Rosser: Moyes pulled plug on West Ham’s pursuit of Milenkovic

West Ham manager David Moyes pulled the plug on the club’s pursuit of Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic, reporter Jack Rosser has told Football FanCast.

Milenkovic became a target for West Ham after the east London outfit initially faced difficulties in trying to sign Kurt Zouma from Chelsea.

However, after agreeing a £29.8m fee with their London rivals, West Ham eventually managed to land Zouma on a four-year deal.

And Rosser has revealed that the Hammers turned back to the Frenchman after also encountering problems in their attempts to sign Milenkovic, who has since signed a new contract at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.

“When it comes to transfers, the money’s there. The board have given him [Moyes] the money,” the Evening Standard journalist said. “They’ve also given him the final say, so by the sounds of it, Milenkovic was an option they went to after Zouma.

“They tried with Zouma but it didn’t come off initially, went to Milenkovic and that sort of stalled and dallied a bit, had some problems with agents and Moyes then sort of had a change of heart. He decided to pull the plug and focus everything back on Zouma, which paid off.”

As he discussed Zouma in his pre-match press confrence ahead of West Ham’s recent 2-2- draw with Crystal Palace, Moyes stressed the need to add a fourth centre-back to the squad, so he will undoubtedly be delighted with the addition of the France international.

The Hammers’ new signing arrives with plenty of top-flight experience and an impressive honours list having won both the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Vasco anuncia contratação do zagueiro Lucas Rocha

A dupla, inclusive, já é a titular do time.

Former players call for rule change

The abrupt end to the third ODI between India and England in Kanpur due to fading light has sparked off a debate over the rules and their application

Cricinfo staff20-Nov-2008Bad-light ruleIn a similar scenario, England benefited last June in a Natwest Series ODI against New Zealand. The match was six balls away from a result when heavy rain forced the umpires to stop play, leaving New Zealand at 127 for 2 in 19 overs, chasing 160 in 23. New Zealand were an over away from a D/L result in their favour. Subsequently, ICC rules were amended to allow reducing the innings break to a minimum of 10 minutes to try and ensure a result in case over 60 minutes of play was lost. The ICC regulation 15.1 was amended to read: “Where the innings of the side batting first is delayed or interrupted, the umpires will reduce the length of the interval. In the event of time being lost (playing time lost less any extra time provided) up to and including 60 minutes in aggregate, the length of the interval shall be reduced from 45 to 30 minutes. In the event of more than 60 minutes being lost in aggregate, the duration of the interval shall be agreed mutually by the umpires and both captains subject to no interval being of more than 30 minutes’ duration or less than 10 minutes’ duration. In the event of disagreement, the length of the interval shall be determined by the ICC match referee.” The abrupt end to the third ODI between India and England in Kanpur due to fading light has sparked off a debate over the rules and their application. While players involved on Thursday called it “bizarre” and “disappointing”, former cricketers pulled no punches, calling for the ICC to step in and ensure that lights at grounds are used to prevent “an absolute farce”.Graham Thorpe, the former England batsman, suggested the match referee (Roshan Mahanama, in this case) should take a firmer call and “act almost as the chief executive of the game.”The match began 45 minutes late, due to fog, and was reduced to 49 overs-a-side affair though the lunch break was not curtailed. With conditions deteriorating at the Green Park Stadium, the umpires, Russell Tiffin and Amiesh Saheba, offered India the light. It was immediately accepted and the D/L method was applied to declare India, batting at 198 for 5 in 40 overs, the winners by 16 runs. England had scored 240 in 48.4 overs. After the match, the captains, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kevin Pietersen, said they knew the D/L method would come into play when fog delayed the start. Pietersen said he had requested the match officials to reduce the lunch interval but was told the ICC rules don’t allow that.Andrew Flintoff, the England allrounder, said it was “a bizarre scenario” in the end because he felt England were two wickets away from “pulling something off”. “As you can imagine in the dressing room, the lads are down,” Flintoff said. “If we had got two quick wickets, we would have been right back in and could have pulled something off. It wasn’t to be. As you can imagine, we are a bit disappointed.”Pietersen said the team has tried to get it sorted. “[We] tried to chat with the umpires and stuff but, according to ICC ruling, the break has to be half an hour. It cannot be less than half an hour. We wanted to change the half-hour break. At the 9.15am toss, we wanted to start as early as possible because we knew we are not getting a full game in.”However, an ICC spokesperson said the rules did not apply here as only 45 minutes of play were lost – a minimum of 60 minutes have to be lost for the break to be reduced. The stadium lights – they are not cricket-specific floodlights – were switched on only after the match was called off to facilitate the presentation ceremony. The playing conditions for the series, endorsed by both captains before it began, is believed to include a decision to not use lights in day matches.Ravi Shastri, the former India captain, and David Lloyd, the former England coach – both present at the game as commentators – said the decision to use lights should be taken away from the rival captains.Javagal Srinath, who was debating the issue with Shastri, Thorpe and Lloyd on NEO Cricket, the official broadcaster, said it was up to the home board (the BCCI, in this case) to offer the option of lights before the series and certify they are fit and available.”ICC should step in and decide,” Shastri said. “Why should the two captains meet [on this issue]? They [ICC] should put it in their constitution once and for all that whether you are playing in Australia or Zimbabwe or in England or in India, if the ground has lights, use it, for Christ’s sake. Otherwise, it’s an absolute farce. Thirty thousand people watching the contest, and you don’t have play for 45 minutes because there is fog, which is ridiculous. Take it away from the players and it will make a huge difference.”Lloyd said it was clear the match should have started earlier than it did. “They could have started 40 minutes earlier,” Lloyd said. “Take the lights completely away from the captains, and make it a regulation. If and when you have to use the lights, put them on, even if it is a day game, to ensure that there is a decent game of cricket.”But Srinath, who is a member of ICC’s panel of match referees, said the suggestion that the lunch interval be reduced to accommodate more overs was not feasible as they players needed time to recuperate. “If you have play close to 50 overs [in the first innings], a break of 30 minutes is mandatory because players have to go back to the dressing room and recuperate,” he said. “The 30 minutes to reorganise themselves is a must. In case, if the game is curtailed further, to 20-25 overs, both captains are involved along with the match referee to decide whether a minimum of 10 minutes needs to be cut from the break.”

