Poor weather continued to dominate the early stages of the IPL as the match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals was washed out without a ball being bowled. The opening game of the Tuesday double-header between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab was decided on Duckworth-Lewis hardly ten overs into the chase and the spectators were denied any cricketing action since then. The rain was intermittent all evening and the umpires decided to call it off two and a half hours after the scheduled start. Both teams will now share a point.Incidentally, this is the second IPL game to be washed out without a ball being bowled. The first was at the Feroz Shah Kotla between the hosts Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata last May.

Aston Villa star Anwar El Ghazi tipped to leave

The Birmingham Mail’s Patrick Rowe has suggested that Aston Villa star Anwar El Ghazi could leave the club amid the competition for places at Villa Park.

What’s the story?

During a discussion for The Birmingham Mail about the winger’s future, Rowe said: “If he wanted regular football each week I can see him moving on as I’m not even sure we can offer that to the wingers ahead of him currently given the system we are playing.”

Time’s up for El Ghazi

Amid all the marquee signings Villa made during the summer, not cashing in on El Ghazi may be one of the only blotches in their copy-book from their transfer window work.

Reports had actually indicated that the Midlands club were hoping to receive around £17m for him, with Serie A side AS Roma very interested in taking him to Italy.

In the end, Villa chose not to let El Ghazi go, and having also signed the likes of Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia who predominantly play out wide, the Dutchman now faces far more competition for places at Villa Park.

If they had recouped some of that outlay from selling El Ghazi, Villa could potentially have reinvested the money into a more pressing need, like central midfield.

The fact he’s played just the three times in the Premier League this season, and all three of those appearances being at the start of the campaign, has been an indication of how far he’s fallen down the pecking order at Villa Park.

He’s remained an unused substitute for the last five top-flight games, even with the injuries to both Bailey and Bertrand Traore, and it appears Smith has made his mind up on him.

While he may be seen as a “cracking servant” by Ashley Preece, the Dutchman’s time just looks to be up at Villa Park, with the club moving on to bigger and better things with the likes of Bailey.

It’s exactly why moving him on might just please the Villa fans.

Meanwhile, Villa are interested in signing this Scottish ace…

O Guarani começou o jogo pressionando o Internacional.

Sloppy Pakistan face litmus test

Pakistan and Netherlands are taking on each other in a group game in which Pakistan might do and still die

Who’d have thunk it, that Pakistan and Netherlands would be taking on each other in a group game in which Pakistan might do and still die? Such has been the way with this strangest of groups but clarity has now emerged. Netherlands, to progress and thus consign Pakistan to a fate they seem worryingly resigned to, can afford to lose, but by no more than 24 runs. If Pakistan chase, then they must do so with roughly three overs to spare. The problems are Pakistan’s. Not for a moment since they landed in England have they looked like a team that is playing in a World Cup. Younis Khan’s bizarre, careless dismissal of the format and the tournament seems to have filtered through to the side. Anyway you’d think, given their lack of international games recently, that Pakistan would be itching to rip through a Ramadan 20/20 night tournament in Karachi’s Pakistan Chowk, let alone a World Cup. The attitude is, however, only the most overarching concern: on the field, they are the worst fielding side, have an unsettled batting order and are rusty with the ball. Beyond that, they’re fine.Netherlands, on the other hand, have accorded this tournament the respect it deserves and have shown, with that fabulous opening win, just why the format is celebrated. As well as skill, the Netherlands will remind one and all, Twenty20 rewards discipline, hard work and bravery. The problem for them, of course, is to recreate the intensity of Friday, something which often proves beyond associate nations and lower-ranked sides.Form guide(last five matches, most recent first)
Pakistan LWLWWNetherlands WN/RWLWWatch out for
Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul have looked the only players up for a battle so far and on their eight overs, will rest most of Pakistan’s Super Eights aspirations. Netherlands will not have much experience of Ajmal’s doosra and Gul’s arrow-straight, pacy yorkers are a handful for most.Pakistan have a long history of bouncer-induced trauma adding Sunday’s defeat to England to the list. If there is bounce still Lord’s, you can be sure Dirk Nannes will be utilising it. He has the pace and natural angle to trouble them, but that he makes such a good story – Japanese-speaking, saxophone playing wanderer who took to the game late – means that he is a headline (not a good one for Pakistan) in waiting.Team news
Pakistan will make changes, most likely dropping Salman Butt and possibly pushing Kamran Akmal in his place. Sohail Tanvir may also get in, his unusual angles and action, worth confusing the Netherlands with.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Shoaib Malik, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq, 5 Younis Khan (capt), 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Yasir Arafat, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Mohammad Aamer, 11 Saeed Ajmal.Given that the win against England was their biggest one yet, there are unlikely to be any changes from that starting XI.Netherlands: (probable) 1 Alexei Kervezee, 2 Darron Reekers, 3 Ba Zuiderent, 4 Tom de Grooth, 5 Peter Borren, 6 Ryan ten Doeschate, 7 Daan van Bunge, 8 Edgar Schiferli, 9 Jeroen Smits (capt/wk), 10 Pieter Seelaar, 11 Dirk Nannes.Pitch and conditions
Unfortunately for Pakistan, rain is forecast, but the Lord’s pitch has offered both runs and movement off the seam.Stats and trivia

