Everton: Lampard must keep Branthwaite

Everton have had an awful 2021/22 campaign thus far – with the Toffees embroiled in a tough relegation battle, and Frank Lampard trying everything he can to keep the club from dropping into the Championship next season.

Many players have already been linked with moves away from Goodison Park following their disappointing campaign in the Premier League, with Richarlison, in particular, heavily speculated to leave the club this summer.

With that being said, the Toffees boss must exercise some damage control when it comes to keeping the team together – no matter the outcome at the end of the season – and now another player is reportedly being lined up for a move away from the club.

The Daily Mail reported this week that Manchester United are targeting the Everton centre-back for a move to Old Trafford, with the youngster catching the eye of the 20-time Premier League title winners.

The 19-year-old has made just six appearances for the senior team across all competitions this term, with his most notable performance coming in his first Premier League outing of 2021/22 – scoring in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge under Rafa Benitez.

Branthwaite was hailed “fabulous” by Glen Hoddle following this display, and Benitez was also full of praise for the young defender, stating: “He showed character and he’s a player who has potential. Always with the young players, you have to be careful but you have to give them a chance if it is possible.”

Since Frank Lampard has taken over from the Spaniard, Branthwaite has been given three opportunities to prove he has what it takes to compete for a spot in the Everton backline, and his defensive statistics speak for themselves.

The 6ft5 tank has understandably used his height to impose himself on opponents, winning 67% of his aerial duels, as well as making an average of 3.3 clearances and 0.8 tackles per game.

He has also averaged an 81% pass accuracy inside his half, proving he can be a threat and offer presence for the Toffees.

Ultimately, Lampard must avoid a disaster in losing the £5.1k-per-week defender this summer, as sanctioning the sale of one of the club’s most promising up and coming talents may well be a decision that the Goodison Parkfaith never forgive the 43-year-old for.

Shashikala Siriwardene, who returns as captain of the Sri Lankan team for the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge, has said she’s keen to begin her second leadership stint on winning note. The tournament, featuring teams ranked between five and ten in a series of one-day and Twenty20 matches, will be held in Potchefstroom in South Africa between October 6th and 16th.Siriwardene, a 25-year-old allrounder who has played 46 ODIs, was captain from 2005 to 2009, before she was demoted and then dropped from the team for last year’s ICC World Twenty20. “My job is to prove that I can take my team forward and improve the rankings,” she said. “We can be on par with the best four teams in the world.”She will take over as captain from 31-year-old Chamani Seneviratna, who has been on the international circuit since 1997. “She is a very senior player and has been in the team since women’s cricket started in Sri Lanka,” Siriwardene said. “We have a good relationship and is still in the squad. She is also advising and telling me what needs to be done. Together we will take the team forward.”Sri Lanka have played only two one-dayers in the past 18 months, and the upcoming tournament provides them much-needed matches. “This will be a good exposure trip for us because we play teams like Pakistan often but not other sides like Netherlands and Ireland,” she said. “It is a huge opportunity for us to show Sri Lanka and the world that we belong at this level.”Sri Lanka will play a one-dayer against each of the five other teams in the competition – South Africa, Netherlands, West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland – in seven days starting October 6. They are grouped with Ireland and Pakistan for the Twenty20s that follow.

Liverpool reportedly agree terms with Nunez

Liverpool have reportedly agreed on personal terms with Benfica star Darwen Núñez ahead of possibly signing the striker this summer.

What’s the latest?

According to sources online (via Sports Illustrated), his agent Jorge Mendes has been turning down offers from other potential suitors as the player wants to join Liverpool with terms already agreed upon verbally.

The Uruguayan is rated at £36m and after a great season has attracted interest from several top clubs. He currently earns £31k-per-week at Benfica which would rise to £60k-per-week if he joins the Reds.

Klopp will be buzzing

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with the news that Núñez is reportedly one step closer to a move to Anfield. The Reds have much-improved squad depth this season which has been one of the reasons they have reached the latter stages of every competition.

The club are still on for the quadruple, having already lifted the Carabao Cup, and they are now in the final of the FA Cup, the semi-final of the Champions League and the title is going down to the wire.

However, it’s never too early to start planning for the next campaign and Núñez would be the perfect addition. The 22-year old has an outstanding goal scoring record this season with 25 league strikes in 26 appearances

The “special” striker’s form hasn’t been enough to propel Benfica to the league title as they currently sit third in the table with no guarantees of Champions League football next season.

