James leads the way as Glamorgan win again

Steve James guided Glamorgan to their second Championship win of the season with a marvellous 121 as the Welsh county defeated Durham by five wickets

Andrew Hignell18-May-2002Steve James guided Glamorgan to their second Championship win of the season with a marvellous 121 as the Welsh county defeated Durham by five wickets. After rain had delayed the start of the final day`s play by an hour, James adopted a positive outlook as he and David Hemp began Glamorgan`s pursuit of 201 to win the game. The pair had added a brisk 56 when Hemp was dismissed in the opening over of the afternoon session, but a flurry of crisply timed strokes from James kept the Cardiff scoreboard ticking over, and the Glamorgan skipper duly reached a well deserved century from 138 balls with 15 fours. It was the 44th century of James` first-class career, and his first Championship hundred for 11 months. “It was good to get some runs on the board”, he said afterwards, “because I`ve not had the best of starts to the season. To score a hundred, and for Glamorgan to win was very nice.””We are playing some good cricket at the moment, and in particular, Darren Thomas is bowling as well as at any stage of his career. He bowled a superb spell in Durham`s first innings. Mike Kasprowicz is in good form as well, whilst Simon Jones` extra pace is starting to frighten a few people!”

Rangers reject £10m Morelos bid

An update has emerged on Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos, regarding Porto’s attempts to sign him…

What’s the talk?

According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Rangers have turned down a £10m (€12m) offer from Portuguese giants Porto for forward Alfredo Morelos. The Gers have rejected Porto’s opening salvo and are said to be in no rush to cash in on him.

Konor adds that Porto are not the only team interested in signing Morelos, although he has not dropped any specific names in terms of other clubs.

Disaster

Steven Gerrard must avoid a disaster for Rangers with Morelos this summer. The ex-Liverpool man cannot afford to be bullied into selling the attacker for less than he is worth to the club and rejecting this first bid from Porto is a promising first step in the transfer window.

Morelos has been a prolific scorer since joining the Scottish giants and has proven his worth over a number of seasons. The Colombian international has scored an impressive 94 goals, and provided 43 assists, in 182 competitive appearances for the club.

If a club has the finances to come in and blow Rangers away with a very attractive bid, then Ross Wilson and Gerrard will need to hold their hands up and realise that that money could go a long way to improving the squad. They could spend it on several additions and round out the overall strength of the squad to make up for the departure of Morelos.

The £33k-per-week dynamo leaving would be a blow to Gerrard’s squad and that is why they need to hold out for as much money as possible. Not only does he have a fantastic goalscoring record, but his peers are also full of praise for him. Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership player labelled Morelos as “non-stop” and praised the way his movement made him difficult to defend: “In my experience, he is just non-stop.

“There’s never a time when he’s walking about or not interested in the game. He’s always involved, whether that’s taking you away or dragging you closer to the ball.

“He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space. That means you need to start talking to your full-backs and centre-mids to start swapping players, which makes it a lot more difficult.”

Rangers have done well to reject Porto’s opening offer, they must stick to their guns and only allow Morelos to leave if a club makes a significantly larger offer. Selling a proven goalscorer on the cheap would be a disastrous move for the Gers.

Stubborn resistance from Somerset tail thwarts Hampshire.

Vic Isaacs15-Jun-2002The fourth and last day of the Frizzell Championship match between Somerset and Hampshire at the Bath Recreation Ground, proved to be the only one with a full schedule, no stoppages for light or rain, and it proved to be an enthralling days play, with the result in doubt until the close.Hampshire started the day with 3 runs and 4 wickets lost in the second innings, and soon lost Neil Johnson and Nic Pothas to reach 16 for 6, and a meagre 107 lead.Dimitri Mascarenhas however had better thoughts as he crashed seven fours for his run a ball 31. Robin Smith then bravely battled with an injured back to give some respectability to the total, including punching Bulbeck for a six and four off successive balls; his 41 not out led Hampshire to 98 all out and set Somerset 190 to win in a minimum of 61 overs. Richard Johnson taking 7 for 43With the seamers dominating throughout the four days, this was always going to be a tough ask, and when 2 wickets fell to Chris Tremlett early on, it needed some recovery.Australian Jamie Cox and Peter Bowler got their heads down and with help from the middle order looked like making a serious challenge for victory. When three wickets fell for just one run it made Hampshire favourites for the match, but stubborn resistance by the tail thwarted their efforts, acting captain Will Kendall trying all sorts of bowling changes to no avail.Keith Dutch and Matt Bulbeck batted out the last seven overs to see the home team hold out for a draw.

