Youhana's double century day but Saqlain two short of first ton

Saqlain Mushtaq will be looking for two runs to achieve a much wanted maiden Test century on the last morning of the second National Bank series Test against New Zealand, but it will be wickets he is chasing later in the day

Lynn McConnell18-Mar-2001Saqlain Mushtaq will be looking for two runs to achieve a much wanted maiden Test century on the last morning of the second National Bank series Test against New Zealand, but it will be wickets he is chasing later in the day.Saqlain, after batting all day, was 98 not out at the end as Pakistan ended the fourth day 85 runs in front of New Zealand on 561/7 with Saqlain unable to get enough of the strike in the last half hour to register his century. The whole day was one of accumulation as the New Zealand attack went wicketless until 30 minutres before stumps as Yousuf Youhana built towards his maiden double century in Test cricket. Only 220 runs were scored on the day for the one wicket. It may have been slow stuff but for Youhana it was the latest highlight in a stunning batting sequence who has now scored five centuries in his last eight Tests. His highest score before today was 124 scored against England at Lahore in December.Total concentration, with little of the flair he showed during his first 50, was rewarded in a fine batting effort that offered the New Zealanders no hope until Mark Richardson, a former left-arm spinner who suffered the yips, changed to bowling medium-pacers and then became an opening batsman, was used as a bowling alternative and picked up Youhana’s wicket, caught and bowled for 203.Youhana shared a 248-run stand for the seventh wicket in 372 minutes off 571 balls.”It was my best Test century, it was chanceless and it was good for Pakistan,” he said. The innings came as the result of a change in emphasis in his batting. He is playing straighter and containing some of the attacking shots which have marked the earlier part of his career.Having Saqlain with him during the day was also important as he said he has been his partner for five of his six centuries.”My instructions were to get the scores level and then play on to get a lead of 150 runs. It is a perfect batting track,” he said.Saqlain said he was very pleased with his batting effort and enjoys the battle with his concentration when batting.”It was a pleasure batting with Yousuf. He reckon he is one of the great batsmen in the world and it is all credit to him.”Whenever I play I always try to bat well and hopefully I will get my 100 tomorrow,” he said.Asked about the baseball-type shot which when struck properly, which on this occasion was most of the time, heads toward the mid off boundary very quickly, he said: “It was my favourite shot when I used to play it on the street as a child.”Yousuf did try to tell me to stop playing it but I said I wanted to play it, and then he said, ‘Do it carefully.'”Saqlain said he wasn’t panicking by the end of the day when he was so close to his century.Comparing his innings with that played when scoring his previous highest score of 79 during a world record partnership with Wasim Akram, he said, this was a much better innings.”That time I wasn’t that experienced or mature. I didn’t slog then.”This is my best innings and it is my great wish to score a Test century,” he said. And the chances of still being able to win the Test by bowling New Zealand out again were good.”I reckon in cricket anything can happen. I am very keen to bowl tomorrow. One good spell could change it.”There a quite a few footmarks out there, more than in the first innings and the bounce is still there,” he said.As for New Zealand, their bowlers were forced to make up the difference with Chris Drum out of the attack and it was a fine effort to restrict Pakistan to as few runs as the 220 scored. Despite the long haul in the field, the fielding effort was competitive all day.

Celtic: Ntcham edges closer to AEK move

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham is edging closer to a move to Greek side AEK Athens, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Hoops to terminate Ntcham’s deal?

Reports last month suggested that the Hoops have exploited a loophole in the Frenchman’s contract.

His deal at Parkhead still has 12 months left to run, however, Celtic were ready to terminate the last year and absolve themselves of the requirement to pay his wages.

It appears as if Ntcham has now taken his future into his own hands and is awaiting a response from Celtic to seal a Glasgow exit.

The Latest: Ntcham agrees personal terms

The Scottish Sun claim that Ntcham has agreed on a deal with AEK Athens worth around £1million a year, just over £19,000-a-week.

Ntcham, who Neil Lennon described as ‘class’, is currently on £15,000-a-week at Parkhead and is now waiting to see if he can seal a free transfer away from the club.

AEK are hoping to land him for nothing, with the report on Tuesday evening claiming a deal may go through over the coming days.

The Verdict: McKay’s first piece of transfer activity at Celtic?

New Celtic CEO Dominic McKay will have to be at the heart of any potential Ntcham exit, considering there is currently no manager or director of football in place.

Should a transfer materialise over the coming days, it could also be the club’s first real piece of summer transfer business since McKay’s arrival – the window opened on Wednesday.

In an ideal world Celtic would receive a transfer fee for the 25-year-old, valued at £2.7m by Transfermarkt, but at least they’ll be getting a high earner off the books, which could allow for incomings over the coming months.

Experiência do colombiano Berrío na Libertadores ajudará o Fla, diz Diego

Steve Bull stunned by Ruben Neves’ £35m Wolves price tag

Ruben Neves’ reported £35m price tag is “a bit of a laugh”, says former Wolves striker Steve Bull.

According to Goal, Neves is a target for Arsenal as they eye up a replacement for Granit Xhaka, who continues to be linked with a move to AS Roma.

The same outlet reports Wolves value their Portuguese midfielder at £35m, a value Arsenal could be reluctant to pay.

It all comes as a shock to Bull, who thinks Neves is worth even more than the current price tag that is floating around.

Speaking exclusively to TT about the player, he said:

“I think £35m, they’re having a bit of a laugh. I think he’s a top-class player. He’s been a bit rusty over the last 12 months, he’s been in and out the side, so I think he just needs revitalising.

“Maybe a new start, a new club might do that for him.”

Having signed Neves for around £15m from Porto back in 2017, at least Wolves would be making quite a bit of profit if they did end up selling him to Arsenal for £35m.

