Glasgow Rangers could’ve signed Ryan Kent’s perfect replacement in Daniel Johnson

Glasgow Rangers may have made a major mistake in the latest transfer window, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

According to Lancashire Live, Steven Gerrard’s side were strongly linked with a move for Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson in the summer.

It’s also suggested that the Light Blues were rebuffed in their advances by Preston, who value him at more than than the £1.5m that was apparently on offer.

For the time being at least, Johnson has stayed at Deepdale for the foreseeable future, but his contract will run out on June 30, 2021. A killer blow for the Ibrox outfit, perhaps.

One that got away?

Despite missing the first four league games due to injury, Johnson has still started the season like a house on fire.

The Jamaican has scored two goals in seven appearances in all competitions so far this season whilst he is averaging one big chance created, 1.2 tackles, and 1 interception per game in the league alone, via SofaScore.

Last season, the 28-year-old bagged 12 times and 7 assists in 33 games in the Championship, as per SofaScore. Putting this into perspective, that’s still a higher goal-to-game ratio than Ryan Kent managed in the Premiership last term.

His versatility would’ve not only made the left-footed midfielder the perfect replacement for Kent, who has been tipped to leave the Ibrox outfit, but also would have given Gerrard another midfield option to provide cover and competition for places with Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Ryan Jack as well.

The absence of a genuine box-to-box midfielder is something the Gers have been lacking for so long – only Aribo and Arfield have scored more than once so far this season – at least, until they brought in Bongani Zungu from French Ligue 2 side Amiens on an initial loan deal with the option to buy.

Former Motherwell star Chris Humphrey once claimed Johnson is “one of the best” he has ever played with, telling reporters “his all-round game is phenomenal.”

It surely can’t get much better than that.

Now valued at £3.6m via Transfermarkt, you can’t help but feel that the Gers will rue not signing the “phenomenal” powerhouse whilst they still had the chance to sign him in the summer.

AND in other news, Glasgow Rangers missed a trick by failing to sign Sekou Gassama as Alfredo Morelos is linked with an exit…

John Stones produced another superb display against Burnley

After a superb performance in midweek against Olympiakos, John Stones was rewarded with a rare Premier League start against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

The former Everton man rewarded Pep Guardiola’s faith in him by producing another dominant display, showing signs that he may well be back to his best in this Manchester City side.

Although it was a comfortable 5-0 win for the Citizens against Sean Dyche’s side, the 26-year-old centre-back was really bested and came out on top in what was a physical battle.

As per SofaScore, the England international earned a 7.6 rating for his display against the Clarets, with only Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez earning higher.

Of the five aerial duels he was involved in during the game, he was able to win 100%, which is even more impressive when you consider the height available in Burnley’s attack, with Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes and Jay Rodriguez all featuring at the Etihad.

Stones, described earlier this year as a “complete defender” by Ivan Cordoba, was also extremely effective with the ball, as he had 108 touches during the game and completed 93/96 passes, resulting in a superb pass accuracy rate of 97%.

He was also accurate with all six of his long balls during the game and he also lost possession on just three occasions, resulting in a superb all-round display from the defender.

Following the game in midweek, Guardiola was extremely complimentary of Stones, saying:

“We only conceded one shot on target. I know it looks easy when it happens but it’s not because of the quality of the players they are. Unfortunately, we could only score one goal but the team is alive.

“They made long balls and our central defenders were outstanding.

“A big compliment for John Stones because it is not easy after a long time and with Ruben alongside they make an incredible couple. I’m especially happy for him but everyone was so committed and we attacked with more desire to shoot, to score. Now we recover as [quickly] as possible and start focusing on the Premier League.” (per Manchester Evening News)

Therefore, after another superb display against Burnley, it perhaps wouldn’t be a surprise to see Stones continue to keep his place alongside Ruben Dias in the City defence for future matches.

And, in other news… Man City must secure £63m-rated “complete” striker loved by Messi

West Brom should look to offload Hal Robson-Kanu next month

West Brom have a lot of decisions to make ahead of the January transfer window otherwise they truly risk their place in the Premier League.

Finances are tight, so incomings may be scarce but perhaps funds can be raised through sales of many of Slaven Bilic’s fringe players. You’d imagine Charlie Austin and Kamil Grosicki will be the first two out the door.