“It would be sad if we don’t make it, but I have never attached too much importance to Twenty20 cricket, as it is fun cricket. I mean it is more for entertainment, even if it is international cricket. It is all for the crowd.”
“Cricket is no longer so boring.”

Man United fans flock to ten Hag news

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester United fans have absolutely erupted over a managerial update involving their club and Dutch title-winner Erik ten Hag.

After the Red Devils succumbed to a humiliating loss against Liverpool at the weekend, conceding five without reply to their arch rivals at Old Trafford, it’s safe to say Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s position has been under scrutiny.

The United legend has been at the centre of reports hinting he could be grasping on to his tenure by a thread as his side lay seventh in the Premier League table and eight points behind leaders Chelsea.

Given the amount of star power in their squad, not to mention summer investment, it is little surprise Solskjaer is under pressure and there have already been murmurs of who could replace the Norwegian if he is given his marching orders.

The Daily Mail claim that one man United are considering to potentially replace the 48-year-old is Ajax manager ten Hag – with journalist Sami Mokbel writing that he is ‘touted as a potential replacement’ for Solskjaer amid his links to Newcastle.

Flocking to this update, which one supporter called a ‘dream’, it’s safe to say many other Red Devils want to see ten Hag replace their current under-fire boss.

Aston Villa: Alan Hutton reacts to Dean Smith claim

Pundit and former Aston Villa man Alan Hutton has been having his say on Dean Smith and his future at Villa Park, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Source reveal

A report from Football Insider last Friday, who were informed by a Villa source, suggested that Smith would be under ‘huge’ pressure if they lost to Arsenal.

As we know, Villa left the Emirates with nothing following a 3-1 defeat, with the report claiming Smith will be fighting for his job if they don’t climb the table.

Former right-back Hutton has now been having his say on Smith’s back three system and why it has deteriorated in recent weeks.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Hutton, who regularly features for the BBC, was talking to Football Insider about Smith:

“He obviously changed the shape. They went to three at the back and it did work, it looked good.

“All the players were getting on the front foot. They were intense in everything they were doing, they were closing down, doing the hard yards making it difficult for teams.

“They have fallen away from that a little bit. Against Arsenal, they were far too easy to play against. They were open, they weren’t closing down as a team, they weren’t harrying people.

“That’s maybe where they’re at the moment. The expectations have been that high that they’ve gone backwards from what made them a good team. It was the industry, the working hard, getting about people.

“That’s what the foundation was built off of. They need to get back to basics, for me. I know Dean Smith changed the formation at halftime and it was better but they were way off it at the Emirates.”

The Verdict: Positive results needed

This isn’t the first time Football Insider have claimed Smith is fighting for his job.