That kind of money could also help new manager Bruno Lage bring in a couple of players to improve a Wolves side that let their standard drop a bit last season after coming 13th, six positions lower than their finish in the 2019/20 campaign.

Sri Lanka's cricket administrators return to the courts

As Sri Lankan players rest their weary limbs after five months on thegruelling international circuit, the prolonged struggle for control of thecountry’s ruling cricket body rumbles on with an intensity that thecricketers would struggle to surpass

Charlie Austin03-May-2001As Sri Lankan players rest their weary limbs after five months on thegruelling international circuit, the prolonged struggle for control of thecountry’s ruling cricket body rumbles on with an intensity that thecricketers would struggle to surpass.Thilanga Sumathipala, the president of the sacked cricket board, revealedthe latest twist to an increasingly tiresome tale, when he announced todaythat he had filed a complaint at the Cinnamon Gardens Police station whichaccused the Interim Committee, who were appointed by the Sports Minister fourweeks ago, of fraudulently distributing the cricket board’s funds and takingunlawful possession of board property. This is just the latest in a string of legal petitions, orders, and actions. It is a devilishly complicated affair and, in a country where the legalsystem is notoriously cumbersome, a simple resolution is unlikely. The logic of the outgoing cricket board’s argument is quite clear, even ifthe legal uncertainty is frustrating. Sumathipala’s clan believes that theSports Minister made a blunder. He dismissed them on a proceduraltechnicality, but then made a procedural mistake of his own.If he had suspended the board, as happened after the 1999 AGM, thenSumathipala would have had to have accepted that he was now out of politicalfavour and gone back to attend to his burgeoning commercial empire. As it was, however, the Sports Minister dissolved the board and broke theSports Law, which states that the Minister can order the dissolution, butthe board must then wind up its affairs. Moreover, Sumathipala’s legalteam is convinced that the subsequent appointment of the Interim Committeewas unlawful.Legal nit-picking perhaps, but there is some logic. If the Board of Controlfor Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) has been dissolved, then how can theInterim Committee dig into the board’s financial coffers? Sumathipala isconfident they cannot and as soon as the Interim Committee signed theirfirst cheque he marched down to the police station to complain. Some of the country’s cricket clubs and associations met this weekto continue the attack on the Sports Ministry. They passed a resolutiondemanding a return to democracy and appointed a steering committee torepresent the membership until the BCCSL is reinstated.Tomorrow, it’s back to the courts, as the secretary and treasurer of thedissolved board argue in the Court of Appeal that the dissolution of theboard was unlawful and that they should be immediately reinstated. The Interim Committee, led by Vijaya Malalsekera, have remained tight-lipped. They, like others, are awaiting with interest the outcome oftomorrow’s hearing in the Court of Appeal. With the support of the SportsMinister, who allegedly has the full support of the government and the mainopposition party, one suspects, however, that they are quietly confident. The crucial test of the Interim Committee’s legitimacy will be the banks, who operate the cricket board’s accounts and will want to protect their backsfrom Sumathipala’s hungry lawyers. If their legal advisors believe thatthe Interim Committee does not have the necessary authority to distribute theboard’s funds then the Minister may well be forced to reinstate theboard. In the meantime, it is the cricketers who are likely to lose out. A powervacuum in Sri Lankan cricket’s controlling body will slow downdecision-making and water down policies. The players will become frustrated, and beating a resurgent Indian side in the forthcoming Test series willbecome an even greater challenge than it already is.

Leeds United handed major finance boost

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has been handed a major boost as some exciting news emerges from Thorp Arch about the club’s finances for the summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Whites enjoyed a superb end to the Premier League season, reeling off four wins in a row and climbing up the table and into the top ten. And that late run of form may have handed Bielsa a major boost, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire.

He said to Football Insider: “Leeds can certainly afford to spend more. They have had substantial financial developments. They finished 9th and probably budgeted to finish something like 16th.

“So realistically, they’ve got an extra £15-20m from that particular (prize money) pot. They were also chosen as the first picks for matches to be broadcast live on TV 24 times, so that’s an extra £14m. That’s because the first 10 picks are considered part of the overall deal and anything above that is an additional £1m per match.

“So we’ve automatically got around about £35m in the budget that they hadn’t originally budgeted for. The sponsors are very keen to get into bed with them too, so you’d imagine that Leeds will have a pretty good budget to work with this summer.”

Fans will be buzzing

With the Premier League’s prize money divvied up based on a team’s final finish, and scaling up for every place you end up higher, Leeds’ late flurry of victories has had a massive impact on the club’s finances for this summer.

As Maguire says, the fact they leapt up the table into ninth has given them an “extra £15-20m” based on that Premier League finish alone – after match-day 30, they were in 11th, with Crystal Palace and Southampton all within a couple of wins behind them.

Then, when you take into account the kind of money they should be getting for being selected as part of the TV coverage, things are looking very exciting for Bielsa and his plans for the summer transfer window.

Maguire himself thinks that Leeds should have around £35m more than they originally budgeted for, and when you think that sum of money is actually significantly higher than the club-record £26m they paid to sign Rodrigo, and you can see just how game-changing that could be.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/leeds-united-marcelo-bielsa-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-elland-road-rodrigo-de-paul” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Bielsa will surely be buzzing with Maguire’s claim and insight, as will the Leeds supporters who will be keen to see their club make a splash in the transfer market this summer as the Yorkshire side look to push on from an excellent first season back in the top flight.

If Leeds do have more money available than they’d budgeted for, as Maguire suggests, then their chances of getting more transfer business completed this summer will surely have increased, and that’ll be music to the ears of the club’s loyal supporters.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa is eyeing a reunion with this Leeds United hero…
