Moore could finally unlock Berahino

In perhaps one of the stranger moves of transfer deadline day, Sheffield Wednesday secured the signing of Saido Berahino, with the 28-year-old linking up with Darren Moore’s side on a 12-month deal.

Following largely unsuccessful spells at Stoke City, SV Zulte Waregem and RSC Charleroi, English football fans would perhaps have been forgiven for forgetting that the centre-forward existed, however, the Burundi international’s move to Hillsborough could well be the transfer which finally gets his career back on track.

Moore could be Berahino’s key

The Sheffield Wednesday manager and Berahino have actually worked together before, with the 47-year-old having been the West Bromwich Albion club captain when the striker joined the club’s academy as an 11-year-old.

Berahino himself also revealed that Moore played a key role in his development as a player while part of the Baggies youth setup, something which could explain why the Owls boss decided to take a chance on the 28-year-old this summer, as he is more aware than most of the raw ability the forward possesses.

While his talent may have not been on display all that much in recent seasons, it is undeniable that an on-form Berahino is a centre-forward who knows how to find the back of the net, something the £1.35m-rated man demonstrated while playing for West Brom.

Indeed, over his 32 Premier League appearances back in 2013/14, the young striker bagged five goals and registered two assists, as well as scoring a further four goals over two EFL Cup fixtures.

However, it was the following season in which Berahino really burst onto the scene, scoring a rather astonishing 14 goals and providing one assist over his 38 Premier League appearances in 2014/15, in addition to five goals and five assists over four FA Cup matches and one goal in three EFL Cup games – taking his total to 20 goals and six assists for the season.

As such, while it will not be an easy task, if Moore can be the manager to finally help the player Liam Ridgewell once dubbed a “huge” talent refind this form – something which, considering their history, Moore is better placed than anyone else to achieve – the 28-year-old could well prove to be one of the signings of the season, as a fit and firing Berahino easily has the ability to catapult Wednesday to promotion.

Cash-strapped Zimbabwe cancels competition

Questions over Zimbabwe Cricket’s accounts are likely to resurface after it reportedly cancelled this season’s national league because of cash shortages

Steven Price in Harare27-Nov-2008Questions over Zimbabwe Cricket’s accounts are likely to resurface after it reportedly cancelled this season’s national league because of cash shortages. The league, the premier non first-class competition, was due to start earlier this month but was officially postponed at the last minute. Few hold out much hope that it can now take place.Cricinfo has learned that matters came to a head when hoteliers in small cities where some games were scheduled refused to accept cheques from ZC in payment. The ongoing five-ODI series against Sri Lanka was supposed to be split between Harare and Bulawayo but is now being played on in Harare, again because ZC claimed the costs of playing in two centres were prohibitive.Although Zimbabwe’s economy is in utter disarray – the latest inflation rate is 231,000,000% – the board is protected from the worst of it as it receives all payments from the ICC in US dollars. There have been concerns regarding the ZC finances for several years, and in 2007 Malcolm Speed, at the time the ICC chief executive, said that its accounts could not be relied on and they had been “deliberately falsified to mask various illegal transactions from the auditors and the government of Zimbabwe”. Although a subsequent forensic audit by the ICC cleared officials of any wrongdoing, the ICC refused to make its finding public, fuelling speculation that all was not as straightforward as it was portrayed.Less than 18 months ago ZC received around US$11 million from the ICC following the 2007 World Cup. Given it runs only limited domestic competitions and has little international cricket to support, it appears remarkable if, as appears the case, it has run out of money.Cricinfo was unable to obtain a statement from Zimbabwe Cricket as the board will not respond to any media queries put to it by us

Wolves: Vinagre endures horror show in Europe

Wolves are a team that struggles for depth. Despite the large amount of money they spent last season and the call for better planning before his departure by Nuno Santo, the Old Gold still lack bodies.

However, there is a particular area where they’re stacked for options; full-back.

Last summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers signed four of them with Nelson Semedo and Ki-Jana Hoever arriving to play on the right and Marcal and Rayan Ait-Nouri signing to play on the left.

They added to the likes of Jonny and Ruben Vinagre but the Wolves pair have both been out of the side for very different reasons lately.

The former has sustained two ACL injuries in the space of the year while Vinagre, despite possessing enormous potential, was shipped out on loan.

His career at Wolves appears to be petering out rather quickly with 20-year-old attacking wing-back Ait-Nouri signing permanently and taking up his role of back-up in the team.

Yet, Vinagre is still playing for a prestigious club, one that won the Portuguese league last term in Sporting Lisbon.

