Tottenham fans react to Kamano links

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to a surprising transfer rumour, as reports claim they are interested in Bordeaux attacker Francois Kamano.

According to reports, Tottenham, West Ham and Everton are all eying the winger who has scored five times in seven Ligue 1 games this season.

The report claims several Premier League teams are interested in the electric young winger, but that those three in particular are monitoring him closely.

The links are surprising for several reasons, not the least of which is that the last two young attackers signed from Ligue 1 were Clinton N’Jie and Georges-Kévin N’Koudou, both of whom were flops.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”301408″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus Chelsea v Liverpool”]

Kamano has certainly started the season in red-hot form, scoring five in seven and terrorising Ligue 1 right backs with his pace and skill.

His rip-roaring runs down the left wing usually end with him cutting inside on to his right foot to shoot, as he averages a whopping 3.4 shots per game this season.

Tottenham are already blessed with plenty of options on the wings though, and what they really need is a new back-up striker and a new central midfielder.

Lots of fans have been giving their verdict on the links, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Leave in January: The writing should be on the wall for these two Arsenal players

Unai Emery has got Arsenal playing brilliantly, and that’s just what the Gunners needed. After a few poor years under Arsene Wenger, and an admittedly tough start to life under Emery, the Spaniard has got things right.

They had a tremendous September, and if that’s anything to go by, October will be a stellar month too.

However, off in the distance is the month of January – and a few changes could come to the Emirates then. Emery has already made it pretty clear who he fancies within his team, whilst the performances of a few individuals do hint towards what the Arsenal squad could look like in a few months.

Ahead of the January transfer window, then, it’s fair to say that a few major changes could be coming to the club, and the writing should really be on the wall for these TWO Arsenal players…

Danny Welbeck

Rarely has Danny Welbeck been a starter at Arsenal and, indeed, at Man Utd prior to his London move too. The Englishman is a solid talent, but he’s never been exceptional for a sustained period of time – and that clearly has not impressed Unai Emery.

Yet to make a single league start this season, Welbeck is coming off the back of a World Cup in which he wasn’t given a chance and a season in which he was underwhelming at best.

In truth, Arsenal just seem a cut above the Englishman’s quality, and with Emery looking to improve the Gunners, players like him should undeniably be moved on.

Granit Xhaka

Soccer Football – World Cup – Round of 16 – Sweden vs Switzerland – Saint Petersburg Stadium, Saint Petersburg, Russia – July 3, 2018 Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka looks dejected after the match REUTERS/Henry Romero

Since moving to Arsenal, Granit Xhaka has been a regular at the club. All the while, though, he’s continually struggled to perform on a consistent basis – with poor form the source of much frustration among Arsenal fans.

Despite that, though, he’s continued to play regularly – but could that change this season?

He’s certainly got more competition this term, given the arrival of Lucas Torreira, a player that so far has done everything that Xhaka has – he’s just done it better.

Torreira is younger, he’s more mobile and he’s more consistent, and that spells bad news for the Swiss midfielder.

The apparently impending departure of Aaron Ramsey could give Xhaka a lifeline, but if he doesn’t improve, a sale makes sense for Arsenal in January.

Everton continued their winning ways on Saturday with a superb away performance at Leicester, and Gylfi Sigurdsson was once again the star of the show.

Of all the infuriating things that happened at Goodison Park last season, seeing Sigurdsson stuck on the wing was right up there.

The Icelandic international is immensely talented, but he simply doesn’t have the athleticism to function as a wide player.

Marco Silva clearly knows that too, as the new Everton boss has given Sigurdsson the freedom to roam about in the No.10 position.

While fans are all enamoured by some brilliant performances from the likes of Bernard and Lucas Digne, Sigurdsson has been on fire in recent weeks, scoring four times in his last four Premier League appearances.

The 29-year-old fired in four shots at Leicester, three of which were on target, including his incredible long-range strike to win the contest for the Toffees.