A report back in September said the same thing and Villa then went on to beat Everton and Manchester United without conceding a goal.

Villa take on West Ham and Southampton prior to the next international break, and positive results would more than likely put those rumours to bed for the time being once again.

What could have been a potential quarter-final clash will be of less importance now that Punjab’s defeat against Chennai has made things easier for the other Southern Indian teams

What could have been a potential quarter-final clash will perhaps be of less importance now that Kings XI Punjab’s defeat against Chennai Super Kings has made things easier for the other Southern Indian teams. Bangalore and Deccan both have a better run-rate than Punjab and should join last year’s semi-finalists Delhi and Chennai in the knock-out phase unless one of them loses badly today. The turnaround for the bottom-placed teams from last season has been remarkable. Today’s game provides the sides an opportunity to lock in their playing XI ahead of the semi-finals. While the foreign players in the Bangalore squad have been crucial to the team’s successes, it is the Indian contingent, barring Anil Kumble, that needs to stand up and be counted. Praveen Kumar’s performance during the win in the last match against Delhi Daredevils is just the inspiration that the domestic players need. Two successive last-ball finishes may have fatigued Deccan but expect no sympathy as they face their southern compatriots. Adam Gilchrist, who like Kumble, has handled the captaincy with aplomb, will not want to let the slightest chance go abegging. Deccan will look to avoid meeting top-of-the-table Delhi in the semis, having lost on both occasions this season.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Bangalore Royal Challengers: WWWLL
The opening partnership continues to haunt coach Ray Jennings. With Jesse Ryder not having made the most of his opportunities and Robin Uthappa proving a failure at the top, time and options may well be running out for Bangalore if they are to keep their three-match winning streak going.Deccan Chargers: LWLWL
Expect Adam Gilchrist to be back in top gear after a minor blip and along with fellow-Australian Andrew Symonds, provide stability to the side. Rohit Sharma will look to continue his good form, and pile on the runs after flawless cameos against Kolkata and Punjab.Watch out forAnil Kumble v Rohit Sharma/Adam Gilchrist: The wily Kumble has been shouldering most of the bowling for Bangalore and will no doubt look forward to matching his craft and guile against two of the most destructive batsmen in the IPL. Gilchrist gave in to temptation last time and was undone by Ramesh Powar; he will need to be on his guard if Deccan are to get off to a flier this time.Team newsExpect a new opening combination as Bangalore look to iron out the glitches ahead of the knockout phase, with the in-form Ross Taylor likely to assist Kallis, and Uthappa featuring lower down. Vinay Kumar may be back, replacing Manish Pandey, as they look to add more bite to their bowling.Royal Challengers Bangalore: (probable) 1 Ross Taylor, 2 Jacques Kallis, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Robin Uthappa, 5 Virat Kohli, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Roelof van der Merwe, 8 B Akhil, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 R Vinay Kumar, 11 Anil Kumble (capt).Deccan would want to give their best XI a dummy run before the next few matches. Dwayne Smith may again be rested with Gibbs given another chance for a long overdue big score. Picking Chaminda Vaas ahead of Ryan Harris may give them the extra batting option. Harmeet Singh may take Jaskaran Singh’s place from the last match.Deccan: (probable) 1 Adam Gilchrist (capt & wk), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 T Suman, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Andrew Symonds, 6 Venugopal Rao, 7 D Ravi Teja, 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 RP Singh, 10 Pragyan Ojha, 11 Jaskaran Singh/Harmeet Singh.Stats and triviaWith 24 sixes, Gilchrist has cleared the boundary the most times this IPLNot a statistic to be proud of: Bangalore jointly hold the record for the heaviest defeat (in terms of runs) with Kolkata – the 92-run defeat came against Chennai in Port ElizabethRP Singh, the holder of the purple cap with 19 wickets, has the chance to break free of his nearest competitor, Delhi’s Ashish Nehra (18)Head-to-head recordGilchrist and Rohit’s power-hitting ensured Deccan romped to a 24-run win earlier this season, in Cape Town.
