Hunter drops Sunderland manager claim

James Hunter has now dropped a claim on Sunderland’s ongoing hunt for a new manager.

The Lowdown: Keane in?

The Daily Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards revealed earlier on Wednesday that Roy Keane is expected to be appointed as the new coach at the Stadium of Light ‘before the weekend’, with a deal now ‘close’ for his return.

However, while nothing has been finalised, other candidates will still be in the frame for the job, with previous updates revealing that Keane is closely followed by Grant McCann as the second main contender.

The Latest: Update soon?

Taking to Twitter, The Chronicle journalist Hunter has now claimed that there must be an appointment, or at least a ‘meaningful update’, from the board in their manager search ‘in the next 24hrs’:

“Surely there has to be a head coach appointment – or at least a meaningful update from the powers that be – over the next 24hrs.

“This situation cannot be allowed to continue going into a third game.”

The Verdict: Get someone in now!

With the Black Cats facing what now looks to be a crucial game away at AFC Wimbledon at the weekend in terms of their hopes for promotion, the board must get someone in now, whether that would be Keane or another candidate.

While it is harsh given how he was thrust in the deep end following Lee Johnson’s exit, Mike Dodds has struggled in both of the matches that he has now been in charge, losing to both Doncaster Rovers and Cheltenham Town.

He was criticised for his lack of quick thinking to make necessary changes against Doncaster, and of course blew a 1-0 lead against Cheltenham on Tuesday night.

Nonetheless, the Black Cats simply cannot let this continue past the weekend, and so a new boss needs to be brought in fast.

Minister hints no change to Ashes TV coverage

New sports minister Hugh Robertson has given a strong hint that the Conservative government will abandon plans to put home Ashes Test back on free-to-air TV

New sports minister Hugh Robertson has given a strong hint that the Conservative government will abandon plans to put home Ashes Tests back on free-to-air TV.The previous Labour government appeared to be backing proposals to return cricket to terrestrial TV, which created much opposition from the ECB and counties which feared a major loss of income, but when a decision wasn’t made before the general election there was always a chance the plans would change.Robertson also suggested that the current tough economic conditions mean that sporting bodies should be allowed to maximise their revenues, although he urged them to look at income streams away from the multi-million pound world of TV rights.”The previous Government did this for political purposes but then didn’t include it in their manifesto which is interesting,” Robertson told the Wisden Cricketer website. “Since then the economic situation has deteriorated quite sharply. Big public expenditure cuts will impact in sport so the way to equalise that is to give them [governing bodies] the freedom to market their own rights.”Since 2006 all live England cricket in the UK has been shown on BSkyB with highlights of home internationals available on Five. The recent IPL was shown on ITV4, a digital channel which is available over free platforms.

Lampard must unleash Townsend vs NUFC

Everton will travel to the North East to face Newcastle United tonight in their first Premier League game under the guidance of new manager Frank Lampard, and he will be hoping he can emulate the energy and success from the FA Cup clash at the weekend.

The former Derby County manager made an outstanding first impression at Goodison Park as he led his team to their highest-scoring win of the season against Brentford, progressing into the last 16 of the domestic competition, which would have been a huge boost for fans who returned to the stands for the first time since they protested against the owners.

One player who didn’t start but made a great impact was Andros Townsend, with the 30-year-old scoring the fourth goal to seal the 4-1 victory in the last few minutes of the game.

Townsend is having an outstanding season for Everton compared to some of his peers, and when you consider that he was a free transfer for the Toffees, his impact and output has been worth its weight in gold during a season full of injury issues and poor form.

The right winger has managed 27 appearances, seven goals and three assists for the side this term, making him the Toffees’ top goal-scorer in 2021/22.

On top of that, he offers unrivalled experience in the challenges ahead of Everton, which is something Lampard must not overlook when making his team selection against the Magpies.

Everton have found themselves teetering on the edge of a relegation battle just four points off the drop zone currently in 16th, and this kind of must-win football in a scramble for points to climb back into safety is something Townsend is all too familiar with.

The £48k-per-week gem who was hailed “absolutely tireless” by football podcaster, Dan Cook, could be considered an expert in the challenge that lies ahead for the Merseyside outfit, as he played for tonight’s opponents in their bottom of the table battle in 2016, that saw Newcastle relegated, and then joined Crystal Palace for five years, who have had their fair share of relegation fights too.

Although Anthony Gordon has been in flying form, with four goal involvements in his last six outings, Lampard could think more outside of the box on the best way to tackle Eddie Howe’s Tyneside team this evening.

That’s by adding the experience and work rate of Townsend in the forward line over the youngster, unleashing the potential difference needed to secure the three points at St James’ Park.

