Celtic on brink of permanent Jota deal

Celtic’s pursuit of a permanent deal for Jota could be ‘close to reaching completion’, according to The Daily Record.

The lowdown: Busy Hoops

Celtic have had a busy January transfer window so far, with four deals already completed.

Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Daizen Maeda have all arrived from the J1 League, while Johnny Kenny has joined from Irish outfit Sligo Rovers.

The Hoops are also lining up another new face in the form of Charlotte FC midfielder Riley McGree.

And on top of that, they’re hoping to turn summer loan deals for Jota (who belongs to SL Benfica) and Cameron Carter-Vickers (a Tottenham Hotspur player) into permanent moves.

The latest

The Record’s Craig Swan and Michael Gannon write that the club have been in talks with Benfica over a ‘long-term agreement’.

And those discussions ‘have progressed well’, with Jota now described as being on the ‘brink’ of becoming a Celtic player.

It’s thought that he will cost them around £6million, potentially ranking the deal as one of the ten biggest in their history.

The verdict

You could make the argument that tying down Jota would be Celtic’s most important piece of January business so far.

The 22-year-old has proven that he can light up Scottish football, scoring five goals and providing four assists in his first 11 Premiership appearances.

Jota has also shone on the continental stage with four direct goal contributions in his five Europa League group stage outings.

Overall, only Kyogo Furuhashi (15) can boast more goal involvements, and he’s played four more games.

Jota may only get better in the coming years too, and so there’s also significant resale potential here if he keeps playing at the level he has this term.

Ange Postecoglou certainly can’t complain about a lack of backing midway through the season, with the McGree (£2.3million) and Jota deals set to take their January spend to roughly £10.5million.

In other news, Celtic are willing to sell a fan favourite on the cheap.

Gilchrist joins chorus for IPL window

Gilchrist said that while players were interested in not having international fixtures clash with the Twenty20 tournament because of the money they stand to earn, the window would also help build the IPL brand

Adam Gilchrist says a window will help build the IPL brand•Associated Press

Adam Gilchrist, the Deccan Chargers captain, has become the latest to talk of the need for an IPL window. While players were interested in avoiding a clash between the Twenty20 tournament and international fixture list because of the money they stand to earn, he said, the window would also help build the IPL brand.”The ICC and IPL need to really sit down at the table and look closer (at the window),” he said, a day ahead of his team’s opening match against Kolkata Knight Riders. “I am beginning to believe that the players across the globe would like a window to be available because of the glaringly obvious part of a good financial return for players.”But along with that it is premier club competition in the world. If the players feel part of that and are desperate to be part of it is only going to help the brand and there is great benefit for the game of cricket.”Deccan are one of the teams least affected by the lack of a window, with only Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris expected to miss a chunk of the IPL due to international commitments. West Indian fast bowler Kemar Roach could also miss the first couple of IPL matches since he will be busy wrapping up the one-day series against Zimbabwe.A surfeit of Twenty20 matches are scheduled over the next couple of months, with the World Twenty20 starting less than a week after the end of the IPL. Gilchrist said he was happy the IPL was not looking to expand beyond the current six-to seven-week timeframe though new teams were joining the competition next season.”The IPL needs to be aware of not getting too big to the detriment of the game,” he said. “I read with interest Lalit Modi’s very pleasing comments that the commissioner and the committee are aware of that as they look to expand the competition but they are not looking to take too much more time.”

DCL, Richarlison & Mina back for Everton

Lots of Everton fans have been left buzzing over some injury news that has emerged ahead of their game away at Norwich City in the Premier League.

As per The Athletic journalist Patrick Boyland, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Yerry Mina are all now back in training for the Goodison Park faithful, meaning that they could all feature against the Canaries if deemed fit enough.

All three of them rank among the Merseyside club’s ten best players so far this season, according to WhoScored, with Calvert-Lewin number one.

The striker has scored three goals in the four matches that he has played in the Premier League this term, and having him back with Richarlison will certainly give Rafa Benitez’s team more of a goal threat, while Mina provides another solid option defensively.