He showed his creative influence once again as well, creating four chances with key passes as well as whipping in a remarkable 13 crosses, four of which were successful.

Silva demands a lot from his players at the other end as well though, and Sigurdsson has bought right into the new manager’s style as he made one tackle, two interceptions and three clearances at the King Power stadium.

Ronald Koeman’s big summer spending spree came under plenty of criticism, but Sigurdsson is now far and away the Toffees’ best player, and might even be next in line for the armband if Tom Davies loses his place.

So, Everton fans, how impressed were you by Sigurdsson on Saturday? How good can he become under Silva? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Rangers keen on bringing former defender Halkett back from Livingston

[ad_pod ]

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen on a move to sign Craig Halkett from Livingston, according to Football Insider.

What’s the word?

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have caught the eye this season with their fine performances but there is still work to be done at Ibrox, where the club are eyeing further defensive additions to aid their planned rise to the top.

FootballInsider names Rangers amongst the clubs vying for the services of Livingston defender Craig Halkett, who has been watched by Championship sides and could be available in January as his contract comes to a close at the end of the season.

An academy graduate of Rangers’, Halkett was allowed to leave in 2016 to join Livingston but Gerrard is considering a move to bring the 23-year-old former Scotland U19 international back to the club.

A wise move?

Gerrard’s hunt for defensive reinforcements comes with Rangers’ having conceded eight goals in as many games, the worst defensive record in the top-eight, while they have kept just two clean sheets from those fixtures.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”301458″ player=”12034″ title=”The Problem With Paul Pogba”]

Livingston captain Halkett was a standout performer in his side’s 1-0 victory over Rangers last week, where Gerrard will have been keeping a close eye on the defender’s performance, and the fact he has previous links to the club makes him an ideal recruit.

With his contract also due to come to a close at the end of the season, Halkett is also an affordable target for Rangers and one that will improve the competitiveness amongst the club’s back-line.

Spurs should look to strengthen squad with addition of £40.5m-rated former Premier League man

For Spurs, the upcoming January transfer window could well represent one of the biggest ones in quite some time.

A lack of signings in the summer sent a lot of Spurs fans into panic, and with a selection of their squad already beginning to look tired, it might well be vital that Mauricio Pochettino goes out and strengthens his squad in the winter.

There is plenty of talent out there who might well fancy the move to London, with the chance of playing at a new stadium and with an exciting young team something which could have a lot of draw.

Indeed, one player we at the Transfer Tavern think would be a superb addition is former Man United flop Memphis Depay, who has seriously found his feet in France during a spell with Lyon.

19 goals last season for the £40.5m-rated winger really enhanced his reputation further, and he would surely love another crack at the English game to show everyone that he should not simply be remembered for a poor spell at Old Trafford.

Depay has made himself one of the most sought after names in Europe now, and still only 24-years-old, it’s not like he still doesn’t have any time on his side in order to develop even further.

The Dutchman is a different player to that we saw previously in the Premier League, and he would enhance and improve a Spurs squad which is desperately lacking in depth.

Spurs fans, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know in the comments!

Success on the continent could prove costly for Rangers

Under Steven Gerrard, Rangers have already improved massively and currently sit fifth in the table, five points off Hearts at the top.

Over the summer, Rangers signed a raft of new players in order to try and halt Celtic’s dominance. Their city rivals could make it 10 consecutive titles if they win this season and Gerrard would become an instant hero at the club if he won the league over Celtic.

Impressively, Gerrard guided through a tough European Qualifying campaign in Europe to then hold Villareal to a 2-2 draw away from home. Rangers followed that up by beating Rapid Wien in their second game thanks to goals from two of the club’s star players, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos.

Both players have been outstanding so far this season, and if they can continue to perform,  in Europe they’re only going to grab more attention from clubs which could lead them to leave the club according to Liverpool legend Kenny Daglish.