Spurs eye dream Romero partner in 2022

Tottenham Hotspur could look to sign another defender in the next transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes.net, Spurs want to sign Inter Milan colossus Stefan de Vrij in 2022 and view him as a leader that could partner recent summer signing Cristian Romero at the back.

Back in June, the north London outfit were first linked with a move for the 29-year-old Dutch international, per Football Insider, who then claimed that he was valued in the region of £45m following a title-winning campaign at the San Siro.

It remains to be seen exactly how much de Vrij would command, especially as he’ll be in the final year of his contract this time next year. Transfermarkt also value him at £45m.

Imagine him and Romero

Spurs sporting director Fabio Paratici could well create a formidable defensive partnership for the next few years with a move for the 49-time international.

At 29, he would offer some solid experience in the backline and could be the perfect influence on Romero, who at just 23, has several years to go until he reaches his peak.

Throughout the summer transfer window, it was thought that Spurs were looking for two centre-backs and that’s something that they haven’t yet been able to accomplish, so a move for de Vrij would make a lot of sense when business reopens at the turn of the year.

The 6 foot 2 powerhouse played a crucial role in Inter’s title win as Antonio Conte’s side recorded the best defensive record of anyone in the Serie A in 2020/21.

In 32 league appearances, he averaged an impressive 93.8% passing accuracy, which displayed his incredible ball-playing ability and shows exactly why he’d be a fit in Spurs’ new system under Nuno, who likes to play out from the back.

Furthermore, the Dutchman averaged two aerial duels won and 1.3 interceptions per outing, too, and that goes to show that he’s not afraid to use his physicality, whilst he also has intelligence in being able to read the game, as per WhoScored.

De Vrij’s former Lazio teammate Mauricio waxed lyrical about his centre-back partner back in 2018. He told ESPN (via Football Italia): “Stefan is a great defender and deserves to be at a big club. He’s very tall, he’s strong and fast, he runs a lot – he’s a monster!” before later adding: “He’s a calm defender who never gets agitated.”

It’s that sort of presence that Romero could need in north London over the next few seasons.