Jennings banking on improved Indian players

Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Ray Jennings is confident the team could cope despite missing Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor

Ray Jennings believes Virat Kohli is a future India captain•AFP

Royal Challengers Bangalore will be a touch short on batting firepower for the first half of the IPL due to the absence of some of their big-hitting foreign stars, but their coach Ray Jennings was confident the team could cope despite missing Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor.Pietersen will be busy with England’s Tests against Bangladesh until March 24 and Taylor will be occupied by the series against Australia until the end of the month. “It’s is an issue when you miss the likes of Taylor and KP, but you know what I’m a positive guy,” said Jennings after supervising a two-and-a-half hour training session at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. “I’m notgoing to look at that, they arrive on the first of April and so be it, I’ve got to start finding another Kevin Pietersen in the stands, or turning some of our players like [Manish] Pandey or [Virat] Kohli into a Pietersen.”While some of the foreign players will miss parts of the tournament, Jennings was pleased with the progress of several of the Indian players in the squad, such as fast bowlers Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun who were the leading wicket-takers in this season’s Ranji Trophy.Virat Kohli, who has started to turn in some impressive performances with the national team, was another member whose development has heartened the coach. Jennings, who first saw Kohli during the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, identified him as someone who could lead the national side in the years ahead.”I thought he was unfocussed [in 2008], I sat him down during the IPL in South Africa, and I said you know what, I’m not going to accept certain things,” Jennings said. “He’s responded to me, in October I said to him he needs to start setting standards for himself, because I see himas a future Indian captain. I have watched him in the South African series, he’s become a very organised human being, he’s settled down, he’s not going over the top.”Kohli wasn’t at his best last October during the Champions League Twenty20, whereBangalore failed to make the semi-finals. Jennings, however, said that his side had actually played better in the Champions League than in the IPL, where they finished as runners-up. “Don’t judge results by the trophy,” he said. “Because I thought we played better cricket in October than in South Africa, we scored 180 three times. The playing and overall unit wasbetter.”The IPL returns to India this season after the competition was held in South Africa in 2009 because security of players couldn’t be guaranteed due to Indian general elections taking place at the same time as the tournament. Over the past few weeks, several player unions have raisedconcerns over player safety, but Jennings said he had no worries about coming to India. “From my side I have no problem with India, it’s a good place to come, I trust the bosses in what they are doing,” he said. “I’m very positive about it, from my side I’m encouraging the players to behere on time, and I have no negative feedback from the players.”

Spurs enter Jonathan David race

Tottenham Hotspur are the latest team to be linked with a move for Jonathan David…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Canadian outlet The Sports Network, who claim that Spurs are one of many teams to have enquired about the availability of the Lille talisman, though any move seems more likely to happen in the summer.

Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are mooted with interest, alongside LaLiga giants Real Madrid.

It’s thought that the 21-year-old is “open” to every possible destination after his agent, Nick Mavromaras, told TSN that David would “benefit from a summer move.”

Imagine him and Kane

Finding a new frontman is amongst Antonio Conte’s top two priorities in the transfer market, as revealed by the Evening Standard earlier this month.

That’s hardly a surprise considering the Italian head coach only has Harry Kane at his disposal and he’s been out of sorts this campaign, having found the net only five times in 18 league appearances.

But Conte may well want another striker for more than just cover, after all he won the Serie A with Inter Milan last season by utilising a two-man attack.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-transfer-gossip-rumours-conte-paratici-levy-premier-league” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Both Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku scored for fun at the San Siro, contributing towards a whopping 46% of their 89 goals scored on their way to the club’s first Scudetto in over a decade.

He could well look to recreate that perfect frontline with the addition of David to Spurs.

The Canada international has been in electric form this campaign, scoring 16 goals across 29 appearances in all competitions, which is one goal every 139 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

David also contributed towards glory as his goals last season helped steer Les Dogues to the Ligue 1 title over Mauricio Pochettino’s big-spending Paris Saint-Germain.

Once dubbed a “phenomenon” who is “the best player in the country” by his former Club Brugge boss Hein Vanhaezebrouck, the 5 foot 11 marksman is an absolute speedster who can attack the space with his rapid acceleration and close control on the ball.

We saw on Wednesday night that Kane still has his remarkable passing ability in his locker as he fed Steven Bergwijn through for a last-second winner at Leicester City, so just imagine seeing that every week but with an actual striker next to him in David.

Conte would surely be buzzing to sign the £45m-rated Lille star in 2022, so sporting director Fabio Paratici and co must look to get the deal done.

