Manish Sharma guides North to eight-wicket win in Deodhar Trophy

Kicking off their Deodhar Trophy campaign on the right foot, North Zone beat West Zone by an eight-wicket margin at Amritsar, overhauling a target of 182 in just 44.2 overs.

Staff Reporter20-Feb-2002Kicking off their Deodhar Trophy campaign on the right foot, North Zone beat West Zone by an eight-wicket margin at Amritsar, overhauling a target of 182 in just 44.2 overs.Winning the toss, West skipper Jacob Martin opted to bat. The openers put on 42 runs for the first wicket, but apart from one, none of the other batsmen, including Martin himself, could contribute significantly with the bat. West Zone collapsed to 181 all out in 45 overs, hit largely by Delhi bowler Amit Bhandari’s figures of 4-29.The exception in West’s batting line-up was Hrishikesh Kanitkar. Batting as well as he could amidst the ruins, Kanitkar made 73 off 95 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes in the process. His was the eighth wicket to fall, and West Zone tailenders added only 11 more runs after Kanitkar’s dismissal.Gautam Gambhir has come off a fine double century against the visiting Zimbabwe team, but he must be wondering what he has to do to make it into the national team. His knock of 45, however, was as even-tempered as ever, coming off 62 balls and featuring four fours.Gambhir fell with the score on 94, and Dinesh Mongia followed him back into the hut 20 runs later. But opener Manish Sharma took the support of Mithun Manhas to hit an unbeaten 99 off 146 balls, striking nine fours and two sixes. He tragically missed out on a century, but his innings was pivotal in taking North to its target in fine style.

Ex-Leeds ace tips free agent for Elland Road move - exclusive

Former Leeds United man David Norris believes that Paulo Gazzaniga would be a fine signing for the club if they were searching for a back-up to Illan Meslier.

Gazzaniga is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the month.

He spent the second half of the season on loan at La Liga club Elche, playing eight times in the Spanish top-flight and keeping two clean sheets.

The Argentine has been with Spurs since 2017 but is set to end a four-year association with the club at the end of the month.

In total, the former Southampton ‘keeper made 37 appearances for Spurs, regularly deputising for Hugo Lloris whenever the Frenchman was injured.

He was undoubtedly the number two in the squad behind the Spurs captain, and Norris believes he could well be a fine signing for Leeds if they are in the market for a goalkeeper.

Indeed, Kiko Casilla is likely to leave the club this summer after falling out of favour under manager Marcelo Bielsa, and bringing Gazzaniga in would add depth in Meslier’s position.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “It’s always interesting with keepers because you’re either a number one or you accept that you’re a number two.

“You don’t really go, ‘I’ve done my number two, I want to be a number one now’, and they only want to be a number one. Number two keepers seem to understand that. They are the number two keeper and not many teams will have two number ones, because they’ll have two keepers that want to play all the time, it’s not going to work.

“So it depends on if he’s happy to come from being a number two at Spurs to being a number two at Leeds or whether he’s looking now to move and play somewhere and be a number one.

“Spurs, Leeds, two massive clubs, if you’re number two at Spurs and then number two at Leeds, it’s a sideways move, it’s not a drop down.”

Everton handed boost in Smalling pursuit

Everton have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Chris Smalling to Goodison Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Corriere Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claimed that the AS Roma centre-back is no longer considered non-transferable by the Serie A club, with both Tiago Pinto and Jose Mourinho believed to be open to the sale of the 31-year-old in the summer transfer window.

The report added that Everton are extremely interested in making a move for the former Manchester United defender, and should Marcel Brands submit an acceptable offer, Roma would not stand in the way of Smalling’s departure from the Stadio Olimpico this summer.

Brands will be buzzing

While Smalling did not have the best of seasons for the Giallorossi last time out, something which was largely down to the centre-back picking up a number of varying injuries, the 31-year-old’s form in the season prior demonstrated that, as long as he keeps himself injury-free, he would be a fantastic signing for the Toffees to get over the line this summer.

Indeed, over his 30 Serie A appearances for Paulo Fonseca’s side in 2019/20, the £10.8m-rated man helped his side to keep six clean sheets, as well as averaging 1.9 interceptions, 0.8 tackles and four clearances and winning 4.5 duels per game.

The England international also impressed for Roma in an attacking capacity that term, scoring three goals, providing two assists and averaging 0.3 key passes per league fixture. These returns saw the £102,000-per-week centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.12, ranking him as Roma’s sixth-best performer in the Italian top-flight that year.

As such, with Marcel Brands undoubtedly hoping to build a squad in the summer transfer market which would be capable of much more than Everton’s 10th-placed finish in the Premier League last time around, the news that the player Fonseca dubbed an “extraordinary” defender is available on the transfer market is sure to have left the Toffees director of football buzzing.

Glamorgan confirm Kasprowicz signing

Glamorgan Cricket today confirmed that Australian quick bowler Michael Kasprowicz has been signed to play for the county for the 2002 season on a one-year contract.

Media Release22-Mar-2002Glamorgan Cricket today confirmed that Australian quick bowler Michael Kasprowicz has been signed to play for the county for the 2002 season on a one-year contract.Kasprowicz, 30, has played in 17 Test matches and 16 One-Day Internationals for Australia and will be available for the county for the whole season. He is currently playing for Queensland in the Pura Milk Cup Final.Glamorgan Captain Steve James said: "We’re delighted to have recruited a player of Michael’s quality and we look forward to him joining up with us in mid-April. He has been a consistently solid performer in first class cricket, both in Australia, where he is again amongst the leading wicket takers this season, and also in county cricket, when he played for Essex and Leicestershire.”It was important to us that he was available for the whole season and the fact that he has a good track record in terms of fitness and can also bat effectively as well is a bonus. Like David Hemp, our other main signing this winter, I think he’ll prove to be an excellent acquisition and I’m very happy to be welcoming him on board.”Glamorgan Chief Executive Mike Fatkin said: “Naturally we’re pleased to be able to confirm our overseas player for the summer. There has been a great deal of speculation over the past couple of months and we seem to have been linked with any number of potential signings but having decided on Michael the details were sorted out pretty quickly.”It’s proving difficult for a number of counties now that there is so much cricket taking place that clashes with our domestic season, one of the reasons why it’s taken until now to confirm everything. It’s good to know that his Queensland team mate Jimmy Maher, who played for us last year, gave the Club such a glowing reference and I know Michael is anticipating an enjoyable and successful season with Glamorgan.”The Glamorgan players are due to travel to Cape Town for their pre-season practice next Thursday, March 28th, returning on 12th April. Their first match is against Derbyshire at Sophia Gardens on 19th April.

Goleiros: Fernando Prass e Jailson
Laterais: Egídio, Jean e Zé Roberto
Zagueiros: Antônio Carlos, Edu Dracena, Mina, Thiago Martins e Vitor Hugo
Meio-campistas: Guerra, Michel Bastos, Raphael Veiga, Thiago Santos e Vitinho
Atacantes: Alecsandro, Dudu, Erik, Keno, Rafael Marques, Róger Guedes e Willian