That being said, his performances haven’t been entirely up to par and nothing summed that up more than his display against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

To put things lightly, the defender had a nightmare as Sebastien Haller scored four times in a 5-1 drubbing.

Yes, your read that right, former West Ham striker Haller was actually in the goals,

However, it wasn’t the big French striker who provided him with problems. Instead, it was Ajax’s tricky Brazilian winger Antony.

Vinagre was entrusted with playing at left wing-back but was consistently beaten by the winger and caught out of position.

For the Dutch side’s first goal of the game, Vinagre was caught up field which allowed Antony space to cut inside from the right and hit the post before the rebound was fired in by Haller.

As the second goal came about, the Wolves loanee’s positioning was abysmal. Antony again caught him out and darted in behind the defender to latch onto a ball and then play a simple ball across the box that was finished off nicely.

It got worse for the 22-year-old when Ajax found a third. He dived in on the aforementioned Ajax winger but didn’t win the ball. Antony was subsequently allowed to pass the ball into Ryan Gravenberch who then found Steven Berghuis to make it three.

From a statistics point of view, the numbers make for grim reading too. He was substituted at half time after making just 13 passes at a success rate of 72%.

Furthermore, he lost possession of the ball every 3.4 touches. With this kind of performance in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that he’s been loaned out by Wolves in successive campaigns.

This was a horror show from the young defender and one that is unlikely to please the new Old Gold boss, Bruno Lage. They’d be wise to get rid on a permanent basis when the chance allows.

Preview of the 1st Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Mirpur

Match facts December 26-31, 2008
Start time 09.30am (03.30 GMT)Big Picture”We are going to Bangladesh with an open mind.” With these words, Mahela Jayawardene signalled that his team would guard against any sort of complacency when facing the weakest Test nation, and with good reason. Leading teams usually expect a cakewalk each time they set foot in Bangladesh but, only a couple of months ago, New Zealand were made to scrap for every run and wicket against a Bangladesh side reeling from the desertions to the ICL. Their slow bowlers thrived on pitches suited to them and the trend is likely to continue against Sri Lanka as well. The pace of cricket against New Zealand was far from attractive – Bangladesh scored barely above one run an over in the opening session of the first Test – but, for a change, the home side – especially the lower order – showed a willingness to occupy the crease and could stretch the match till the fifth day, when they went down fighting. They havelost seven of eight Tests this year (and drawn one) but have the chance to end on a positive note.Sri Lanka last played a Test in August and, with next month’s tour of Pakistan not yet confirmed and no Tests scheduled for another seven months, they will welcome the opportunity for five-day cricket. Though they are coming off an unconvincing tour of Zimbabwe, the players have been busy enough in the domestic season to satisfy Jayawardene. The top order failed to impress in the tour game in Savar and they will be challenged further in the Tests, especially against the spinners. They will be without Ajantha Mendis – who twisted his ankle – for the first Test at least but Bangladesh will still have to contend with Muttiah Muralitharan. The first Test in Mirpur sees the return of the rest day, with no play possible on December 29 because of the parliamentary elections. With an overdose of spin expected, there will be plenty of enquiries and the umpires will be under immense pressure to get their decisions spot on, with no referrals system to lean on.Form guide (last five Tests, most recent first)Sri Lanka WLWLW
Bangladesh LLDLLWatch out forShakib Al Hasan
In the absence of Abdur Razzak, Shakib will shoulder the bulk of the bowling with Enamul Haque jnr. Shakib’s in the form of his life, picking up 21 wickets in the last four Tests and recording the best innings figures by a Bangladesh bowler in Tests (7 for 36). He averages 24.33 with the bat in seven Tests this year and is in the team as a genuine allrounder.Rangana Herath
Mendis may not be around for the Tests but Herath, his replacement, is already proving to be quite a handful. His 6 for 16 bundled out a hapless Bangladesh Cricket Board XI for 88 in the practice game at Savar. His appearances for Sri Lanka have been very sporadic but he now has another chance to make a mark.Team newsSri Lanka are still waiting on the fitness of Kumar Sangakkara, who sustained a cut in his right foot after arriving in Dhaka. He missed the warm-up game in Savar but Prasanna Jayawardene, the regular Test wicketkeeper, found form with 70. If Sangakkara misses out, Chamara Kapugedera could get a promotion.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Michael Vandort, 2 Malinda Warnapura, 3 Kumar Sangakkara/Chamara Kapugedera, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Tillakaratne Dishan, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Dammika Prasad, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Muttiah MuraliatharanBangladesh made two changes to the squad that toured South Africa, recalling batsman Rajin Saleh, who should give them the grit they need, and Enamul Haque jnr. Haque makes a comeback to the Test squad after the tour of New Zealand this January, following the recent ban on Razzak for chucking. Haque comes off a stint with Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy in India, picking up seven wickets in four games. “The level of cricket I have played in India recently will really help me because it is almost of international standard,” Haque was quoted as saying in the . “Preparing for those matches made me mentally strong and I believe I can now handle pressure better.”Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Junaid Siddique / Raqibul Hasan, 3 Imrul Kayes / Rajin Saleh, 4 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 5 Mehrab Hossain jnr, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk) ,8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Enamul Haque jnr, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11, Mahbubul AlamPitch and conditionsRain washed out three days of the Test against New Zealand in October but the forecast for the next five days is far more encouraging. A slow turner is expected.Stats and TriviaBefore Shakib’s bounty of 21 wickets in the last four Tests, he had just three wickets from six games. Both teams are facing each other for the first time at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. Spinners have taken 28 of the 73 wickets taken at this venue.Quotes”I have bowled well against New Zealand and South Africa but Sri Lanka are a different proposition. I was a part-timer when I faced them last time.”
“Their bowling is really frightening. Most of the teams have either a good pace attack or a good spin attack, but Sri Lanka are good in both departments.”
“We bowled very well and our middle order also batted well, though the top order disappointed me.”

