Sri Lanka’s batting woes
The captain Mahela Jayawardene has been struggling to find runs and the lower middle order has not allowed him any breathing space. For much of the series, their top order chased big targets in the knowledge that if they failed, the team would collapse – leading to the inevitable. Thilina Kandamby had one good day, Chamara Kapugedera had none. By his own admission Kandamby is yet to feel that he belongs in international arena – “I will when I score more runs” – and Kapugedera hasn’t proved to the world that he belongs.However, Sri Lanka have persisted with him – the management and even a host of former players, whom you would expect to be hard-nosed critics, believe he will come good one day. Sri Lanka’s short-term future is a question of if and buts; by investing faith, they are trying to secure a long-term future.Till then, though, Sri Lanka continue to be dependent on the old pros. One significant change has already taken place, of course – Jayawardene has resigned as the captain and Sri Lanka will hope the transition yields Jayawardene the batsmen. Fitness issues
Their recent gruelling schedule hasn’t helped Sri Lanka, who looked jaded through the series. Jayawardene and Muralitharan have publicly acknowledged they were a tired unit and their fielding standards have suffered. Ajantha Mendis might have perhaps been rushed back too early from his ankle injury. The Indians played him well, treating him as a medium-pacer and taking care not to play across the line, but Mendis lacked the zip and menace of thelast series.India’s batting strength
Sri Lanka took on India on the back of good performances from their seamers in Pakistan. But the Indian batsmen completely overwhelmed them in this series. Among the seamers, ZaheerKhan is the only one who is certain to bowl with the new ball. Ishant Sharma might share depending on who is the third seamer. If it’s Praveen Kumar, Ishant will come in first-change so Praveen can exploit his swing with the new ball and if it’s Munaf Patel, Ishant might start.Enough has been written about bowling in the Powerplays.The same thought percolates in the batting as well. Dhoni promoted himself to No. 3 in the fourth game and pushed Raina at that spot in the last match. “If a person is batting at the No. 3 all the time, he doesn’t know what a No. 5 to 7 player goes through,” said Dhoni. “He has to know how tough it is come in and immediately start scoring. When he bats at that position himself, he will know how vital it is to carry on batting and finish the game once you are set.” And vice versa. Awareness of what the other individual goes through increases your own responsibility.India showed that they are a team that is increasingly aware of its own strength but Sri Lanka were let down by men who are not sure of themselves. Jayawardene wore a hunted look at the press conferences, with the local press – even a national selector – training their guns on him. Kumar Sangakkara’s succession to the job, if it happens, will be a smooth transition and possibly the beginning of good times.India, meanwhile, are at that critical point where successful teams goon to build a collective aura. Time will tell whether they march on or fall away due to faulty thinking and overconfidence. The no 1 spot beckons and it appears Dhoni’s boys are listening.

Sunderland will be looking to maintain their place at the top of the League One table as they travel to face Portsmouth on Saturday.

Lee Johnson may look to freshen his XI up to take on Portsmouth and one player he must unleash today is German winger Leon Dajaku.

The summer signing from Union Berlin is yet to make a start for Sunderland in League One and this match could be a great opportunity for him to be thrown in. Johnson must give him the chance to show what he can do from the start by dropping Aiden O’Brien and starting Dajaku out wide against Pompey.

Earlier this summer, the manager lauded the 20-year-old’s potential and outlined the qualities he has in his locker.

He said: “Leon is a really interesting player – he’s a top prospect with good ability, agility and quality – so we are looking forward to adding him to the squad and working with him. He’s a hungry player that has shown a strong attitude and desire to come to Sunderland and grow with us, which is exactly what we want.”

Dajaku displayed some of his quality off the bench in the rout against Cheltenham. As per SofaScore, in 29 minutes on the pitch, he scored one goal, created one chance and had 23 touches of the ball. O’Brien, on the other hand, played 90 minutes and failed to register a goal or assist, with one key pass and 50 touches.

The former Bayern Munich man has previously proven his ability at a similar level. In the third tier of German football, Dajaku managed seven goals and five assists in 43 games. This shows that he has the potential to be a game-changer for Johnson’s side, with his strike against Cheltenham giving a glimpse into what he is capable of producing.

Therefore, Johnson should axe O’Brien from the XI in order to start Dajaku out wide against Pompey. The German could add a goal threat from out wide whilst also being able to create chances, and there would be the added motivation to perform as it would be his full League One debut.

The dynamo could then secure his place in the team on a regular basis if he is able to put in an impressive display and then maintain consistency throughout the rest of the season.

O São Paulo encerrou nesta noite a sua complicada volta de Chapecó (SC), mas não fez todo o trajeto de ônibus. Por volta das 19h30 desta segunda-feira, a diretoria encontrou espaço em um voo saindo de Curitiba (PR) e retornou de forma mais confortável, dentro de um avião.

A mudança no transporte ocorreu porque dirigentes foram buscando alternativas enquanto o ônibus levava a equipe de ​Chapecó a Curitiba, um trajeto de cerca de 480 km. Quando acharam vaga em um voo que partiria da capital paranaense para São Paulo, optou-se por fazer o resto da viagem, de 420 km, de avião.

A delegação desembarcou do avião por volta das 21h e a mudança de planos, alterando o meio de transporte de quase metade da viagem, tem como objetivo diminuir o desgaste do elenco, que passaria cerca de 12h no ônibus. O elenco volta a treinar às 15h30 desta terça-feira, na única atividade antes do jogo de quarta-feira, contra o Vasco, no Morumbi.

A passagem do São Paulo por Chapecó não deixará saudades nos tricolores. No domingo, a equipe foi derrotada por 2 a 0 para a Chapecoense e, para completar, não conseguiu retornar do local logo após o confronto. O aeroporto de Chapecó foi fechado por questões climáticas e a aeronave que buscaria os são-paulinos não recebeu autorização para pousar.

The Verdict: Chiesa would be a sensational signing

Chiesa seems to be an exceptional prospect and he could be a perfect signing for Liverpool at a time when fresh blood is required in the attacking areas of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Guilherme Arana e Rodriguinho, que cumpriram suspensão no empate em 2 a 2 do último sábado, contra o Atlético-PR, serão as novidades do Corinthians para a partida de quarta-feira, às 21h, contra o Avaí, pela 15ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro. Nesta segunda, quando o elenco se reapresentou após um dia de folga, a dupla titular trabalhou entre os reservas e um deles ainda participou de um dos lances mais importantes e plásticos do treinamento: um rolinho de Mantuan para cima de Arana, sucedido por um chute forte no ângulo de Cássio. Golaço.

Enquanto os titulares do jogo de sábado realizaram atividades regenerativas na academia do CT, exceção feita ao goleiro Cássio, os reservas trabalharam em campo. Primeiro, um treino técnico em espaço reduzido com seis pequenas traves, sendo duas posicionados no meio-campo. A ideia era que a bola passasse entre as traves do meio, para proporcionar aproximação e mais triangulações. Depois deste treinamento, os reservas foram divididos em dois times para um treino técnico, e foi aí que Mantuan aplicou o drible em Arana.