A player like Eric Dier may have started the 2021/22 campaign in red-hot form, recording three successive clean sheets on Spurs’ way to the top spot and being nominated for the ‘Player of the Month’ award but last season’s mistakes are still fresh in the memory and the club should not pass up on the opportunity to sign an instant upgrade.

So forget what Nuno already has at his disposal, Paratici and co must launch a bid for de Vrij in the next window. On the above evidence, he and Romero would be a scary duo that would cause many a Premier League attack problems.

AND in other news, Spurs receive huge transfer boost over £34m-rated “complete player”, Nuno will be buzzing…

Yousuf joins ICL, gets banned by PCB

Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan batsman, confirmed today that he has signed up for the unauthorised ICL, putting to end all uncertainty surrounding his move

Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan batsman, has formally signed up for the ICL, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his move. The announcement brought a swift response from the Pakistan Cricket Board, which banned him from “any type of cricket” in Pakistan and terminated his central contract.”I have decided to sign for ICL,” Yousuf – who will play for Lahore Badshahs – said in New Delhi. “There was a misunderstanding with the ICL. I was misguided and confused and not able to take a decision earlier.”He also expressed a wish to continue representing the Pakistan national team. “See, I want to continue playing for Pakistan and the ICL authorities also have no problem with that,” he said. He was included in a 15-man squad to take on West Indies in three ODIs later this month, and the PCB will name a replacement, most likely to be Karachi batsman Khalid Latif. However, the PCB’s decision will have put paid to that. “Yousuf will remain banned from playing any type of cricket in Pakistan as he has joined the unrecognised Indian Cricket League,” Zakir Khan, PCB’s director of operations, told Cricinfo. “His central contract has also been cancelled.”Yousuf had initially signed up with the league in September 2007, in protest at being axed from Pakistan’s squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa. He was later lured out of playing in the ICL by the Pakistan board, with the promise of a lucrative contract in the IPL. But the ICL took the matter to an arbitration court in Mumbai, arguing that as Yousuf had signed up with them, he was ineligible to play for any other league.A stay order was passed against Yousuf’s participation in the IPL, though an appeal was later filed by the PCB on Yousuf’s behalf in the Bombay High Court.ICL officials said their legal wrangle with Yousuf has been sorted out and they will file a joint statement in court. “We have resolved matters mutually,” Himanshu Mody, ICL’s business head, said. That isn’t necessarily the end of Yousuf’s legal headaches. The Pakistan board, said Zakir, is looking into recouping “the legal costs we incurred in fighting Yousuf’s case earlier.” IPL officials, meanwhile, said they will look at legal options against Yousuf’s latest move because they had already paid a significant sum of money as advance to Yousuf. But Mody said that Yousuf’s association with the IPL would not be an issue because “there is no contract and no payment made”.

Ashley Preece delivers update on Villa’s Guilbert

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered an insight into the decision to let Aston Villa star Frederic Guilbert join Strasbourg on loan on transfer deadline day.

What’s the story?

Dean Smith’s side had a fairly quiet deadline day after a more hectic summer transfer window saw the likes of Emi Buendia, Danny Ings and Leon Bailey, among others arrive, and Jack Grealish of course leave.

One piece of business the Midlands club did do however, is sending Guilbert back to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, where he spent the second-half of last season on loan at.

And now, in a Q&A for The Birmingham Mail, Preece responded to a question about why the Smith decided to let him go, saying: “Not sure, just doesn’t fancy him at all. A shame because he seems a good guy who always put it all on the line for Villa.”

Villa fans will be frustrated

Writing for The Athletic last year, Gregg Evans said of Guilbert: “I agree, there’s potential, but it seems like Smith has seen enough and favours others.”

A number of Villa fans have already made their feelings clear about Guilbert on several occasions, first slamming the decision to actually let him leave on loan for Strasbourg back in January and suggesting they should’ve kept him, then urging Smith to give him a chance in pre-season earlier this summer after his impressive spell away.

The fact that both Evans and Preece have declared that Smith just isn’t the biggest fan of the full-back is sure to frustrate fans who would have been hoping to see him in action for Villa, and challenging Matty Cash for a first-team spot, or just providing a back-up option for him.

This latest update from Preece is a “shame” as Preece says, and it’s one that won’t have gone down too well with Villa supporters.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has confirmed this Aston Villa starlet will sign a new contract…
