Tottenham’s new signing Gedson Fernandes calls Spurs’ stadium "unbelievable"

Tottenham Hotspur announced the signing of Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal on Wednesday morning, and his first interview was quickly published on the official club website.

Spurs confirmed the arrival of the 21-year-old until the end of the 2020/21 campaign, when there will be an option to make the move permanent, and he will wear the number 30 shirt in north London.

Tottenham are of course in their first full season in their amazing new stadium, and the young Portuguese player was clearly taken aback having encountered it for the first time.

He told tottenhamhotspur.com: “I have no words to say about the stadium. I’ve never seen anything like this – it’s unbelievable!”

Given he has struggled for first-team football at Benfica so far in 2019/20 following injury and generally not being a starting XI regular – he has played just 630 minutes this term – it will be interesting to see where he fits in under Jose Mourinho.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Spurs certainly have their fair share of central midfield injury issues right now with Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele both absent, and perhaps there could be an early opportunity for Fernandes in that area of the pitch.

Otherwise, he may well be competing with the likes of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela in the more attacking roles in Mourinho’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system, which will be no easy task.

Sunderland are interested in a loan move for Rangers’ Greg Docherty

Sunderland are looking to strengthen in the January transfer window with the addition of Rangers’ Greg Docherty on loan, according to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.

What’s the word?

Steven Gerrard has admitted there will likely be departures at Ibrox this month and mentioned Docherty as one of those who could depart, due to his desire for game time.

The Northern Echo also suggest that Charlton have taken an interest in the midfielder which could make things difficult for the Black Cats, as the Scot may want to test himself at a higher level having spent last season on loan in League One with Shrewsbury.

The proposed deal could see Docherty move on loan for the rest of the season but with two-and-a-half years left on his contract it is unclear if Rangers are keen for him to move on a permanent basis.

Midfield goal threat

Phil Parkinson has organised his team effectively and seems to have found a winning formula in recent weeks, but he will still likely be keen to address the issues that have affected his attack at times.

Under Parkinson the Black Cats have scored 24 goals in 18 games, with their return of 35 goals in 24 league games the third-lowest of any team in the League One top ten.

It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

One problem the team has is the dependence on the front-three to find the net, with Charlie Wyke, Chris Maguire and Lynden Gooch contributing a combined total of 21 goals this term.

George Dobson and Max Power, for example, have just three goals between them from central midfield, but the addition of Docherty could address that concern.

In the last campaign he managed 10 goals and 11 assists for the Shrews, highlighting the attacking threat he possesses, and if he uses a loan spell to impress Gerrard then Sunderland could reap the rewards.

His Rangers manager labelled his attitude and professionalism as “magnificent”, too, which is another attribute that should serve Parkinson’s side well as they bid to stretch their six-game unbeaten run and move towards the automatic promotion places.

In other transfer news, Sunderland have also targeted another loan move as they look to boost a key area in the squad.

Analysing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ transfer target: Jarrod Bowen vs Raul Jimenez

According to The Athletic’s Tim Spiers, Wolverhampton Wanderers are big admirers of Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen and could look at him as one of the options to strengthen their attack in the near future.

The same source claims it would take a bid around £20m to land the young forward.

Call yourself a Wolves expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Of course, even though he is currently playing his football down in the Championship, Bowen has regularly been linked with Premier League clubs with the likes of Newcastle United, West Brom and even Tottenham Hotspur reported admirers.

However, looking at the player, it’s difficult to escape the feeling that he would be a fantastic addition to Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad and could even offer a similar level of attacking output to Raul Jimenez.

Of course, comparing the two like for like overlooks the fact Bowen is still in the Championship while Jimenez is thriving in the elite tier of English football. The difference in minutes played this season is also relatively significant as well.

But overall, it is a good way of actually seeing whether Bowen has the quality necessary to compete on a higher platform, and by analysing his figures in the ongoing 2019/20 season, he passes the test with flying colours.

It has to be noted, however, that all stats were taken before the weekend’s games.

Bowen’s goal contribution is simply astonishing as he boasts 16 strikes and six assists as well, edging out Jimenez’s eight and six respectively.

But what could prove vital for Wolves is the creativity and versatility in his approach. According to Transfermarkt, despite primarily being used as a right-winger in the ongoing campaign, the 23-year-old has also been deployed as a centre-forward and a second-striker.

This means that he could not only be a back-up option for Adama Traore out wide but also for Jimenez through the middle channels as well.

We can also see that he’s quite creative with 1.8 dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game that can go toe to toe with Wolves’ frontman’s 1.7 and 1.6 respectively.

