Liverpool must bring in a centre-back this month, regardless of whether it’s a long-term signing or not to give the players confidence.

Centre-back required

Those were the words of former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer, who reacted to the Reds’ recent poor run in all competitions.

In 2021, Liverpool have won just once from five attempts and have scored six goals, with key defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out with season-ending knee injuries.

On top of this, Joel Matip continues to struggle with his own personal fitness issues – leaving manager Jurgen Klopp with no established centre-halves at his disposal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Transfer Tavern, Palmer believes that Liverpool must prioritise bringing in a centre-back this month, regardless of the financial implications.

“Liverpool are not keeping clean sheets. They’re not out of the Premier League title race so they need to get a centre-back in until Van Dijk gets back. They need to do that because that gives (the team a) basis,” he said.

“People are looking at the front three and saying, ‘Oh, they’re not performing anymore’ but you see, if you remember last year when they won the league, they played at Southampton, I remember that game specifically because that was typical of their performances in the league that season where it was a strong first half defensive display by Liverpool to keep them in the game. Mane scores a goal out of nothing, just before half time, and then they go on to win the game comfortably.

“But it’s that basis that you need to keep clean sheets and Liverpool are not keeping clean sheets. So they need to do that now. They’ve either got to go for a loan or a short term signing and get somebody in so they can get a platform, then the rest of the players now can start believing that ‘yes, we’re going to keep clean sheets. Now. We’ve got the front three, we’re going to score goals.’”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

Palmer is spot on. While Klopp has dropped subtle hints to the club’s owners FSG about the possibility of signing a defender, it is something that the Reds desperately need.

Liverpool are making the same mistake as Manchester City last season, with Aymeric Laporte’s injury, no Vincent Kompany replacement and Fernandinho having to step in. It seems all too familiar and it looks like lessons that haven’t been learned from that.

With the transfer deadline on Monday, Liverpool do not have long to make a move but Palmer thinks they need to if they want a chance at retaining their title.

West Brom have been handed a fresh update in their pursuit of Celta Vigo midfielder Okay Yokuslu.

Last week, the Daily Mail reported that the 28-time Turkey international was one of Sam Allardyce’s main targets this transfer window. However, reports in Spain suggest the La Liga outfit will only consider a permanent move.

That’s according to Faro de Vigo, who refer to the Daily Mail’s story, but go on to claim that Los Celestes boss Eduardo Coudet would only sanction a sale rather than any temporary loan switch.

This hardly comes as a surprise as the 26-year-old has featured 13 times for Celta Vigo on their way to a respectable ninth-place in the Spanish top-flight, and whilst it remains to be seen what sort of fee Yokusui would command, it could be worth Albion’s time to stump up the funds.

Valued at €10m (£9m) by CIES, the versatile midfielder would be an almost instant upgrade to Big Sam’s current midfield, particularly on Romaine Sawyers, who you’d imagine would be most at risk over any central addition.

He’s struggled to adapt to the considerable step-up in quality since their promotion last term – of regulars in the starting XI (ten or more appearances), only club captain Jake Livermore has managed a worse average rating than Sawyers’ 6.29, per WhoScored.

In terms of central midfield options, the 29-year-old sits last for tackles per game (1.6) and similarly for key passes per game (0.4) – even the rarely-seen Lee Peltier and Filip Krovinovic have managed more than the Baggies academy graduate.

On Tuesday night, he was again pretty anonymous, grading the worst midfielder per SofaScore ratings with a 6.6. Sawyers won only two of his five ground duels, failing to combat the impressive Declan Rice, who pretty much ran the show with 75 touches (20 more than the Baggies man) at the London Stadium.

Sawyers was also dribbled past on two occasions, a recurring theme this campaign as he’s ghosted past an average of 1.5x per match.

A swoop for Yokuslu solves this nightmare. The 6 foot 3 brute is an imposing figure at the base of midfield, and that’s seen him manage an average of three aerial duels won per game over the course of his career.

In addition to that, his mean number of tackles throughout the same timespan is 2.2, which would not just rank him above Sawyers, but also put him second behind Connor Gallagher in the current Albion squad.

As Turkish Football outlined in a scouting report of Yokuslu, he’s a ‘fine physical specimen’ and is a ‘swashbuckling midfielder who likes to get stuck in.’

That seems right up Allardyce’s street, so perhaps it’s no surprise to see him linked with the Turkish titan. If there’s any player that he should push sporting director Luke Dowling to sign, then it’s the Celta Vigo man.

Given the Midlands outfit have leaked the most goals in the top-flight this season, his presence in front of the backline could be everything they need and to make matters even better, he’s capable of playing at centre-back too – it’s a win-win, no matter the cost.

As West Brom’s struggles continue, they will surely live to regret one of their summer decisions…

What was the word?

Back in June, the Express & Star revealed that American left-back Antonee Robinson was one of the Baggies’ top transfer targets and it was claimed that they were willing to pay his £2m release clause.

Two months later, the 23-year-old opted to join Premier League and relegation rivals Fulham in a move that appears to be costing Albion by the week.

One that got away?

West Brom not only have the worst defensive record in the top-flight but also across Europe’s five elite leagues too. Sam Allardyce’s side have leaked a whopping 52 goals from their 22 outings, some 16 more than any other Premier League side.

He’s yet to settle on his first-choice backline, which has been evident in his constant chopping and changing of the full-backs.

Dara O’Shea and Darnell Furlong keep swapping in and out on the right, whilst Big Sam clearly doesn’t trust Gibbs as Conor Townsend has come straight back in on his return from a pretty lengthy layoff.

The story may have been so much different had they landed the bargain signature of Robinson.

Fulham have also struggled, but they haven’t conceded so many goals.

Indeed since December, they have only once conceded more than two goals in one game – by comparison, under Allardyce, the Baggies have leaked five twice, four and three in four of their last five home outings.

The USMNT international has played a key part as he ranks third for overall WhoScored rating (6.97) in Scott Parker’s squad. West Brom’s best full-back has been Townsend (6.81) and then O’Shea (6.42).

Robinson contributes positively at either end of the pitch, which is why he would have been a perfect addition at the Hawthorns as they struggle to score on top of being easily bypassed.

Per WhoScored, the young left-back manages 2.2 tackles per 90 at a success rate of 72.3% as well as 1.7 interceptions per 90, proving to be a hardworking beast off the ball.

Neither Townsend (1.7 tackles, 1.5 interceptions per 90) nor Gibbs (1.7 tackles per 90) can match such returns.

Similarly, Robinson’s 1.4 key passes per 90 is over double what the Baggies duo have achieved thus far in creativity up the pitch.

Indeed, his manager at Fulham, Parker, has already been left impressed by what his new signing has offered this season, saying: “He’s done incredibly well. (He’s) a boy with a big, big heart and a boy with a fearless attitude that embraces and takes things on a daily basis, same as in the games.

“He’s got quality and ability which I think we’re all seeing. (There’s) still loads to improve and loads to learn, but he has a real work ethic about him and a mentality about him that he’s willing to do that.”

The Baggies’ fortunes wouldn’t have been instantly changed had they secured the American in the summer, but certainly, the decision from sporting director Luke Dowling to not bring him in for just £2m is looking worse and worse as each game passes by.

They should have given him everything he was after.