India stroll to victory as Hampshire subside

The last day’s play for the Indians before the Lord’s Test that starts on Thursday ended as expected, in less than spectacular fashion

Anand Vasu22-Jul-2002The last day’s play for the Indians before the Lord’s Test that starts on Thursday ended as expected, in less than spectacular fashion. Chasing 253 for victory on a wicket that was increasingly difficult to bat on, Hampshire were bowled out for 186 in 46.2 overs, giving India victory by 66 runs. The day’s play was of purely academic interest, with the result almost a foregone conclusion. It began with Hampshire’s Robin Smith and John Francis attempting to keep the Indian bowlers at bay. With deliveries continuing to surprise batsmen by bounce or the lack of the same, there was little the bowlers needed to do besides putting the ball in the right place.Sanjay Bangar got one right on target to trap Smith (19) in front of the stumps. Lawrence Prittipaul, a cousin of the popular West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul, entered to encouraging cheers. The middle-order batsman gave those gathered at the Rose Bowl reason to smile, as he played a few fierce cuts that raced to the fence. On a day where batting was a bit of a lottery, Prittipaul livened things up with an innings of 32 in just 40 balls. By the time he had begun to look good, however, wickets were falling at the other end. John Francis (19) gave Tinu Yohannan his only wicket of the innings. From then on to 129/8 there was little batting of note, and it appeared that the game would be over well before the scheduled luncheon interval at 1 o’clock. But Hampshire’s batting can hardly be expected to fold up to suit those looking out for a good lunch. Shaun Udal batted imaginatively to reach an unbeaten 36, putting on 57 for the ninth, and effectively last wicket.James Tomlinson (23) supported Udal as best as he could, but could not get the bat down in time to keep out a Kumble skidder. When the appeal for lbw was upheld, it was all over for the hosts. John Crawley, due to do duty for England in the forthcoming Test series, did not bat. The middle-order batsman, laid low by a virus, could have just as easily been kept back to avoid the risk of injury on this Rose Bowl wicket. While sections of the media have been quick to decry the Hampshire authorities for the wicket, Indian coach John Wright was his calm, collected self. “Obviously we would have liked a better surface,” he told reporters soon after the match. “But we don’t like to moan and groan about it. This is a new surface and it will take a bit of time to settle down,” he added. The decision to rest both left arm seamers Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan raised a few eyebrows, but once again Wright had his answers close at hand. “They’ve all done a lot of bowling in the recent past and it was a conscious decision on our part to give them a rest. We’ve simulated match conditions in practice sessions and preparations are fine.”In contrast to India, England have had their share of injury worries. With Darren Gough, Alex Tudor, Marcus Trescothick and Andy Caddick all on the injured list, Nasser Hussain and Duncan Fletcher have a bit to worry about.Wright, though, was happy to leave the worrying to the opposite camp. “We don’t really want to think too much about the injuries in the England team. It’s not the way we think. They’re a highly competitive side and we know that from their recent tour to India. What we need to do is concentrate on playing well, as close to our potential as possible. We nearly did that in the one-dayers, and that’s what we need to take forward to the Tests as well,” said Wright. It is true that India’s preparations for the Test series have been hampered by the two-paced nature of this wicket. But Wright was quick to reassure journalists that the Indian team was well prepared. When pressed to make further comment on the wicket, Wright sprang a surprise. Departing from his usually guarded and careful style of answering, he said: “I’m told wickets are a bit like red wine. They need a bit of time to settle down.” There was a twinkle in is eye as he ended the press conference and moved over to the nets where the Indians were having a session. Wine apart, the Indian team certainly appear in high spirits going in to the Test series.

Liverpool fans bemoan Houssem Aouar rumour

Some Liverpool supporters have been reacting negatively to a report claiming the Reds are interested in signing Lyon star Houssem Aouar.

Gini Wijnaldum’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain means Jurgen Klopp could be on the lookout for a new midfielder this summer, in order to retain depth in his squad.

While Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are strong options, the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are injury-prone and Curtis Jones is still learning his trade.

According to ESPN journalist Julien Laurens, Liverpool are one of a host of Premier League clubs keen on signing Lyon midfielder Aouar this summer.

The 23-year-old scored seven times in Ligue 1 this season, also registering three assists, proving to be a creative force for the French side.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are also believed to be keen on snapping up the £37.8million-rated Frenchman.