High-flying India wary of complacency

Cricinfo previews the third ODI between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo

Sri Lanka need Tillakaratne Dilshan to fire at the top of the order © AFP
The Big PictureIndia took 23 years to secure their first bilateral one-day series win in Sri Lanka, finally accomplishing the feat last August. Less than six months on, the Indian juggernaut stands on the brink of a reprise. Besides clinching the series, a victory at the Premadasa on Tuesday will also equal India’s longest winning sequence in one-dayers – eight. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has already warned against complacency, and also said that though India negotiated the threat of Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan well in the first two games, the pair posed a formidable challenge.Apart from overcoming a slick Indian outfit, Sri Lanka will have to beat history: in 84 five-match series, only twice has a side come back from 2-0 down (South Africa against Pakistan in 2003, and Bangladesh over Zimbabwe in 2005). They will be buoyed by the return to form of Mahela Jayawardene, who ended a lean patch with a battling half-century. The other factors in their favour are that the bowlers are doing an adequate job, and Thilina Kandamby is proving to be a reassuring presence in the middle order. If the move to push Tillakaratne Dilshan up the order pays off as it did in the recent Pakistan series, Sri Lanka will still fancy their chances.ODI form guide (most recent first)Sri Lanka LLWWL
India WWWWWWatch out for …After a stop-start career, Suresh Raina is making the most of his second coming. He has managed to keep his place in the middle order despite a clutch of talented youngsters pushing for a place. Besides his batting, he has been an electric presence in the field, and also chipped in with a few tidy overs of offspin. One of the bright spots for Sri Lanka has been the form of Thilina Kandamby, who was recalled after a four-year gap. He has propped up their fragile middle order, and nearly engineered a victory in Saturday’s match with an unflustered 93.TeamsA groin injury has forced Munaf Patel out of the series, and L Balaji has been called in as a replacement. However, it is unlikely he’ll play, as India did well to contain the Sri Lankan batsmen in the second ODI with four frontline bowlers and the combination of Yusuf Pathan, Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina, who bowled 14 overs among them.India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Zaheer Khan, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Pragyan Ojha, 11 Ishant Sharma.Thilan Thushara has had two disappointing games, conceding 103 runs in 16 overs for one wicket. However, he played a critical role in bowling out Pakistan in the series decider in Lahore. Though he is under scrutiny, he is likely to retain his place.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Farveez Maharoof, 8 Thilan Thushara, 9 Muttiah Muralitharan, 10 Nuwan Kulasekara, 11 Ajantha Mendis.Stats & TriviaChamara Kapugedera hasn’t made a half-century in his previous 18 innings. The opening partnership has failed to deliver for Sri Lanka. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya averaged 63.33 for the first wicket in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan, but have managed just 15 runs for the opening stand in this series. Dhoni has won seven of his last eight tosses in one-dayers against Sri Lanka.Pitch and conditionsThe third ODI will be played on a different track, but it is expected to behave in a similar manner to the one used in the last match. A score of 260 should be reachable, but fast bowlers may get some assistance for the first few overs under lights.Quotes”We have to be a bit more consistent with our all-round game. That’s one area we have to focus on, especially when you are playing against a good team. You can’t keep making mistakes.”

“We know we have a lot of work to do but the momentum is with us at the moment. We just have to focus on what we have been doing and give us the best chance of winning the next match.”