Tamim sizzles while Flower fumes

Plays of the day from Bangladesh v England, 2nd Test, Dhaka, 1st day

Andrew Miller in Dhaka20-Mar-2010

Tamim Iqbal launched the Bangladesh innings in style, punishing everything that came his way•Getty Images

Innings of the day
Tamim Iqbal’s onslaught was a cut above everything else that occurred on the first day. A cut, and a drive, and a mow through midwicket for that matter. He needed a touch of luck to get going as two of his first three fours were edges, but once he’d decided that today was his day, there was nothing that England could do to dissuade him. In particular, he treated England’s new world No. 2 bowler, Graeme Swann, with utter contempt, beasting him for three fours and a six from consecutive deliveries to hurtle along to a 34-ball fifty. And his innings was still purring at 74 not out from 48 when the mid-session drinks break arrived to disrupt his focus. Sadly for Bangladesh, he never quite regained the upper hand again.Punchbag of the day
Sometimes the ball just follows you around the field, and when you are a Test captain with an awful lot on your mind – as Alastair Cook was during Tamim’s fireworks – you tend to wish it would just go away. Instead, Cook was pursued as if by an angry hornet from the moment, in the ninth over, when he got both hands to Tamim’s regulation clip to mid-on, but flapped the chance to the turf. Three overs before lunch, Mahmudullah poked a catch through his hands at silly point, soon after the resumption, he wore a drive on the toe that, to judge by his agonised reaction, deserved to be given out as a rebound catch to Prior. Another chance burst through his hands before he could react, and another drive cracked him painfully on the calf. Still, only four more days in the firing line, then Andrew Strauss can take over once again.Debut of the day
James Tredwell was unlucky to miss out in the first Test, but this time England accepted that a second spinner was essential. And so it proved as he chimed in with two vital breakthroughs in a torrid first-day’s work. It was he who extracted Tamim for 85 – conceivably a touch unluckily as the ball looped off his forearm with no obvious deflection via bat – and he later returned to nail Shakib Al Hasan on the sweep, as the captain’s eagerness to reach his half-century lured him into a less-than-ideal stroke. Bowling with flight and patience, and extracting a hint of turn as well, he more than justified his inclusion in a 29-over effort.Debut of the day Mk 2
Jahurul Islam would not have been playing in this Test had it not been for Raqibul Hasan’s much-publicised fit of pique in the build-up to the Chittagong match, and though Jamie Siddons said that he would have welcomed Raqibul straight back into the team, the BCB’s chose instead to impose a three-month ban for the disruption his “retirement” had caused. So Jahurul was given his chance, after an impressive season which culminated in a century and a fifty for Rajshahi in the recent National League final. Alas, he wasn’t able to replicate that form. After seeing off five dot-balls from Tredwell, he was pushed back into his stumps by Swann, and pinned lbw for a duck.Bowling change of the day
England’s decision to play five bowlers was justified from the moment Tamim started laying into their collective resources. Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn bowled five overs between them out of the first 50 of the innings, having conceded 45 runs in their new-ball burst, but when Finn returned with tea in the offing, his height and pace paid instant dividends. Mahmudullah had played with great composure for his 59 from 106 balls, but he couldn’t help but skew a loose drive to Paul Collingwood at backward point from the very first delivery of the new spell.Coaching session of the day
Shortly after lunch, Collingwood underwent some running repairs on the dislocated finger that has been giving him problems ever since the Durban Test in December, and which he seemed to have aggravated while spilling a sharp slip catch in the opening exchanges of the match. However, the discussion that took place by the boundary’s edge – between the vice-captain, the physio, and an extremely animated England coach, Andy Flower – seemed to have far less to do with fingers, and far more to do with finger-pointing. It wasn’t quite like watching Fergie prowling in the technical area, but the overall impression was clear enough. England needed to sharpen up their act, and the suggestions from the dressing-room were soon relayed to young captain Cook.Recovery of the day
Swann was introduced to the attack with unseemly haste this morning, rushed in Red Adair-style as early as the eighth over after Tamim had left their best-laid plans in tatters. However, after five chastising overs, he had figures of 0 for 43, and was looking a bit singed for arguably the first time in a Test match since his nervy Ashes debut at Cardiff back in July. But slowly but surely he regained his poise – aided in no small part by Tamim’s departure – and by the end of the day he was back where he belongs at the top of England’s wickets tally. With figures of 30-4-94-3, you’d hardly have noticed the punishment he took early on.