The Breakdown

Celtic’s scouting over the last few years has been outstanding and due to their relative success in Europe, the likes of Victor Wanyama, Virgil Van Dijk and Fraser Forster have all earned big moves to the Premier League.

Success in Europe is a double-edged sword. Holding teams like Villareal to a draw builds success and momentum but it also showcases the squad’s talent.

If Rangers continue to win abroad and pull off impressive wins, the likes of Morelos and Tavernier may well be heading down south sooner rather than later.

Barry Douglas return is exactly what Leeds need

Leeds made a terrific start to the season as under Marcelo Bielsa, United made a superb start and for the first few weeks, they blew away their opponents with Bielsa’s brand of attacking football.

Since losing to Birmingham City, however, Leeds have found it hard to find form and since that loss, Leeds have only won two of their subsequent six games in the league. A huge factor in United’s drop in form was due to a host of injuries at the club. Bielsa had to deal with losing Kemar Roofe, Pablo Hernandez and Gaetano Berardi.

In recent weeks, he also lost star defender Barry Douglas. However, in what will come as a relief considering the club’s lack of fullbacks, Douglas managed to get through his run out with the under-23s unscathed and could return for the club.

The Breakdown

Douglas joined the club over the summer in what came as a huge surprise considering how essential he had been with Wolves during their promotion campaign. The 29-year-old immediately filled a void at Leeds and so far he’s been a key player in Leed’s rise to the top of the table.

The former Wolves man has already grabbed three assists in the league and in tandem with Allioski, he’s formed a dynamic left side.

In his absence, Bielsa has struggled to replicate his impact and has opted to play Stuart Dallas. Despite playing in the under-23s match, this weekend’s game may be too early for Douglas to start but having him back in contention is great news for Leeds.

Newcastle fans on Twitter lavish praise on Saturday star Perez

On Saturday, Ayoze Perez became the first man to score a match-winning goal for Ayoze Perez this season. The Spanish second-striker scored a lovely headed goal to give The Magpies a 1-0 win over Watford and the fans are relieved with the win as they’ve eased their relegation fears.

Perez scored some massive goals for the club last season and it looks like this season is no different, with his first strike of the campaign being one that delivers The Magpies with their first three points. The Spanish striker has come under heavy fire from his own supporters this season for his lack of form and misfirings, but no one was going to slate him after Saturday and now they’ll be keen to build on the positive atmosphere.

The next game that The Magpies face is a mouth-watering clash against Bournemouth at home. The Cherries will be looking bounce back from defeat against Manchester United, although with Rafa Benitez side now unbeaten in two, the aim will be to continue their form and make it seven points from three as they look to climb the table and get away from the danger zone, and there’s no doubting that Perez will be key in ensuring that happens.

You can read The Geordies’ messages for Perez after the Watford winner here:

The Magpies will be hoping Perez can pop up with a few more match-winning goals this season and have faith in him to deliver when it matters.

Tottenham fans are so wrong: Victor Wanyama exit rumours aren’t as ridiculous as they seem

Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in recent times after seeing their team get back to winning ways in the Premier League over the weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with newly-promoted Wolves off the back of losing 1-0 to champions Manchester City last time out, which brought to an end their four-match winning run in the league. Yet the North Londoners got back on track at Molineux on Saturday as goals from Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, and Harry Kane inspired the visitors to a 3-2 win in the West Midlands, although they did have to withstand a second half comeback from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to move above Arsenal into the Premier League’s top four.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Spurs fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been taking to Twitter to laugh off rumours linking Victor Wanyama with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

And while the reports suggest that the Kenya international could be a replacement for Paul Pogba, which itself is laughable given they are different types of central midfielders, the overall links with Jose Mourinho’s side aren’t as ridiculous as they might seem.

Yes, there is little doubt that the wording in the piece, in that the Red Devils are reportedly looking at Wanyama as a possible replacement for France World Cup winner Pogba, is indeed ludicrous – they aren’t the same type of midfielder.