Newcastle must axe Joe Willock vs West Ham

Newcastle United will be looking to make it four wins from four as they take on West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Magpies have picked up maximum points from their last three games as they beat Leeds United, Everton and Aston Villa. These results have now moved the club out of the relegation zone and four points clear of 18th-placed Norwich.

One change Eddie Howe could make from their last outing against Steven Gerrard’s side is ruthlessly axing Joe Willock in favour of Bruno Guimaraes because of the physical edge the Brazilian could bring.

In the Premier League this season, Willock has lost 124 of his individual duels – including 74% of his aerial battles in midfield. His lack of physical strength was on display last week in the win over Aston Villa as he lost 10 of his 17 duels on the pitch, whilst he was also dribbled past three times – as per SofaScore.

It is worth saying that the £80k-per-week lightweight also completed 100% (11/11) of his attempted passes and created one chance, although he also failed in 75% (3/4) of his attempted dribbles. This gave him a SofaScore rating of 6.7 – the joint-lowest in the team on the day.

Whilst one performance does not define a player and he was enjoying an upturn in form prior to that match, this upcoming clash with West Ham may not be best suited to his skillset. The statistics suggest that will be bullied by David Moyes’ midfield battlers, with Declan Rice having won 138 duels this season and Tomas Soucek having won 161 individual battles.

This shows that both of them excel at winning duels by getting about the midfield and making challenges and that is why Willock could struggle in this game as he has been a lightweight in his duels. He could be bullied by the West Ham duo and that could cost the Magpies if it allows the Hammers to dominate the match.

Guimaraes, meanwhile, won 158 contests in 20 Ligue 1 matches for Lyon in the first half of the season – winning 58% of his duels overall. This suggests that he is physically superior to Willock and could, therefore, be a better option for Howe in this particular match where physicality could hold the key to winning the game in the middle of the park.

Barresi carries Netherlands to major victory

Netherlands secured their first one-day international victory against a Full Member nation as Wesley Barresi hit a match-winning 65 off 43 balls against Bangladesh in Glasgow

Cricinfo staff20-Jul-2010Netherlands 200 for 4 (Szwarczynski 67, Barresi 65*) beat Bangladesh 199 for 7 (Kayes 53, Borren 3-29) by six wickets
ScorecardNetherlands secured their first one-day international victory against a Full Member nation as Wesley Barresi hit a match-winning 65 off 43 balls against Bangladesh in Glasgow after the game was reduced to 30 overs per side. Barresi, playing just his seventh ODI, added 96 with Bas Zuiderent and the pair batted superbly to steady a run chase that had threatened to fall apart after Eric Szwarczynski’s 67.The victory also means Netherlands will join Ireland and Kenya on the main ICC rankings table having gained the required victory against a Full Member while holding an overall win ratio of 60%. It was a disappointing end to the tour for Bangladesh, who had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Ireland and had their match against Scotland washed out, having hoped to dominate their Associate opposition.Szwarczynski batted confidently, with his runs coming from 54 deliveries, and he dominated an opening stand of 61 with Alex Kervezee but, when he was lbw to Shakib Al Hasan, Netherlands were 104 for 4 and still needed 96 from 15 overs. However, Barresi and Zuiderent paced the chase so impressively that there were seven balls to spare when Barresi guided the winning boundary to third man off Shafiul Islam.Barresi stuck 11 boundaries while Zuiderent played the anchor role during the match-winning stand and his lone boundary was a six to open his account off Shakib. Bangladesh, though, didn’t help their own cause with some poor fielding, including an horrendous drop by Mahmudullah to give Szwarczynski a life when he had 29.Imrul Kayes had earlier top-scored for Bangladesh with a solid 53, but Peter Borren’s three wickets proved crucial in keeping the Test nation to a chaseable total. They were also boosted by the early departure of Tamim Iqbal who was caught behind off Mudassar Bukhari for 2 in the second over. However, Junaid Siddique managed a fair impression of his colleague as he raced to 31 off 19 balls to kick-start the innings before he, too, fell to Bukhari from a top-edged pull. But Siddique’s rapid innings had given Bangladesh time to regroup as Kayes and Jahurul formed a solid partnership. Runs continued to come at a decent pace until Jahurul fell in the 18th over, lofting to long-on, to begin a mini-collapse as three wickets fell for seven, including Kayes for 53.Shakib struggled to find any momentum as he took 20 balls over 15, but Mahmudullah and captain Mashrafe Mortaza ensured the innings didn’t fade away. They added 33 in five overs for the seventh wicket. Once again, though, it was Bangladesh’s bowling and fielding which cost them the match.
