In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, ex-Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has backed Steven Gerrard to become manager of his former club one day.

This comes after Football Insider reported that Villa chief executive Christian Purslow is keen on bringing the Rangers boss to Villa Park in the future.

Gerrard has had a Scottish Premiership campaign to remember this season, with his side managing to win the title and put an end to Celtic’s dominance in the process.

Bearing that in mind, it is no surprise that a club like Villa seemingly have the Liverpool legend on their radar.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about Villa’s reported interest in Gerrard, Hendrie said:

“I think if he had the choice of coming to a club like Villa, I think he’d certainly have a big look at that. He’s had that experience of going up and actually proving that he can do it.”

The ex-Villa player also went on to add:

“You can never rule it out. Christian Purslow would certainly say, ‘Yeah, I’d love Stevie G to be an Aston Villa manager.’ I think lots of people would possibly like the fact of that.

“I personally think he could come into the Premier League. I don’t want Dean Smith to go obviously, but if that was the upcoming manager, you’d think, ‘I wouldn’t mind having him at the football club.’ “

While Villa may admire Gerrard, it is hard to imagine him leaving Rangers now given he has the chance to manage the Glasgow giants in the Champions League next season.

On top of that, Smith’s job in the Villa Park dugout looks safe for now, as the Villans continue to keep their distance from the relegation zone.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that he would not swap Ollie Watkins for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Both England strikers were on the scoresheet in Villa’s recent 2-1 win over Everton, with Calvert-Lewin grabbing his 15th Premier League goal of the season in what has been a brilliant campaign for the 24-year-old.

Watkins himself, though, has also been in stunning form this term, picking up his 13th league goal in that fixture. And Hendrie has made it clear he would not swap the former Brentford man for Calvert-Lewin if he had the chance.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about the two strikers, the ex-Villa player said:

“I think if I put the two together in comparison, they’re very similar in certain aspects. if I had to choose one, I’ve been pleased with what Ollie Watkins has produced this season since coming to Villa.

“He’s also got that versatile sort of position where he can go and drift out into a left or right side of the three, so I’d certainly stick with Ollie Watkins.”

Indeed, looking at their goalscoring records this season, Watkins and £40.5m-rated Calvert-Lewin are two talented centre-forwards.

The campaigns they are having will come as a big boost to Gareth Southgate and England ahead of the European Championships in the summer.

Em entrevista ao site Depor, do Peru, o técnico Zé Ricardo fez elogios ao atleta e mostrou ter conhecimento sobre as características do camisa 6. Contudo, negou ter informações sobre o suposto interesse do clube carioca.

– Miguel Trauco tem demonstrado uma boa leitura do jogo ofensivo e defensivo. É um atleta com boa pegada. Tem muito futuro, pois é um jovem de valor que seguirá crescendo. Não tenho informação que o Flamengo está com interesse direto no jogador. Porém, sempre há gente do clube observando os talentos com potencial. Não sei mais detalhes – disse o treinador.

O departamento de futebol do Flamengo negou ter um acordo pelo jogador, conforme divulgado por parte da imprensa peruana. Contudo, o clube está em busca de um lateral-esquerdo para substituir Chiquinho, que vai deixar o Flamengo ao fim da temporada.

Miguel Trauco tem 24 anos e vem se destacando no Universitario. Ele é companheiro de Guerrero na seleção peruana, mas não enfrenta o Brasil, nesta quarta-feira, pois está suspenso.

De acordo com o site peruano ‘Libero’, Miguel Trauco teria propostas da Itália e da Bélgica, além do suposto interesse do Flamengo.

Um vídeo que circula nas redes sociais mostra jogadores e membros da comissão técnica da Chapecoense no primeiro trecho da viagem rumo à Medelin (COL). وعقد الحضري جلسة مع أيمن طاهر مدرب حراس الفريق، عقب انتهاء التدريب، استفسر خلالها عن حراس الزمالك وبعض الأمور الفنية.

واستأنف الزمالك تدريباته اليوم استعدادًا لمباراة فيوتشر المقبلة، المقرر لها يوم الأربعاء المقبل في المباراة المؤجلة من الجولة العاشرة لمسابقة الدوري الممتاز، والتي ستقام باستاد القاهرة الدولي.

