Manchester United fans react to Solskjaer comments on Mason Greenwood

[ad_pod ]

For first-team stars, pre-season is usually just a way of building up fitness ahead of the start of the new campaign. But for new signings and young players alike, it can be the difference in whether you’re involved or not in the conversation for the opening game.

And in the case of Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood, it appears he really has taken his chance. Despite it only being the second game of their pre-season, the 17-year-old has earned rave reviews for his performances and it appears Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken notice.

After scoring in the 4-0 win over Leeds, the United boss admitted that Greenwood had a “chance” to start against Chelsea for the first Premier League game of the season and that he was “more than capable” to do so.

Having heard that the academy product was in line for a huge opportunity, United fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter and many were rather excited by the prospect.

Red Devils supporters revealed their delight at potentially seeing Greenwood feature against the Blues and thought including him in the starting line-up would give them a devastating attack.

Others however were slightly more reluctant to get carried away and instead urged caution about Solskjaer’s words, saying that more experienced stars could well come back in.

Manchester United’s decision to hand David De Gea a new contract slammed by pundit

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has slammed Manchester United’s reported decision to hand David De Gea a new contract this summer.

What did he say?

Reports have suggested that the Spain international has agreed a new six-year deal with the Red Devils worth around £375k-a-week, thus making him the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper.

After hearing of United’s supposed decision, Jordan questioned how De Gea’s underwhelming campaign last season warranted him being given a bumper new contract.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

He said: “This is a lack of football savvy, this is laziness. If you look at De Gea’s performances, he’s in decline. He made only saved 69 per cent of the shots he faced last season, which puts him in the bottom-half of the Premier League goalkeepers. He’s in an average team, sure, but there are averages teams that have goalkeepers who are performing at a better level.

“I think Woodward is being lazy and would rather say, ‘I’ll do something with other people’s money’. I’m not saying De Gea is in full decline, but what I am saying, when you look at the statistics, is where else do you get a reward for going backwards?”

Saving face

In any other season, David De Gea being made the world’s highest-paid goalkeeper would have been met with universal nods of approval. The Spaniard has been the model of consistency in his time in the Premier League and has undeniably been one of the best in the world.

But last season saw him endure a disappointing campaign, that really began with Spain’s poor showing at the World Cup in Russia last summer. The 28-year-old’s four errors leading to goals in the top-flight made up almost half of the ten he has suffered in total in his Premier League career.

Handing him a new contract this summer feels a little like United trying to save face and restore some pride. The club are in the midst of a transfer window where Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku want out, and deals for top targets like Harry Maguire and Sean Longstaff are still some way from being completed.

Whilst describing it as simply “lazy” as Jordan suggests is a little perplexing, United’s decision on De Gea’s contract certainly feels a lot like a salvage effort in what has been a relatively disappointing summer thus far.

Premier League Transfer Roundup: Pepe news, Liverpool sign Elliott, Everton in Kean talks

[ad_pod ]

There are just 11 days, and counting, before the Premier League transfer window slams shut on August 8th. There is still time for the country’s top clubs to complete their transfer business, but they need to start getting a move on. Today’s Premier League transfer roundup is made up of Arsenal’s pursuit of Nicolas Pepe, Harvey Elliott’s switch to Liverpool and Everton’s talks for Moise Kean.

Arsenal agree Pepe fee

Report: It is understood that Arsenal have agreed a fee with Lille in regards to the purchase of Nicolas Pepe. The Gunners will pay £72m in instalments for the Ivory Coast international, with the deal expected to be completed by Wednesday.

Verdict: Considering Unai Emery is said to have just £45m to spend this summer, this comes as a surprise to say the least. If the deal goes through, it will be the joint-fourth highest fee ever paid by a Premier League club. Whilst it does come out of the blue, it would be a great move in an attacking sense for the Gunners and complete a potent trio with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Between them, they contributed directly to 105 goals last season.

However, Arsenal are in need of some defensive reinforcements – in the past campaign’s top 10, only Manchester United and West Ham conceded more than the 51 they shipped. Whilst William Saliba has been brought in, he will go straight back to Saint-Etienne on loan until next summer so, as it stands, there are no new faces in their backline.

How likely is the deal? 9/10

Liverpool sign Elliott

Report: Harvey Elliott has completed a move to Liverpool from Fulham. The 16-year-old has not yet turned professional as he needs to be 17 to do so, but he has already made his first appearance for the club in the Reds’ 3-0 loss against Napoli on Sunday.

Verdict: Just like the signing of Sepp van den Berg earlier in the transfer window, the capture of Elliott is one for the future. The teenager’s career is only just starting, but he is already a record-breaker – he became the youngest Premier League player in history when he made his top-tier debut for Fulham last season. Former teammate Tom Cairney said that Elliott has the skill to  “wow” people, so he is clearly a decent prospect. He is also an England youth international having scored twice in five matches for the U17s. Whilst we are unlikely to see too much of him this season, he is one to keep an ear out for.

