Sir Viv seeing all-rounder In one-day light

Sir Vivian Richards, chairman of the West Indies selection panel, says Vasbert Drakes will be considered for the squad for the seven limited-overs internationals against India that follow the three Tests

12-Sep-2002Sir Vivian Richards, chairman of the West Indies selection panel, says Vasbert Drakes will be considered for the squad for the seven limited-overs internationals against India that follow the three Tests. The selection panel drafted Drakes into the side for the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka but did not pick him for the Test series tour to India.Speaking prior to his departure yesterday for Sri Lanka Sir Viv said: "At the time of his selection, I spoke with Vasbert and made it clear the selection panel felt that the nature of limited-overs cricket and the closeness of the 2003 World Cup meant we needed players like him who could bat and bowl effectively in this form of the game."Having reviewed a few of our matches in recent time, the panel felt that our lower batting urgently needed to be addressed in the limited-overs form of the game, and the way Vasbert handles the bat it was felt he would add to our side."Rev. Wes Hall, president of the West Indies Cricket Board, noted Drakes still had opportunities to play professional cricket in between assignments for the regional team."Vasbert is free to gain employment anywhere as long as he has a clause inserted in his contract that he must be released to play for West Indies whenever picked and that by January he makes himself available to either Barbados or the West Indies team," Hall said.

'Decent' start for debutant Jaggernauth

In an intimidating start to his Test career, Amit Jaggernauth’s first task was to bowl against two of the best batsmen in the world

In an intimidating start to his Test career, Amit Jaggernauth’s first task was to bowl against two of the best batsmen in the world. Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey were not in full cry when he was brought on in the second session, but it was not the easiest entry for Jaggernauth, who called his day “decent”.West Indies struggled for penetration after Fidel Edwards struck two early blows and Jaggernauth was given 20 overs to work his way into the game. He collected 1 for 74 as Australia reached 301 for 4 and the breakthrough was a wicket to remember, with Hussey edging to a flying Dwayne Bravo at first slip.”It wasn’t a bad performance, but there is still a lot of room for improvement,” Jaggernauth said. “I thought I was a bit too aggressive and tried too many things. What I learned today is that in terms of my game I need to be a little more patient at this level. That is something I would like to improve on as fast as possible.”At times he used plenty of flight, but he was also worked by the batsmen when he bowled flatter. “Being given the ball with Ponting and Hussey at the crease was a huge challenge,” he said. “I didn’t look at the individual names, but I tried to bowl at the batsman and tried to work on weaknesses that I saw, or tried to bowl to the specific areas that were asked by the captain.”Jaggernauth, a 24-year-old from Trinidad, is a confident man and he continued to toss the ball up even after being hit for boundaries. “People who have seen me bowl before can testify that I am a very aggressive, attacking spinner,” he said. “That is something that is just in my repertoire. I would always back myself against whoever is batting. I believe I can get them out.”The wicket is already slightly unpredictable and Jaggernauth said the slow bowlers would gain more help over the remainder of the game. “On a first-day track I thought the pitch had some degree of turn and I would expect as the Test goes along the turn would definitely increase,” he said. “On the third and fourth day it’s going to be spinning huge.”

Wolves transfer update on Bailey

Many Wolves fans have been left lauding a transfer update involving Leon Bailey.

As per Bild, the Midlands club have made an offer to sign the Bayer Leverkusen winger in the summer window, along with both Aston Villa and Leicester City.

However, he will not be sold for anything less than €35m (£29.8m), and Villa look to be the favourites at the moment.

Bailey scored a very impressive 15 goals and made a further 11 assists in 40 games in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt), and at just 23 years of age, the Jamaica international surely has the potential to become a truly top player.

Thus, it is not a surprise to see so many members of the Molineux faithful buzzing over his potential signing.

Pundit calls for Spurs to sell Lucas Moura and Moussa Sissoko

Paul Stewart has called for new Tottenham Hotspur head coach Nuno Espirito Santo to boost his transfer budget by selling Lucas Moura and Moussa Sissoko.

Nuno, who left his post as Wolverhampton Wanderers’ chief by mutual agreement at the end of last season, was named as Jose Mourinho’s successor in June.

While he has been keen to bolster his options ahead of the Premier League’s big kick-off, which is less than two weeks away, Nuno has been made to settle for the loan signing of Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil joining from Sevilla in a swap deal which saw Erik Lamela head in the opposite direction.

Former Spurs man Stewart believes Nuno should offload Moura and Sissoko before spending big money on a marquee signing.

Moura, 28, only made 14 Premier League starts last term, while Sissoko was named in the starting line-up just one more time than the Brazilian.