But perhaps there is some value left in Hal Robson-Kanu, who is just not favoured in the Premier League by the Croatian. The two-time Championship promotion winner would surely attract some interest given his experience.

The versatile 31-year-old forward hasn’t started a single game in the top-flight and despite being fit was snubbed entirely from the matchday squad as the Baggies were thrashed 5-1 by Crystal Palace.

Indeed, Robson-Kanu has featured in the Carabao Cup as captain, scoring three goals in two matches, but both outings were against lower-league opposition, which only goes to show that he may well be out of his depth in the Premier League at this point.

According to Spotrac, the Welshman is among the highest-earners at the Hawthorns, bringing home a tidy £30k-per-week, which is more than Grady Diangana (£20k-per-week), Kyle Bartley (£13.5k-per-week) and Romaine Sawyers (£12.5k-per-week).

All of those three have started and featured more than Robson-Kanu.

Therefore, it only seems like a wise decision to look to offload him in January as he’s merely bleeding Guochuan Lai’s pockets dry by not playing, and it’s not as if the Chinese businessman will be prepared to invest much more in terms of a transfer kitty.

WBA legend Kevin Phillips hailed the veteran’s impact during their promotion run-in, he told the Express & Star: “Hal Robson-Kanu has really performed. He has always been an exciting player, I’ve always liked his work ethic and his hold-up play. But this season he has added the goals that perhaps in previous seasons he hasn’t.”

That’s merely a thing of the past now though as Albion face a desperate battle to survive in the top-flight. Robson-Kanu could well take a bit off the wage bill and every little bit will help.

AND in other news, West Brom must take a risk on prolific EFL marksman who scores once every 75 minutes…

Além do estadual, disputou a Libertadores, o Brasileirão e a Copa do Brasil.

Exclusive: Newcastle “will be interested” in Tottenham’s Harry Winks, claims Rob Lee

Former England international Rob Lee, while speaking exclusively with FootballFanCast, has claimed Newcastle United will be interested in a January loan deal for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks.

Winks has grown disgruntled at being a bit-part player in north London this season and is ready to discuss a loan move away from the club with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, fearing a lack of game time will hinder his chances of being named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Jose Mourinho has rarely trusted the 24-year-old with occupying a regular role in his plans so far this term, with Winks starting just three Premier League fixtures and not playing a single minute since October.

Mourinho would not have named Winks in his 18-man matchday squad for last weekend’s north London Derby had it not been for a late injury to Tanguy Ndombele, which marked the Spurs product’s return to the fold for only the second time since facing West Ham United.

Winks may be denied a move away from Tottenham in the upcoming window with Levy more inclined to sanction a winter exit for Dele Alli, who has similarly been shunned this season, making eight outings across all competitions.

Everton have been linked with a potential bid to sign Winks on loan in January should he leave Spurs, though Lee – who made 267 Premier League appearances for Newcastle – believes his former side will also be keen.

“Harry Winks is a good player, very good player. Because [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg has come in, where do you play him? That’s the problem,” Lee told FootballFanCast.

“He seems to like Hojbjerg and [Moussa] Sissoko’s done very well; he’s that sort of player where he’s big, strong, he works, got a great engine and they seem to work well together.

“So, there’s no room really for Harry Winks to play. But if Spurs want to get rid of him for a little while, then I’m sure Newcastle will be interested in him because he’s a top player.”

Newcastle were linked with a move to sign Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka last winter amid doubt over his long-term future at the Emirates, after the Switzerland international swore at his own supporters whilst they jeered his substitution and threw the captain’s armband to the ground.

Xhaka bounced back following a change in manager at the north London side, with Mikel Arteta offering the 28-year-old a new lease of life and minutes in all but four of his 31 Premier League fixtures at the helm to date.

Winks is yet to be offered an olive branch by Mourinho at Tottenham and may urge Levy to sanction a move in January, opening the door for Bruce to strike amid claims the Newcastle boss will be active in the loan market and suggestions he will target a box-to-box midfielder.

Whether or not Bruce targets Winks remains to be seen, though in doing so he could acquire an eight-cap England international desperate to prove himself to Southgate.

AND in other news, Mike Ashley’s January transfer stance could see Newcastle miss out on a £30m gem compared to Alan Shearer.