وكان مرتضى منصور رئيس مجلس إدارة نادي الزمالك أعلن عن تعيين أسامة نبيه مدربًا عامًا للفريق، خلفًا لمدحت عبد الهادي، كما قرر تعيين أحمد عبد المقصود مدربًا مساعدًا خلفًا لـ أمير عزمي مجاهد، بينما تم إسناد مهمة تدريب الحراس إلى أيمن طاهر، قبل أن يعلن عن رحيل باتريس كارتيرون.

Celtic-linked Josh Doig has said that his current club Hibernian is a ‘great pathway to go to higher places’ but insisted that he ‘absolutely adores’ being at Easter Road.

The lowdown

Sky Sports reported in January that Celtic, along with Arsenal and Chelsea, were monitoring the young left-back, who this weekend has been named the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year award, seeing off David Turnbull and Nathan Patterson.

Hibs team-mate Joe Newell was among those to congratulate the 18-year-old on an ‘amazing achievement’ in his breakthrough season.

Doig, who is valued at just £450,000 by Transfermarkt, has made 26 league appearances for Hibs this season, scoring once and providing four assists. He has averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.3 clearances, 0.7 interceptions and 1.3 successful aerial duels per game (via WhoScored).

The latest

Doig was asked about outside interest in an interview with The Scotsman. Whilst he did hint at a desire to ascend the footballing ladder, he insists that Hibernian is an ideal setting for his development.

The youngster namechecked John McGinn, who moved from Hibs to Aston Villa in 2018 and is now a Premier League regular.

He said: “It’s crazy because I’ve grown up watching all these clubs and for any of them even to show an interest…

“Whatever happens happens. But as long as I’m playing football, whether it’s here, at Barcelona, or back at Queen’s Park, that’s what I want.

“I absolutely adore it here at Hibs.

“You can see with the likes of John McGinn, I know Hibs is a great pathway to go to higher places but it still a massive club in itself.

“We could finish third this season.

“I don’t think there’s a better place than Hibs to develop as a player.”

The verdict

It does sound as if Doig would like to remain in Edinburgh for the time being. He really has spoken of his club in glowing terms, although the use of phrases like ‘whatever happens happens’ and ‘great pathway’ could leave the door somewhat open for a future move elsewhere.

Having already caught the eye of Arsenal and Chelsea, though, perhaps he’s looking to go straight from Easter Road to the English game just as McGinn did.

In other news, Celtic are said to be keen on this English League One starlet.

Ivan Toney endured something of a shocker on Monday evening as Brentford slipped up in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final against Bournemouth.

Having been in a remarkable run of form towards the business end of the season, with Thomas Frank’s side going 12 games unbeaten in the run-up to the play-offs, the side who finished third in the Championship table appeared to be the strong favourites over a Bournemouth team who had finished 10 points behind them in sixth.

The goalscoring form of Toney seemed to be yet another string to the Brentford bow heading into the clash, with the 25-year-old having scored a remarkable 31 Championship goals in addition to registering 10 assists over his 46 appearances in the second tier this season.

However, both Brentford and Toney were completely nullified by Jonathan Woodgate’s side on Monday evening, with the Cherries nabbing a 1-0 win against the Bees thanks to a second half Arnaut Danjuma strike.

Toney’s performance was particularly disappointing, with the £16.2m-rated centre-forward managing no shots on or off target and a mere one shot blocked over the course of the 90 minutes. The former Peterborough United man also saw very little of the ball at the Vitality Stadium, managing just 40 touches, significantly fewer than that of Brentford’s goalkeeper David Raya, who had 54 touches.

Even when the £21k-per-week striker did have the ball at his feet he often proved rather careless, losing possession 14 times as well as completing only 14 of his 24 attempted passes, a success rate of just 58%.

Indeed, Toney’s overall SofaScore match rating of 6.8 is something which will have to be considerably improved upon if Brentford are to have any hope of progressing to the play-off final, as the striker, who has often been the Bees’ saviour this season, badly let Frank down on Monday as their promotion hopes took a huge dent.
