Aston Villa are interested in a deal to bring Borna Barisic to Villa Park in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that the Glasgow Rangers left-back is one of a number of players on Steven Gerrard’s shortlist of transfer targets ahead of the winter window.

The report goes on to state that, while the 41-year-old Aston Villa manager does not want to ruin his relationship with the Scottish Premiership side, he believes the defender has the ability to make the step up to Premier League football and could look to pursue a deal for the 29-year-old in January.

Purslow must move

Considering the poor form of Aston Villa’s current first-choice left-back, Matt Targett, so far this season, the position would indeed appear as if it could do with strengthening in the January transfer window.

Indeed, over Targett’s 10 Premier League appearances this term, the £15.3m-rated man has helped his side keep just one clean sheet, registered one assist and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, one tackle, 1.2 clearances and winning a mere 3.9 duels per game.

These returns have seen the 26-year-old average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.58, ranking him as Villa’s 10th-worst performer in the league.

In comparison, while the Scottish Premiership is undoubtedly a lower standard of football than the English top-flight, Barisic has nevertheless looked much more impressive than the £34k-per-week Villa defender.

Indeed, over his six league appearances, the £5.4m-rated Croatia international has helped his side keep one clean sheet, registered two assists and created one big chance for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 0.5 interceptions, 1.5 tackles, three clearances and winning 4.3 duels per fixture.

These metrics have seen the player who Gerrard himself dubbed an “outstanding” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 7.18, ranking the 29-year-old as Gers’ third-best player in the division.

As such, considering the stark contrast between the respective returns of each player, it would indeed seem highly advisable for Christian Purslow to sanction a swoop for the £18k-per-week Barisic in January, as he is most certainly a player Gerrard would love to once again have in his squad, as well as appearing to be an immediate upgrade on Targett.

Having been dropped from the Mumbai squad for the Buchi Babu tournament, Amol Muzumdar has decided to join Assam for the upcoming domestic season. “I have given a good thought before taking the decision,” Muzumdar told . “Believe me it was a tough decision. There are bound to be some ups and downs in a player’s career. My name was not there in the Buchi Babu squad. What’s the latest?

The Italian will be without three players after delivering a fresh update to reporters during his pre-game press conference over in Slovenia.

“[Dane] Scarlett in this moment is not available. During the international break he had a problem in his ankle and is not available. He’s injured in the same way like Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso,” he revealed (via football.london).

But to make matters worse, it appears the injury to the Atalanta loanee is a lot worse than first feared, handing the 52-year-old a crushing long-term blow.

On Romero’s absence, he then added: “We are waiting for another scan. I think his injury is a bit serious and we have to wait. It’s an injury that is more serious that Lo Celso and Scarlett.”

So not only will Conte be without Romero for the foreseeable future but he is also without two players that would’ve most likely earned some minutes on the pitch in an encounter like this one in young striker Dane Scarlett and attacking midfielder. Lo Celso.

Devastating setback

This update will surely leave the Spurs boss absolutely gutted, if not slightly annoyed and frustrated by the international break because three members of his first-team squad are now on the treatment table.

He’ll need to be a little wary with team selection as his side face a tough trip to Burnley on Sunday afternoon but with three players missing, that task isn’t going to be an easy one.

West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Julian Hunte has sought a meeting with Bharrat Jagdeo, the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) chairman and Guyana president, to set right the “misinformation” over the failed mediation talks between the board and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA).In a letter to the Guyana president, Hunte said the WICB had been wrongly blamed for the collapse in talks and that immediate measures were needed to correct the perception.”It is my sincere hope that you will agree that an early meeting between us may assist in correcting the erroneous impressions that have been conveyed in order to forestall any further adverse effect on the reputation of West Indies cricket,” Hunte wrote in his letter. “At the same time, I trust that you will appreciate the urgent need for us to set about some damage control measures with regard to the misinformation that is already in the public domain.”Jagdeo criticised the WICB last week over the failed mediation talks headed by former Commonwealth secretary-general Shridath Ramphal. Jagdeo, who brokered the mediation deal in Guyana in July, felt that when the WIPA agreed during their July 21 meeting to make all their players available for selection, the move would allow “normalcy” to return.Instead, Jagdeo alleged the board prejudiced the efforts to broker peace from the start by not disclosing they had already selected a Champions Trophy squad without the top-flight players. Ramphal also said one “party” had introduced a document late in the mediation process which had led to the stalling of talks.But Hunte hit back at the comments, claiming that Jagdeo had agreed during the July 21 meeting that while the striking players had made themselves available, “actual team selection was a matter for the selection committee”. Hunte, in fact, slammed WIPA president, Dinanath Ramnarine for having not taken the mediation process seriously, after absenting himself “to proceed on vacation with his family in Tobago.”Hunte also said Ramphal’s public comments and his final report to Jagdeo were factually incorrect. “I am advised that the articulation of the WICB’s position by Ramphal in his press statements and in his final report to you are factually incorrect and that there was never any adoption by the WICB during the mediation proceedings of an unwillingness to negotiate on the proposed Mediation Agreement which it submitted on the night of August 31, 2009,” Hunte wrote.The impasse, which developed ahead of the previous home series, against Bangladesh, led to the region’s leading players making themselves unavailable over pay and contractual disputes.