If Nuno wants to add another layer of quality and potential into his attack, Bowen is the perfect solution.

At £20m, he could be a financially appealing option in the context of the modern market.

Aston Villa show they’ve learned their lesson with Serhou Guirassy pursuit

Aston Villa are showing an interest in signing Amiens striker Serhou Guirassy, according to The Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

The 23-year-old is also said to be someone that Leicester City, among other Premier League clubs, are considering making a move for during the January transfer window.

It seems as though Villa are one of the teams with a more serious interest in the Frenchman, with Wesley’s season-ending injury, sustained against Burnley, being cited as a reason for that.

There is no mention in the article that any move for the striker would be impacted by the transfer of Genk striker Mbwana Samatta.

Lesson learned

If Villa were to make a move for both of these players, it would show that they have learned a very important lesson from their short time back in the Premier League: you can’t rely on one striker.

Aside from Wesley, Jonathan Kodjia was their main striker option, though the fact that he has been allowed to leave, joining Qatari side Al-Gharafa, shows that he is surplus to requirements.

The poor position this leaves them in is best summarised by the fact that Villa have been playing without a recognised striker in their team, as was the case when they drew 1-1 against Brighton & Hove Albion, with Anwar El Ghazi playing as the central frontman.

It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

Considering Villa currently sit in the bottom three with the second-worst defence in the league, they are relying on their attackers getting goals, which would definitely benefit from having actual strikers in the team.

If Smith lands Guirassy, who has four goals from 16 Ligue 1 games and Samatta, who has 10 goals in 26 across the Jupiler League and Champions League, it is undoubted that he would be in a better position than having a winger and 18-year-old Indiana Vassilev as his options.

Meanwhile, one Villa January transfer target has received glowing endorsements.

Man Utd fans react to latest twist in pursuit of Bournemouth striker Josh King

So the deadline day saga surrounding Bournemouth’s Josh King has just taken yet another twist.

Reports have claimed Manchester United were very much interested in bringing the Norway international back to Old Trafford before the close of play on Friday.

Indeed, it was even suggested King himself wanted a move, and that United had seen their first bid of £20m turned down by the Cherries as they looked to keep hold of one of their prized assets.

But now, according to Sky Sports, the Red Devils have cooled their interest in the forward and have moved on to other options.

After hearing about the fresh update on their pursuit of King, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation, with many expressing their relief that they may not be signing the Norwegian after all.

A couple of fans however took the opportunity to insist that signing a new striker is still a necessity, with one supporter in particular urging them to do some late business with time running out.

Whilst some United fans appear to be thankful that they may be swerving on King, surely the Bournemouth man would be better than absolutely no-one?

Calling all transfer experts! Can you get all 15 questions right on our Deadline Day quiz?

He has plenty of Premier League experience by playing for the Cherries in recent seasons, and that means he could have hit the ground running upon arriving at Old Trafford. Perhaps the Red Devils have something else up their sleeves.

West Brom fans slam Oliver Burke for his poor form at Alaves

West Brom supporters have been discussing winger Oliver Burke this week after a fan account posted the latest on his form so far.

The Scotsman is currently out on loan at La Liga outfit Alaves, who sit 15th, six points from the bottom three.

He has racked up 17 appearances for Basque-based side, although just five have been starts, per Transfermarkt. In that run, the 22-year-old has only managed one assist and is yet to contribute on the scoresheet.

This has unsurprisingly led to several members of the Hawthorns faithful slamming him ahead of a potential reunion this summer as his contract doesn’t expire until 2022.

Here’s what has been said:

Some supporters couldn’t contain their laughter at his measly returns in Spain while one brandished him the “biggest waste of money” the club have ever paid and are likely to pay.

Another hoped that they would buy him this summer, so the club-record flop doesn’t have to return to the west Midlands.

Burke cost the club £15m back in 2017 from RB Leipzig, becoming the most expensive Scottish player ever.

One member of the Baggies faithful blasted him for being a “waster” while a further fan said it was a sad turn of events given the potential he arrived with over two years ago.

Others then made comparisons about his current ability…

A tongue in cheek comment from one fan suggested that they wouldn’t even want Burke back as a ball boy whilst another pondered whether he would be good enough for a League One outfit, rather than a promotion-chasing Championship side like West Brom.

Where is he from?! Can you name which obscure countries these famous players have represented?