If they don’t qualify for Europe’s premier competition then it makes it even more likely that Núñez will want to depart the club, and with Merseyside seeming like the most likely destination, it shouldn’t be long before we see him in the Premier League.

When you compare him to Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane, the three players who usually play through the middle for Liverpool, he has a much better goal per 90-minute average at 1.25.

The player closest to him is Jota on 0.70. Whilst the Premier League is undoubtedly a much tougher division, we don’t think it would take long for him to adapt, and with the number of chances Liverpool create it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get close to those numbers.

Guyana fail to deny South Australia 100% record

Callum Ferguson made a typically intelligent half-century and, with assistance from No. 5 Cameron Borgas, helped South Australia preserve their 100% record

The Bulletin by Siddarth Ravindran21-Sep-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Guyana had their moments in both innings, but could not do enough for a victory•AFP

South Australia had already strolled into the semi-finals and seemingly had little to gain against the also-rans from Guyana in their final league match, but still benefited as their largely untested middle-order got a thorough and much-needed workout in Johannesburg. Callum Ferguson made a typically intelligent half-century and, with assistance from No. 5 Cameron Borgas, helped South Australia preserve their 100% record in the league phase by powering the Redbacks to their highest total of the tournament. The other challenge for South Australia was for their bowling attack to manage without the furious pace of the injured Shaun Tait, a test they barely passed after Ramnaresh Sarwan made Guyana’s first half-century of the tournament to make the game much less of a mismatch than was initially feared. It was easily Guyana’s best performance of the tournament, troubling South Australia with the new ball and then remaining in the hunt for much of the chase despite facing a mammoth target. In perfect batting conditions, Sarwan exploited the short boundary towards long-off to siphon plenty of runs, and was well supported by the youngsters, Richard Ramdeen and Steven Jacobs, as Guyana asked South Australia’s bowlers plenty of questions.Perhaps Guyana’s best phase of the match was the Powerplay after being asked to bowl. Seven deliveries into the innings, South Australia had cracked three boundaries to sprint to 15 but seamer Paul Wintz, who was clobbered by Kieron Pollard on his debut against Mumbai Indians, managed to extract some bounce to remove Daniel Harris and slow the scoring. Then, the tournament’s highest run-getter, Michael Klinger, was undone by a back-of-the-hand delivery from Christopher Barnwell, and holed out to midwicket. In the next over, Wintz served up the ball of the innings – a yorker that speared into Graham Manou’s boot and then onto off stump. South Australia were 41 for 3. The lowest contribution by their top three wickets previously in the tournament was 127.Ferguson and Borgas put on 88 for the fourth wicket with little risk, and set the tone as their side plundered 117 in the final nine overs. Guyana were left to rue what might have been after being on top at the halfway stage of the innings, with their spinners – the architects of their Caribbean T20 triumph – keeping the heavy-hitters of South Australia quiet. The carnage began in the 14th over when Guyana’s fifth bowler Jacobs, an offspinner who doesn’t believe in flight, overstepped twice and had one of his two consecutive free-hits smashed over cover by Ferguson for the first six of the innings. One legitimate delivery cost 12 runs, after which there was no reining South Australia in.Before that, there had been only three boundaries in an eight-over spell when Ferguson and Borgas rebuilt. Despite not offering any threat, Jacobs was given another over – the 17th – which Ferguson and Derwin Christian hammered for 22. Jacobs finished with 3-0-50-0. Two sixes and four fours in the final three overs sent South Australia rocketing to 191. Strangely, Wintz, who was so impressive with the new ball, bowled only three overs.Just like when they were bowling, Guyana were the more impressive side for more than half the innings when they batted. Their finest batting patch was the 56-run stand between Sarwan and Jacobs. They were together for five overs, each of which was taken for at least ten runs, which meant that at the end of the 12th Guyana were at a solid 106 for 2.The chase spluttered with the loss of three wickets in four overs, but Sarwan kept fighting. A lovely square drive for four off Gary Putland was followed by a six that just cleared sweeper cover, leaving Guyana needing a stiff, but not impossible, 42 off the final three overs.Harris had failed with the bat, but he delivered with the ball, removing Derwin Christian and, more importantly, Sarwan in the space of three deliveries in the 18th over. Guyana eventually ended up 15 runs short.South Australia will be satisfied at coming through a tough battle ahead of the the tournament’s biggest games, and relieved at keeping the winning run going, something they failed to do in the final league of the Big Bash campaign after sweeping through the initial stages of that tournament.

