling and had 76 touches, per MezzalaScout.

That’s quite an outstanding showing from a right wing-back.

His overall showings in the Europa League have been fabulous and demonstrates why Nuno would have been silly to sell him.

If Traore continues to keep Doherty out, deciding to maintain his services will look like a masterstroke.