Both Moura and Sissoko are on £80,000-per-week contracts and Stewart believes now is the right time for Nuno to find buyers for the duo.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “I think it’s time for both of them to go.

“When Moura is on form, he’s really good. But it’s far too infrequent.

“With Moussa, you get what you see. He is hardworking for 90 minutes but he’s not going to change the game for you or win you games.”

Aquilo é a realidade.

Nawaz slams appellate tribunal for not lifting Shoaib ban

Sarfraz Nawaz, the former Pakistan fast bowler, has criticised the PCB-appointed appellate tribunal for reducing Shoaib Akhtar’s five-year ban to 18 months and imposing a fine of Rs 7 million (approximately US$105,000), instead of scrapping the punishment

Cricinfo staff16-Jun-2008Sarfraz Nawaz, the former Pakistan fast bowler, has criticised the PCB-appointed appellate tribunal for reducing Shoaib Akhtar’s five-year ban to 18 months and imposing a fine of Rs 7 million (approximately US$105,000), instead of scrapping the punishment altogether.”I call the ban reduction unjust, and it smacks of the partiality of the Pakistan Cricket Board, which is hell bent on not allowing Shoaib to play,” Sarfraz said. “Shoaib must challenge the ban reduction in the High Court or Supreme Court.”Sarfraz especially found fault with Justice (retd) Aftab Farrukh, the chairman of the tribunal. “The tribunal head, on record, gave his views on Shoaib, saying he was indisciplined and caused a lot of harm to the team. How can he be partial and how can he give his comments about a person whose appeal he was hearing?”Referring to tribunal’s decision to suspend Shoaib’s ban for a month, enabling his participation in the IPL, Sarfraz said: “Government officials were involved in the case and, on their interference, Shoaib was allowed to play in a domestic event in India.”It sounds strange that a player is allowed to play in India and not for Pakistan. How can you do that? Shoaib has three to four years of cricket left in him and should be used to help build the team.”The PCB, had, on April 1, banned Shoaib from playing cricket, for and in Pakistan, for violating the players’ code of conduct by publicly criticising the PCB and various policies. Shoaib appealed against the ban, claiming he was being “victimised.” Shoaib’s ban took into account that he was already on two years’ probation for hitting Mohammad Asif with a bat before the start of the World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007. That offence saw him fined 3.4 million rupees ($52,000 dollars) and banned for 13 matches.

Durham surge to the top

A round-up of the County Championship action on July 19, 2008

Cricinfo staff19-Jul-2008Durham moved to the top of the table with a ten-wicket win over Surrey at a blustery Guildford. Surrey appeared to be well on course towards batting their way to a draw as they reached 261 for 3, but with lunch in sight Usman Afzal was caught behind cutting for 73, ending a fourth-wicket stand of 135 with Jon Batty (50). It was downhill all the way from then on as their last seven wickets fell for 62, with Steve Harmison cutting through the tail with 3 for 10 in 13 balls. Set 134 in 45 overs, Durham wasted no time as Mark Stoneman (60*) and Michael Di Venuto (57*) laid into a listless Surrey attack to reach their target with more than ten overs in hand.Somerset moved to the top of Division One – however briefly – after 45 minutes of play on the final day which was all they needed to beat Kent by 246 runs at Taunton. Steffan Jones took the last three wickets, ending with 5 for 53. Jones had McLaren caught behind by Craig Kieswetter for 23, the keeper diving to his left, then next ball Robbie Joseph played all round one and had an lbw shout turned down against Martin Saggers on the hat-trick delivery. Jones claimed Saggers soon enough from a short ball pushed to James Hildreth in the gully and leave Kent nine down. With Rob Key absent following the birth of his second child, Somerset had the win.Ollie Rayner’s career-best 5 for 49 helped seal Sussex’s ten-wicket win against Hampshire at Arundel, their second victory of the summer. On a slow, low pitch Rayner – who was leading the spin attack in the absence of the injured Mushtaq Ahmed – grabbed match figures of 7 for 89 with his offspin. This was only the side’s fifth win in any cricket this term, and it was the first time in eight years they have taken to the field without an overseas player.

Following on, the home side resumed on 20 for 0 and once they started losing wickets, they couldn’t stop. The loss of in-form Dawid Malan was a key scalp, trapped low in front by Woakes, who also picked up Owais Shah in similar fashion, as well as Murali Karthik who had offered vain resistance with a topscoring 44. Either side of Karthik’s wicket, Woakes removed Tim Murtagh and Danny Evans. It was a day for batting practice at Wantage Road once Northamptonshire just managed to avoid the follow-on in the morning. From then on Chris Rogers’ second hundred of the summer steered Derbyshire to 275 for 6, with Dan Birch (71) and Wavell Hinds (64) chipping in before bad light brought an early end.