Clássico entre Goiás e Atlético-GO é destaque do Campeonato Estadual

Explosive Gayle puts West Indies on top

An unsettled West Indies were expected to struggle against the formidable Sri Lanka, but Chris Gayle blasted an attractive double-century in Galle to leave the visitors in charge

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Chris Gayle’s celebrated his hundred by lying down on the pitch•AFP

A scorching double ton from Chris Gayle and half centuries from Adrian Barath and debutant Darren Bravo led West Indies to a position of complete dominance in the first Test, as they ended the opening day on 362 for 2. Sri Lanka’s modus operandi for Test matches at Galle has long been to bat first and bat big to put pressure on the opposition line-up, but it was the hosts who were at the receiving end of a stellar West Indian imitation of their tried and tested method for winning matches at the picturesque venue.Smart Stats

Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 219 is the second highest score by a West Indian batsman in Sri Lanka, just two runs behind Brian Lara’s 221. It is also the second highest score by a batman at Galle behind Mahela Jayawardene’s 237 in 2004 and the fifth highest by a West Indian batsman in the subcontinent.

Gayle hit eight sixes during his 219 to go on top of the list of West Indian batsmen with most sixes in an innings. He now has 74 sixes in Tests which puts him seventh in the list of batsmen with most sixes.

Gayle’s present strike rate of 88.66 is the fourth highest by a West Indian batsman for a 150 plus score since 1970.

The century opening stand for the West Indies was their first in Sri Lanka. In ten previous opening partnerships in Sri Lanka in the 2000s, they aggregated just 60 runs.

The 196-run stand for the second wicket between Gayle and Darren Bravo is the highest at Galle, going past Tharanga Paranavitana and Kumar Sangakkara who added 181 against India in July 2010.

Gayle was blisteringly savage, particularly in the second session of the day. His unbeaten innings of 219 contained 26 fours and an incredible eight sixes – the most by a West Indies batsman in a single innings. He walloped the spinners over long on repeatedly in signature style, and was also especially brutal on the pull, once muscling a barely-short Ajantha Mendis delivery over the mid wicket boundary for six. The left hander plundered 25 runs in an astounding seven-ball burst to bring up his 13th Test match century, and his first in the subcontinent, and celebrated in unconventional style: lying down mid-pitch for a moment, perhaps to better soak in the applause from his teammates and spectators.Everything Gayle did turned to gold. A lazy looking swat over cover carried all the way over the ropes and an outrageous reverse sweep off Suraj Randiv rocketed to the point fence. Nothing Sri Lanka did could halt the West Indies opener today and he rarely looked troubled at the crease, shaking off a spate of hopeful shouts towards the end of the day to continue his rampage towards 200, which he completed in just 221 deliveries. The celebrations were slightly more muted this time, with a wry smile and a raising of the bat sufficing.Gayle found support in Adrian Barath in the first session of the day, who carefully batted out a testing opening spell from the Sri Lanka seamers, before making use of the excellent batting conditions to reach his second half century in Test cricket. There was little joy for the hosts’ pacemen once the modest swing and seam movement on offer deserted them after the first half hour of play, a fact not helped by some indisciplined bowling on their part. A Randiv topspinner extracted some bounce from the flat Galle surface to get rid of Barath just minutes before lunch, but the West Indies innings continued to race along at close to 4 and a half runs an over after the break, as Gayle upped the ante and Darren Bravo held firm at the other end.Bravo’s 58 was a technician’s dream in comparison to Gayle’s unorthodox magnificence, the young left-hander cover driving the spinners beautifully to the fence each time the ball was tossed up. He also negotiated the fast bowlers without a fuss, making use of some defensive fields to rotate the strike to his more bloody-minded partner, who unleashed from the other end. The debutant brought up his half century with another cracking cover drive off Mendis after tea, but perished trying to pull the same bowler soon after as a top edge ballooned to Thilan Samaraweera at square leg, who backpedalled to take a good catch.Shivnarine Chanderpaul arrived at the crease with the score already on 306 for 2 and played out the final period of the day without incident with Gayle, who couldn’t resist making use of some tired Sri Lankan bowling to pick up some late runs. The hosts will be hoping for the wicket of Chris Gayle and a vastly improved bowling performance in tomorrow’s morning session if they are to have any chance of wresting back control of a game that is fast slipping out of reach.