However, everything else surrounding the story, namely that Wanyama is struggling for fitness and form at Tottenham and has been on the peripheries for some time now, alongside United’s likely need for greater midfield strength, suggests that it’s a move which isn’t totally out of the question.

The Kenyan star was a revelation at Spurs in his first season at the club back in 2016/17 following his arrival from Southampton, with the 27-year-old striking up a sensational partnership with Mousa Dembele to help inspire Pochettino’s men to second place in the Premier League table behind Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Since then though, Wanyama has seriously struggled with injuries in making just 18 Premier League appearances for Tottenham last time round, while he has had some niggling problems this term as well to further restrict his game time, appearing just six times in all competitions.

As such, a move away from Spurs could be what he needs to get his career going once again, and Old Trafford could be the ideal destination given their seeming need for greater strength in that midfield area.

Nemanja Matic hasn’t enjoyed the best of starts to the new season to suggest that he could be past his best, while summer signing Fred has hardly pulled up any trees following his move from Shakhtar Donetsk – thus, further depth could be required.

So while Spurs fans are right to laugh at the suggestion that Wanyama would be the ideal replacement for Pogba at Old Trafford, everything else surrounding the story, namely the Kenyan’s situation at Tottenham and United’s need to bolster the midfield, suggests that the links aren’t quite as ridiculous as they seem.

The Strike: Kieran Trippier’s struggles are real after World Cup wonder goal

[ad_pod ]

For England fans across the country, the summer of 2018 was one filled with anticipation, joy and heartbreak, and all three emotions peaked during the semi-final with Croatia.

For one man in particular, that night will live long in the memory. Five minutes into the game, with bums barely on seats back home, Kieran Trippier stepped up to take a free-kick from 25 yards out. The Tottenham man duly swept his country into the lead in their first World Cup semi-final since Italia 90, with the whole nation launching their pints into the air in unison.

The now 28-year-old’s strike could hardly have been better placed and had the pace to fly past the Croatian wall, giving Danijel Subasic in goal no chance. As it hit the back of the net it felt like football truly was coming home.

Unfortunately for the Three Lions, it wasn’t to be in the Luzhniki Stadium that night as Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic ensured that Croatia progressed through to the final, where they were eventually thumped by France.

The sense of pride was still palpable across the nation for the next few weeks, but since being back at Spurs things have come crashing down to earth for the man christened as the ‘Bury Beckham’ during the summer.

This week, the former Barnsley and Burnley man has had to pull out of the England squad with a groin injury, meaning there will be no repeat of his World Cup heroics when Gareth Southgate’s side take on Croatia in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

This injury comes as little surprise after the amount of football Trippier played in the summer before coming almost immediately back into the Tottenham side, and a number of Spurs players have suffered similar setbacks after reaching the final weekend of the tournament in Russia.

However, it isn’t just physically that Trippier is struggling with the after-effects of the summer. Having starred in Southgate’s wing-back role, the former Manchester City trainee has clearly found it difficult to adapt to playing in a back four under Mauricio Pochettino again.

For England, Trippier was given license to bomb forward and he could rely on former Spurs man Kyle Walker behind him to sweep anything up.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”327140″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Leicester Trump Man City Chelsea & Liverpool”]

In the Premier League this season though Trippier has made a couple of notable errors that we haven’t seen from him before. For example, just recently against Manchester City his missed header allowed Raheem Sterling to race in behind the Spurs defence and pull the ball back for Riyad Mahrez to score at Wembley.

Then, in the away win at Wolves, Trippier attempted a Cruyff turn on the corner of his own box, a poor idea at the best of times. When the England hero lost the ball it put youngster Juan Foyth under pressure and the Premier League debutant gave away a penalty.

Whether this is thanks to a change of mindset after the World Cup or simply a lack of time off, once he is back from injury Trippier will have to get his head down if he is to convince Pochettino and Southgate that he is worthy of keeping the first choice right-back slot for both club and country.