How likely is the deal? Completed

Everton in Kean talks

Report: According to Sky Sports, Everton are in talks with Juventus in regards to the purchase of Moise Kean. Ademola Lookman has recently left Goodison Park to move to RB Leipzig and, as such, the Toffees see Kean as the perfect replacement.

Verdict: Kean is one Europe’s brightest young talents, and has already made an impression at Juventus by scoring eight goals in 21 appearances for the Old Lady. His performances for the Serie A champions have even earned him three caps for Italy, in which he netted twice. Even at just 19 years of age, the 2019 Golden boy nominee knows where the back of the net is, which is why Everton are interested in him.

Of the two out-and-out strikers at Marco Silva’s disposal last season, Dominic Calvert-Lewin bagged eight and Cenk Tosun four. And, having not even turned 20, he still has plenty of time in front of him to hone his skills. For £36m, it is a transfer that makes sense, although Juve’s insistence on a buy-back clause will be a slight cause for concern.

How likely is the deal? 7/10

Newcastle should steer well clear of "inconsistent" Francois Kamano

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Newcastle have the chance to sign Francois Kamano, according to reports in France, but he looks an awful lot like another young winger who recently flopped on Tyneside.

What’s the story?

According to L’Equipe, via GFFN, “a path is open” for Kamano to move from Bordeaux to Newcastle.

The report claims the Ligue 1 outfit want to sell as quickly as possible, and that he is available for just €15m (£13.9m).

French side AS Monaco and Italian outfit Genoa are also interested.

[ad_pod ]

Kenedy 2.0?

Kamano clearly has talent – the 23 year-old scored ten times in Ligue 1 last term, after finding the net eight and six times in the two previous seasons respectively.

Clearly then, he is improving, and his excellent mixture of speed and dribbling, along with his ability to play on both flanks, could make him a good option to have on the bench behind Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin.

However, Whoscored list his defensive contribution as “weak”, while he also grabbed just two league goals after the turn of the year last season. BT Sport Ligue 1 commentator David Crossan says the “inconsistent” Guinean lost his way in the second half of the campaign.

So, a speedy young winger with good natural ability, consistency issues and a poor defensive work rate – starting to sound like anyone familiar?

After 18 months on loan on Tyneside, Kenedy looks to be heading to Reading for the season. The winger was inconsistent, struggled to match his end product to his ability, and didn’t track back nearly enough.

With Saint-Maximin and Almiron surely the intended starters on the flanks and Mike Ashley notorious for not spending massive amounts in the transfer market, signing another Kenedy for £13.9m is surely the last thing the Magpies need to do on transfer deadline day.

Crystal Palace’s extravagant spending appears to have caught up with them

[ad_pod ]

Admittedly, none of us like to think of our football clubs as businesses.

We just want to see them spend bundles of cash on exciting new players, make tickets affordable for the supporters and to go and watch an entertaining game of football every now and again.

The sad truth is that, not matter how much we try to bury our heads in the sands, football clubs are businesses.

And in Crystal Palace’s case, one that is being run poorly in terms of transfer activity.

If you hold the Eagles close to your heart, you will have noticed that the level of transfer activity appears to be on a gradual decline.

The added bonus of Premier League money eases the pressure on raising funds via player sales, but it’s still important to maintain a balance in terms of players moving in and out of the club.

In Palace’s case, since being promoted via the playoffs in 2013, they have been fairly gung ho in their approach to bringing players in, but have been unable to balance the books by offloading anyone of significant value.

The graphic above shows that, with the exception of the most recent transfer window, money earned from player sales has only exceeded that spent on incoming signings on one occasion – during the 2012/13 campaign.

That was the season in which the Eagles were still in the Championship and were signing the likes of Joel Ward and Yannick Bolasie for just over £500k each, whilst making an initial £10.58m through the sale of Wilfried Zaha to Manchester United.

Since then, however, the spending has been fairly ludicrous when contrasted with the amount brought into the club through sales.

The following campaign, £29.7m was spent on new arrivals, whilst nothing was made from outgoings.

Since the 2013/14 season, and again excluding the most recent window, Palace have spent a whopping £199.92m on signings, and have seen just £55.64m come into the bank account via sales.

Across the last two campaigns, the spending has been restricted in comparison to the years before.

Palace have spent just £17.51m in the market across the last two years, seemingly as in a bid to balance the books.

That would explain the more considered approach to transfer dealings in the last couple of years, where Dougie Freedman has negotiated cheap captures such as Vicente Guaita, Max Meyer and Gary Cahill on free transfers, and James McCarthy for just £3m, as opposed to £28.08m on Christian Benteke and £25.38m on Mamadou Sakho.

For any Palace fans wondering why their club used to spend such significant sums on the likes of Benteke and Sakho only to see that spending halted, there appears to be a logical answer.

With such an unhealthy pattern of spending over the last seven years, this worrying trend was always going to catch up with the south Londoners further down the line.