There was even some optimism that they could get some sort of fee for him with £3-4m a figure they could expect.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk provides update on Steven Fletcher’s injury

Sheffield Wednesday may have edged closer to seeing their top goalscorer return from injury after an encouraging update was dished out by Owls boss Garry Monk on Thursday afternoon.

What’s he said?

The south Yorkshiremen have been without the services of 12-goal frontman Steven Fletcher since he was stretchered off against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup last month.

Initial fears suggested that the 32-year-old would be absent for eight to ten weeks, but that timeframe could be less than first thought following Monk’s latest comments.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, the Wednesday chief provided an eight-word update on his progress, he said:

March return

This comes as a major boost to their season prospects as they have suffered without him since he picked up that nasty-looking knee injury down on the south coast.

The Owls won just one of their last four league games whilst no other player in the squad has surpassed a quarter of his total with winger Jacob Murphy currently sat on four goals for the season.

Monk has made measures to bolster his side with key attacking additions in the January transfer window as Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham and Parma forward Alessio Da Cruz have joined on loan.

But they have big boots to fill and can’t be entirely relied on to repeat Fletcher’s exploits this campaign.

With him due back potentially earlier than expected, the Owls could make a late run at the playoffs, having slipped out of them recently.

James Pearce says Timo Werner is a more likely option than Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho will leave Borussia Dortmund this summer. That is according to Sky Germany reporter Jesco von Eichmann. And, according to The Daily Mail, Liverpool have already made it clear to Die Schwarzgelben of their desire to make a move for the 19-year-old. They also add that Manchester City are also expected to make a bid, whilst Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United are all interested.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

Now, James Pearce has been asked on Twitter what his take on the news is. He has said that he would be “very surprised” if that were the case, and that Timo Werner would be a “cheaper and more likely option”.

In that Daily Mail report, it says that BVB are expected to demand at least £100m for their winger’s services which, of course, is a substantial amount of money. Werner, meanwhile, would cost between €55m-€60m (£45.8m-£50m) due to a release clause in his contract – but the Reds are said to have only until April to activate it.

Man Utd fans fuming with Marcus Rashford injury update

So things appear to have gone from bad to worse on the Marcus Rashford front.

The England international suffered an injury in the FA Cup clash against Wolves earlier this year, and was initially ruled out for at least six weeks with a stress fracture.

But now, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has delivered a far more worrying prognosis of his forward’s injury, suggesting that it is now “touch and go” whether Rashford will return before the end of the season.

Watch Manchester United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

After hearing about the Norwegian’s update on the academy product, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

A couple of fans criticised the fact that Rashford’s injury problems stemmed from Solskjaer using him in the cup game against Wolves.

Another couple of supporters took aim at the “atrocious management”, with one fan in particular slamming the fact that they over-played the forward.

Just as Ian Wright remarked in the aftermath of Rashford’s injury, Solskjaer certainly has to take part of the blame for the way things have panned out.

The Arsenal legend said that the United manager had put himself before Rashford’s health in an attempt to get some positive results for the club.

Separating the fairweathers from real fans: How much can you remember about United’s treble season?

And now, with the Englishman facing the prospect of not playing again this campaign, Solskjaer will have to look himself in the mirror and wonder whether the short-term gain is worth the long-term pain.

Meanwhile, Man Utd fans react to this transfer target’s Champions League display.

Spurs fans hammer Japhet Tanganga for Wolves loss

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a third straight defeat in all competition on Sunday afternoon, putting their chances of qualifying for the Champions League at serious risk.

Jose Mourinho’s side were beaten by Wolves in a five-goal thriller after Raul Jimenez’s slotted finish in the 73rd minute sealed all three points for the visitors.

And Spurs fans have been gunning for young centre-back Japhet Tangana as they believe he had a big part to play in their downfall.

The academy graduate was selected alongside Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez in defence at the expense of Belgian duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

Here’s what has been said…

One supporter questioned Tanganga’s display and claimed that no one will criticise him because he’s young and English whilst others blasted him for being “really poor” and having a “stinker”.

There were also more general reactions to the 20-year-old but they were far from glowing either.

He was described as being “shocking” as well “abysmal.”

Tanganga picked up the second lowest rating of any starter in the match as per SofaScore, who also state that he was dribbled past three times, committed two fouls and won just 50% of his duels both on the ground and aerially.

This has led to some claiming that the centre-back had a “right mare” and that his showing was a “disasterclass.”

Others were left debating the impact of players around him – one suggested that Tanganga was better than Ben Davies at left-back whilst another believed Dier had a better game at the back.

He was even lambasted for being “out of his depth” against Wolves’ lethal frontline.
